Which of the following describes why you would want a 3d home theater system?A) You want to be able to sneak friends over in the trunk of your car for movie night.

B) You’re thinking of re-locating your home theater to your backyard, foregoing your lumpy sofa for the coziness of a picnic blanket.

C) You think every movie will be a double feature.

d) You want more than HD. You want to be immersed in exceptionally vivid and life like entertainment, right in your living room.

When it comes to 3D movies, a lot has changed since the days of drive-in theaters and funny blue-and-red glasses. In fact, almost everything has changed.

Thanks to recent advances in video-reproduction technology, you can now experience 3D viewing right at home. But this is no ordinary 3D: There are no lines, no noisy strangers, no weather, and no glasses (oh, wait, you still need those). Instead, you get your own personal viewing area, peace and quiet, and of course, a theater-like experience, including a Full HD 1080p picture, exceptional color, fluid motion, and studio-quality surround sound.

Your 3d eco-system only needs five things:

1. 3D HDTV Casting aside the old red-and-blue technology of yester-year, today’s 3D HDTV’s look to alternate-frame sequencing (AFS) to achieve a 3D effect. Like all 3D technologies, AFS uses the same principles as does human sight to achieve 3D viewing. Our two eyes see a given object or scene from two slightly different angles, which our brains process into a single image with height, width, and depth . . that is, 3D! Similarly, video cameras used to film AFS 3D movies use two lenses set slightly apart to record two almost-identical versions of a movie – one for your left eye and one for your right. These two versions are shuffled together, alternating single frames from each version, and 3D HDTVs play back that footage at ultra-high speeds while special active shutter glasses ensure that each eye sees only the version of the movie intended for that eye. Finally, your brain processes the two versions into one 3D feature presentation.

Q&A

2. 3D active glasses

Working in perfect coordination with the left- and right-eye images flashing on a 3D HDTV, active shutter glasses alternately blacken-out their liquid-crystal lenses at ultra-high speeds, ensuring that each eye only sees its intended image on the TV. Plus keeping things neat and tidy, 3D active shutter glasses communicate wirelessly with transmitters built into most 3D HDTVs.

3. 3D Blu-ray Disc playerStandard Blu-ray Disc players are not capable of transmitting the complicated, ultra-high speed HD video footage required to reproduce a 3D image using AFS technology. Accordingly, a new generation of 3D Blu-ray players has been created to allow for seamless transfer from your favorite 3D Blu-ray movie to your 3D HDTV.

4. 3D content Movie studios, television producers, and game developers are all embracing the 3D revolution. Whether it’s a Hollywood blockbuster, ESPN

sports, or the latest video game, you’ll find 3D entertainment everywhere you turn.

5. 3D receiver Finally, if you’re planning on connecting your entire 3D home theater system using a receiver, be sure to look for new 3D-capable models. Sporting HDMI 1.4a connectivity, these new A/V hubs meet the signal demands of 3D content.

What about 2D viewing on a 3D HDTV? New 3D HDTVs are still fully compatible with standard-definition and non-3D HD viewing, so you can still watch all your favorite DVDs and 2D Blu-ray movies. Plus, with the faster processing needed for 3D your 2D view has never been better.

What about my HDMI cables? In order to handle the increased data requirements of 3D home entertainment, a new version of HDMI has been created . . . HDMI 1.4a For optimal 3D system performance, you’ll need to hook up your 3D HDTV and 3D Blu-ray player using an HDMI 1.4a cable.
