Transcript of VANISH PPTPresentation Nov 2014
• Previous industry standard for no-label look on glass and other clear, rigid containers
– Clear PP film over 1.5 mils thick
• Now, that is about to change
• VANISH™ products redefine what can be achieved in labeling applications
• Feature clear 0.92 mil face and liner
• Potential for new shapes & imagery
• Opportunity for productivity gains & reduction in packaging materials
• Less roll changes = less waste
New industry standard for no-label look

• Window approach– Graphics in a square, circular or irregular pattern with a clear window
section
• Irregular shapes– Graphics can now really fit brand owner needs
– With VANISH™, you don’t see the clear, square halo of thicker gauge films or square cut corners of a paper label
• Opacity– Important graphics (like logos) should stand out
– Utilize a layer of white behind areas where the background should not show through
• Transparency– Use metallic background for a transparent ink to provide interesting
addition to base color
– High impact shelf appeal without the use of metallic accent inks or cold foil/hot stamping
New opportunities for designers
• Metallics– Leave areas of label clear so silver can show through (aluminum cans)
– Add transparent yellow to turn silver into gold
– Excellent capabilities when used for accenting in heavy opaque color areas
• Metallic accentuation on cans
• Contrast/bold statements– Utilize VANISH™ on clear products & clear packaging
• Such as glass or clear plastics
– Feature branding or simple statements for dramatic impact with opaque lettering or graphics in midst of clear package
– Emphasizes purity of taste or premium appearance• Water bottles• Vodka labels
New opportunities for designers
Productivity gains
• Number of labels per roll– 16” OD– 3” core– Assuming label + matrix = 4” wide

• Substrates– Glass
– Aluminum cans
– PET rigid containers
• Benefits– No-label look
– Productivity gains
– Sustainability
– Alternative to screen printing• More cost-effective• Faster design changes• Use bottles for different brands and designs• Less working capital – less bottles stocked
– Water resistance• Passes 48-hour ice bucket test

VANISH™ for beverage & spirits
• Beer– Label completely disappears on glass at arm’s length– Lower investment costs in space and minimums of pre-printed
bottles and cans– Additional graphics capabilities
• Opacity levels • Raised texture• Scents• Glow in the dark/UV fluorescence• Thermochromatic
– Capability to create separate batches, seasonalor event brewing
• Water – PET no-label look
• Energy drinks– Graphics on cans– Lower cost to entry, expanding skus for flavors
• Spirits– Same benefits as glass packaging for beer

Re-order when needed, keep inventories lower and cash focused to marketing / distribution
Increased flexibility to produce more seasonal or small batch premiums
Fill cans at 20-30 cans per minute, label at 60-70 cans per minute. Labeling does not cause any reduction in canning process.

VANISH™ end-of-life impactGoal/situation
• End-of-life impact in recycling must be recognized in the marketing/ promotion of VANISH™
• This is a new trend – Labeling cans has been done in small volumes with shrink sleeve – But now PSA is a growing decorating method
• Recycling process is well-detailed and open for documentation
• Uses an extremely high temperature de-lacquering process to remove polymer based inks
• Anticipation that this de-lacquering process would sufficiently remove Vanish labels and adhesive (550°C typical heats vs. 300°C combustion temperature for VANISH™ PET)
• PSA labeled cans is still a very small impact – in the USA:– Currently, 105,800 aluminum cans are recycled every minute – Nearly 75% of all aluminum ever produced is still in use today thanks to recycling

4. De-Lacquering (Thermal at @
550deg C)
5. Product melted at 750° C. Dross and
contaminant removed and re-use
1. Can manufacturing to
“Blanks”
VANISH™ end-of-life impactStage 1 – Can manufacturing to blanks
• “Blanks” – unprinted cans – sourced at regular minimums – (i.e. approximately 95,000 per min order)
• Order what you need for production not what you have to in order to fulfill preprinting minimums
• Efficient shipping and maximization of pallets and trucks
VANISH™ end-of-life impactStage 2 – Cans filled & labeled with VANISH™
• “Blanks” – run through filling process then labeled with PSA VANISH™ – With flexibility of utilizing PSA labels, you can now run multiple products out
of one can order
• Reductions in warehousing space for pre-printed cans
• Improved cash flow – not holding cans in inventory
• Efficient shipping and maximization of pallets and trucks
• Increased revenue by increased new product and premium product launch flexibility
VANISH™ end-of-life impactStage 3 – Municipal recycling
• Aluminum sorted/divided from other municipal waste
• Shredded and cubed for efficient shipping and reduction of aluminum oxidation
• *Aluminum cans are the most valuable product in the recycling bin due to their highly efficient recyclability
VANISH™ end-of-life impactStage 4 – De-lacquering
• Aluminum is exposed to @ 550°C to remove organic contaminants as well as polymer based inks
• Final product in combustion of PET is normally CO2 and water (not the same as PVC that results in chlorine compound)
VANISH™ end-of-life impactStage 5 – Re-melting
• Re-melted at 750°C (1382°F)
• PET melting point typically 260°C
• Stage where “Dross” (contaminant or less pure aluminum) is removed and reused for steel production or other applications where purity is not as critical
• Liquid aluminum now cast into ingots for further production to cans, rods, automotive parts etc.
