Vancouver Opera’s Yulanda M. Faris Young Artists Program engages, enriches, mentors and trains rising young Canadian opera artists and offers a bridge between formal academic educational programs and the professional world in a supportive and encouraging environment. VO’s 2019–2020 Young Artists Program will provide up to six artists — singers, pianists and stage directors — with the opportunity to train with industry leaders through master classes, one-on-one coachings and performance opportunities as part of a residency program. Singers will receive regular coachings with Vancouver Opera’s resident music staff as well as training in diction, movement, acting, stage combat and a variety of other areas in this comprehensive, performance-oriented program. Pianists, under the guidance of the Vancouver Opera music staff, will work with Young Artists Program singers in regular coachings and may also act as rehearsal pianists for mainstage productions. Stage Directors will work with Young Artists Program singers in dramatic coachings and participate in mainstage productions, working closely with production stage directors and Vancouver Opera production staff. APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

SINGERS must have solid vocal training in opera and give evidence of a high level of artistic aptitude. Knowledge of operatic language is an advantage.

PIANISTS must have a strong knowledge of various operatic styles and languages, as well as operatic coaching experience.

STAGE DIRECTORS should have some knowledge of opera and stage directing or assistant stage directing experience. Formal training at a university, college or drama school is an asset. Ability to read music, and proficiency in several operatic languages, is required.

Most applicants are between the ages of 24 and 34 and have recently completed their academic training.

All applications will be screened by Vancouver Opera’s audition committee and are considered confidential. Vancouver Opera reserves the right to decline auditioning singers and pianists who do not meet the above criteria. It is not the policy of Vancouver Opera to give post-audition feedback.

For those singers who audition, Vancouver Opera will provide an accompanist at no charge to the applicant. The applicant may choose to provide their own accompanist at their own expense.

Singers and stage directors accepted as Young Artists with Vancouver Opera receive remuneration as contracted members of the Canadian Actors’ Equity Association. All artists agree to reside in Vancouver at their own expense for the duration of the program.

The Yulanda M. Faris Young Artists Program is an opera training program for Canadian opera singers, opera coaches and stage directors. Up to six artists participate in the program at any one time.

HOW TO APPLY

Email an ELECTRONIC COPY of all the listed items below, no later than 5pm on

Monday November 12, 2018:

1. Application form, completed and signed.

2. Proof of Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Resident Status. A clean, legible photocopy of a birth certificate, passport or other legal documentation must accompany the application.

3. One copy of a concise, current résumé which includes the following information: academic background, recent operatic experience (year, role and company), operatic repertoire studied (excerpts and complete works), theatrical experience, awards and scholarships, language sung and/or spoken, and photo.

4. Two letters of recommendation from qualified references in the operatic field: voice teachers, vocal coaches, professors, conductors, opera stage directors, general directors or other artistic administrators. Letters should arrive directly from the reference authority via email to [email protected].

MUSIC DIRECTOR EMERITUSJONATHAN DARLINGTONWith recent and upcoming engagements taking him to the Wiener Staatsoper, the Paris Opera, Staatskapelle Dresden, Oper Frankfurt and Opera Australia, to name but a few, Maestro Jonathan Darlington is a highly esteemed and sought-after international conductor. He has been Music Director of Vancouver Opera since 2002 and will lead VO’s upcoming productions of Faust, a part of the Vancouver Opera’s 2019 Festival line-up.

PROGRAM DIRECTOR | LESLIE DALAMaestro Leslie Dala is Associate Conductor and Chorus Director at Vancouver Opera and Music Director of the Vancouver Bach Choir and the Music Director Emeritus of the Vancouver Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra. He recently conducted The Overcoat – a musical tailoring, aco-production with Vancouver Opera, Tapestry Opera and Canadian Stage Theatre. He will lead VO’s upcoming production of La Cenerentola, part of the 2019 VO Festival.

PRINCIPAL COACH | KINZA TYRRELLDr. Kinza Tyrrell is Principal Répétiteur, Assistant Conductor, and Assistant Chorus Director at Vancouver Opera, and Lyric Diction, Collaborative Piano Professor at the University of Victoria, and guest faculty at the Canadian Opera Company, Opera Kelowna, and Opera NUOVA, among many others. She recently conducted VO’s 2015 production of Dark Sisters. Dr. Tyrrell’s coaching and performing portfolio make her one of Canada’s leading vocal coaches.
