Although they are deeply related to our mostprimal fears and concerns, mythical monsters andfigures such as vampires also find new meaningand resonance through each era – hence theirconstantly renewed appeal and popularity.
For instance, the reinvention of the vampire mythin the late XIXth century was not without politicalovertones. Indeed, the aristocratic Count Dracula,alone in his castle, feeding on his peasantry, wasreminiscent of the parasitic Ancien regime. Thena century later, the Twilight series used vampiresas a way to talk about the ever increasingteenage angst plaguing western societies.
NOW, AS DIGITAL IS DEEPLY CHANGING OUR LIVES, ITSEEMS VAMPIRES CAN BOAST YET A NEW MEANING –BEING A PROPER METAPHOR FOR SEVERAL CURRENTTRENDS, BE THEY COMPLETELY NEW ONES OR OLDONES REVAMPED THROUGH NEW TECHNOLOGY.
