SAFE DIWALIa Choice 4 2dayWith Diwali round the corner what are we doing to

keep our environment ready for the festival of lights,

sound and smoke? Is Diwali all about fire crackers and

loud noises or does it mean more to you than all the pom-

pous, loud and overly priced celebrations people have

these days?

Diwali is a celebration of Lord Ram and Devi Sita

returning from their fourteen year vanvas, then why do

we not approach this festival in a rather holy manner? Our

environment is in a very critical condition and all we end up doing is harming it even more by polluting it in

different ways. Diwali is a festival of lights so why not just light up your house with diyas and celebrate a safe

and quite Diwali?

In October, we celebrated the Joy of Giving Week

from the 2nd

8th

of Oct, so on the lines of this festival of phi-lanthropy why dont we give something back to Mother Earth

for being so gracious to us?

We can celebrate our festivals in a more peaceful and

pollution free manner. We can start by not bursting loud sulti

bombs as the scare not only the elderly of our society but also

gentle and harmless animals that protect us. You could always

use smokeless environmentally friendly crackers made out of

recycled paper. These crackers produce bright colors and little

smoke when they burst, sure they are more expensive than the conventional ones but when you are spending,why not spend on something thats eco-friendly if you really want to burst crackers?

If you are in a more giving mood then you could

always save up the money you would use for crackers and

donate it some NGO so that they can use it for the right

reasons. Do something good this Diwali and spread the love,

joy and happiness of the return of Lord Ram by giving and not

causing harm to our environment by polluting it with loud

noise and smoke and harmful chemicals emitting from the fire

(AVEC)organizeda seminar forvalueeducation coordinators/ teachers

of all theABE schools inMumbaion the26thof September2013.This

yeartherewere210participantsfrom104schools.

Thisseminar

conceptualized

by

Fr.

Glenford

Lowe

sdb

aims

at

familiar

izing the value education coordinatorsof the various schoolswith the

activitiesofAVECaswellashelpsthemexchange ideasandgettoknow

oneother. Ithelps the teachersworkhand inhandwithAVEC towards thecommongoalof instillingvalues in the

heartsandmindsoftheyoungchildren entrustedtotheircare.

TheprogrambeganwithaprayerservicebySr.VeraAlmeidaoftheAVEC

team.Fr.BoscoDMello,theprincipalofDonBoscoHighSchool,Matunga

thenwelcomedallpresent.The seminarwas inauguratedbyFr.George

Athaide,thesecretaryoftheArchdiocesanBoardofEducation.KiaScherr

spokeaboutherPeaceForumand theOneLifeAllianceofwhichshe is

thefounder.

She

also

released

aDVD

containing

the

30

day

pledge

for

respectingthesacrednessoflife.OneoftheteacherscommentedThe30

DayPledgewasveryexcitingandinspiring thehighlightoftheday.

AVECawardswerepresentedtothewinnersofthevariouscompetitionsorganized. Theparticipantswereenthused

bythetalkofFr.AjoyFernandeswhotookthemthroughthevalueofunderstandingIntellectualDisability,which is

often overlooked. The sessionwas lively and interactivewith videos to help the teachers be attentive to special

children.

Fr. Joaquim Fernandes spoke about the effects of media and

networkingupontheacademicandsocialdevelopmentofstudents.

A representative from Macmillan Publishers, Ms. Avinash Kaur

Dhanoa introducedthosepresenttotheirXpressseries integrated

teachinglearning resources. Macmillan also distributed copies of

theirbookMorethanaTeacherwhichspeaksaboutthedynamics

of teaching. It attempts to shed light on some of the constraints

teachers face and

offerspossiblesolutionstocommonproblems.

Fr.GlennLoweconcludedtheseminarbypresentingtheAVECteam.He

alsoinvitedtheValueeducationCoordinatorstotakeuptheirresponsi

bilities

and

ensure

that

Value

Education

is

given

its

due

value

in

all

our

schools. Itwas sad to know that28 schools failed to turnup for the
