Dear Parents and Carers, I look forward to welcoming Year 8 parents to the forthcoming Pathway Evening on Wednesday 13 February and Parents’Evening on Wednesday 20 February. Thank you to everyone who attended theYear 13 Parents’ Evening last night, we hope the evening was helpful in preparing for the important forthcoming examinations. Performances of the school show, Oliver, are next week. Students and the Back Stage Crew have been hard at work rehearsing. Everyone is welcome, tickets are available from main Reception. Visit to Taizé, July 2019 Last week, Dan Finn, from the Archbishop of York’s Youth Trust, came to speak to students in Year 10, 12 and 13 about an exciting opportunity they can be a part of (Year 11 have not yet had the introductory assembly, but are also invited too). Archbishop Sentamu is leading a group of young people from the Yorkshire region to visit Taizé in Eastern France (Burgundy) and students from Archbishop Holgate’s School have been invited to accompany him and the group. Many of you will know that a small cohort from Archbishop Holgate’s have joined him over the last few years. His first visit was one coachload, two years ago it was three and last summer he took four coaches full of young people. We shall be joining students from many UK schools and young people from all over Europe. There will be several thousand young people of different backgrounds meeting at Taizé: those who are Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, believers of other religions, and those of no faith. Each day includes a reflection in a larger group led by a brother of the Community, small international discussion groups, some practical activity, prayer with the whole community and opportunities to socialise and relax and make new friends. The cost of the visit is very small, just £110 for a week in France. This is because the largest part of the visit costs are paid for by a charitable bequest. Students will need a little pocket money for any personal purchases. We will depart on Saturday 13 July and return on Monday 22 July, the last week of term. A valid UK passport and a European Health Insurance Card will be required. Since there are a limited number of places, any student who wishes to go on the visit will need to write a brief letter of application stating the reasons why they wish to participate, what skills and attributes they will bring to the group and what they think they will learn from the experience. The letter needs to be returned on or before Monday 4 February. For further information, students and parents are to contact Mr Nihill before this time. Those who are successful in their application for a place will be informed shortly afterwards and will then complete the necessary paperwork and make two £55 payments via Wisepay. Please encourage your child to attend a session each week to support their learning. The sessions will run from 3.10-4.00pm in the rooms set out above. Some parents may also receive a text message about P6 which will ask for your support to encourage students to attend on a weekly basis.

Science - Year 11 Period 6 Science P6 is now on a Wednesday evening. The table below shows the schedule. It is vital that as many students as possible attend so that they can be supported in the weeks leading up to exams. We look forward to welcoming the students and helping them progress in the subject.

E-Safety InformationWhat should I do if my child has posted inappropriate material online? Conversations to have :It may be upsetting to find out that your child has shared inappropriate material online. However, it is best to remain calm and find out why the image was shared and with whom. It may be quite difficult for them to talk about so try not to shout or make them feel like it’s their fault. If they can’t talk to you, direct them to trusted support like Childline to talk to trained councillors.Things you can do :• It is important to find out who they have sent the images to and where they have been shared. If they have been sent to another child, get in touch with school so they can help stop it being spread further.• If it has been uploaded to social media, you can report this to the network. For help, get in touch with the O2 NSPCC Online Safety Helpline for free: 08088005002. • It is important that you remind your child it is a criminal offence to post inappropriate or indecent material and images on social media.

Social Media SpotlightEach week, we will be providing an overview of different social media platforms which students may be using in their own time. We hope to provide an insight into what these Apps are, the benefits of using them and the potential dangers that may come from using them.

Instagram(information sourced from www.internetmatters.org)What is Instagram? It’s a social media App focusing on the use of images or videos with over 300 million active monthly users to date. For keen ‘instagramers’ the App provides a channel to share their photography skills and daily life events. Content posted can be amplified through the use of hashtags meaning masses can be reached in a matter of minutes. What privacy issues should I be aware of? • Private Profile: this ensures only followers that your child knows and approves personally can see their posts.• Public Profile: all posts and activity can be seen by everyone who uses the App and web version of Instagram. By default all profiles are Public, a Private Profile can be activated by selecting the gear icon in the top right of the profile view followed by Private Profile.Posting and sharing contentThere are 3 options to consider when posting content and who with:• Public: the most relaxed profile setting. All photos and videos are searchable and can be viewed and commented on by all users.• Private: videos and photos are only seen by ‘approved followers’. All followers must be approved by your child.• Direct: Instagram has an option to send content directly to up to 15 people. Messages are deleted after 2 weeks if they remain ignored.Unfollow a user• If your child no longer wants to see a particular user’s content or doesn’t like what they see, simply unfollow that person. This can be executed directly from their profile page.Block a user and/or report their content as inappropriate• A user can be blocked or their content reported as inappropriate by tapping the ellipsis in top right-hand corner of their profile. Select ‘Block User’ and/or ‘Report Inappropriate Content’.https://www.internetmatters.org/hub/guidance/instagram-safety-a-how-to-guide-for-parentsIf you have any concerns about your child’s safety on social media, please contact either Mr Williams (Assistant Head: Pastoral Care) or Gaynor Stainsby (Safeguarding officer).

The Brilliant Club Scholars ProgrammeWell done to our ‘brilliant’ Year 9/10 students who kicked off this very prestigious opportunity at the University of Sheffield last Friday. During the day they took part in a research skills seminar, attended a lecture and enjoyed a tour of the highly regarded and very selective university. It was the perfect way to start this excellent course. Students will now be attending one seminar with a PhD tutor every week until the end of March. From here they will be writing 2000 words on the adventures of Marco Polo (a great explorer of the 13th Century). We look forward to the students returning to the University of Sheffield where they will celebrate their success at a Graduation Ceremony! The students we should all be cheering along are: Abigail Emerson, Qais Kurd, Sydney Donockley, Jack Stephenson, Ben Reading, Hannah O’Connor, Jessica Turton, Oliver Pugh, Finlay Tait, Lucy Weld, Devnara Wijeraine, Hannah Townson.

School Show - Oliver!Tickets are now ON SALE! Performances are on Wednesday 6 (7.00pm), Thursday 7 (4.30pm) and Friday 8 February (7.00pm). Tickets are available from Main Reception - £4 Adults and £2.50 child/students. Family tickets (2 adults and 2 children) are £12. Come along and support the school.

#TheWorldIsInOurHands - Tip of the WeekUse rechargeable batteries - an obvious tip here, but switching could save you money and reduce waste. Make sure that you take your used batteries to a disposal/recycling drop box when finished with them.

OF THE WEEK

Theist: A person who believes in the existence of a god or gods, specifically of a creator who intervenes in the universe. “The Archbishop of York would describe himself as a theist.”

@AHSDofE: Time to practice packing those rucksacks

Basketball The Year 7 Basketball team were in competition against Bootham, Fulford and Sherburn again this week. Although they didn’t manage to win their games they managed a draw against Bootham and have shown great improvement in the space of just a week. Well done boys and keep up the good work! Player of the match went to Joseph Hall for a tireless performance.

NetballYear 7's had their weekly fixture against Jo Ro this week. Both games were thrilling from beginning to end. We were able to come home with a win (9-6) for one team and narrowly beaten in the last seconds in the second game (5-6). All the students were superb. Well done ladies.

Indoor Athletics Club (Y7 & Y8)We have a new Indoor Athletics Club for Y7 & Y8’s on Tuesdays at lunchtime in the Sports Hall. Students only need to bring their trainers (or PE kit if they wish), it is recommended that they bring a packed lunch so they don’t miss out on their lunch.

Polite Reminder As we start the New Year, we would like to remind parents to ensure that all PE kit is clearly labelled with students’ names. We have had several students with lost, unnamed kit. Any kit that is found and is labelled is sent to reception and returned to students.Thank you.

RugbyHeworth ARLC Juniors player and AHS PE student, Callum Rutland, has signed a scholarship contract that links to Super Leagues’ City of Hull Academy - the merger of Hull Kingston Rovers and Hull FC youth set-ups. Congratulations Callum.
