After the initial meeting toestablish the senior’s needs andpreferences, Mark or Michellewill narrow down the choicesavailable and personally tour andevaluate the facilities. Upondetermining the best optionsavailable, they will personallydrive the senior and family to

comfortable as possible. “This isa difficult and confusing time forfamilies, and our goal is to makethis change easier and less stress-ful for everyone involved, withpersonalized, compassionate,selfless service,” says Michelle.

John Burgess of Tulsa under-went knee replacement surgerywith Dr. Ronald LaButti in 2011after over two decades of kneeproblems.

“I was very active in highschool sports,” Burgess says. “Igraduated from high school in

1980s.”Since then, Burgess has

undergone two arthroscopic surgeries on each knee. “Itseemed like every five years orso, I’d have to have one or theother operated on. I finally quitplaying sports around 1995

1967 and went into the military,where there was a lot of intensetraining, and I stayed active inintramural sports. I didn’t haveany knee problems then. Aftermy military years, I played a lotof sports until I began to developknee problems in the late

informed he would probably notbe able to have another arthro-scopic surgery on his right knee,and would most likely have tohave it replaced. “My knee painwas getting so severe that walk-ing was becoming very difficult,and running was completely outof the question. I had tried allthe over-the-counter medicationsI could find, but things continu-ally worsened.”

In 2011, Burgess went to seeDr. LaButti. “My supervisor hadjust undergone hip replacementsurgery, and he was very pleasedwith his results. He recommend-ed Dr. LaButti to me.”

Dr. LaButti recommendedknee replacement, and Burgesshad the surgery done on hisright knee. “By then, I was inconstant pain. Walking was verydifficult, and I had developed asevere limp. Sleeping hadbecome an on-again, off-againexperience every day. I was tothe point where I would eitherhave to have the surgery or retire– and I’m too young to retire.”

Burgess’s surgery went well,he says. “The nurses and thera-pists at the hospital had me upand walking with a walker theday of the surgery. After a cou-ple days in the hospital, I wasreleased, and then I had hometherapy for a week. Aside fromthe swelling in my knee, I neverreally experienced any pain fromthe surgery.”

Burgess was on the walkerfor two weeks, then a cane fortwo more. “After four weeks, I

was walking without the cane,”Burgess says. “After five, I wasdriving my car and riding mymotorcycle. After six, I was danc-ing.” After seven, Dr. LaButtireleased him to work withoutrestriction. “At week seven,when I began outpatient rehabili-tation, I was told that I wouldneed at least 115 degrees ofmovement before I could stop.On my first day, I had 130.”And, Burgess says, he is now freeof limitations.

But, he adds, he wishes hehadn’t waited. “I waited becauseI didn’t want to go through itmore than once and I had beentold that the replacement kneewould only last 10 or 15 years.But I wish I hadn’t, because thesurgery was no problem. Oncethe swelling went down, I wasable to get back to normal; every-thing else was just walking andexercise. I’ve had no problemswith the new knee, and wouldreadily recommend knee replace-ment by Dr. LaButti to anyoneneeding the procedure.”
