The author was listed as unknown, but the message resonated with me, and I thought I might share it with you. An elderly carpenter was ready to retire. He told his employer of his plans to leave the house-building business and live a more leisurely life with his wife, enjoying his extended family. He would miss the paycheck, but he wanted to retire. They could get by. The builder, his employer, was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one more house as a personal favor. The carpenter said yes, but in time it was easy to see that his heart was not in his work. He resorted to shoddy workmanship and used inferior materials. It was an unfortunate way to end his career. When the carpenter finished his work and the builder came to inspect the house, he handed the front-door key to the carpenter. This is your house,he said, my gift to you. What a shock! What a shame! If he had only known he was building his own house, he would have done it all so differently. Now he had to live in the home he had built none too well. So it is with us. We build our lives in a distracted way, reacting rather than acting, willing to put up less than our best. At important points we do not give the job our best effort. Then with a shock we look at the situation we have created and find that we are now living in the house we have built. If we had only realized, we would have done it a better job. Think of yourself as the carpenter. Think about your house. Each day you hammer a nail, place a board, or erect a wall. Build wisely. It is the only life you will ever build. Even if you live it for only one day more, that day deserves to be lived graciously and with dignity. The plaque on the wall says, Life is a do-it-yourself project.Who could say it more clearly? Your life today is the result of your attitudes and choices in the past. Your life tomorrow will be the result of your attitudes and the choices you make today. And so my hope is that each of us will build the best house we can in 2018 and that this new year will turn out to be great for you and your family. MERIT

Venerable Master’s Message Chris Chrzanowski, KCCH, Venerable Master of the Alexandria Lodge of Perfection

Dear Brethren:

I would like to congratulate Allen Beckner, KCCH, for a very successful year and thank all of you for electing me the Venerable Master of the Lodge of Perfection for 2018. I am honored to serve with such a distinguished cadre of officers this year.

In addition to our monthly meetings, one of the first events in 2018 that you will want to put on your calendar is the Scottish Rite Workshop in March at the Richmond Scottish Rite. We accomplish a lot in that half day. We can expect to receive updates on the speech and language centers, have interesting speakers, hear from both our Grand Master and Sovereign Grand Inspector General, and of course, enjoy great fellowship with Scottish Rite Masons from all over Virginia, and have some of the best fried chicken in the Commonwealth. Let’s give Allen something more to brag about as a Conference Vice President and have the largest delegation there that morning.

An event not to be missed is our Friends and Family Dinner and Charity Event which is held at the Fairview Marriott on the second Sunday in April. As you will read in this issue of the Bulletin, this event benefits our Rite Care Program at James Madison University (JMU) and the House of the Temple restoration. You know how hard Tim Shrum and his Committee work to make this happen; we all need to help him by buying a ticket and attending this event.

In July, we have our annual Valley visit to JMU for the Rite Care Clinic, where we get to see the results of our fundraising efforts to aid those with speech and language disorders. We meet with some of the clinicians and students and observe children as they participate in the David Kruger Scottish Rite Summer Speech-Language Program.

The Valley of Danville is hosting the Scottish Rite Conference this September at Smith Mountain Lake. If you have never been to a conference before, this will be the one to go to. Danville is planning an evening cruise for Thursday night and in place of our Friday night formal banquet, they’re having a BBQ cookout.

Beyond all of this, we have our special dinner meetings. In January, there is the Installation and Awards Dinner. In March, we hold our Ceremony of Remembrance & Renewal. Our annual Ladies dinner is in May, our Outstanding Teacher Recognition takes place in June, and the Feast of Tishri in September. In addition, the Alexandria Valley will be hosting the Division Leadership Conference on Saturday, March 19, the Celebrate the Craft web event on May 19, and the Grand Lodge of Virginia’s one-day conferral on Saturday, August 4.

There is a lot more to look forward to – we are going to be busy and we are going to have fun!

See you in Lodge, Chris

Ladies Sip and Paint Event February 10 and Friends and Family Charity Dinner April 8 Tim Shrum, KCCH Chairman, Alexandria Scottish Rite Friends and Family Charity Dinner Committee

Greetings Brethren:

Here are two dates you should put on your calendar. Ask your ladies to come to the Sip and Paint Event on Saturday, February 10, and you, your lady, and friends please come to the Friends and Family Charity Dinner Sunday, April 8. It is so easy to put off getting your tickets or inviting your friends, but now would be a great time to do both.

SIP and PAINT—Saturday, February 10

As part of our preparation for the event, my wife Karen will be hosting a SIP and Paint for the Ladies on February 10 at Pinot’s Palette in the Tysons Corner area. It is at 2750 Gallows Road, Suite I, Vienna VA 22182 (located in Halstead Square between Gallows Road and Merrilee Drive.) There is free parking and it is metro accessible.

This will be a fun opportunity for our ladies to unwind, enjoy each other’s company, and express their creativity. We even anticipate being able to showcase some of their artwork at the Alexandria Scottish Rite Friends and Family Charity Dinner silent auction. The ladies should arrive at 1:45 p.m., and the event will begin promptly at 2 p.m. The cost is $45 which includes wine and light refreshments. Everyone in the class paints and personalizes their own painting with the help of an artists’ step-by-step instructions.

We would like your reservations by January 15. Please RSVP directly to Karen Shrum at [email protected] or call at 703-801-1387.

Here is what is planned for the dinner and auction—Sunday, April 8

There will be background music performed by a highly skilled, world-class cellist during the social hour and our silent auction.

Our libation tasting this year will feature tasting items for the ladies as well as for the Brethren. We will have a wonderful dinner in a great venue.

We will have a great many auction items perfect for you to take home and cherish and many you will want to give as gifts. You can browse auction items on our website at www.alexandriascottishritecharityevent.org. These include: You can browse auction items on our website at www.alexandriascottishritecharityevent.org. These include:

A day at the range with a retired Navy seal A painting of Brother George Washington laying a cornerstone and wearing Masonic regalia.

We are planning a speaker and perhaps video to remind us why we have this charity dinner and

how our contributions are having such an impact on the lives of the children we help.

Here is how you can help:

Save the date April 8, 2018 – 3:30 to 7:30 P.M., Fairview Park Marriott, Falls Church, VA.

Register as early as you can for the dinner. This helps significantly to ensure the accuracy of our dinner count, arranging the seating and providing the cash flow to pay the hotel. It also means you get it done now and don’t forget until the last minute. You can register for the dinner on our website at www.alexandriascottishritecharityevent.org or you can contact me at [email protected] for a registration form.

Sponsor a Table for Eight. A table costs $680 and includes eight dinners, with $320 of that amount being tax deductible. Consider being a sponsor yourself and inviting six friends to join you and your lady. Also get your Lodge to sponsor one or more tables. We would like to get 30 sponsorships this year – and if 15 individuals and 15 Lodges step forward we can get there!

Become an event sponsor. In addition to, or instead of, being a table sponsor, you or a friend of yours, or a business associate might want to contribute to helping children with language disorders by becoming an event sponsor. All event sponsorships are 100% deductible because all the money goes to charity! Although an event sponsorship does not include a dinner, here is what it does include:

O Platinum Level - $1000.00 Your Business Name or individual name on a Banner hung at the dinner. Your Business Name or individual name Listed in the Program. Your Business Name or individual name Listed on our website.

O Gold Level - $500.00 Your business name and or individual name listed in the Program. Your business name or individual name listed on our website. Your business name or individual name announced at the Dinner.

O Silver Level – $250.00 Your business name or individual name listed on our website. Your business name or individual name listed in our Program.

O Bronze Level - $100.00 Your business name or individual name listed in our Program.

Donate an auction item for the auction. Here are some examples of auction items that you might consider donating:

An afternoon at a winery or a dinner at a fine restaurant A basket of fine chocolate and wine An evening at the Kennedy center and dinner Pieces of artwork or Jewelry

Why not approach a merchant you patronize and ask them to donate a service or an item for our RiteCare charity. It is good publicity for their business and a tax deduction. In addition, you can donate items you no longer have room for. (Not sure if an item is appropriate for the auction? Ask yourself: would I bid on that item?) (Continued on Page 6.)

Alexandria Scottish Rite 2016 Spring Reunion Class

Let me conclude by again thanking each of you for your past support. As a result, our Friends and Family Dinner, for the second year in a row, was featured in the national Scottish Rite Journal. We are not resting on our laurels. Your event committee is hard at work to make our 2018 dinner even more fun – we want it to be nothing short of spectacular. Our goal this year is to have 250 people at our dinner and raise $35,000 for our charity. By reaching out to the community and inviting people to attend the dinner, you can help us meet this goal and enable us to expand our support to our Scottish Rite Language Clinics which improves the lives of so many children.

Thanks again for your support.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

Tim Shrum, KCCH

Strategic Planning: The Next Steps

Peter Terrill, KCCH, Chairman, Alexandria Valley Strategic Planning Committee

I am happy to report that our Valley strategic plan was approved by vote of the membership, and the final version of the plan is available for viewing on our Valley website. But while the creation of the plan is complete, our work to implement the actions and recommendations in the plan is now just beginning. And, in moving the plan to implementation, let me quote a well-known and respected American figure who made the following observation in 1885:

“…Congress in session is Congress on public exhibition, whilst Congress in its committee rooms is Congress at work." - Woodrow Wilson

While I don’t intend to compare the Alexandria Valley with the U.S. Congress, we must acknowledge that our method of accomplishing work is the same: through our committees. In recognition of this, our strategic plan is organized to align nearly all of the actions to our Valley committees. And so, our committees will be critical in executing the implementation of our plan.

Before the committees can move to develop action plans, we need to first realign the existing Valley standing committees to a new structure, as recommended in the plan. The new structure of the Valley’s standing committees are:

1.) Membership 2.) Budget and Finance 3.) Communications and Public Outreach 4.) Education and Training 5.) Philanthropy

To make this change, the Strategic Planning Committee is now working with the Executive Council to parse the roles and duties of the new committees and revise the committee charters. We will be working with the Committee Chairmen to coordinate the charters and also determine the size of each committee required to execute the strategic plan actions.

We expect this phase of the strategic plan implementation to take up to 60 days, at which time the revised committee charters will be incorporated into the Valley’s bylaws, which will be put to the membership for a formal vote. Following this, the Committee Chairmen will work to match able and willing Brethren to positions within the committees. Finally, the committees will develop detailed action plans in 2018 to address their action items from the strategic plan.

One take-away from all of this is that if you are interested in the mission of any of these five committees, and would like to help, let me know and we will try to get you involved in the work of that committee.

[We have often mentioned the renovation efforts at the House of the Temple. We will periodically feature articles that explain what is being done, how, and why. This article is reprinted with permission from the January/February 2015 Scottish Rite Journal. Photography credits: Elizabeth A. W. McCarthy.]

Over the last few months, the Renovation Team has been busy narrowing down and finalizing details and specifications on items related to stone cleaning and restoration in the interior of the House of the Temple.

Finishing touches: Over many years, people have applied numerous finishing products and methods to the marble floors, some marring or damaging the surfaces they were meant to preserve. Based on testing and historical research, the Renovation Team has determined the ideal treatment for the Tavernelle marble floors is a matte finish—in direct contrast to the glossy one that now covers it. Currently, the Team is in the process of testing various products to determine the best treatment that will remove the gloss and re-seal the floor safely.

Filling in the gaps: Seven different styles of marble from the U.S. and Europe were used in the construction of the House of the Temple, and each type has its own quality and level of imperfections. The Temple’s marble floor surfaces consist of two contrasting-color types—the beige Tavernelle, which constitutes a larger percentage of the floor, and the green-streaked, black Tinos marble, which borders and accents it. While substantially more common and cost-effective, Tavernelle marble, unfortunately, contains numerous, natural pits (gaps) in its surface, unlike the smoother Tinos.

To make the walking surfaces safer and also to minimize damage to them, the builders had to use stone filler to seal and level out these pits. A century since its original application, the stone putty is in various states of failure and will need to be replaced (see sidebar).

Preserving responsibly: The Renovation Team ’s ultimate goal is to restore the finishes and conditions as close as we can to what we believe John Russell Pope saw when he exited the building in 1915. Since so many various materials have been applied to the surfaces for so long, determining the right treatment method that will prevent—not exacerbate—damage has taken some concentrated effort.

The team has conducted full surveys of the existing conditions and established a “threshold of tolerance,” so the areas requiring the removal of “bad” materials, like the sealers and fillers, can be identified and cataloged. These problem spots then will be treated accordingly—stripped to bare stone, repaired as needed, and resealed accordingly. Contractors marked off several areas of floor in the south hallway outside the Atrium to test various cleaners and sealers.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Ideally, the filler used in the House of the Temple’s stone flooring should blend and look like a natural vein in the beige Tavernelle marble. The first photo shows putty that is still in good condition. Upon closer inspection, one can see the filler has even been mixed with small bits of stone, to give it a more natural appearance. The middle image shows the filler starting to lose its brown hue. In the far right image, the putty has failed entirely, turning almost completely yellow.

Avoid driving while you’re fatigued. Getting the proper amount of rest before

taking on winter weather tasks reduces driving risks.

Never warm up a vehicle in an enclosed area, such as a garage.

Make certain your tires are properly inflated.

Never mix radial tires with other tire types.

Keep your gas tank at least half full to avoid gas line freeze-up.

If possible, avoid using your parking brake in cold, rainy and snowy weather.

Do not use cruise control when driving on any slippery surface (wet, ice, sand).

Always look and steer where you want to go.

● Use your seat belt every time you get into your vehicle.
