Arizona Bicycle Laws
• http://azleg.gov/ArizonaRevisedStatutes.asp search
for “bicycle”
• Same rights and responsibilities as motor
vehicles.
• ARS 28-735 – “Three-foot law” – Motorists must
allow 3 feet clearance when passing bicyclists.
• Ride as far right as practicable. Move left to avoid
debris, pass another cyclist, make a left turn, or if the
lane is too narrow to share safely.
• Ride no more than two abreast on roadways.

-
More Arizona Bike Laws
• White front headlight visible from 500 feet & red
rear reflector visible from 300 feet required
dusk to dawn.
• Parents responsible for their kids’
behavior.
• One rider per seat.
• Must have at least one
working brake, one hand
on handlebars.
• No holding on to moving vehicles.
-
Safety First!
• Ride on the right – with
traffic.
• Be predictable – signal
turns, act like a car.
• Be visible – light, bright,
reflective.
• Be attentive – no head
phones or ear buds.
• Ride defensively! Bikes are
small and easy to miss.
-
Estimating Travel Time
“Experiment with different routes,
even if they‟re longer. If your priority
is getting there as fast as possible,
you‟ll only be frustrated. Take it
easy and enjoy the ride!” Dave T.
-
Choosing a Route
• Ideal bike route is rarely the
same as your driving route
• Practice on a weekend
• Try parks, canal banks, green
belts!
-
Choosing A Route
• Printed maps available at valleymetro.org,
materials order form for – Glendale, Mesa,
Tempe and the region
• Google Maps – click the bike icon before you click “Get directions”
-
Cyclists’ Advice: Getting Started

be much cooler than
afternoon.” Jim S.
• “Buy a coffee cup holder for
your bike!” Libby C.
• “Biking to work is a great way to clear your mind of day
to day stressors, stay active, and ignore that ever-
ringing phone.” Nick B.
• “Take a spin with friends or a bike club to get started.
You‟ll feel more comfortable and you can learn the rules
of the road and make new friends in the process!”
Lillian D.

Joyous Commuting?!
“August 27, 2010, I got to see
and feel fat cold raindrops falling
out of a clear blue sky on a hot
afternoon. Miraculous.”
One Speed: Go blogger John
Romeo Alpha
“Had the most amazing ride to work today:
52 degrees, big dramatic desert sky, down
Washington past the Capitol and the
orange trees. I felt almost sorry for the
people who had to experience this day at
more than 15 MPH from their metal and
glass cages,” Libby Coyner
