Year 11 Updates and Period 6 A reminder that Year 11 will be sitting their second set of mocks during the first week back. It is vital every student attends during this period as these mocks will provide an accurate indicator of where your child needs further support and an indicator of their current level. We have spent time this week discussing priorities for Year 11 over the half term. Students understand they should work through a reasonable revision schedule throughout the half term and ensure they build in time to rest and relax. I will be contacting you all shortly after half term regarding the end of Year 11 celebrations which will include the reward trip, Prom, Year Book and hoodies. As ever, if you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mr Williams (Head of Year) or Mrs Chappell (Pastoral Support Worker).

Enrichment Day to Yorkshire Wildlife ParkIt started off a very cold day, so a visit to the café was definitely in order to warm us all up. Despite the cold it was still a very enjoyable day. The many animals we were fortunate to see was amazing: mischievous Meerkats and Mongoose, powerful Polar Bears, Tigers, Lions, very noisy Lemurs, elegant Giraffes, boastful Baboons, rather sleepy Painted Dogs, very shy Leopards, plus many others. All in all we had a super day and it was a privilege to see such amazing animals. As the day progressed the sun came out and we were able to have our picnic lunch in the sunshine. A super enriching day out was had by all.

Student LeadersOur new team of Student Leaders have impressed so far with their support for the school community. They have supported a range events from Parents’ Evening to Industry Day last Friday. They were a necessary part of the team that worked together to put on such a large and successful event. Thank you!

Year 12 Mock ResultsOn Monday 19 February, Year 12 will receive their mock results during an assembly. This will be followed by 1-2-1 meetings for each student with their Form Tutor to discuss intervention, concerns and celebrations. This is an important time for Year 12 to reflect on their progress and direct their efforts on particular areas of focus to enable further progress.

OF THE WEEK

As we all look forward to half-term after what has been a truly busy five weeks, what better time for Year 11 and 13 students to turn their attention towards their exams. Yes, it’s important you rest and catch up with friends and family, but have you considered the fact that experts say it’s better to start revision sooner, rather than later. To help you out, here are a few other ‘Top Tips’ to help you get the most out of revision:

1. Create a Revision Timetable 2. Practice, Practice, Practice (Past Papers) 3. Collaborate with Classmates in Groups 4. Take Regular Study Breaks (but don’t spend all of your time on a break!) 5. Understand Your Learning Style (once you understand you’re a visual, auditory, reading/writing or kinaesthetic learner, then remembering and recalling new information will become much easier!) 6. Variety is the Spice of Life! Mix up your study habits and methods by listening to podcasts, watching videos or documentaries, moving to a new study area or even something as simple as using different colours for your study notes. 7. Use Mind Maps to Connect Ideas. 8. Adapt for Different Subjects – For example, Flashcards are an ideal study aid to help you prepare for a language exam where you need to remember key terms.

Take Notes – Why? Because… Highlight Effectively… Make Mind Maps Matter…

KarateA special mention to Arthur Sharpe who has recently achieved his Black Belt on his first attempt. He started Karate 3 years ago and has worked really hard. Well done Arthur!

Netball - On Monday night AHS had two fantastic Netball matches against Manor School. Even though we did not come home with a win, all students embraced the ethos of the school by showing resilience, compassion for each other and teamwork. Star players of the matches were Antonia Sorica and Jess Taylor who were both consistent in strong defence play.

Cricket

The year 8 Cricket team continued from where they left off at the end of last season finishing joint top of the area indoor cricket league. They lost only to Tadcaster but beat York High and Fulford. George Pye and Feargus Brown were the pick of the bowlers and Will Leonard was brilliant with the bat. Well done to all involved.

@AHSTextiles: GCSE Textiles, superb standard of work.

AHS English Writing BlogStudents are warmly invited and encouraged to visit the new AHS English writing blog at www.ahswriting.wordpress.com.

Here, students can explore examples of their teachers’ writing, as well as having the opportunity to submit their own writing to be read by peers and teachers. Students are encouraged to submit examples of their own personal, creative writing, or pieces they have done in class and are proud of. Through the blog, students can then read and comment on each other’s work, or directly Tweet their writing to the AHS English Twitter feed.

All students need to do is click on the ‘Submit Writing’ button on the main menu, type it up or copy and paste it from a document, and wait for it to be approved by their teacher. After that, their writing will appear on the website for all to read!

Blog Post of the WeekBy Abigail Emerson, 8Ob

https://ahswriting.wordpress.com/2018/02/05/pale-demon-by-abigail-emerson/

She had a smile like a clown, but the face of the devil. She had long twig fingers that gripped onto her previous meal, but her eyes were gripped onto me, I believed I was the dessert. Her body cricked and crimpled as she creeps towards me. I shiver and scream at the terrorising torture, my blood flows forward towards the creature. She touched the blood and it curdled, then she lowered her head towards the ground and ate the curdled blood. This gave me enough time to whack her with a rotted rusty brass pipe and run. My feet glided across the wet, muddy grass making it hard to get away. I ran into the middle of the road waiting for the creature to catch up with me - and it did. It ran at me, but I moved back letting it be hit by a bus. I checked its pulse; there was none of course because it kept smiling as it turned to dust at the sun rising.

Flash Marking SystemFrom September, the English department will be taking part in a nationwide marking trial run by the Education Endowment Fund. The trial will focus on the impact of a code-based ‘Flash marking’ system on student progress and teacher workload.

The trial will focus on students who enter Year 10 in September 2018. Please see attached letter for further information.

If you have any questions, please email Mrs McMurdo (Head of English) at: [email protected]. For an overview of the project, please visit: https://educationendowmentfoundation.org.uk/projects-and-evaluation/projects/flash-marking/.

07 February 2018 Dear Parent/Carer, Research Study – FLASH Marking in English We are pleased to let you know that Archbishop Holgate’s School has signed up to take part in a national research and development project called FLASH marking. The head teacher has given permission for the programme to be delivered to all pupils starting Year 10 in September 2018. The project will run until these pupils leave school in June 2020. FLASH marking is a programme designed to provide simple and helpful written feedback to pupils in their English lessons. It provides a series of codes to explain where pupils have done something well and to show them areas where they can develop their learning and make further progress. The codes are used instead of grading. The programme has been developed by Meols Cop High School in Southport. They will be training English teachers at your child’s school in this feedback method. FLASH marking is designed to improve children’s attainment and progress in English Language and English Literature. The coding system allows teachers to provide individualised feedback which pupils can then act on in order to improve and develop in English. Schools will be randomly selected to participate in this intervention. Half of the schools which have agreed to be part of the study will receive the FLASH marking intervention while half will not, and will continue with their usual marking practices. Previous studies have shown that high quality feedback can have a positive impact on children’s academic performance. Meols Cop High School have delivered FLASH marking in a small number of schools already and feel that it has the potential to support pupils’ English attainment. A team from Durham University are working with Meols Cop High School to study the impact of FLASH marking on children’s English attainment. To enable us to do this we will be using pupils’ GCSE English grades. To help us with this research the evaluators will access the National Pupil Database (NPD) to obtain Key Stage 2 data and GCSE results in English through linking with the National Pupil Database (NPD). The information will also include details such as gender and free school meal status to allow further evaluation. All pupil and assessment data will be treated in the strictest confidence and never be made public. No individuals will be identified or identifiable. The data for your child’s school will be analysed anonymously, together with data from other schools, and no individual pupils or schools will be named in any report. The data will be anonymised (no names will be attached) and shared by Durham University with the Education Endowment Foundation data archive. We hope you will support this important study. If you do not wish for us to use your child’s data, you can opt out by signing below and returning the form to Mrs McMurdo by 15th February 2018. Your child will not be disadvantaged in any way. If you have further questions about the project or the evaluation you can contact us directly. Contact details are below:
