About Us
“In Harmony, Achieving Excellence”
Dear colleagues,
Through harmonious partnerships between pupils, staff, parents and our
community, Valentines High School, a mixed comprehensive school of 1300
pupils in Redbridge, East London has achieved outstanding results. We have
regularly been in the top 5% of non-selective secondary schools for progress at
GCSE. In 2017 and 2018 we achieved Progress 8 scores of 0.61 and 0.75. We
achieved an ALPS 3 in 2018 and ALPS 2 in 2019.
Striving for excellence in all we do is part of our culture at Valentines High School,
as recognised in our Ofsted report:
“The ethos of the school promotes a strong learning culture in which students are
valued for who they are and what they contribute to the school's collective
identity. Harmonious relationships are a most marked feature of the school. Very
good teaching promotes very good learning and results in students achieving very
well.”
With 85% of our pupils from ethnic minorities, the school boasts a student body
with over 50 home languages.
We hope you will consider engaging our services to provide high quality CPDL and
school to school support based on strategies of proven effectiveness. If you would
like to visit to VHS, we would be delighted to host you. We can arrange for you to
observe our practice and speak to our staff on whole school issues or on subject
specific areas.
We look forward to working with you,
Richard Laws, Headteacher
Steve Woodley, Assistant Headteacher, Teaching School Leader
In September 2011 we became one of the first 100 Teaching Schools to offer
career professional development and learning to schools in the area as well as
providing high quality training for our own staff. We are also involved in initial
teacher training, ensuring new teachers are of the highest calibre.
As well as offering training and support, teaching schools identify and co-ordinate
expertise in partner schools, using the best leaders and teachers to:
work with other strategic partners, including universities, to train new
entrants to the profession
lead peer-to-peer learning
spot and nurture leadership potential
provide support for other schools when needed
Teaching Schools work together within an alliance - a group of schools and other
partners that is supported by the leadership of a teaching school.
Our current alliance partners are:
Apex Primary, Ilford
Highams Park School, Waltham Forest
Holy Family School, Waltham Forest
Ilford County High School, Ilford
Lister Community School, Newham
University of East London
We welcome a large number of trainee teachers each year by working in
partnership with a range of HEI providers, as well as working with SCITT providers
and offering training through the Schools Direct route.
Valentines is a Leading Edge school and as such we work closely with schools to
raise standards through joint projects, in school support and staff training. We
offer school-to school support through the Teaching School programme, and in
addition, we offer bespoke support and CPD to schools or groups of schools in
areas such as raising achievement at GCSE and A-level, student leadership, middle
leadership, EAL strategies and coaching. This is in the form of personalised training
and/or follow-up support for individuals or groups.
Some of the areas that we have delivered CPDL and support to other schools
include:
Literacy across the curriculum
Developing an outstanding KS3
Closing attainment gaps at GCSE
Vertical tutoring
Developing an independent learning culture in the 6th form
Strategies for students with English as an Additional Language
Student Leadership
Coaching
Improving Teacher Programme
Designed by experienced and successful school leaders this highly effective programme gives teachers a set of skills and strategies to reach the next teaching level. For example, it enables them to:
· Deliver good quality lessons that have a measurable impact on pupil performance.
· Increase their job satisfaction and quality of experience
· Work more effectively as active members of their school team
The programme:
The ITP provides opportunities to deepen their understanding of high-quality classroom practice and teaching and learning. Participants improve their teaching through facilitated practice and structured opportunities to reflect on teaching approaches and their quality and impact. There are opportunities to do structured learning walks and observe best practice in classrooms.
Content includes BFL, Assessment, AFL, engagement, differentiation, and starters and plenaries
The ITP is particularly suitable for NQTs and teachers either new to the profession or those in need of a refresher!
Commitment and cost:
The programme consists of 4 sessions.
All sessions take place at Valentines High School. Lunch and all resources are provided.
The cost per programme is £249 in total for three participants, £99 for each.
Impact:
Here are some delegate comments about the Improving Teacher Programme:
“It has made me more inspired and confident to use a range of challenging and
engaging strategies in my lessons”
“It has motivated and inspired me. I have used strategies from the course and gained an outstanding in a recent lesson observation”
“The course has challenged my own practice and encouraged me to make resources that I have shared with others in my department”
“Each session had a clear focus allowing delegates to feel secure that presentations, tasks, learning walks and discussion were all designed to promote learning in a specific area. The practical aspect of the sessions was commented on by delegates and the reason they felt this stood out, was there were things that could change/be tried in their classrooms the next day. “

Valentines Sixth Form Leadership Programme
Course Outline:
The Valentines 6th Form Leadership programme is aimed at improving post 16 provision within schools. The course includes five sessions focused on three core components which contribute to the running of a successful 6th form. The course starts by looking at 6th form leadership and the crucial decisions that school leaders can make in ensuring success at A-level. This is followed by the 6th form Mindset which looks closely at student behaviours and how these can be changed to maximise their chances of success. Finally we look at how teaching and learning strategies, such as exam readiness, can help students prepare for the rigour of linear A-levels. Crucially, the course looks at how these three components work closely together; providing an opportunity for 6th form leaders to share ideas and apply these to their own school context.
Programme:
1. 6th form leadership: USP, Vision/Ethos and Entry Requirements
2. The 6th form Mindset 1: Vision, Effort and Attitude
3. Teaching and Learning: An Exam Readiness Focus
4. The 6th form Mindset 2: Systems and Practice

The Valentines Middle Leaders Programme is aimed at improving middle leadership within schools. The course is a thorough and detailed series of sessions covering every aspect of outstanding middle leadership, and delivered in sequence. Starting with a perfect middle leader in mind, the course splits up outstanding middle leadership into different areas, each delivered as a module in a separate session. Crucially, the course provides inspiration, ideas, theory and numerous real-life examples on every facet of an excellent middle leader. The course runs over 6 separate sessions meaning each cohort receives sustained support, which is integral to helping the delegates change their habits and improve their Leadership. The modules delivered are:
Vision and values
Time management and what makes a great middle leader
Leadership approaches
Team-building and man-management
Change management
Difficult conversations

School to School Support
At Valentines we are experienced in offering support to others. In the past, we
have provided school to school support as a Leading Edge school and as a Training
school. As part of our Teaching school status we are happy to discuss personalised
support to meet your requirements.
We have worked with both the secondary and primary sectors in a number of
areas, such as teaching and learning, AFL, coaching, Behaviour for Learning, use of
data/tracking, developing an outstanding sixth form, EAL, subject moderation etc.
If you would us like to work with you, we will be pleased to discuss opportunities
for support and arrange appropriate visits and training, on a short or longer term
basis.
Specialist Leaders of Education
At Valentines High School, our Specialist Leaders of Education (SLEs) offer a wide
range of expertise. SLEs are designated by Teaching Schools as they are
outstanding middle and senior leaders who have the skills to develop the
leadership capacity of individuals and teams in schools, using coaching or
facilitating that draws on their knowledge and expertise in their specialist area.
The work will contribute to improving outcomes for children.

Experience: During the past 5 years, I have redeveloped the way in which my own
school uses data to track pupil progress. More recently, I have been involved in
supporting teachers on how to use data effectively both in my own school and as
part of Outreach sessions offered by our Teaching school. The focus of these
Outreach sessions has included “How to use pupil data in the most effective and
powerful way to influence pupil attainment” and “The use of AFL in
successful sixth form teaching and learning”. In addition I have led a staff
Learning Group on how to create “outstanding engagement” in lessons and run
whole school inset looking at the “role of effective feedback in pupil progress”,
“assessment from 2014 onwards” and “tracking vulnerable groups” I am also a
facilitator for the Improving Teacher and Outstanding Teacher programmes.
