POPE FRANCIS IN THE PHILIPPINES
BY — KATRINA ILEDAN
MANILA: Pope Francis’ recent visit to the
Philippines in January captured the hearts
and minds of Filipinos. The Philippines, the
only Catholic-majority nation in Asia,
needed the charismatic pope to inspire
collective spiritual rejuvenation and en-
courage sustained political reform. Pope
Francis has swiftly emerged as an adored
religious figure in modern history. The Pope highlighted three main
issues that needed to gain attention in the Philippines: ending sys-
tematic corruption and social injustice, tackling climate change,
and exercising responsible parenthood. Pope Francis urged the
country’s leadership and larger society to make a strong effort to
reject every form of corruption since it diverts resources from the
poor. He wanted everyone to feel included in the community.
Motivated to uplift the spirit of those affected by the devastating
super-typhoon Haiyan, Pope Francis also visited the central Visa-
yan Islands despite the heavy rain and winds. Since the Philip-
pines is one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change,
Pope Francis humbly addressed his views on how climate change
is mostly human-induced. The Pope also discussed the national
debate over the Reproductive Health bill that was passed in late
2013, which mandates that the state should assist citizens in gain-
ing access to contraceptives and other means of responsible
parenthood. Since the Philippines has one of the fastest popula-
tion growth rates in the world, he implored Catholics to make re-
sponsible decisions concerning parenthood. The Pope left a
huge impression on the country and inspired millions of Catholics
to stand by their faith.
