Employees of the Month: December 2011

EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR:

2011

(Marisu’s Message Corner)

Holidays at the Athenaeum

MICHELLE GECOSOMichelle Gecoso is one of the friendly faces and cheerful voices in Guest Relations at the Front Desk. She has worked at The Athenaeum for

six years and is a previous Employee of the Month. She and her husband have two sons. Michelle likes to spend time with her family; they enjoy watching movies and going to the mall.

JOSE LUIS RODRIGUEZJose Luis Rodriguez has been a valued cook in The Athenaeum’s kitchen for six years. He has been married for

25 years to his wife, Maria. They have two grown daughters. Outside of work, Jose Luis is a fan of the Mexican soccer team Chivas and enjoys watching their games.

MIGUEL PEREZMiguel Perez has worked at The Athenaeum for about 15 years and is currently Lead Server/Captain. He works hard to organize everything in the morning,

so that the club is ready for the day. He has been married for 20 years and has 3 children. In his free time, Miguel enjoys spending time with his children and playing baseball.

JESUS DE LA TORRE

Jesus has been at The Athenaeum since 1998. Since then, he has been a much relied

upon dining room server. Jesus has previously been Employee of the Month (four times) and Employee of the Year (once). He spends his time away from The Ath with his

wife of 17 years and their three children.

Roses are red,Violets are blue,Sugar is sweet,And so are you.

When February comes around, our thoughts usually turn to the 14th of the month — Valentine’s Day. According to Wikipedia, the first recorded association of Valentine’s Day with romantic love is found in Geoffrey Chaucer’s Parlement of Foules. The poem was written to honor the first anniversary of the engagement of King Richard II of England to Anne of Bohemia. A treaty providing for their marriage was signed on May 2, 1381. They were both only 15 years old when they married eight months later.

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with your sweetheart at The Athenaeum. We will have dinner and dancing and a selection of entrées to enjoy the evening. And, dance cheek to cheek with your sweetheart in between courses or after dinner. The perfect evening awaits. All you need to do is call (626) 395-8282 to make your reservations.

Cooking with chocolate as the main ingredient has now been a tradition for the February Chef ’s Cooking Class. Learn how to make chocolate part of a savory Mexican favorite sauce — mole; and desserts galore — chocolate truffles, chocolate caramel tart, chocolate peanut butter pie, chocolate chili ice cream and chocolate soufflé. The Chef ’s Cooking Class is scheduled on Saturday, February 11.

We celebrate the Carnaval of Brazil on Friday, February 17. This is an annual festival held forty-six days before Easter. The term “carnaval” from carnelevare, to remove meat, symbolizes the Christian or Catholic tradition of abstaining from meat during Lent. So, Carnaval, is the celebration prior to the abstinence from meat. We will have Brazilian dancers along with the traditional Brazilian dishes that our culinary team will prepare for the evening. A sampling includes – fejioada (stew of beans with beef and pork), frango con quiabo (chicken with okra), Brazilian salpicao (chicken salad), moqueca (traditional Brazilian seafood stew) and churrasco (an assortment of grilled meats). It will be a fun evening, so make your reservations today.

Back by popular demand, our wine cellar dinner makes a comeback on Friday, February 10. Seating is limited so call early to secure your place.

Our culinary travels take us to Costa Rica on Monday, February 6 and Thailand on Monday, February 27 for international nights on Mondays.

We wish to thank all the members who participated in our passport program. Your continued support makes the Athenaeum truly vibrant.

I look forward to seeing you at The Athenaeum. Please drop by my office when you are next at the club.

Athenaeum WeddingAlice Shapley and Edwin

Schauble were married on Sunday,

October 30th, 2011 on the Olive

Terrace, followed by a joyous

and sunshine-filled afternoon

of cocktails, lunch, and dancing

at The Athenaeum. The couple

were both graduate students at

Caltech, Alice in Astronomy and

Edwin in Geology. Alice and Edwin overlapped for several

years in graduate school and remember seeing each other

around campus. However, it was not until much later that

they actually met at the wedding of another pair of former

Caltech Astronomy and Geology graduate students. Alice

and Edwin are now both professors at UCLA. Alice studies

how galaxies form and evolve, while Edwin uses isotopes to

study ancient environments. Included among their guests

were many Caltechers past, present (and future).

Serves 8-10

12 oz. bittersweet chocolate, coarsely chopped

1⅓ cups granulated sugar

½ cup bourbon or brandy

2 sticks unsalted butter, cut into

10 pieces, at room temperature

5 large eggs, at room temperature

1½ tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 pint fresh raspberries

1 pint heavy cream, whipped

1. Position a rack in the center of the oven and preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly butter a 9 inch round cake pan and line the bottom with parchment or waxed paper; butter the paper. Put the cake pan in a shallow roasting pan and set aside until needed.2. Put the chopped chocolate in a medium bowl and keep close at hand. 3. In a 2 quart sauce pan mix 1 cup of the sugar and the bourbon and cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves and the mixture comes to a full boil. Immediately pour the hot syrup over the chocolate and stir with a rubber spatula until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is smooth. 4. Piece by piece, stir the butter into the chocolate mixture. Make certain that each piece of butter is melted before you add another. 5. Put the eggs and the remaining third cup of sugar in a medium bowl and whisk until the eggs thicken slightly. Beating with the whisk, add the eggs (slowly) to the chocolate mixture and whisk until well blended. Gently whisk in the flour.6. Pour and scrape the batter into the prepared pan, running your spatula over the top to smooth it. Pour enough hot water into the roasting pan to come about one inch up the sides of the cake pan. Bake the cake for exactly 30 minutes, at which point the top will have a thin, dry crust. Remove from oven and let cool slightly.7. Remove the cake pan from its water bath, wipe the pan dry, and cover the top of the cake with a sheet of plastic wrap. Invert the cake onto a flat plate, peel off the parchment, and quickly but gently invert again onto a serving platter; remove the plastic.8. Cut the cake into 8-10 portions and serve with fresh raspberries and whipped cream.
