1812 John Wickham HouseA guided tour of this National Historic Landmark allows guests to explore aspects of life in the early 19th century. In the public fi rst-fl oor rooms, ornate decorations helped John and Elizabeth Wickham present a picture of leisure and refi nement. The basement offers an intact view of the original enslaved servants’ quarters.

Guided tours are offered 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m.,Tuesday-Saturday and 12:30-4 p.m. on Sunday.

Edward V. Valentine Sculpture StudioEdward Virginius Valentine (1838-1930) was a prominent sculptor whose works include the Recumbent Lee statue at Washington & Lee University and the statue of Thomas Jefferson at the Jefferson Hotel. His studio is one of only four surviving 19th century sculpture studios in the United States that is open to the public.

Creating History: The Valentine Familyand the Creation of a MuseumThis exhibition illustrates how every person creates, through personal experience, his or her own usable history. A new

interpretation of this popular exhibition, “Creating History,” is now viewable on the second fl oor of the Wickham House and features additional objects from the History Center’s founding collection. The exhibition explores the Valentine family’s collecting enterprises, Valentine’s Meat Juice

and ways in which the History Center’s interpretation of Richmond’s history has evolved.

About the ValentineRichmond History CenterFor more than 100 years, the Valentine Richmond History Center has told the story of Richmond through exhibitions, city tours, special events, research opportunities, interactive history programs and guided tours of the 1812 John Wickham House.

With a renowned costume and textile collection, thousands of objects and more than one million photographs, the History Center is committed to preserving Richmond’s history and serving as a resource for visitors and residents.

Admission includes self-guided access to exhibition galleries and the Edward V. Valentine Sculpture Studio, as well as a guided tour of the 1812 John Wickham House.

NEW EXHIBITION

This is Richmond, Virginia –Opening Fall 2014The Valentine Richmond History Center plans to open a newly renovated, long-term exhibition space that will showcase Richmond’s history. The renovation will include several smaller galleries as well as improved education, visitor orientation and conference spaces. With this project, the History Center works to be a facilitator of community conversations, a leader among urban history museums, and the principal steward of Richmond’s history and culture.

THE VIRGINIA STATE CAPITOL, designed by Thomas Jefferson, was the fi rst public building in the New World to resemble a Roman Classical temple. Home to America’s oldest legislative assembly, this historic landmark has witnessed events that have shaped Virginia and the nation since 1788. Renovation of the original Capitol and the addition of new wings for the Virginia House and Senate were completed in 1906. In May 2007, the Capitol re-opened after a major restoration and expansion project. Visitors will fi nd historical statuary and paintings, rotating exhibitions, a gift shop and cafe, and newly restored legislative chambers.

JOHN MARSHALL HOUSE, Home to the fourth Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, the Federal style brick house (1790) boasts a rich collection of family-owned furnishings, original features and the largest collection of Marshall family memorabilia in the country. Owned and operated by the APVA Preservation Virginia, the house is on the National Historic Register. The Cellar Gift Shop features items by local artists. Admission prices and hours of operation vary.

Established in 1847, Hollywood Cemetery is the fi nal resting place of two U.S. presidents, Richmond philanthropist Lewis Ginter, writer Ellen Glasgow, Confederate President Jefferson Davis, Civil War Generals George Pickett and J.E.B. Stuart and thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers.

ProgramsThe Valentine Richmond History Center expands children’s understanding of Richmond’s past through a variety of innovative programs. Program curricula are designed around Virginia’s Standards of Learning, and trained History Center teachers conduct all programs.

Adult programs are tailored to more advanced levels of learning. The curriculum seeks to expand a person’s appreciation of Richmond’s past. FROM DOWNTOWN, take Franklin Street east to Capitol Square. Turn left onto 9th Street, then take the second right onto Marshall Street. Turn left onto 11th Street, then left onto Clay Street. The History Center is on the left. Turn left onto 10th Street to park in the History Center lot on the left.

FROM I-64 WESTBOUND, take exit 190 (5th Street). Turn left onto Marshall Street and go to 11th Street. Turn left onto 11th Street, then left onto Clay Street. The History Center is on the left. Turn left onto 10th Street to park in the History Center lot on the left.

FROM I-64 EASTBOUND, stay on I-95 South when the two merged highways separate, and follow the next set of directions.

FROM I-95 NORTH OR SOUTH, take exit 74C (Broad Street). Go west on Broad to 11th Street and turn right. Go north on 11th and take the second left onto Clay Street. The History Center is on your left. Turn left onto 10th Street to park in the History Center lot on the left.
