    FANTASTIC HIKING IN THE DOLOMITES OF ITALY

    July 17-28, 2015AMC Adventure Travel # 15

    Dear Prospective Participant:

    Thank you for your inquiry about our trip Fantastic Hiking in the Dolomites of Italy,scheduled for July 2015. We will hike from village to village through gentle slopes of alpinemeadows which are below pale towering peaks of dolomitic rock. The Dolomites are the sunnyside of Alps, beautiful, warm and friendly. The mountains are colorful with jutting peaks andlush valleys. We will stay in three villages and spend two nights in a high altitude rifugio (hut).In each village our evenings will be spent in friendly chalets frequented by hikers. We will enjoyspectacular views of mountain hamlets, and wooded valleys.

    HIKING IN THE DOLOMITES:

    All our hikes will be day hikes. On thedays that we hike to the next village our luggagewill be transported to the next chalet where we

    will be staying. The hikes will start near each ofthe chalets. Some hikes will start by taking skilifts and then hiking either back to the hotel orto the next village. Lunch is not covered in thetrip cost, but we will be able to stop at hutsalong our way to sample their varied andwonderful menu items.

    The hiking pace will be the SLOW,STEADY, MOUNTAIN GUIDES PACE;

    this is a pace that will be used on every day

    hike, for intermediate and advancedintermediate. It is the pace used by the AlpineGuides, which recommend at these altitudes formaintaining stamina. We will maintain this pacewithout exception. This is a proven mountainhikers pace; if this is not your pace, then thistrip may not be for you.

    We like to stop occasionally to enjoy themagnificent mountain views, look for animals,and admire the alpine wildflowers, which shouldbe at their peak, or take photographs. Valleyelevations are 4000 to 5000 feet and our hikeswill take us no higher than 9000 feet, howeverthe rifugio is close to 9000 feet. The day hikeswill range from 5 to 7 hours in length and wecan look forward to a delicious Austrian/Italiandinner at the end of the day!

    ACCOMMODATIONS, MEALS AND

    ACTIVITIES:

    In each village we will stay in 3 Star hikerfriendly chalets. We will be accommodated indouble rooms (a European double room usuallyfeatures two twin mattresses in a single framebed. Each bed is made up individually, but theyare side by side.) with accompanying bathroom.In the rifugio we will stay either in doublerooms or in dormitories with shared bathroomsdown the hall.

    Breakfasts will vary from continental buffet to hearty German selections with cheese, meat,yogurt and fruit. All lunches will be on our daily outings and are not included in the trip price.Dinners will feature one or two selections from the menu at our 3 Star hotel/chalet or at themountain rifugio, and we will be eating together as a group.

    We will stay in picturesque villages of Selva, Corvara, and Dobbiacao; with two nights in themountain hut of Laguzoi Rifugio.

    Selva, the first village we will stay in, nestles in a small sunny bowl. The western walls of theSella massif form a magnificent backdrop for the village.

    Corvara, the next village we will stay in has population of about 700. An imposing whiteTyrolean church with bulbous steeple sets in the center of the village. Views of the sheer wallsof the Gruppo Sella aretruly awe inspiring

    there.

    Rifugio Lagazuoiperched above PassoFalzarego will providea stunning 360 degreeview of Dolomites andis located near someWorld War I tunnelsand fortifications.

    Dobbiacao, our laststop, is an attractiveand thriving Tyroleanvillage. From here wewill have our startingpoint to hike to thefamous Tre CIme di Lavaredo.

    Tentative Itinerary:Day 1Depart the USA on overnight flight to EuropeDay 2 Selva Transfer by chartered shuttle from airport to our hotel in Selva (D)Day 3 Selva - Full day hike in the Val Gardena. We will climb through one of the most famousformations in this area, the Sasslunga. We will return to the village in time to see some of itssights. (B) (D)Day 4 Selva-Corvara We walk straight from our hotel in Selva to a ski lift and take that to thetop of the pass. From there we hike down to Corvara in the Val Badia. Our luggage will betransported from Selva to Corvara. (B) (D)Day 5 Corvara We explore the Val Badia. We follow a pathway along a river through alovely village and then up the ski lift from where we traverse across a meadow with incredible

    views. (B) (D)Day 6 - Corvara We take a lift up to one ofthe famous mountains and follow a higherelevation track. (B) (D)Day 7 - Corvara-Lagazuoi Rifugio - We

    take a lift straight out from our hotel andcross a long broad plateau and then take acable car ride to the rifugio perched high ona craggy rock mountain, a site of WWIfortifications. Our luggage will betransported from Corvara to LagauzuoiRifugio. (B) (D)Day 8 Lagazuoi Rifugio We embark ona loop from our rifugio. We pass the ruinsof several World War I bunkers, and climbup through a maze of tunnels to return back

    to rifugio. (B) (D)Day 9 Lagazuoi Rifugio Tobalch/Dobbiaco We leave our mountainhut and traverse through more WWI ruins toCortina (a charming somewhat glitzyshopping haven) where we will spend partof the afternoon sightseeing. Then we willtake a bus to our hotel in Dobbiaco . Ourluggage will be transported from theLagauzuoi Rifugio to Dobbiaco. (B) (D)Day 10 Tobalch/Dobbiaco Layover day(B) (D)Day 11 Tobalch/Dobbiaco We will takepublic transportation to Rifugio Auronzowhere we will start the hike around TreCime.     If you are not a member of the AMC there is a guest fee of $50. You may prefer to join theAMC. Membership is $50 for an individual, $75 for a family, and $25 for juniors (under 30) andseniors (over 69).     SAFETY, RISKS AND HAZARDS:

    As participant safety is a high priority for all AMC-sponsored events, procedures and policieshave been developed to attempt to limit participant risk. Participants are expected to work withthe leaders to reduce risks and make the experience successful for all. Participants should beaware that there are risks associated with outdoor adventure activities, including but not limitedto adverse weather and environmental conditions, remote locations of our trips, andtransportation in vehicles, on foot, by boat, or on a bike. Aside from any personal medicalproblems, participants should be aware of the possibilities of bug bites, dehydration, sun burnand other heat or cold related problems. You should regularly use sun screen, take care to beadequately hydrated and bring water on all day trips. Please carefully read and sign theAMCParticipant Acknowledgement and Assumption of Risks and Release and Indemnity Agreementand contact us if you have any questions. Participants understanding of these risks and

    adherence to our policies and procedures can contribute to making this experience rewarding foreveryone.

    RESERVING A PLACE AND PAYMENT SCHEDULE:The land cost of the trip is $2875.00, plus estimated airfare of $1,635 to $1,835. To reserve

    your place, please contact the trip leader or co leader for an application, the Confidential MedicalForm and the Acknowledgment & Assumption of Risks & Release and Indemnity Agreement.Once you have been approved for the Adventure Travel trip, you will be required to send to theLeader your deposit of $1,000.00made out to:Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC). $100.00of this initial $1,000.00 deposit is a non-refundable administration fee. Once we receive your

    application and other forms and have approved you for the trip, well send you additionalinformation on the trip, including planned hikes, equipment lists, and travel tips. The maximumnumber of participants is 18, so apply early to reserve your place (the last trip in 2009 had awaiting list).

    CANCELLATION POLICY:

    If you cancel after being accepted for the trip, $100 is non-refundable, but if you cancel afterMay 1, 2015 minimally $200 is nonrefundable, if (and only if) another person takes your place.We will establish a waiting list. Should another person replace you, you will be charged only the$200 cancellation fee. However, your cancellation shall not raise the cost of the trip to any of theparticipants or the leaders. Thus, if you cancel and are not replaced, you will forfeit the $200plus the per capita expenses already incurred and any other unpaid expenses for which the tripcannot obtain a refund. You may forfeit the entire trip fee. Flight tickets once purchasedbecome your property and are generally non-refundable. We strongly recommend that you

    purchase travel insurance. Information on a company recommended by the AMC will be sent toyou.PLEASE NOTE: The price of the AMC Adventure Travel trip is given in good faith based oncurrent tariffs and rates and is subject to change.Any tariff, exchange rate increases will bepassed on to participants.

    Conversely if the minimum number of participants does not sign up, the leaders reserve the rightto cancel the trip and refund the amounts paid. If the trip is full, we can put your name on awaiting list, or return your deposit.

    AIR COSTS (ESTIMATED $1635-1835):

    Leaders will explore the best possible options for air travel most likely on Austria Airlines or

    Lufthansa, since they offer good connections. You will receive notification when we are awareof a good fare. For this trip we estimate a range of $1635-1835. We will assist you in any wayto make your reservations, but you should not make any booking on your own without consultingthe leaders. Once you purchase tickets, they are wholly owned by you. It is your responsibilityto get yourself to our hotel in Selva, Italy if your flight does not arrive in time to meet ourchartered bus from the arrival airport. The leaders only provide chartered bus transportationwhen you arrive at the airport by the time we specify.

    FLIGHTS:The reservation of the flight is your responsibility. Once a trip is a GO (there is enough

    participants to run the trip), we will let you know and provide you with our flightrecommendations as well as a decision as to which airport our charter bus will be picking us up

    for transfer to Selva.

    Trip insurance is recommended, since an illness, accident or death in the family can interferewith your plans. Trip insurance can be obtained through your travel agent or the leaders willprovide you with choices of approved trip insurance companies.

    AMC Adventure Travel trips are led by volunteers on a non-profit basis. Any monies left overafter trip expenses are covered will be refunded to the participants. As leaders our goals for thegroup are to have fun, stretch your skills, and savor a foreign culture at reasonable cost and in thecompany of other adventurers with similar interests. We encourage your individualcontributions, cooperation and good humor to enrich the groups experience. We expect you to

    participate as part of a group and abide by the leaders decisions, and work towards the grouphaving a good time. Be prepared to help your fellow hikers and spend time with otherparticipants on the trip. In doing so, you will enjoy the trip to the maximum.

    YOUR LEADERS:

    LEADER: GINETTE BEAUDOINGinette has been a member of the AMC since 1988 and has led several day and weekend trips

    in the White Mountains of NH, as well as various parts of Maine. She lead this adventure tripwith co leader Don Parker in July of 2011, with Jenni Blumenthal in August of 2012 and co leadthis trip with Terry Peters in July 2009 with 19 participants. She has also lead Adventure traveltrips to Yosemite national Park for the AMC. She has participated in numerous AMC MajorExcursions to Switzerland and Austria, involving hiking and cross country skiing. She has hikedin the Stubai valley as part of a 2006 Major Excursion and hiked to 20 high Alpine Hutsthroughout Austria, Germany and Switzerland. She has hiked the NH 4000 footers. Her interestsinclude hiking, photography, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, travel, information volunteerfor AMC and introducing others to outdoor activities.

Anna leads trips in the WhiteMountains and most recently led an excursion to Ghost Ranch in New Mexico and to Mt Rainierand Olympic National Parks in Washington. Anna spends part of each summer backpacking as aSierra Club participant. This is in addition to trips that she takes to all corners of theworld. Anna has recently completed SOLO Advanced Wilderness First Aid course.
