Inland EmpireChapter

Forget boring old road runs that conquer miles and miles ofconcrete and asphalt, the XTERRA Vail Lake Trail Run is a "mudin your eye, don't twist your ankle on that rock" kind of run. Getdirty, and deal with the elements Mother Nature dishes out. Thereare spots on this course where there isn't even a trail, just a redarrow half-mile away telling you where to go. It's up to you to pick

your route, and the fun is in choosing which way to go. These are, in fact, the same 5k and 10k paths that Sunday's XTER-RA competitors will tackle on their way to the finish line. Get to know Temecula Valley in a whole new way - all while breath-ing in some fresh air and exercising your way to the start of a great day.

Awards go to the top three in each age group and the 10k women's winner earns roundtrip airfare to Hawaii fromHawaiian Airlines. Wahine holo nui! Hawaiian Airlines way of saying, 'run fast young lady!'

Of course the true beauty of the Trail Runs and 5k walk is the cause, with proceeds benefiting the Juvenile DiabetesResearch Foundation - Inland Empire Chapter.

them, this race is for you. Competitors will start with a 3k(1.9 mile) off-road trail run, follow with a 15k (9.3 mile)mountain bike, and finish up with a 5k (3.1 mile) trail run. It'sopen to athletes of all ages and skill levels, and you caneven race it as a two-or-three person relay team. Therugged off-road trails are identical to those being used forthe main event. XTERRA RACING

XTERRA SPORT

Jumping into a full-distance XTERRA the first time out can beintimidating – that’s why organizers created the XTERRA Sportrace. The sport competition uses the same course, but cutseach discipline in half. This race is ideal for newcomers, offer-ing a great introduction to the rigors of XTERRA.

THE TEMECULA COURSE

The swim is in Vail Lake, an 800-acre private lake in Temecula Valley. The water is expected to be somewhere in the mid-to-high 60's. Championship racers swim one 1,500-meter lap (750 meters for Sport competitors). From the lakeparticipants have about 100 yard little uphill jog to the swim-to-bike transition (T1). The 30-kilometer mountain bike course(15k Sport) offers a variety of terrain challenges and lots of rolling hills with rocks and boulders and soft dirt or muddepending on the weather. There are quite a few climbs, each offering magnificent views of the Valley from the top, followed by quick descents on twisting single track. The bike-to-run transition is back at the lake, giving friends and familythe chance to cheer. Like the bike course, the 10k trail run (5k Sport) heads up and down several rolling hills. There arewide open sections and sections that run through dense trees. The finish line is back where it all started, down by the lake.

Some of the world’s best triathletes, mountain bikers, trail runners, and adventureracers collide in the consummate individual challenge for outdoor athletes. As this is thefirst major race of the XTERRA U.S. Series, there is no telling how the competition willunfold. Off-season training - or lack thereof - could make a huge difference on this day.And as always with XTERRA - where Mother Nature is your toughest competitor -anything can and usually does happen. All qualifications aside, here are those mostlikely to walk away winners in California:

MEN’S FAVORITESSeth Wealing shocked the XTERRA Planet last year when he won the USA

Championship race and the U.S. Pro Series - becoming the first American to everaccomplish that feat. He backed it up with a third place finish (top American) at theXTERRA World Championship. AND last year he was the runner-up to Brent McMahonat Temecula. Add it all up and Wealing comes into the first one as the man to beat. Thatsaid, Conrad “the Caveman” Stoltz has healed from injuries suffered during a pre-ridecrash in Tahoe last year and is on a mission to reclaim his status as the King ofXTERRA. The two-time Olympian and XTERRA World Champion won in Temeculaback in 2005 and showed he’s in good form by winning the XTERRA South Africa titleon April 14. Josiah Middaugh finished strong last year with a 4th place finish in Mauiand he was third in Temecula a year ago. Greg Krause was 7th at XTERRA Worlds andis poised to break out. Mike Vine and Brian Smith are both peddle-to-the-medalmountain bikers that could potentially destroy this hilly course. Don’t count out AndrewNoble, who finished in the top five at all six U.S. Series races last season, and was 5thhere last season. Making his continental U.S. debut is the XTERA Amateur WorldChamp Rom Akerson from Costa Rica, who will be riding in his first race as a pro.

WOMEN FAVORITESIt appears we have another wonderful season of the McQuaid-Whitmore rivalry on the

horizon. McQuaid holds the upper-hand by winning the USA race, U.S. Series, and theWorld Championship (for the third time) last season. Whitmore, the all-time winningestXTERRA athlete with 32 race wins under her belt, won here in Temecula last year (butMcQuaid was victorious in SoCal in 2005). Over the last few years Candy Angle hasplaced third behind those two more times than she’d care to remember (including lastyear). Jennifer Smith had a breakout race at the USA Championship where she finished2nd. Smith was 4th here last year. Heather Fuhr is one of the most recognizable namesin multisport with a ton of Ironman victories, including the 1997 World Championship.Fuhr also won the Hawaiian Airlines Double twice for turning in the fastest combinedtimes in the Ironman World Championship and XTERRA World Championship (the tworaces are just eight days apart). Amber Monforte embarks on her second year as a prowhile Dara Marks Marino turns from pro mountain biking to XTERRA with this being herfirst-ever championship race.

XTERRA AMERICA TOUR SERIESThe XTERRA America Tour is designed to provide age group athletes with a bona-fide championship to compete forwithin their geographic region. At the end of the regular season the top performers in each of eight regions are invited tocompete against other athletes their same age - but from different regions - at the national championship in Nevada onSeptember 30. This year there are 50 races in 32 states across the country, as well as the U.S. Territories of Guam andSaipan. It marks the 11th straight year of expansion for the sport of XTERRA.

Here's how the Series works:1) There are eight regions, determined by a competitor's primary residence at the time of their first race:

NORTH EAST (NE) - Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York.MID ATLANTIC (MA) - Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington D.C.SOUTH EAST (SE) - Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin IslandsNORTH CENTRAL (NC) - Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky.SOUTH CENTRAL (SC) - Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas.MOUNTAIN (MT) - Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming.NORTH WEST (NW) - Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska.SOUTH WEST (SW) - California, Nevada, Arizona, Hawaii, Guam, Northern Marianas Islands, Pacific Territories.

2) Age Group: "XTERRA Age" is based on a competitor's age on December 31, 2007. Athletes compete in the followingage categories: 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60+ (w), 60-64 (m), 65+ (m), and new for2006 is the Challenged Athletes Division (which is not broken down by age group, simply gender).

3) Series competitors race for points at their choice of 50 events - including XTERRA Points Series (XPS) races &XTERRA Championship Series (XCS) races. Competitors are required to race and count points in at least one event inhis/her region. Competitors can enter as many events as they'd like, however, they count just their best three finishes.

4) Points are awarded to the top 15 finishers in each age group at each race. If you race at more than one XTERRAChampionship event, only the best finish counts at full points. Any other finishes earn points at the same rate as theXTERRA Points Series races. There are two points systems:

XTERRA Championship Series:

XTERRA Points Series:

5) The highest points scorers in each region are invited to compete for a national title at the XTERRA USA Championshipin Nevada (qualifying spots based on chart below). The competitor with the most points in their age group in eachXTERRA Region earns the title of XTERRA Regional Champion, and wins a custom racing jersey.

THE 12th XTERRA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Following an action-packed racing season that will span 16 countries with morethan 100 events, XTERRA will host its 12th XTERRA World Championship inMaui on October 28th. A season-ending blow-out like no other, the WorldChampionship is the culmination of a worldwide series of races held inArgentina, Saipan, New Zealand, South Africa, Italy, Denmark, Brazil, Japan,Austria, Germany, Costa Rica, United Kingdom, France, and the U.S.The race course, considered one of XTERRA's toughest and most grueling, will

consist of a 1.5-kilometer roughwater swim at Makena Beach, a grueling 30-kilometer mountain bike on the slopes of Haleakala, and an 11-kilometer trailrun. Access to this legendary course is permitted once a year - on race day.Conditions change radically from year to year, diminishing the advantage torepeat competitors, and perpetuating the course's stature as among the mostintimidating in the series.

The maxed-out field is limited to 600 competitors, who represent the best off-road, multisport athletes on the planet. It is a "winner take all" race, with one ofthe richest pro purses in multisport at $125,000, and it is awarded solely on thebasis of the Maui performance. Since this race is a stand-alone event, it offers aunique opportunity to competitors. Even those who have had a less than stellarseason, are given an opportunity to redeem themselves and earn the covetedtitle of XTERRA World Champion.

Last year Hamish Carter from New Zealand captured the men’s championshipand Melanie McQuaid from Canada won her third world championship in fouryears.

A special prime, the Hawaiian Airlines Double, will pay $2,500 to the man andwoman with the fastest combined Hawaii Ironman and XTERRA WorldChampionship time. Only two weeks and a narrow channel of ocean separatethe two events, which each year attract a growing number of endurance athletes. In 2006, Spain’s Eneko Llanos won the men’s double and Switzerland’s SybilleMatter won the women’s double.

The award-winning TEAM TV crew will be there to televise all the action for aone-hour sports special which will air across the national via national syndication

THE XTERRA PLANETAt the finish line of the very first race in 1996 it was clear that XTERRA wasgoing to be more than just a one-off event. There was passion in the eyes ofthe competitors and an unwavering feeling that XTERRA was destined tobecome a lifestyle…a movement. We believed. So much so we restructuredthe company to keep it growing. Look at where XTERRA is today…

- The first piece of expansion started with more races, a lot more. From one to 100+ in 16 countries in a 10-year spanincluding a 50-stop America Tour for amateurs and a full-blown European Tour.

- We initiated a series of XTERRA Camps across the U.S. to help prepare athletes to race and get them startedtowards an active lifestyle. To that end, we offer up half-distance races for newcomers at our major events, plus thechance to race as part of a relay team. We also offer free XTERRA University clinics taught by our top pros.

- We dish out a half-million dollars in prize money to attract some of the world's leading multisport athletes and garnerthe attention of national and international media.

- We make champions. In the U.S. series alone we recognize 184 amateur regional champions and 22 amateurnational champions, plus relay team national champions.

- We get kids involved wherever we go with the XTERRA Kids Zone. It's a free schedule of events with running andbike races, obstacle courses, and other fun games. The notion is to get kids outdoors and active.

- We put the lifestyle on display for millions to see with XTERRA TV. A dozen shows reaching into homes all over theworld with inspiring images of fun activities in great places.

- We became consumer friendly. First with XTERRA Gear - equipment designed for rugged competition. Then, withraces in more than a dozen countries and nearly every state in the U.S., we knew traveling was part of the game sowe selected Travelocity to power XTERRA Travel on our website. We recently re-created XTERRAPlanet.com, whichis soon to be a complete resource for any outdoor adventure.

- With the introduction of the XTERRA Foundation - we gave XTERRA heart. The XTERRA Foundation is a non-profitspecifically designed to provide educational opportunities for at-risk kids.

- We've opened the doors for runners, not just multisport athletes, with the XTERRA Trail Run Series. This year thereare more than 30 5k and 10k fun runs reaching into 18 major metropolitan cities in America - providing more chancesto participate in the healthy, active, outdoors lifestyle.

- We took the XTERRA format into the snow with the creation of the XTERRA Winter World Championship to be heldat Snowbasin Resort and Ogden, Utah on March 8-9, 2008.

- We launced the XTERRA Green Team to protect and preserve the areas we race in, and give back to thecommunities that host us.

- The movement is growing rapidly, and also includes events like the Nevada Passage adventure competition.

IT REALLY STARTED in the late '80's. That's when TomKiely (CEO of TEAM Unlimited - owners and producers ofXTERRA) was tasked with creating more publicity for theWaikiki Oahu Visitors Association. His idea was sports TV."First, sports is part of our life blood in Hawaii, and second,

what looks good on TV? - The beaches and the ocean,"explained Kiely.

The concept was pretty simple. TV sports andentertainment is one of the biggest industries in the world. The travel industry is THE BIGGEST industry in the world.Bring those two together in programming, and you've gotsomething big.So he came up with the idea for the Hawaiian International

Ocean Challenge - a lifeguard skills competition thatattracted water safety specialists from Australia, NewZealand, California, and of course, Hawaii. Then, he forgeda relationship with ESPN - the worldwide leader in sports.

In 1990 the Ocean Challenge was broadcast on ESPN,and millions of viewers were exposed to the beauty ofWaikiki - the sun, sand, and crystal clear blue water of thePacific Ocean. Subsequently, this is where David "Kahuna"Nicholas enters the picture - as "race director."

"So we get into producing the Ocean Challenge," saysKiely. "And now I'm thinking I've got all these athletes andTV crews and if it costs me this much to produce one show,it'll cost less for another, and even less for a third."ESPN approves two more shows (Waikiki King's Race and

Diamond Head Wahine Windsurfing Classic) and in 1991TEAM Unlimited produces three events and three TVshows. The concept is working, and Hawaii is reaping thebenefits of the outdoor exposure the shows are generating.

"So the next year (1992) we produced seven HawaiianSports Adventure Shows…multiple segments, differentstories, great scenics, and 30-minutes of entertaining, goodfun stuff," said Kiely.

Those seven shows were in addition to the OceanChallenge and a few others televised events, including theinaugural Tour O' Hawaii.

"Now that was a great event," said Nicholas - now themanaging director of the XTERRA Global Tour. "The TourO' Hawaii happened before professional cyclists wereallowed to compete in the Olympics so the top riders fromevery country kept their amateur status so they could racein the Olympics. We just missed Lance because he signedwith Motorola, but we had George Hincapie, Jan Ulrich,Tyler Hamilton, and dozens of others. Looking back, the

field was a who's who of international cycling."A few years later the Olympics allowed pros to compete,

road cycling in the U.S. was on the decline, and the Tour O'Hawaii was no more. At the same time, however, mountainbiking was taking off. So in 1995, in addition to 12 other TVshows and several events, TEAM Unlimited produced theHawaiian Mountain Tour.

In doing so Nicholas and mountain bike Hall-of-FamerDean Crandall established the rules and held the first-evermountain bike stage race. This is also where many of theXTERRA greats first appeared. The likes of Ned Overend,Shari Kain, Melanie McQuaid, Steve Larsen, Mike Kloser,Leslie Tomlinson, and host of others were taking part in theHawaiian Mountain Tour. Now these races took place atKualoa Ranch on Oahu, where the Koolau mountain rangemeets the ocean, and the story goes that after their racesthe mountain bikers would ride down to the beach and jumpin the water. It sparked a thought…why not have amountain bike triathlon?

By 1996 TEAM Unlimited had produced more than 50shows and sporting events, and while the idea of an off-roadtriathlon was enticing - who'd pay for it?

Almost simultaneously, the Aston Hotel in Maui (now theWailea Marriott Resort) was shopping for a good idea fortheir grand opening and the Maui Visitors Bureau waslooking for a new event that could tell a different story aboutMaui's south shore because all the exposure up to that pointwas golf. Well, what better way to show off the hotel andsouth shore than 1) starting the race at this beautiful beachin front of the sponsor hotel, 2) follow a race that covers 21miles of terrain with two dozen camera's, and 3) put it on TVfor the whole world to see?

Add a phone call to Kiely from a friendly competitor in themarketplace (to remain unnamed) inquiring on the verysubject of producing an off-road triathlon and you have allthe main ingredients for XTERRA's birth.

Kiely likes to define luck as the "intersection of opportuni-ty and activity." He recalls bringing Nicholas and VP ofMarketing Janet Clark into his office.

"Look, I said, so-and-so called me and said that they werethinking about doing an off-road tri and if they do, then we'reforever second, so we have to be the first ones to do it. Iimmediately called Aston and the MVB and said O.K., I'vegot the idea, here's the thing, bing, bang, boom," said Kiely.

"And that's what got us started in XTERRA."
