Explanation of Safety Symbols 1.1

Operational Safety Notes 1.2

Before using the equipment, it is important that you read this manual thoroughly. MOTAN accepts no responsibility or liability for damage or malfunction of the equipment arising from non-observance of this operating instruction. These operating instructions should always be kept where they will be readily accessible.

The following safety signs are recommended and approved by the Safety Sign Development Committee of The Machinery Division of The Society of the Plastics Industry.

This symbol is used as an operational safety symbol for all work which involves a risk of life and limb for personnel. In such cases, particular care and caution must be exercised when carrying out work.

This symbol is used as an operational safety symbol for all work which involves risk of electrocution. For instance, this symbol can represent areas of high voltage where power should be disconnected in advance of any servicing.

This symbol is used as a warning of moving parts. Special attention should be taken so that hands or fingers are not caught in the equipment. It is

recommended that the operator ensure the guard is securely in place before operating the machine.

The Motan receiver’s are built to be operationally safe, but there are hazards that exist which operators and maintenance personnel should be aware of particularly during maintenance and/or repair work.

• Every person who is concerned with the assembly, installation, removal, operation, maintenance or repair of the equipment, should read the operating instructions in full. It is recommended that written confirmation of this be obtained in each case.

• The user must ensure all safety features are in perfect working condition before operating the equipment.

• The manufacturer shall provide no further guarantee as to the functionality and safety of the equipment if conversions or modifications to the equipment are performed by the user.

• Before repair work is started, the device should be disconnected from the electrical power supply, and compressed air supply.

• All pipework must be securely connected before starting up the equipment.• Local safety and accident prevention regulations shall apply under all circumstances

to the safe operation of the equipment.• Only the specified connection voltage should be applied to the unit. Any over or under

voltage condition could severely damage the equipment and could result in personal injury or death.

FUNCTION 2.0

Features 2.1

The function of a receiver is to:

• Separate plastic material from the air stream • Accumulate a specific quantity of separated material• Discharge material for processing

Motan receivers have a filterless design which eliminates the need for filter maintenance or replacement.

The standard vacuum receiver uses a refill proximity switch to signal the controller when material is needed. The basic receiver is connected to a single material line, however direct material proportioning, is also available.

Pneumatic valves operate the filling and discharge of the receiver.

All receivers function on the principle of a vacuum conveying material. A vacuum blower creates suction by pulling air and material through a set of tubing. A receiver is connected to the tubing at a point between the blower and material source. When the air and material reach the receiver, the material separates from the air and accumulates in the bottom of the receiver (2.1.1).

An material separation screen is provided to prevent overfilling of the receiver and assure consistent performance under varying operating conditions.

The inlet/outlet cover is removable for cleaning and can be rotated 360° for desired orientation.

The MetroVac models have a glass body for monitoring material flow and material level. The glass body allows the proximity switch to be positioned anywhere along the height of the glass.

There are four basic s ty les of receiver : Hopper Mount, Wall Mount, Machine Mount, and Slide Gate. Each s t y l e f u n c t i o n s differently to meet the specific requirements of the conveying system.

The basic difference between the four styles of receivers is manner of discharge.

The Hopper Mount r e c e i v e r s h a v e a discharge valve that operates with the sequence valve to fill and discharge the receiver.

The Wall Mount receivers operate in the same fashion as Hopper Mount receivers. These receivers include a mounting bracket, a discharge shroud and an optical sensor switch.

The Machine Mount receiver mounts directly to a machine's throat above the screw. There is no discharge valve on the Machine Mount receivers.

The Slide Gate receivers have a pneumatic slide gate that opens and closes dispensing material.

Hopper Mount Behavior The proximity switch is mounted to the surge hopper or the bin below the receiver and aimed into the material collection area. When the material level falls below the sensor, the sensor LED illuminates, and a fill cycle is initiated (2.3.1). During the fill time, the sequence valve (SV) on the receiver opens and the discharge valve ( D V ) c l o s e s ,

simultaneously. Material is then pulled into the receiver for a programmed amount of time (fill time). At the end of the fill cycle the SV closes and the DV opens, discharging the material from the receiver into the hopper. The receiver continues to cycle, fill and discharge, until the proximity senor LED is not illuminated due to the material level.

Wall Mount BehaviorThe Wall Mount receivers work in a similar fashion as the Hopper Mount receivers. The proximity sensor is replaced by a photo-eye and the receiver is mounted over a container. When the photo-eye senses that material has reached a certain level in the container, the fill cycle discontinues. Once material is removed or lowered the photo-eye illuminates and initiates a fill cycle.

Machine Mount BehaviorOn the Machine Mount receiver the proximity switch is located on the side of the receiver. The proximity switch on the Sliver Bullet models is stationary and adjustable on the MetroVac models. As the molding machine consumes material, the material level falls below the proximity switch sensor initiating a fill cycle. The fill time is programmed so that the receiver is filled to a point near the top of the receiver above the proximity switch keeping conveying and fill cycles to a minimum. Slide Gate BehaviorThe Slide Gate receivers work in the same manner as the Hopper Mount receivers. Two differences are the discharge valve on a Hopper Mount receiver is replaced by a slide gate and the slide gate operates independently of the sequence valve.

Motan receivers are wrapped and secured in durable boxes for shipping minimizing the risk of damage to the equipment. Despite these precautions damage does sometimes occur in transit. When the receiver arrives at your location inspect it for any damage that might have occurred during shipment. If any shipping damage is discovered, immediately contact Motan, Inc. or the freight company to file a claim.

As mentioned earlier, Motan receivers are manufactured with four distinct styles. Mounting the receiver to the equipment is dependant upon the style of the receiver being used.

Machine MountCompare the diameter of the machine opening to the diameter of the receiver discharge. The machine opening must be between Ø2” - Ø3” in diameter. If the machine opening is larger than the receiver discharge, the receiver can be mounted directly to the throat of the molding machine above the machine screw by following the base flange patterns. (3.2.1) for Silver Bullets and (3.2.2) for MetroVacs. There are some particular cases, however, that involve custom installation work:

If the machine opening is smaller than the receiver discharge (3.2.3a), it is necessary to use an adapter which will fit between the machine's throat and receiver's flange closing the gap without forming any ledges. Ledges obstruct material flow and can accumulate material, hindering cleanup during material changes. The installation of an adapter eliminates these ledges and provides a clean transition between the receiver and machine (3.2.3b). It is customary for the adapter to be fabricated by the customer.

When an adapter is required, it must be bolted to the machine first, and then the receiver and gasket may be bolted to the adapter.

In cases where a machine hopper is used, a Hopper Mount receiver will take the place of the Machine Mount receiver to load the molding machine. Installation procedures for Hopper Mount installations are listed below.

In some systems that mold parts requiring precise dimensioning, Compact Discs for example, the quantity of material discharged into the press must be regulated. Because the discharge valve in a Hopper Mount receiver is suspended below the mounting flange, it cannot be mounted to the machine throat and consequently cannot be used for this type of application. The Slide Gate receiver can be fixed to the machine in the same way as the Machine Mount receiver and be used for applications where accurate measurement of material is required.

Hopper, Slide Gate, and Wall MountHopper Mount, Slide Gate, and Wall Mount receivers are found in applications where discharge valves are necessary. The processes of each particular discharge style were discussed in detail earlier in the behavior section (2.3).

The flange pattern for the Hopper Mount receiver is much larger than that of the Machine Mount. Bolt holes in the hopper must be drilled according to the diagram (3.2.4). The mounting surface must be large enough for an 11" dia. flange clearance. A 9.25" dia. thru hole must also be cut.

Special Note: Discharge valve extends 11” below a receiver’s mounting flange.

to the valve cylinders. Compressed air requirements for all receiver valve cylinders are: 40-60 PSIG with a usage of 1 SCFM.

Diagram (3.3.1) illustrates a standard solenoid/junction box arrangement. The Machine Mount receiver will not have a discharge valve, so only the sequence valves need to be controlled by the solenoid (3.3.2). Hopper Mount and Wall Mount receivers have both valves actuating oppositely and simultaneously. Both valves are controlled by a single solenoid with "T" shaped air outlet fittings (3.3.3). Slide Gate receivers follow the air connection diagram (3.3.4).

Wiring connections must be made between each receiver and the main material handling controller. Each receiver is furnished with a 7-pole plug and 12-foot cord. The cord/plug serves as a means to disconnect the receiver from the controller while performing maintenance. Please refer to the main controller manual for specific connections to the main controller terminal strip. We recommend the use of #18 - #16 AWG wire/cable for all low voltage (120 VAC) field wiring within 100 feet of the control panel and #16 - #14 Awg wire/cable for longer distances to reduce possible voltage drop.

Connections to the material supply line and blower vacuum line must be made. It is recommend that flexible hose be used for both connections (minimum two foot length). Motan can provide the required flexible hose, for more information contact the Motan Sales Department (refer to Page 0.1, Contact Information).

Proximity Switch Adjustment 4.2

The purpose of this startup step is to insure that:• the sequence valve operates properly• no severe compressed air leaks exist in the receiver

Disconnect the flexible conveying hoses to both the material inlet tube and the vacuum tube. With compressed air at 40-60 PSIG, depress the manual actuation button on the receiver solenoid valve. Visually verify both plungers have retracted (4.1.1).

Before proceeding, turn on receiver through the control panel and verify system filter is actuated. Reconnect the vacuum hose to the sequence valve. Now energize the system vacuum blower (see blower manual for instructions). Again, depress the manual actuation button on the solenoid valve. Air flow should now be entering the receiver through the material inlet tube. Place your hand in front of the material inlet tube. A strong vacuum should be felt. Check for leaks around the receiver lid gasket and the discharge gasket. If a strong vacuum is verified, the receiver is ready for the next startup step. If improper performance of the sequence valve is detected, review compressed air connections (3.3).

Reconnect the material inlet flexible hose to the receiver and depress the solenoid valve actuation button. Material should flow into the receiver. (Receiver must be working though control panel and connected to material source.)

The proximity switch, used to check the material level in the body of the receiver, is mounted with the ability to slide the length of the sightglass (MetroVac only). See diagram (4.2.1a). To fix the proximity sensor's position, the mounting nuts on the prox mounting bracket are adjusted so that the sensor face is pressing gently against the sightglass wall (4.2.1b). This creates enough friction to keep the bracket from sliding.

the switch is not in place or needs replacement it should be set directly against the sightglass and tightened in place.

When the prox has been positioned at the desired level on the receiver or bin it is ready for the sensitivity to be adjusted. Make sure the power cord is connected to the receiver junction box. Located on the proximity switch body (4.2.2) is an adjustment screw and LED which illuminates whenever material is not present in front of the sensor. This LED stops illuminating when the prox "senses" material.

Turn the adjustment screw on the level switch counter-clockwise until the LED light illuminates. This adjustment may take 10 to 15 revolutions. If after 20 revolutions the LED fails to illuminate, verify the voltage across terminals #6 and #7 in the receiver junction box is between 110 and 120 VAC. If the proper voltage is verified and the LED does not illuminate, contact the Service Department at Motan for assistance (refer to Page 0.1, Contact Information).

Once the LED is lit, rotate the adjustment screw clockwise stopping when the LED goes out. Again, slowly turn the adjustment screw counter clockwise stopping when the LED illuminates (approx. 1/8"). The level switch is now tuned. The adjustment can be verified by holding a handful of plastic pellets, inside the sightglass against the switch's sensor. The LED should go out when it senses the material. Material is used to verify the sensitivity of the switch since each material will effect the switch differently.

A Wall Mount receiver has a sightly different sensor: a photo-eye (4.2.3). The photo-eye is adjusted in the same fashion as the proximity switch, but is adjusted to sense the height of material in a container. Place a solid object in the path of the photo-eye (example: clipboard). This object should be at the height at which the receiver should sense the material and shut down. Proceed to adjust the photo-eye in the same manner as a proximity switch.

The main material handling controller contains a specific fill timer for each receiver. This fill timer regulates the duration of the fill cycle for each receiver. All receiver fill timers are factory preset at 10 seconds. This fill timer should be adjusted so that the maximum amount of material is conveyed into the receiver during each fill cycle. This amount of material should match the capacity of the receiver. For example, the fill timer for the 2lb MetroVac should be adjusted so that approximately 2 pounds of material are conveyed into the receiver during each fill cycle. Detailed fill timer instructions are included in the Material Handling Controller manual, furnished with this system. This manual identifies the appropriate fill timer for each receiver.

OPTIONS 5.0

Material Proportioning 5.1

A proportioning valve can be installed on the material inlet tube to facilitate the introduction of two materials into the vacuum receiver during each fill sequence. The most common application for using a proportioning valve involves combining rough proportions of regrind material with virgin material (5.1.1). See Conveying Controller Manual for setting material proportions.

During the normal filling sequence, the solenoid valve on the proportioning valve is electrically actuated from the main controller (or in some cases, by a timer box mounted to the valve). This solenoid valve then powers the proportioning valve cylinders between the "virgin" and "regrind" inlet tubes.

The proportioning valve is shipped separately from the receiver and must be installed on the receiver. Installation consists of:

• mounting the valve on the material inlet tube• connecting the valve to the compressed air supply• wiring the valve's solenoid to the receiver junction box

Detailed installation instructions are provided in Appendix A of this manual.

A material proportioning valve can also be used to facilitate purging of the material line.

During the receiver’s fill cycle the main controller closes the material inlet tube on the proportioning valve and opens the air inlet tube. Ambient air is drawn into the proportioning valve forcing the remaining material from the material line into the receiver (5.2.1). A filter is placed on the end of the air inlet tube to keep from contaminating the material.

Although material purging can be achieved by use of a proportioning valve, as described above, Motan

systems generally purge material by use of a SBD (Suction Box Dry air conveying) option.

APPENDIX A

Proportioning Valve Installation A.1

Before installing the proportioning valve make sure all electrical and compressed air connections to the Motan receiver are disconnected.

Product ConnectionMount the proportioning valve by placing the supplied coupling over the material inlet tube of the receiver and inserting the material outlet tube of the proportioning valve into the coupling (A.1.1).

Electrical ConnectionOnce the coupling has been secured to the receiver and valve, the valve solenoid must be wired to the receiver junction box termnials. Locate the receiver junction box and remove the hole plug on the top of the box. Replace the plug with the cable grip, supplied with the

proportioning valve. Insert the cable from the valve solenoid into the cable grip. Strip the wire to expose the red, white, and green wires. The red, white, and green wires should be stripped to connect them to the junction box. Connect the red wire to terminal #3, the white wire to terminal #4, and the green wire to terminal # 8 (A.1.2). Tighten the cable grip.

Compressed Air ConnectionThe valve solenoid must be connected to a compressed air source. Two options exist for suppling air to the valve solenoid. The first option is a shared connection with the receiver’s compressed air source. A second option is the use of an air source separate from the receiver’s source. Three feet of compressed air tubing is provided with the proportioning valve to connect the valve to the receiver.

Disconnect the compressed air supply from the receiver. Remove and replace the “elbow” fitting from the solenoid on the junction box with the “tee” fitting supplied with the proportioning valve (A.1.3). Check all compressed air connections to be sure all are secure. A scematic detailing the proper tubing connections for the proportioning valve to the junction box solenoid is provided in (A.1.4).

If using a separate compressed air supply for the proportioning valve, set pressure between 40 and 60 PSIG. CAUTION: Compressed air pressure above 60 PSIG can result in premature plunger wear.

Connect the upper material inlet to the virgin material supply and the lower material inlet to the regrind material supply (A.2.3). The use of two to three feet of flexible hose is recommended for these connections.

Operation A.2

Virgin and regrind fill time must be set according to the instructions in the main material handling control manual.

With compressed air connected to the proportioning valve, check the position of the valve plungers. The plungers should be positioned as shown in (A.2.1). Depress the manual actuation button on the valve solenoid. The valve plungers should actuate, switching position (A.2.2). Inspect the position of the sealing plunger in both states to

insure the plungers completely seal the inlet tubes.

Program the receiver for a fill cycle as instructed in the main material handling control manual. As the proportioning valve actuates between the virgin and regrind positions, place your hand in front of the inlets. A strong vacuum should be felt in each position. There

should not be any air flow detected from the sealed inlet tube at each position.
