Since its start in 1951, PIAB has been at theforefront in vacuum technology. Our products andsystems continuously open up new paths to newpossibilities. The products increase the productivity in automated material handling and productionprocesses in most of the world’s countries.

The first PIAB product was a pair ofcompasses that simplified the work ofdesigners and draftsmen. This pair ofcompasses has given the company itsname. Pi (=3.14) AB.

PIAB offers you all the possibilities

In 1972 PIAB introduced thepatented multistage ejector thatstill is the guiding-star for manycompanies in the industry.

PIAB’s latest patent: TheCOAX™ technology – a furtherdevelopment of the multistage ejectorprinciple that offers new possibilities ofcustomization and integration.

The PIAB mission is to be a global leader in industrialvacuum technology and, with innovative solutions, improve the productivity and working environment of vacuum users around the world.

The first USDA accepted pneumaticvacuum conveyor was launched in theyear 2000. The conveyor meets therequirements of the food industry.

PIAB vacuum conveying increases your productivity

SafetyWhen noxious materials cannot be allowed to leak out into theenvironment of production. When the material that is conveyed issensitive and cannot withstand external effects. That is when youchoose PIAB.

The whole chain of conveying takes place in a closed system, and therefore there is no leakage of dust. Besides this, theoperators are not subjected to heavy lifting but can enjoy workingin a noise-free environment.

A favourable working environment contributes to increasedproductivity.

Simplicity We build our conveyors so that they simplify your work. They areeasy to disassemble and assemble when cleaning them. They haveno crevices or pockets where powder can accumulate. The surfacesare easy to visually inspect.

Quick inspection and cleaning increases your productivity.

Reliability The vacuum conveyor has few moving parts. It is only the bottomflap that opens for emptying of powder. The vacuum pump has nomoving parts at all. And through this the need of service and spareparts is minimal and the operational reliability maximum.

Low costs for service and spare parts increase your productivity.

Economy Faster conveying with higher capacity and, at the same time, lowerenergy consumption. That is the result of PIAB’s developmentwork. By using PIAB’s vacuum conveyors you can lower your energycosts even further.

Low energy consumption leads to increased productivity.

Operational reliability The conveyors are designed to last. There is a built-in quality that guarantees long and problem-free operation. The risk for a stoppage in your production is non-existent.

High reliability without unnecessary production stoppagesincreases your productivity.

Efficiency We have made comparisons with traditional compressed air-driven vacuumconveyors. The result shows that PIAB’s new conveyors, C21, C33 and C56,display a strongly increased capacity at the same level of energy consumption. When conveying wheat flour, for example, the capacity was increased byapproximately 20–40 per cent.

Faster conveying of larger volumes increases your productivity.

HygieneUSDA and 3-A are the finest proofs of quality that you can expect to obtain. This proof is attached to a series of PIAB’s vacuumconveyors. USDA and 3-A have extremely stringent hygienicrequirements of process equipment used in the food industry.(Please read more about it on page 18 in this brochure.)

PIAB’s equipment has first-rate hygieniccharacteristics.

QualityPIAB meets the stringent requirements of the food and pharmaceuticalindustries by making it possible for our customers to build the quality intotheir manufacturing process instead of strictly checking the end-product.

Thinking of quality from start to goal increases your productivity.

Increase your productivity

The principle of PIABVacuum Conveying is as simple as it is ingenious

1. Vacuum is created by a compres-sed air-driven PIAB vacuum pump. (A) The pump has no rotating parts,is easy to control and thus needs no maintenance.

2. The bottom valve (B) closes, and under-pressure is created in thepowder container (C) and in theconveying pipeline (D).

3. From the feeding point (E) thepowder is conveyed through theconveying pipeline to the powdercontainer.

4. The filter (F) prevents dust and fine particles from passing through to the pump and further out into the atmosphere.

5. When the powder is conveyed, theshock tanks (G) are charged withcompressed air.

6. The pump is turned off when thedesired volume of powder has beenachieved. The bottom valve opensand the container is emptied. At thesame time the compressed air in theshock tanks is released to clean thefilter of particles that have stuck to it.

7. When the pump starts again, thiscycle is repeated. Suction and empty-ing times are normally controlled withpneumatic or electrical controlsystems (H).

Systemize your conveying needs

Material: From our test facility we have gainedknowledge as to how most powders behave.

Bulk density: The most usual density is between 0.5–1.8 kg/l. At extremely low bulk density,<0.5 kg/l, one has to pay attention to the fact thatonly a few kilograms may constitute quite a volume. At extremely high bulk density, >1.8 kg/l, it may bedifficult to convey the powder in a vertical direction. In such cases a high airflow and a deep vacuum level are required.

Particles: Weight, size, distribution, shape andhardness influence the manner of conveying. Thesize of the particles is also decisive as to what typeof filter that is required.

Fluidity: A powder may be free flowing, bridge build-ing or adhesive. Certain powders need additional airto be conveyed. Some powders are simply notsuitable for vacuum conveying.

Other material characteristics: There are manycharacteristics that need to be considered. A powdermay be hygroscopic, abrasive, static, dusty, explosive, combustible, poisonous or aggressive in variousways.

PIAB pays attention to your product’s characteristics

There are many parameters that influence a vacuumconveying system. Each conveying application isunique, and therefore we always have to consideryour specific requirements. There are, however, somegeneral principles that apply to the system design.

For economic efficiency: Adaptthe size of the conveyor to thepurpose.

For lowest system andoperational cost: Try to makethe conveying distance as shortas possible, and keep thenumber of pipe bends to aminimum.

For lowest energy consumption: Use pipes andavoid routing the conveying pipeline diagonally in thevertical plane.

PIAB shows you the way to theoptimum system design

Page 10: Vacuum Conveying

10

A complete vacuum conveyor can be ordered as astandard conveyor or as a combination of eachseparate unit. You can choose among thousands ofcombinations in order to get the most customer-adapted solution. PIAB’s vacuum conveyors consistof a number of basic units.

Pump: The efficiency of the vacuum pump is directlyrelated to the capacity required by the application.

Filter: The characteristics of the powder togetherwith the vacuum flow of the pump decide the type offilter that is suitable.

Connection: The conveyor is connected to thepipeline system via the powder inlet.

Bottom valve: This valve takes care of emptying andis located above the vessel into which the powder isto be emptied.

Control: Your application decides the type of control, whether it should be pneumatic, have its own controlsystem, etc.

Surrounding parameters to keep in mind

How does the powder react to the surroundingenvironment? Consider all parameters such ashumidity of the air, humidity of the powder, temperature of the conveyor and at the feedingpoint, temperature of the powder, indoors oroutdoors.

PIAB’s equipment is adaptable to your applications

Page 11: Vacuum Conveying

11

Operational parameters to keep in mind

PIAB will be glad to help you achieve your capacity goals. We willcalculate the correct size of the pump, the vacuum level duringconveying, suction times and emptying times, and the optimumsetting of the additional air that is introduced at the feedingpoint.

Piping system: Pipes have lower friction (faster conveying)than hoses and should be used in all stationary installa-

tions. To think of: Total conveyingdistance, vertical distance, numberof pipe bends, diameter, whether youare using steel pipes, vacuum hosesor a combination of these, type of

connections between the pipes.

Feeding point: The surrounding air is the carrier of the powder and should be

added at the feeding point. Is the powder to be conveyeddirectly from a container? Is it to be “sucked” from a high or low place?

Accessories: Does the surrounding air need to befiltered? Does air need to be added at more places thanat the feeding point? If the conveying distance is verti-cally high, the pipeline should be completely emptiedbetween each batch. In this way you can prevent thepowder from forming into “plugs” at the lower part of the vertical pipeline.
