the personal stories behind these prisoner of war hostels
Rowville Army CampIn 1944 the American troops moved out of the camp and in December 1944 the Rowville hostel was established with one hundred Italian prisoners of war, one officer and seven other ranks. The number of prisoners was increased to one hundred and fifty in January 1945. Although there was no increase in the number of military staff, later that year the number of prisoners grew to approximately three hundred. The role of the camp was changed to that of a staging camp on 5th June 1945, with an increase in military staff which consisted of one officer and fifteen other ranks. This meant that all prisoners being moved from centre to centre around Victoria were dispatched through the Camp at Rowville. Prisoners were kept until there was sufficient justification for them to be sent to other camps around the State and used as farm labourers. According to the Australian Archives, Italian prisoners of war were also used on military works at salvage depots, Fisherman’s Bend, the Engineers Depot at Oakleigh and the Military Camp at Watsonia.[1] Altogether a total of two thousand six hundred prisoners of war passed through the Rowville Camp until the government inquiry in 1946.
The Rowville Camp was a very low security area in semi-rural uncleared land. Around the perimeter was an ordinary wire fence, a little over a metre high, capable of keeping grazing cattle out rather than prisoners in. The camp had no sentries on the gates and there was nothing to stop an ordinary individual getting in or out, either by jumping over or crawling under the wire fence or just walking through the unguarded entrances of which there were four off Stud Road and one off Wellington Road.[2]

Meet some of the ItaliansMeet some of the Italian prisoners of war who worked and lived within the hostels of V22 Oakleigh and Rowville; V30 Balcombe
• Rowville Oakleigh V22 PWC Hostel, Number of Italians: 200; Operated: Dec 44 Dec 46, Work: General duties at Army Workshop and Park Coy Engineering Dumps etc
• Balcombe V30 PWC Hostel Number of Italians:150, Operated May 46 Dec 46 Work: Removal and re-erection Army huts, maintenance etc
In 1945 and1946, Australian army military camps and facilities needed to be prepared for ‘shut down’. Machinery needed servicing and maintenance, grounds need to be revitalised, equipment needed to be registered or moved egammunition, barbed wire on coastal installations needed to be removed. Italian prisoners of war were sent to numerous army camps to assist with these tasks. Hostels were approved. At the same time, the Italians were being removed from farms, but shipping was not available for repatriation of the men. Keeping the Italians occupied was a key concern, but this could not stop those Italians who wanted to remain in Australia from escaping.

How unlucky was Gennaro?
Gennaro was certainly clever and
resilient. He had accumulated Australia
currency. He assumed the identity of a
Greek migrant, purchased a first class
train ticket from Melbourne to Adelaide
and was ready to leave Australia by boat
for Italy.
Gennaro had to have assistance for
Australians for he had an identity card
and clothing coupons.

Antonio Soldano
He is one of my Queensland Italian POWs. He was sent to work on Nambour farms: SJ Collingwood Landsborough and EG Gibbons Forest Glen.
He was sent to V22 Rowville on 10.10.45
He left Rowville on 21.3.46
Antonio returned to Australia. He died in Australia February 1985.
It seems Antonio arrived in Australia in 1954 and his wife Margherita arrived in December 1955. They settled in South Australia. At the time of Margherita’s naturalisation in 1964, she was living at 4 Claremont Street Mile End. Their son Gabriele was naturalised in 1962.
Gaetano Prochilo
Gaetano arrived in Australia on the Queen Mary 13.10.41. He spent time at Corwa and Hay PW Camps and was sent to South Australia: Cook Detachment to work on railway maintenance. He returned to Hay, was sent to Murchison then V3 Wakool Hostel and then went to work on farm/s in the V7 Yarram district. A fractured ulna saw him hospitalised at Yarram Hospital.
Gaetano arrived at V22 Oakleigh 20.12.44
He left Oakleigh on 6.4.45 for 28 days detention at Murchison.
There is an extra file in the archives for Gaetano.
In 1948 he applied to come to Australia. He had a brother in law in New South Wales, cousins in Adelaide and Melbourne (see screen shot below).
And he had a disagreement with Captain Waterston. (see screen shot below)
His brother in law Mr Buda applied for him to stay in Australia and give him a job (see below)
He is in the photo below BUT photos taken at Hay do not identify which name is which man.
