Introductionby The Rt. Hon. Lord Butler of Brockwell KG, Hon. Life Chairman of Vincent’s Club

I remember vividly the pride and humility I felt when I was elected to Vincent’s. It

happened at the beginning of my second year. I was familiar with the Club’s famous tie and I

knew that the leading figures in all areas of the University’s sport were members. I also knew

that the many world-class sportsmen Oxford had produced over the years - household names

to me - were proud to be members of its elite fraternity. I felt that I was being admitted to a

humble place among the gods.

To that original pride was added lifelong pleasure as those whom I regarded as outstanding

members of my generation became my friends. Many of those friendships have lasted

throughout my life and have been a source of great happiness to me. Some of those friendships

I would have made anyway through my College and my sport, but a great many others I

would not have made without my membership of Vincent’s.

It is a great thing that the Club has survived for 150 years. We have much to celebrate in

this anniversary year but I feel that we also have an obligation to make our contribution to

securing the future of this great Club of which we have the privilege to be members. I wish

every success to those who are working hard for that objective, and thank all who have made

their contribution.

Yours sincerely,

Robin Butler

VINCENTSCLUB

The 150th anniversary yearby Melville Guest, Chairman V150

Dear Fellow Club Members,

Much effort has been devoted to the compilation of this new register of all members of the

Club who were alive in 2013. Together with the Club’s new Database and interactive Website, it

represents V150’s contribution to sustaining W B Woodgate’s vision of lifelong membership of

Vincent’s. The Register and the Database are live on the Website, so can easily be kept up-to-

date, making it much easier for the Club to keep in touch with members and for members to

keep in touch with each other.

2012/2013 saw Vincent’s celebrate one of the great Oxford anniversaries. It has been marked

by more than twenty events of many kinds across the globe and brought together members

who have not seen each other since they were students, as well as best friends for life. In an

evolving environment for university sport it also reminded us of the future challenges which

both the Club and University sport face. Vincent’s and its members have an important role to

play in meeting them.

Finally, I should like to salute all those who have contributed to the many reforms which

have been introduced over the last two years in the governance and management of the Club.

When the refurbished premises are reopened on the 6th May 2014 by Sir Roger Bannister,

Vincent’s will be a Club fit for the 21st Century but with enduring 19th Century values.

Many members have contributed generously to make all this possible. They have given

Vincent’s a secure future and they deserve our great gratitude.

Vincent’s Club is building reciprocal relationships with many clubs around the world.

Typically this allows Vincent’s members some use of the club facilities. However, members are

advised to be in touch with the clubs in advance as some will require advance notice of visits.

Normal protocol would be to telephone ahead to enquire about using the club, some may then

require written proof of membership, which can be obtained from the current secretary:

[email protected]

We are always looking to expand our network of reciprocal clubs, so if you have any contacts

at a suitable club, please be in touch with the Bursar: [email protected]
