PROJECT SPECIFICATION• Self-weathering and galvanized steel monopoles will

be installed along the project route. Structures will range from 75 feet to 130 feet in height, with taller poles being located at Interstate 10 and railroad crossings.

• Vegetation removal will be in accordance with ADOT standards. Existing roads and cleared right-of-way areas will be used for equipment access during construction. No road grading is proposed for the project.

CONSTRUCTION SCHEDULE• Project to be constructed and operational before

Summer 2014. • Vegetation removal along Interstate 10 frontage roads

will be completed by the end of 2013. • Installation of pole foundations will follow vegetation

removal and will be completed by the end of 2013.• Installation of poles will begin in 2013 and will be

completed by Summer 2014.• Wire stringing between poles will follow installation of

poles and be completed by Summer 2014.• Construction will accommodate the Tucson Gem and

MineralShow in order to limit traffic congestionandmaintain access to gem show vendors.

• Replanting and restoration will begin following completion of line construction and will be completed by end of 2014.

This newsletter is intended to provide updated information to residents of this project’s previous study area and to developers with interests within one mile of the project.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION• Tucson Electric Power (TEP) is planning to build a

new 138 kilovolt (kV) transmission line and relocate an existing 46kV transmission line to link the DeMoss Petrie (DMP) Substation near Interstate 10 and West Grant Road to the Tucson Substation near West 5th Street and North 11th Avenue. The new line will add transmission capability between these substations, increasing electrical system reliability throughout Tucson.

PURPOSE AND HISTORY• The purpose of the project is to construct the facilities

necessary to provide additional transmission capability between the DMP and Tucson substations. In particular, the new line will provide additional capacity for TEP substations on Tucson’s west side in order to meet future expected electrical load growth in the city and to help reduce the frequency and duration of electrical service outages.

• TEP received approval to build the transmission line from the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) in March 2011. As part of the approval process, TEP conducted extensive natural, cultural and visual resource studies. Additionally, TEP mailed out numerous newsletters to thousands of landowners and residents in the project area, held public open houses and attended meetings with a Community Working Group that included neighborhood residents, jurisdictional representatives, and other stakeholders.

• Based on considerable public involvement, the ACC approved construction of the project along a route supported not only by TEP, but also by area residents who participated in the planning process.

LOCATION• The new transmission line is approximately 2.4 miles

in length and follows a route that starts at the DMP Substation, located near the northeast corner of Interstate 10 and West Grant Road, and terminates at the Tucson Substation, located at the intersection of West 5th Street and North 11th Avenue. Generally, the line traverses private property on its northern segment, Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) right-of-way on its middle segment and City of Tucson right-of-way on its southern segment.

Steel monopoles like the one depicted here will be installed along the project route.
