Nick Schnebelen grew up with parents who played music full time in the Kansas City Blues scene. In 1997, he moved to Philadelphia to experience music on a larger scale and started his own band. K-Floor quickly became one of Philly’s favorite early 2000’s Blues/Jam bands known for their high energy funk/ blues. His music thrived with K-Floor for the next five years until he had an opportunity to get back to his family and roots.

In 2004, his siblings, Danielle and Kris, left Kansas City and moved up to Philadelphia to form the family blues power trio “Trampled Under Foot”. For the next year and a half the trio travelled between the two cities until they returned to KC and cultivated a large fan base in the Midwest.

In 2008, Trampled Under Foot won the International Blues Competition and Nick won the prestigious Albert King Award for “Best Guitarist”. This propelled TUF to begin touring and recording in Los Angeles with Tony Brauna-gel. Tony produced two records for TUF, “Wrong Side of the Blues”, and “Badlands”, which debuted #1 on Billboard and won “Best Contemporary Blues Album of the Year” at the Blues Music Awards in 2014. Ending the band on a high note, Trampled Under Foot decided to stop performing sole-ly as a group and now intends to have a select few reunion shows in 2016.

During his years with TUF, Nick worked up a unique one man band performance which allowed for a mellow yet exciting set change. The simplicity of the kick drum and high hat worked together with just one guitar and helped to create an old school blues sound. He began to use a va-

riety of guitars such as elec-tric, acoustic, Dobro, cigar box guitar, and lap steel to mix up his show.

Nick formed the Nick Schne-belen Band in early 2015, with Nick on guitar and vo-cals, Heather Newman on guitar and vocals, Joe Voye on Drums, and Cliff Moore on Bass. The Nick Schnebelen band plays a variety of blues and roots music styles and with two strong front vocal-ists, NSB hits classic electric

blues, dirty stomp blues, funk and jazz. Nick continues to feature many different types of guitars during his shows to vary tones. Often during the middle of a set, Nick heads behind the kick drum and high hat with a guitar in hand while Heather Newman grabs her acoustic guitar for a short rootsy breakdown.

Heather Newman has been singing all her life and has been a force of nature since she was young. When she was 11 years old she joined the BluesEd program in Omaha as a singer, where she had amazing opportunities to open for and play with many great national blues artists such as Toni Lynn Washington, Sonny Landreth, Anthony Gomes, Corky Segal, Curtis Salgado as well as many others. With the help of the Blues Society of Omaha and BluesEd, she performed at venues such as The Playing with Fire Concert Series at Lewis and Clark Landing, The Holland Perform-ing Arts Center Auditorium as well as Holland’s 1200 Club winter series. Today, she is living in Kansas City and tour-ing with the Nick Schnebelen Band.

What’s New with BluesEd?

BluesEd, the Blues Society of Omaha’s youth performance program, is gearing up for our 15th Season. In honor of our 15th year we have a special logo highlighting the length of time BluesEd has been wowing audiences.

We are in the process of registering stu-dents for auditions to be held in February. Vocalists and instrumentalists that are pro-ficient in their instrument and are ready to perform in a band are requested to register on our website: www.BluesEd.com. 2016 promises to be packed with performance opportunities for our bands at many great area venues.

Auditions will be held Feb. 21. Audition reg-istrations close Feb. 18.

Why is BluesEd different than other youth development programs?

1) BluesEd started in 2001, making it the oldest (and most experienced) of its kind in Omaha.

2) We have four clinicians who work with each band and are working, well-known musicians in the Omaha/Midwest region.

3) We have 5-6 performance bands a sea-son. Our season runs from April - August, not just a couple of weeks in the summer.

4) Our bands play at multiple venues and multiple times during the season. Not just one season ending performance.

5) The Blues Society of Omaha is our spon-sor and provides financial, educational and moral support to our bands.

6) Tuition for BluesEd is nominal and in-cludes professional instruction, perfor-mance opportunities and much more.

7) Some of our former students have gone on to work professionally in the music industry

8) Some of our bands have gone on to perform at the Inter-national Blues Challenge including our own Voodoo Vinyl this year!

9) Our bands have performed at the nationally acclaimed Playing With Fire Concert - Omaha series every summer.

10) Many national touring blues groups have worked with our students including: Rick Vito, Ben Poole, Peter Karp, Sue Foley and more!

We would like to hear from all of our Alumni as we cele-brate our 15th year. We hope to have a reunion this spring or summer and would like BluesEd alumni (and alumni parents too!) contact us so we have your current email ad-dress. Please send us an email at [email protected].

Kansas City-based, internationally acclaimed Roots, Blues and Americana singer songwriter Kelley Hunt will kick off Valentine’s weekend by returning to Omaha for a show Thursday, February 11th at 6pm at The 21st Saloon.

Kelley Hunt will arrive in Omaha having just stepped off the ship a few weeks earlier from her 4th featured appearance on the Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise and still rid-ing a wave of accolades for her 6th release “The Beautiful Bones” which launched in mid-2014 and has been univer-sally hailed by press, radio and fans on both sides of the Atlantic as the best work of her career. “If there truly is a Higher Power, one should press Play on the latest release by Kansas City’s Kelley Hunt. Rest assured that the takeaway will be, despite how everything’s been going lately, every-

thing’s going to be okay after all.” said Blues Music Mag-azine; “Kelley Hunt soars on her new release and invites listeners along for the ride.” said Cashbox; “It is not very often that we receive an al-bum that makes us sit down and really listen; like, grabs us and demands our full at-tention. Multi-instrumental-ist Kelley Hunt has done just that with her new album, ‘The Beautiful Bones’. This album has depth, soul, per-sonality, and nuance. (It) will definitely lift your spirits and make you smile, on the inside.” American Blues Scene; “a beautiful work of art…It is an album you will want to hear over and over discovering something new each time.” add-ed Tumblr. And The Seattle Times proclaimed her “One of the best songwriters of the genre” in an earlier review.

Hunt’s music has been described as a gumbo of roots music styles influenced by blues, roots R&B, gospel, soul, the pi-ano vernaculars of Kansas City, St. Louis and New Orleans - all framed by her unique identity as a songwriter, crossing roots boundaries and at times taking on social and political issues. It’s all delivered with superior skills as a singer and keyboardist. She has a simpler take, however. “All the stuff I grew up listening to - things my parents and siblings turned me onto and things I sought out and connected with - it all just went in the way it went in and comes out the way it comes out. It’s an organic process for me. Sometimes a song or song idea bubbles to the surface seemingly on its own and I have no idea why, I just run with it,” said Hunt. In addition to a list of favorite traditional artists, Hunt cites as a young girl hearing the sound of her mother’s and grand-mother’s voices (both jazz/gospel singers, her grandmother having toured with a gospel choir out of New Orleans for a while) among her most powerful influences. There were also pivotal piano lessons at age 10 from former Vaudeville / boogie woogie specialist Mary Burke Norton in Emporia, KS where the family lived at the time. According to Hunt, Norton was a big-hearted, eminently talented caricature - bright red wig, cigarette often dangling from her mouth, gravelly voice and an eye for talent, who celebrated Hunt’s early ability to play by ear, built on it, taught her boogie-woogie and how to read music. “She was my musical angel and, man, did she have an attitude,” said Hunt. “But thank God for her - she made me the piano player I am today,” she added. Kelley Hunt’s career comprises 6 critically acclaimed releases, hundreds of thousands of indie units sold, a long list of appearances on some of the most significant roots/blues and pan-genre festival stages in North America and Europe, song placements in major studio and indie feature films and much more. The show is presented by Rick Am-brose Productions.

Studebaker John was born in Chicago, and has lived his whole life there. An avid music fan as a youngster, he learned to play several instru-ments, including first the harmonica, then the drums, and in his late teens, the guitar. He came of age in the ‘60s, so was part of the rock ‘n’ roll/rock generation. It was a time when musi-cal boundaries and barriers were being broken down, and elements of different styles were combined into something new and vibrant that filled the airwaves of AM radio. John liked a lot of different music, but as a young teenager he’d occasionally hear songs that especially captured his attention and imagi-nation. “At the time, I had no idea that this music was called blues, but listening to the radio, you’d hear Jimmy Reed, Freddy King, Slim Harpo, and things like that, all mixed in with other music I listened to.” A few years later, that in-cluded the music of the Yardbirds, the Rolling Stones, and Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac in England, and in the USA, Bob Dylan, Paul Butterfield, Mike Bloomfield, Johnny Winter, the Allman Brothers, ZZ Top, and countless others, all of whom took their inspiration from Chicago’s electric blues, and add-ed a hard rocking edge to it.

Also during the ‘60s, John was traveling the city; working in his family’s plumbing business, which sometimes took him to the Maxwell Street open air market, where he heard street musicians playing a raw electrified blues for tips. “I got to see Big John Wrencher, the one-armed harp player who was a Maxwell Street regular and played with just a guitarist and drummer. I was spellbound. His mu-sic was simple yet so powerful.” The music he heard on Maxwell Street drew him in, and he started hanging out at clubs on the South and West Side to catch live acts. One memorable night he saw a performance by Hound Dog Taylor that resulted in a per-sonal epiphany: “I had to play slide guitar.”

Over the next couple of decades, John played every chance he got, sometimes sitting in with the cream of Chicago blues players, such as Big Walter, Jimmy John-son, Buddy and Phil Guy, James Cotton, Jr. Wells and Hound Dog Taylor. He built a reputation as a performer with an ex-citing, propulsive guitar style, and also developed into a fine blues harpist and vocalist. He became a sought-after side-man and session musician. For example, when the remnants of The Yardbirds and the Pretty Things came to Chicago in the early ‘90s looking to make a blues album, they tapped John to provide guitar and harp backing. Shortly thereafter, he was asked to join the reformed Yardbirds, an offer John tuned down in order to record his own music. He realized that he want-ed to stop playing cover versions of oth-

ers’ music, and to develop his own voice as a songwriter. “Writing songs is the most satisfying part of my job. I write a song to make myself feel better, and I hope it makes others feel bet-ter, too.” Since then he has put out more than a dozen albums of all original music, recording on the Blind Pig, Evidence, and his own Avanti labels. It is fitting that Studebaker John is now with Delmark, the oldest existing Chicago-based blues label. He is a Chicago blues original, who plays from the heart and always takes his own

distinctive approach to contemporary blues.

“On my last CD, Maxwell Street Kings, I wanted to capture the raw, less-is-more sound that I first heard on Chicago’s Maxwell St. My new CD, Old School Rockin’, is rockin’ blues that helps people to forget their troubles. I’ve tried to incor-porate the raw blues sound into songs that strive to be more contemporary and without musical boundaries. It’s what that sound turned into in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, when the raw blues heavily influenced many contemporary artists, and changed the course of popular music. Old School Rockin’ is for all the people, from the rocking blues crowd to the purists, and from the young folks just getting into it to those who’ve been listening all along. Michael Dixon

Dixon is the former Director of Blues and Roots Music for WRBC, Bates College, and a contributor to blues guides and publications.

Randy McAllister is one of the pre-mier singer, songwriter, and multi-in-strumentalists to emerge from Texas. Heartbreak, humor, high hair and tall Texas tales all play a part in the song writing of Randy McAllister. His music has been hailed as some of the most original and innovative being made to-day. While comparisons are not easy, it has been said that his music is a cross between Doug Sahm, John Hiatt and Delbert McClinton, with a blues man’s background and sensibilities thrown into the mix.

Raised in the small Texas town of Novice, McAllister is a fifth-generation Texan, whose father was both a fireman and musician. His father was a drummer in a band called “The Flames”. At a very young age, Randy followed in his father’s foots steps. He began to take up drumming, but the drums were just the beginning for Randy, as he began to develop as a singer and songwriter.

If Mark Twain had envisioned a 21st century roots musician, he might have created a character like Randy McAllister, with an easy-going persona and a wry, and an observant wit. McAllister weaves material in the singer/songwriter tradition, with nods to a variety of styles. He is one of those rare artists who is able to meld genres such as gospel, blues,

country, Tex-Mex, rock and zydeco to-gether and come away with something that is uniquely him.

In performance, his songs combine an uncontainable energy and intensi-ty with lyrics that dig into the tough topics. From urban violence, homeless-ness and other harsh realities to more common concerns like love and dat-ing, McAllister’s songwriting approach is particularly skillful, able to be both truthful and funny. McAllister takes

universal feelings and translates them into today’s reality, with his own pointed style expressed through his distinc-tive, soulful voice.”

McAllister has released 10 critically praised albums begin-ning with his debut “Diggin’ for Sofa Change”, followed by “Grease, Grit, Dirt and Spit”, the much heralded “Double Rectified Bust Head”, 2002 Grammy Nominee “Givers and Takers”, “Temporary Fixes” and A “Little Left of Center” all built on a firm foundation that is his songwriting. His much anticipated Compilation CD, “Flying High While Staying Low Down” was released in late 2006, “Dope Slap Soup” in 2008. “Ain’t Like the Movies” in 2009 and “Be Like Water” in 2011.

On January 17, 2016, an enthusiastic and dazzling crowd gathered at the downtown DoubleTree for the 10th Annual Omaha Entertainment & Arts Awards cer-emony. The evening celebrated the 2015 best of Oma-ha’s live music, performing arts, and visual arts. The Hector Anchondo Band took the stage for a rousing performance before later being announced as winner of the 2015 Best Blues trophy. This was Hector An-chondo Band’s third triumph in the Best Blues catego-ry following wins also in 2014 and 2013.

Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal snagged the 2015 OEAA prize for Best R&B/Soul, an award the band claimed for the third time after also besting as Josh Hoyer and the Shadowboxers

in 2014 & 2013; and the band’s release, “Josh Hoyer and the Shadowboxers”, had been selected as Album of the Year in 2014.

Josh Hoyer then returned to the podium to take a turn as a presenter. Josh announced the OEAA’s recognition of B.J. Huchtemann with a Music Lifetime Achieve-ment award. B.J. was totally surprised by this covertly planned honor, she was feted with a standing ovation from the crowd, and she was overwhelmed as she and the audience watched a series of video tributes from

peers describing the impact of B.J.’s many contributions to the music community. It was an unquestionably stellar night!

Grammy-nominated recording artists Dave Alvin and Phil Al-vin continue to make up for lost time on the road with a “red-hot rendition of their distinctive brew of American music” (Boston Globe). A seven-date west coast acoustic run begin-ning January 22, will feature a two-night stint at the famed McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, CA, before the brothers resume a full band tour in mid February.

The follow up to Common Ground: Dave Alvin + Phil Alvin Play and Sing The Songs Of Big Bill Broonzy, their first album together in 30 years, Lost Time offers a “wider-reaching exploration and celebration of the roots music that influenced them growing up in Southern California” (Los Angeles Times), including Lead Belly, Oscar Brown, Jr., Blind Boy Fuller and Big Joe Turner, among others.

Spending four weeks at #1 on the Americana Music radio chart, Lost Time garnered rave reviews worldwide with Amer-ican Songwriter hailing “making up for lost time never sounded so good,”. MOJO, Classic Rock Blues and The Los Angeles Times included Lost Time on their 2015 Album of the Year lists.

In December, the brothers received a Blues Music Award nom-ination for Traditional Blues Male artist, their second blues award nomination. The 38th Annual Blues Music Awards will be held in Memphis, TN in May.

The Alvin brothers founded seminal early LA punk roots band The Blasters in 1979, and after Dave left the group in 1986, they did not record an album together again until Common Ground. In addition to its Grammy nomination, that record

earned wide critical acclaim, and features with NPR’s Fresh Air, The Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal and more.

“Lost time is not found again.” This ancient idiom is at the heart of brothers Dave Alvin and Phil Alvin’s long, tumultuous rela-tionship. However, in Dave’s own words, “Sometimes Fate, or

God or the Universe, gives you a rare chance to prove an old saying is wrong.” The brothers’ new album, appropriately titled ‘Lost Time’ (Yep Roc Records), does just that.

Over ‘Lost Time’s’ twelve tracks, Dave and Phil pay homage to a number of artists and songs that had an early, formative in-fluence, in Dave’s words “the masters of the Blues, the most transcendental form of Amer-ican music.” Everyone from Lead Belly to James Brown is represented, but the figure who looms largest on the album, and in the brothers’ own mu-sical journey, is Big Joe Turner. The Alvins met Big Joe as teen-agers, and he would mentor them for the remainder of his

life. They remain his humble students, and cut four Turner songs for ‘Lost Time.’

If their GRAMMY-nominated 2014 album ‘Common Ground’ was the sound of a partnership rekindled, ‘Lost Time’ is a four-alarm fire. Dave’s guitar work slithers and stings as nev-er before, and Phil’s feral howl cuts to the core. Dave and Phil both sing and play guitar throughout ‘Lost Time,’ and are joined by a crack band including Lisa Pankratz (drums), Brad Fordham (bass), and Chris Miller (guitar).

Greetings All!

Glad we made it through the holidays unscathed. It has been a busy fall and winter so far with the International Blues Competition, Lash LaRue’s Toy Drive, many birthday parties and Hector Anchondo’s wonderful send off party. I would like to thank all those that donated their time to vol-unteer, prepared food for the pot luck meals, brought toys for the underprivileged children on the Pine Ridge Reserva-tion or just dug in their pockets and gave cash to whatever cause we were collecting for. You always came through. Let me repeat that. You always came through! I am so proud to represent this wonderful group of people.

The 21st Saloon has been our home base for many years, granted under a few different names. Scott Kirk has been the owner for the last three years, and has always been more than generous whenever we need anything for the Blues Society. When you come to a show and see a full house you may think the bar owner is getting rich. What you don’t see are all of the added expenses on top of the show, and the everyday cost of running a business. A typi-cal cost of show breakdown goes like this:

Band Fee – $1000.00Food and Drink-5 people – $125.00

Rooms – $250.00Sound Man – $100.00

Door Man – $50.00 = total of *$1525.00*

We are looking at over $1500.00 in average costs before any-one walks through the door. That means 150 people at $10.00 just to break even on the band. Granted alcohol sales are in-creased, but if we don’t have a full turn out, the drink sales won’t make up the difference and the night is a money loser.

We need to do what we can to stop the “money loser” nights. So many times when a band comes to the 21st for their first show, the turnout is small. Actually, that is when

I really like to see a band-all new material, new faces, new sounds! Take a chance, the band may become one of your favorites.

Summer is fast approaching, and thankfully we don’t have to go head to head with Playing with Fire this year. They will now be on the weekend. Jazz on the Green (JOTG) defi-nitely draws from our crowd, but please don’t forget about the 21st this summer. We have a lot of great bands coming through and we need to support our home base. If we don’t, it may be gone.

In closing, this March I will turn 60, and I only plan on doing it once. I am having a little get together at the Doubletree Hotel downtown Omaha with a couple of bands you may know, The John Nemeth Band and Mike Zito & The Wheel. Each band will play about 3 hours so we will have mu-sic from 6:00 pm until after midnight. Heavy hors devours will be served and special room rates will be available. So please set aside the evening of March 12th to help me kick off my 60th year on Planet Earth. I will be extending an invitation to the surrounding Blues Societies in Iowa, Kan-sas, Missouri and Minnesota. The more in attendance the more profit to be made and all profits from this show will go directly to the Blues Society of Omaha. Scott and I have already spoken and agreed that this show will be too large to accommodate everyone at the 21st Saloon.

Long Live the Blues!

-- Mark Grubbs, President of Blues Society of Omaha

To classify Chris Duarte simply as a Blues Man is an understatement. In his own words, “Rockin’ Blues” or ”Punk Blues” describes him best. “Ferocious blues” also fits. Legend has it that Chris will play so hard that his fingers bleed in a set. The legend is true. Photos attest.

Chris Duarte is a road warrior playing more than 150 dates a year. As well, Chris has headlined major festivals and clubs throughout the US, Canada and Europe.

Chris is a savant, a sorcerer of tone, a master at channeling the spirits and sounds of great musicians of our past, while remaining completely recognizable in his own sound. He has shared his stage with many of the greatest musicians of our time as well as the multitude of “young lions” and local musicians he meets on the road. From his many years as a side man in Austin, he easily changes roles from front to side, graciously allowing all to share the conversation of the jam.

Duarte’s music is ever changing. In many interviews, he has said “Music must evolve.” His own early offerings often become magical journeys into changing tempo and jazzy interludes before returning to their core. With such a vast catalog of recordings, there are no two shows alike. Every

set list is different, and each song may be offered distinctly, based on the feel of a show and the audience. For those reasons, loyal fans often return to a Chris Duarte show again and again, and al-ways walk away awed and satisfied to have witnessed such a legendary, but humble guitarist.

The Chris Duarte Group emerged on the scene out of Austin, Texas in the early 90’s and gained notoriety after wowing a packed room of industry insiders at the South X Southwest convention. In the wake of Stevie Ray Vaughan’s passing, Duarte quickly gained a National reputa-tion as young man imbued with a play-ing style comparable at times to the late

guitarist. After fielding interest from a number of labels, Duarte signed to Silvertone Records and his debut al-bum “Texas Sugar/Strat Magik” reportedly sold in excess of 100,000 units in the United States, no small feat for a blues/rock guitarist. This coupled with Duarte’s strong commitment to touring, was the impetus for Chris’ win-ning the “Best New Talent” in Guitar Player’s 1995 Read-er’s Poll. He also finished fourth in the magazine’s “Best Blues Guitarist” category that year behind legends Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy and B.B. King.

If you still haven’t experienced The Kris Lager Band they are an amazing group of musicians that are on the cusp of break-ing through to the mainstream. Consid-ered by many to be one of the most excit-ing bands on The American Music Scene today they capture a spirit and an energy that is as unique as their sound. Some even call them ‘The FEEL GOOD BAND OF THE CENTURY’. The Kris Lager Band embodies a ‘Celebrate Life’ mantra that resonates through their passionate live performances and have been rapidly in-fecting and uplifting the spirits of people across the nation.

This constantly touring outfit just signed a new manage-ment deal that is sure to raise them above obscurity and out of the underground. With new management onboard they enlisted the help of 7 time Grammy Award winning Producer, Steve Thompson to record with Kris Lager Band in the months to come. The future is looking bright for these

young troubadours as they quickly gain fans and believers with every heart felt and electrifying show they play.

Over the past decade they have managed to do the almost impossible: develop a grassroots following across the country without any national television or me-dia exposure. It’s a hard thing to do for a band that lives and spends a lot of time touring in ‘Fly Over Country’, but just as this band sets out to lift people’s spirts through music they also intend to change the perspective and define what it means to be a band out of The Midwest and par-ticularly Nebraska.

A sense of purpose on top of excellent musicianship, heart-felt delivery, and great original songs. Kris Lager Band is a very special group that you’ll be saying. “I knew them when….”
