PAB-Bearing abbreviations

Plain -- No Shield

Type Z -- One Shield (normally will have metal shields)

Type 2Z -- Two Shields (one on each side)

Type RS1 -- One Seal (normally the R indicates rubber)

Type 2RS1 --Two Seals (one on each side)

RZ: Low friction seal of synthetic rubber with sheet steel reinforcement on side of the bearing.

2RZ: RZ seals at both sides of the bearing.

ZN: Z shield (non-contact type) at one side of the bearing.

ZNR: as ZN, but with snap ring.

2ZNR: As2ZN but with snap ring

CD -- 15 degree contact angle (for angular contact)

ACD = 25 degree contact angle (for angular contact)

N: Snap ring groove in outside cylindrical surface of the outer ring

NR: As N, but with snap ring.

The bearings can also have a C2, C3, C4 or C5 designation after the bearing

Number. This indicates that the internal fit (the inner race to ball to outer

Race) is not standard. If your bearing has one of these designators, make sure

You get a bearing with the same designator. A C2 is less than standard

Clearance, while a C3, 4, and 5 are larger than standard.

If anybody has a set of old bearings and can mic them up (ID, OD and width) I

can cross reference them to a standard bearing number.

Internal Clearance

The bearing internal clearance as the total distance through which one bearing ring can be

removed relative to the other under zero measuring loads. Movement in the radial direction is

called radial internal clearance. Axial movement, axial internal clearance. The internal

clearance is standardized.

Rolling bearings are delivered with different clearance. The internal clearance will vary from

bearing to bearing type. The most common clearance is NORMAL (with no suffix).

C1=> bearing internal clearance smaller than C2

C2=> bearing internal clearance smaller than normal

C3=> bearing internal clearance greater than normal

C4=> bearing internal clearance greater than C3

C5=> bearing internal clearance greater than C4

Why Internal Clearance

1) In order to fit a bearing tightly on a shaft it is necessary that the shaft is slightly larger than

the bore of the inner ring. When the bearing is mounted, the inner ring will be expanded

and consequently the space available for the rolling elements will be reduced. The

reduction in space available for rolling elements, when the bearing is mounted

accommodated by internal clearance.

2) Steel will expand with increased temperature. In operation the temperature various parts

of a bearings will not remain uniform and resulting in varying degrees of expansion,

which is compensated by the internal clearance required is dependent up on the

mounting fit and the operating conditions. In case of doubt a bearing with greater

clearance shall always be selected.

Bearing Tolerances

The dimensional running tolerances for bearings are standardized and divided into different

classes of accuracy by ISO Standard cover closer tolerances e.g., classes 6 and 5(

corresponding PAB tolerances are designated P6 and P5).For specific applications such as

machine tool spindles. VRE manufactures bearings of even greater accuracy (tolerances classes

P4, SP and UP)..

Bearings Lubrication

There are three reasons why it is necessary to lubricate bearings.

1) To prevent inter metallic contact between the rolling elements, raceways and cages.

2) To protect against corrosion.

3) To reduce wear

Under normal operating conditions, bearing can generally be lubricated with grease. But

some designs require oil lubricant may even be used. In general the free space in the

bearing and housing should only be partly filled with grease (30 to 50%).

Lubricating properties deteriorate with time as result of mechanical working and ageing.

Consumed or contaminated lubricant must therefore be replenished or changed from

time to time (“Re-Lubrication Interval al”

,”oil change”)
