From the Director’s Desk

With pride, I forward the second issue of the third volume of NIT Puducherrybi-annual newsletter, "PARIPRASHNA". It reports on the important events andachievements of the Institute. It also acts as a memoir to relive the silverlining moments and inspires to work towards setting newer milestones forNIT Puducherry, apart from establishing a brand name for the Institute.

With progressive and successful steps towards making the campus greenwith hundreds of saplings, the Institute also witnessed establishment of a newboys hostel; Moyar Hostel within a record time of forty five days. I am proud toannounce that the Institute has signed Memorandum of Understanding(MoU)with industries and international technical Institutes for internships, studentexchange programs and collaboration on mutually beneficial research areas.Clubs like "Bharathidasan Tamil Mandram" is initiated to encourage and pro-mote the local culture. The students have represented at International YouthExchange programs in China and Russia for the first time in the history of theInstitute and made us proud. The research activities and publications fromthe Institute is increasing at a steadfast pace. I thank all the faculty, staff andstudents working untiringly for the development of the Institute. As a closingnote, I congratulate the editorial team and wish that "Pariprashna" reachesa larger audience and puts NIT Puducherry on the global arena of technicalexcellence.

MoU With Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise

NIT Puducherry signed Memorandum of Understand-ing(MoU) with Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise, a network-ing firm which celebrated its centenary year of exis-tence shared their Unified Communication as a Ser-vice(UCAAS) and Unified Platform as a Service(UPAAS),Rainbow, worth more than Rs. 5 Lakhs. The MoU alsoextends internship and job opportunities to M.Tech andB.Tech final year students of the institute. Alcatel-LucentEnterprise represented by Mr. Abhishek Sinha, Senior Di-rector R & D, Mr. Prasath. L. Rao, Country Director, SouthAsia, along with his team members, Mr. Jatin Kumar Pa-tro and Mr. Anurag, signed the MoU with Dr. K. Sankara-narayanasamy representing NIT Puducherry.

MoU with Anavadya Softech Pvt Ltd,Bangalore

National Institute of Technology Puducherry, signed aMemorandum of Understanding(MoU) with AnavadyaSoftech Private Limited, Bangalore. Anavadya Softechis a technical start-up based out of Bangalore, provid-ing Blockchain, Internet of Things and Mobile Appli-cation based solutions and services. Dr. K. Sanakara-narayanasamy, Director, representing NIT Puducherryand Mr. Narayanan, CTO, Anavadya Softech Private Lim-ited, Bengaore, signed the MoU offering internships toundergraduate and postgraduate students and also en-gage in collaborative research and development in the ar-eas of mutual interest with the faculty of NIT Puducherry.Two workshops were conducted on Blockchain at NITPYcampus in which expert lectures were delivered by pro-fessionals from Anavadya Softech Private Limited, Ban-galore.

Initiation of Bharathidasan TamilMandram

NIT Puducherry formalized "Bharathidasan Tamil Man-dram", a club aimed at encouraging and promoting lo-cal culture and literature. Dr. K. Sankaranarayanasamy,Director and Dr. D. Ragupathy, Assistant Professor, De-partment of Chemistry, faculty advisor for the Bharathi-dasan Tamil Mandram appreciated the efforts of the stu-dent participants who exhibited their literary talents withpoems and speech.

Institute celebrates 73rd

Independence Day

The National Institute of Technology Puducherry ob-served the 73rd Independence Day in its institutepremises at Karaikal. The national flag was hoisted at 8a.m by the Director, Dr.K.Sankaranarayanasamy. The Di-rector paid his tributes to the freedom fighters who laiddown their lives. He urged the students to contributeto the progress and enrichment of the country. He alsostressed upon the students role to enjoy the freedom, butwith responsibilities and moral standards. Mrch past waspresented by NITPY NCC cadets. The Institute premiseswas engrossed with patriotic fervour with the splendidcultural talent display of students and artistic demonstra-tion of the students of "Arts & Craft Club". The Institutenewsletter, Pariprashna Volume 3, Issue 1, was releasedin this event along with prize and certificate distribu-tion to the volunteers who participated in the "SwachhBharat Internship Programme —2019" organized by NITPuducherry.

Fit India Movement

Students of NIT Puducherry witnessed the live telecast ofinauguration of Fit India Movement on 29th August 2019from Indira Gandhi Stadium, New Delhi and address bythe Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In the evening, stu-dents took oath on Fit India movement, followed by afitness walk.

International Youth Exchangeprogram

Mr Kushal Nigam and Ms Jayshree visited China as partof International Youth Exchange program organized byMinistry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Govt of India. Simi-larly, Ms Manjusha Sridharan visited Moscow, Russia as apart of this event.

NIT Puducherry welcomes the NewUndergraduate Batch

A rigorous one-month induction program was conductedto the First Year B.Tech students between 19th August2019 to 15th September 2019. The event was initi-ated and addressed by the director Prof. K. Sankara-narayanasamy followed by a brief address about the in-stitute and interaction with the parents. The inductionprogram included, Yoga and jogging events conductedby Ms Divyadarshini, Shanmuga Yogashram, Karaikaland Mr Sugan, Chennai in the morning hours everyday,Guest lecture by Dr Arul Murugan, Assistant Professor,Pondicherry university Karaikal Campus on the topic ’Lifeskills for Engineers’, a seminar on topic ’Human valuesrelevant to the Youth’ conducted by Dr. Swaminathan,Program Executive, All India Radio, Karaikal, a seminaron ’Healthy Lifestyle’, delivered by Prof. Mohan, PAJAN-COA, Karaikal, a one-day Workshop on Disaster man-agement, delivered by Mr Manimaran and Mr Karpoora-sundaramoorthy, from Disaster Management cell KaraikalDistrict, Dr. Balaji Karthik , Department of CommunityMedicine, JIPMER Karaikal gave an intensive lecture onHealth and Hygiene and Prof. Ruchi Tewari, Mudra Insti-tute of Communication and Advertising, delivered a lec-ture on Social Responsibility of Engineers.

LEAP Entrance Exam

Second edition of LEAP made its way after successfulcompletion of its last year objectives. NSS student vol-unteers organized JEE Entrance exam for the studentsstudying in Karaikal with the help of Karaikal DistrictAdministration. The registration of students for JEE freecoaching for the year 2019-2020 was done on 24th and

25th (Saturday and Sunday) of August 2019 and the en-trance exam was held on the forenoon of 8th September2019. 460 students from class XI and XII registered forthe coaching, out of which 323 appeared for the exam.120 students were selected for availing free coaching byLEAP volunteers. The classes for the selected students arebeing conducted regularly on weekends. Also, number oftutors for the current year increased to 40.

NSS Activities

NSS unit organized a clean-up drive programme on 24th

August 2019, aimed at developing a sense of responsi-bility among the students in keeping our surroundingsclean. Almost 240 students actively participated in thedrive. NSS volunteers under the guidance of NSS Officer,Dr. V. Govindaraj, also attended the rally to spread theimportance of eye donation, aimed at removing myths inthe minds of people about eye donation, on 09th Septem-ber 2019. The rally was about a two-kilometer walk fromDistrict Collector’s office to Thanthai Periyar GovernmentSchool, Karaikal.

Inauguration of NanoElectrochemistry Research

Laboratory

Dr.K.Sankaranarayanasamy, Director, NIT Puducherry, in-augurated Nano Electrochemistry Research Lab at De-partment of Chemistry. Nano Electrochemistry ResearchGroup led by Dr.D.Ragupathy, Assistant Professor, De-partment of Chemistry, who was awarded with Rs.54.62Lakhs from DST, Government of India, New Delhi.

This lab synthesizes Nanomaterials such as nanofiber,nanoparticles and nanocomposite by electrospinning andelectrochemical methods. These nanofiber membraneand nanomaterials can be potentially utilized for waterdesalination and energy applications. This research grouphas Electrochemical Workstation, Nanospinning Unit, UV-Visible Spectrophotometer and FT-IR Spectrophotometerworth of Rs. 30 Lakhs. Upon the guidelines of Director,NITPY now open its windows for using these equipmentsto the other colleges, researchers and industries.

German Classes at NIT Puducherry

The National Institute of Technology Puducherry startedoffering A1 level German language course as a part ofForeign Language courses, for its students on 26th Au-gust 2019. The Programme was officially inaugurated bythe Director, Prof. K. Sankaranarayanasamy, amidst manyfaculty, staff and students. The Director emphasized theneed for learning new languages and its contributionto the assimilation of global cultures. He also pointedout how the newly introduced German Language coursewould help the NIT students to improve their employabil-ity. Ms. Jyotsna Vaidya, the resource person and Instruc-tor of the German course, persuing Ph.D. in German Stud-ies at the Dept. of Foreign Languages, Savitri Phule PuneUniversity, gave an introduction regarding the course andits expected outcomes.

He broadcastedthe various research, social and cultural awareness pro-grammes organized by the Institute. He also shared hiswisdom with the young minds on various technical andnon-technical courses that can be pursued after school-ing. Dr. S. Madappa, Associate Dean-Planning and De-velopment, was also invited by All India Radio on 18th

September 2019, to share his expertise on constructionsand buildings and clarify the doubts of the common peo-ple asking questions through telephonic calls.

ATAL Workshop on IoT

The Department of EEE organized a 5-day workshop on"Internet of Things" from 16th September 2019 to 20th

September 2019. The programme is sponsored by AICTETraining and Learning (ATAL) Academy. Dr. K. Sankara-narayanasamy, Director, inaugurated the workshop. Del-egates from more than 15 states like Rajasthan, UttarPradesh, Kerala, Haryana and Tamil Nadu participated inthe workshop. Seven experts from various departmentsand colleges helped in handson lectures and training dur-ing the 14 sessions of the workshop.

National Conference onCommunication Systems

The Department of Electronics & Communication Engi-neering, NIT Puducherry, Karaikal in association with TheInstitution of Engineers (India) organized, a one-day Na-tional Conference on Communication Systems on 21st

September 2019. Under the chief patronage of the Di-rector, Dr. K. Sankaranarayanasamy, the Conference was

inaugurated by Dr. M. P. Pillai, The Executive Director ofNational Institute of Electronics & Information Technol-ogy, Calicut, as the Chief guest with the release of a con-ference booklet. Dr. V. P. Harigovindan, Organising Chair,and other organizing secretaries, Dr. R. Boopathi Rani,and Dr. G. Lakshmi Sutha were also present. Nearly 100delegates from different states participated in the confer-ence by presenting 35 research papers. Dr. R. Radjaram,Honarary Secretary of Institution of Engineers along withthe Director, inaugurated the Student Chapterof Institu-tion of Engineerings, with an aim to motivate and helpstudents to conduct workshops, conferences and fellow-ships for researchers.

The annual inter-collegiate cultural festival, "LeCiel’19"was organized under the patronage of the Director,Dr. K. Sankaranarayanasamy, between 26th September2019 and 28th September 2019. All the students of NITPuducherry especially the cultural committee/variousclub student heads, members, volunteers and student’scouncil took initiatives and worked hard for the suc-cess of the event. The inauguration ceremony on 26th

September was presided by the Chief Guest, Mr. Ma-hesh Kumar Barnwal, SSP, Karaikal, and the director.LeCiel’19 witnessed registrations from more than 15 col-leges in and around Karaikal, Pondicherry and Chennai.The festival included many exciting events like singing,dance, music band, art & literature competitions, on-line events, traditional proshows like chitra natyum pro-gramme by Kalaimamani Mrs. Chitra Gopinathan andteam, Tharai Tappatai programme by Karaikal team, Eth-nic walk by students, Bingo Comedy by Mr. Vivek Mu-ralidharan, standup comedy by Mr. Kjeld Sreshth and DJnight.

Celebration of 150th Ghandhi jayanthi

NIT Puducherry observed 150th birth anniversary of Ma-hatma Gandhi on 2nd October 2019, in order to promoteKhadi, exhibition cum sales was organized in the cam-pus with Co-Optex, Karaikal, and Khadi bhavan. The NSSunit organised, "Swachhata Hi Seva" campaign, aimed atpromoting cleanliness. Posters with information on wastedisposal and principles of 3R’s (Reduce, Reuse and Recy-cle) for plastic wastes were put up. Nearly 30 studentsfrom the NSS unit participated in the cleanliness driveand awareness rally in Thiruvettakudy village.

National Institute of Technology Puducherry signed aMoU with the academic institute, Association of LeonardDe Vinci, Paris La Cedex, France. Prof K. Sankara-narayanasamy, Director, along with Dr. Vinopraba, Aso-ciate Dean R&C, visited Leonard De Vinci, Paris to meetDr.Alain Ovurieu, director, International relations, on 4th

October 2019, to discussed about the various possibilitiesof collaboration. The under graduate and post graduatestudents of various departments under student exchangeprogram can visit the other institute. Research scholars ofNIT Puducherry can visit the France University for theirresearch work. Prof K. Sankaranarayanasamy also visitedUniversity of Tor Vergata, Rome on 10th October 2019to discuss on MoU for exchange of students between theUniversities and research collaboration.

Linguistic Harmony Day

NIT Puducherry in association with district collectorateand Education Department of Karaikal, hosted Linguisticharmony Day on 21st November 2019 to mark the conser-vation week. The event was presided by Mr. M. Adarsh,Deputy Collector and Dr. K. Sanakaranarayanasamy, Di-rector and attended by officials from education depart-ment, Karaikal. Through speech, skit, short movie andquiz competition, students demonstrated cultural diver-sity in India. Dr. Amrtha Bhide and Dr. G. Koperun-devi, Associate Deans-Student Welfare, organized thisprogram.

Mini Marathon

NIT Puducherry organized a mini-marathon competitionfrom Karaikal Beach to NIT Puducherry spanning a dis-tance of ten kilometers on the day of Sardar Vallabh BhaiPatel’s birth anniversary on 31st October 2019. The mini-marathon was started by Mr. A. Vikranth Raja, DistrictCollector, Karaikal and Dr. K. Sankaranarayanasamy, Di-rector at 7 AM. More than three hundred participants in-cluding school children and girls from various places par-ticipated in the event. Prizes and certificates were givenout to the winners in the closing ceremony at 9.30 AM on

the same day at Institute premises. Dr. S. Babu, StudentsActivities and Sports Officer and his team organized theevent successfully.

Significance of World Standards Day

NIT Puducherry celebrated the World Standards Day inassociation with Institution of Engineers (India). Thedignitaries, Dr. Raman Saravanane Chairman, IE(India),Puducherry state centre and Dr. R. Radjaram, HonorarySecretary of Institution of Engineers, Dr. K. Sankara-narayanasamy, Director and Dr. N. Sendhil Kumar, Head,Department of Mechanical Engineering presided over thefunction. Dr.Narendran Rajagopalan, Head, Departmentof CSE, delivered a lecture on significance of Standardswith the theme "Video standards create a global stage".The dignitaries also inaugurated the Institution of Engi-neers (India) student chapter for mechanical engineer-ing with a motive to help conduct workshops and con-ferences by the students and faculty members of NITPuducherry.

Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat -Programme

NIT Puducherry celebrated "Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat"Programme, reflecting the spirit of national integration.Under this initiative, various states are paired and en-couraged to interact and engage in various activities soas to appreciate and learn the diversified cultures mu-tually. NIT Puducherry is paired with IIEST Shibpur andNIT Durgapur, West Bengal. The students of the institutewill be visiting the West Bengal counterparts as part ofthe programme.

Production

Prof. Amaro Olimpio Pereira Junior, Department of En-ergy, University of Federal, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, visitedour campus to deliver a guest lecture on "Energy Envi-ronmental Analysis of Biofuel Production" on 13th De-cember 2019. Students, faculty and staff of MechanicalEngineering attended and benefited from the guest lec-ture. The lecture was organized by Dr. N. Sendhil Kumar,Head, Mechanical Engineering.

ATAL National workshop onBlockchain Application Development

using Hyperledger & Ethereum

The Director, Dr.K.Sankarnarayanasamy inaugurated theFive-Days National workshop on "Blockchain Applica-tion Development Using Hyperledger and Ethereum",organized by the Department of Computer Scienceand Engineering, NIT Puducherry and AICTE Train-ing and Learning Academy (ATAL) on 27th Decem-ber 2019. More than fifty participants from vari-ous parts of India including Delhi, Andhra Pradesh,Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu participated in thisworkshop. Dr.K.Sankaranarayanasamy, Director, presidedover the inauguration ceremony. Dr.Narendran Ra-jagopalan, Head, Department of CSE, Dr. R. The Department of EEE, organized a five-day nationalworkshop on "Artificial Intelligence in Electrical Engi-neering Applications" from 06.01.2020 to 10.01.2020sponsored by AICTE Training and Learning (ATAL)Academy. Dr. K. Sankaranarayanasamy, director andDr.Shalabh Bhatnagar, Professor and chair Dept. of Com-puter Science and Automation, IISc, Bangalore andG.Aghila, the Registrar(i/c) presided over the inaugura-tion function. The workshop was graced by six expertsfrom various institutions of Higher learning and R & D or-ganizations. Delegates from different states across India,registered and gained from the workshop. and 28th June 2019 covering recent advances in Nat-ural Fiber Composites, Applications of Solar Energy,Gear Design, Industrial Safety, Robotics and Automa-tion, Theoretical and Experimental Fluid Mechanics, Arti-ficial Intelligence, and Developments in the Materials.TheChief Guest and Director Prof.K.Sankaranarayanasamy,presided over the inauguration. The convener, Dr.N.Sendhil Kumar and the Coordinators: Dr.N.M.Sivaram,Dr.M.V.A.Raju Bahubalendruni, Dr.Johnney Mertens,Dr.Vadivukkarasan and Dr.Narendran Rajagopalan coor-dinated the necessary arrangements for FDP-RAM 2019.Delegates from different states across India participatedin the workshop.

Career Guidance Program by NITPYRotaract Club

The Rotaract club established in the Institute, under theleadership of Mr. Mukul, president, Rotaract club, NITPYand guidance of Dr. Narendran Rajagopalan, faculty-advisor, visited government schools to give career guid-ance to the school children and also distributed stationer-ies among the underprivileged students. They also guidedabout Navodaya Entrance Examination and its prepara-tion.

The faculty and staff of the Institute along with their re-spective families joined together to celebrate New yeareve on 31st December 2019. This was the first famliy get-to-gether organized in the history of NITPY. The childrenhad a gala time with painting, cultural shows and games.

Placement Activities

Many technical companies visited our campus for place-ments in the academic year 2018-2019 starting in themonth of July 2018 with the arrival of CodeNation. Fol-lowing suit were big corporates and startups, AgilisiumConsulting, Inatech, Virtusa, Mu Sigma, L& T Engineer-ing and Constructions, Tejas Networks Limited, L & TInfotech, Byju’s, Mphasis, Jaro education, Intellect de-sign, Samsung R&D, Technoforte Software, Global Logic,Raam Group, Logic Fruit, Valued Epistemics, Arris, JSWSteels, Wafer Space Semiconductor Technologies, SAPLabs, Optum, Z S Associates, Alcatel Lucent Enterprise,IVL Infoview, MBIT Wireless, ABB India Limited, LakshyaEducare, among others. For the academic session 2018-19, a total of 71 offers were received by the students outof the 81 eligible. The maximum CTC of 10 Lakhs per an-num was bagged by the students. The average CTC wasaround 6 Lakhs per Annum. The placement cell headedby Dr. Narendran Rajagopalan with Ms. Mahalakshmi asoffice assistant and student coordinators is striving to-wards the goal of 100 percent placement for the students.

18th Senate Meeting

NIT Puducherry held the 18th senate meeting on9th December 2019 and approved the results of oddsemester 2019-2020. The senate also approved the in-take increase in under-graduate programs, for admissionsthrough Study in India initiative. Admission to M.Techprograms for armed service officers under post gradu-ate training programme was also approved in the senate.Dr. Boopathirani and Dr. B. Surendiran, Associate Deans-Academic, organized the meeting.
