PLACE OF WORSHIP UPDATE BY PHIL SIDHWA

The various sub-committees of the Place of Worship Advisory Committee are busy working towards pushing this pro-ject towards completion. We are currently focussed on raising awareness of our Atashkadeh/Agiary project within, and outside, our community to raise funds and demonstrate the need for such a facility in North America. A fund-raising strategy has been developed to approach organizations and individuals globally. Our communications sub-committee has been working hard to create a beautiful and informative brochure, to explain our project to world-wide donors, for which we have hired a marketing and communications expert to assist us. We have submitted arti-cles in different journals, and have been interviewed by media, including CBC Radio, to explain our project. We re-cently met with the ZSO and OZCF boards at their joint meeting, and also presented the project to the ZSO Kanoun group at their Navroz celebration. We will be presenting our project at the Fezana AGM on April 29, 2016.

The OZCF Gala committee is gearing activities towards the upcoming Gala, which promises to be a fabulous event, and will hopefully raise a lot of money through generous donations from our membership, so please buy your tickets to support this project.

Our finance team continues to investigate financing alternatives for the Place of Worship and future development; we continue to have discussions with the Town and Region staff on approvals and permitting matters relating to wa-ter and wastewater, infrastructure requirements in the North Oakville East Masterplan; the by-law governance sub-committee has developed a governance structure that will involve numerous North American organization repre-sentatives sitting on the committee for the administration and running of our future Atashkadeh/Agiary. We have invited ZSO and Kanoun representatives to participate and sit on this governance committee to make it inclusive of all Ontario Parsis and Iranians. It is our strong belief and hope that this project will conjoin all Zoroastrians across North America towards a common objective. This is a House of Ahura Mazda, open to all, a place to feel God’s uni-versal presence, to experience spiritual peace, to worship and join a community together in prayer.

We will keep you updated on our progress and urge you to give generously towards this project. To ease the finan-cial pressure on families, we can tailor make a donation program that enables donors to contribute, for example, over a three year period. A prominent Donor Wall will be a feature within our Atashkadeh /Agiary, honouring those who will help to build it. Naming opportunities for specific rooms also exist. We will be pleased to discuss how you would like to be recognized at your preferred gift level. All gifts are most gratefully accepted and all donations will receive an official tax receipt.

This is our time to create a legacy for our children and our faith...with Ahura Mazda's guidance and blessing.

ENTERTAINMENT COMMITTEE NEWS

The OZCF and ZSO held a joint Navroze function on March 25, 2016. Mahveer Javat and his entertainment committee, along with Anaita Ogra from ZSO, put up a grand show at the Apollo Banquet Hall in Mississauga.

The banquet was very well attended and over 370 people ate, drank and danced away the night to the music of DJs Sabby & Bosco. The Presidents of OZCF & ZSO felicitated many volunteers who were honoured for services rendered to the OZCF. Plaques were awarded to our young priests, who have given service to the community, sometimes coming out to pray in the early hours of the day. The recipients were Hormuz Javat, Rushad Bharda, Kev-an Madan, Farhan Panthaki, Kamran Panthaki, Arman Panthaki , Nekzad Illava & Rishaad Unvala.

Other volunteers - Jeroo Madan, Arnavaz Dhabhar & Neville Patrawala - were also award-ed plaques, for the timeless hours helping out with events for the community. Raffle tick-ets were sold by our volunteers and thanks to the efforts of Khurshid Engineer & Gul Patel, we were able to collect a tidy sum. Prizes were given out as the evening progressed and we had many happy guests.

The photo booth run by Nari Mavalvala and his family was, as always, a big hit. The food was very delicious – the starters and the sumptuous dinner that followed was enjoyed by all. The banquet hall was packed to capacity, and the crowd being a perfect mix of seniors, adults and children, had a wonderful time, dancing away until the wee hours of the next day.

Special thanks go out to the entertainment committee - Jeroo Madan, Hormuzd Engineer, Arnavaz Dhabhar, Zarina Gutta , Mahveer Javat & Anahita Ogra from ZSO, whose efforts made up for a very successful evening.

NAVROZE JASHAN AND CELEBRATION

On Monday March 21, the OZCF hosted a Khushali nu Jashan followed by dinner. The event was sold out; there were more than 200 people present. The hall looked elegant with flowers in yellow and purple, tables set with purple tablecloths and rose petals.

Seven mobeds participated in the Jashan that evening. A big thank you to Khushroo Bharda, Rushad Bharda, Nekzad Illava, Hormuz Javat, Kevan Madan, Xerxes Madan and Khushroo Mirza for officiating at the Jashan. Armaity Anandasagar, Pauru Chaturvedi, Ma-rukh & Rohin Hilloowalla, Khorshid Jobani, Gulrukh & Cawas Patel and Marzi & Kermin Byramjee, sponsored the evening’s dinner, flowers and chasni. We are, as always, grateful to all the families for the donation of stum meals, flowers, fruits and all other items for the five days of the Fasli muktads. Each gatha day ends well with Khurshed Patel and Hozi Patel leading the congregation in singing the excerpts of the gathas.

A very big thank you to Ervad Nozer Kotwal who always organizes the prayers for the Muktad days, the young mobeds who gave up their March break to come out and pray, and all other mobeds, who participated in the muktad prayers. Thank you also to Fred Golwalla, without whose organizational skills and tireless work all week long, we could not have managed.

YOUTH ACHIEVER OF THE MONTH—TANYA HOSHI

Zoroastrian filmmaker Tanya Hoshi is producing a comedy web series called How to Buy a Baby, which is about a couple struggling to get preg-nant, thus resorting to IVF treatment. The web series will explore the ex-pensive world of infertility, where many couples dish out thousands of dol-lars at the chance to have a baby, without any guarantee of results. The writer of the series, Wendy Litner, is going through IVF herself and is using the platform of comedy and storytelling to reach out to others who may be going through the same thing.

The web series is competing for the Independent Production Fund during March and needs all the attention it can get in order to attract potential funders. Please view the teaser, subscribe, like and comment to support Tanya in making this series come to life.

Tanya completed her Honours Bachelor in Cinema Studies from University of Toronto in 2013 and has completed the Sheridan College Advanced Film and Television program. In 2015, Tanya was selected to be a member of the competitive CMPA screen-based production program. Tanya is current-ly an Associate Producer at Mercury Films in Toronto. When she isn't work-ing in film, Tanya teaches music in the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Program, where she trains cadets and composes music for them. Tanya urges any young aspiring filmmakers to reach out to her for any advice.

WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF SAROSH YAZAD IN THE ZOROASTRIAN RELIGION?

By Ervad Ramyar Karanjia of Dadar Athornan Institute

Sarosh Yazad is one of the most important Yazads, who is given the title of Saalaar-i-Daamaan-i-H ormazd– is “Commander of the creations of Ahura Mazda. The 17thday of the Zoroastrian calendar month is dedicated to him. He is a co-worker of Ardibehst Ameshapand.

Sarosh Yazad presides over divine guidance, inspiration, intuition and revelation. He gave the divine revelation to Prophet Zara-thushtra and divine guidance to many other kings like Gayomard, Jamshed and Faridun

An important function of Sarosh Yazad is to protect the souls of the living as well as the dead. Immediately after death, when the soul leaves the body, its state is like that of a new born child. Sarosh Yazad looks after such souls for the first three days and nights, till the Individual Judgement takes place on the dawn of the fourth day after death. Sarosh Yazad is also present at the time of the Judgement.

Sarosh Yazad is closely connected with holy words of prayers. He is called tanu-maanthra that is his body is made of words of prayers. He is responsible for taking our prayers to the divine world. That is why we start all our prayers with Sarosh Baaj.

Sarosh is the most powerful Yazad at night. He protects people against all evil. That is why we have a tradition of saying “Sarosh Yazad Panaahbaad” – May Sarosh Yazad protect you” before going to bed, which is like Zoroastrian “Good Night”

Sarosh is the only Yazad in whose honour there are two Yashts in the Khordeh Avesta – Sarosh yast Vadi to be recited only in the Aiwisruthrem Geh and other Sarosh Yash Hadokht which can be recited for the rest of the four Gehs.
