Bozeman House . 5- . - , - . . . ;-. - - . . - I - .

The Bozeman House is a frame, one! , m d one-half &r&, tr@ek-Revival dwellkng built . in *e mid 1840's for early Clark County settlez and farmer, Michael Bozemm.

T h e House is Wtinguished by i t s early date of construction, by the integriw and quality of its Greek-Revival detailing and nassing and by its association w i t h Michael Bazeman, m e v af one of the mbst sus~@ss fu l large farming operations in pre-civil war Clark County. . . . .

Michael Bozeman was born in Jones County ~eorgia on August 16, 1808. Re left Georgia fo r Alabama in M19 and in 1835 he c a m to Arkansas, In 1827, he married Luey Ann Browning w i t h whom he had nine children.

( dozeman b u i l t a log cabin on his first tract of land in Clark Comty. In s&sequent .

years, he greatly increased h i s land holdings and t a x records idicaterthat his estate: eventually covered 9,000 acres. By 1852, he was the second leading producer of tmtton : in Clark County and according to h i s biogra?her, Farrar Newberry, Bozeman was repoxted to be w o r t h in excess of a quarter of a mil l ion dollars. Impressive figures for ante- .. bellum Arkansas. A more intimate picture of Bazeman' s ~lantation is revealad in an 1857 plantation journal w h i c h was discovered in the Bozeman house. The journal lists a large variety of crops g m on the plantation, and Newberry states that it ''reveals the meticulous care he gave to e w r y detail of the management af h i s growing enterpr5seY

Bozsmm died on May 26, 1883.

Bozeman's position of inportance both as an early settler and as a land pmprieter is x e v ~ a l e d i n a listing df his civic ventures. He was a charter member of the B e t h a l B a p t i s t church formed in 1836 and in tlhe same year he represented his church in the establishment of the Saline Baptist Asseciation, an organization composed of s i x south:, C e n t r a l Arkansas Baptist Churches (with 78 total members) . It: was the first such -.

c=soeiation south of the Arkansas Rives, In 1847 he helped to foun& O&l'aaB Academy perhaps the f i r s t painted, frame, school house in Clark County. Bozeman was elected to the Arkansas Senate in 1853.

Zuilt at a cast: of $1,500.00 ca.1847, the Bozeman house fs one of the o ldes t s.~rvivi%ng structures in C l b k County, and is certanly one of the oldest-el3l3it=ing"such'd hi3h- level of workmanship. Newberry indicates that f i e home was constructed of oak timbers

The Michael Bozernan House is a Greek Revival style s t o r y and a h a l f frame house s e t on a brick p i e r founda t ion with a four column portico, a gable roof with two dormers on t h e main facade, two chimneys, and a rear wing with an e l l - s h a p e d gallery porch.

The exterior of the house is covered w i t h clapboard exposed s i x inches to the weather. The entablature across t h e m a i n facade has a notched frieze board simulating dentils which is continued around the f r o n t portico as well as under the rake cornice of t h e pediment. The front por t i co has four square columns with pilasters against t h e main facade and h a s simple v e r t i c a l grooves that give the appearance of f l u t i n g . T h e columns have p l a i n capitals and bases and the portico f loo r , although undoubtedly replaced, is constructed of wood, The two front dormers have n i c e l y proportioned pediments wZth a notched frieze board of smaller scale resembling dentils as en t h e main entabla ture . The rear dormer has a simple plain gable.

The roof a r i g i n a l J y covered w i t h wood shingles is now covered w i t h a s p h a l t sh ing l e s . The'rnain roof terminates at either end with a gable and the rear wing also terminates w i t h the gable. The ell-shaped rear porch an piazza has a shed roof.

The main entrance under the f r o n t portico is double doors w i t h s i d e l i g h t s and transom and each door has two continous

vertical panels in each. The windows in the main house are - single l i g h t double hung sash which appears to be unoriginal o I

and were probably - six l i g h t double hung sash originally. The z t w o f r o n t dormers still have six light double hung s a s h as does the rear dormer and the windows in the rear wing are six l i g h t double hung sash. The rear e n t r a n c e to the main center hall matches the front main entrance exactly. One window opens from the main house onto the rear p iazza and 4x0 doors f r o m t h e rear w i n g opens o n t o t h e rear piazza.

I The two chimneys are of brick pa r t i a l l y stuccoed and were

probably origfnally stoccaed completely. They each serve t w o i fireplaces back to back one in each of the four main rooms 05 i the house.

The floor plan is a typical Antebellum plan w i t h a twelve foot w i d e c e n t e r hall from front to back and t w o rooms on either s i d e of the h a l l . The rear wing has two more roams with con- necting doors from the main room of the house to which t h e wing
