three-day craft option is also provided. Bible Connection Points are given for each session to help you reinforce the Bible learning for the day.

Sharing the GospelWith Kids

The word gospel means “good news.” It is the message about Christ, the kingdom of God, and salvation. Use the following

guide to share the gospel with kids.

GOD RULES. The Bible tells us God created everything, including you and me, and He is in charge of everything. (Genesis 1:1; Revelation 4:11; Colossians 1:16-17)

WE SINNED. Since the time of Adam and Eve, everyone has chosen to disobey God. (Romans 3:23) The Bible calls this sin. Because God is holy, God cannot be around sin. Sin separates us from God and deserves God’s punishment of death. (Romans 6:23)

GOD PROVIDED. God sent His Son Jesus, the perfect solution to our sin problem, to rescue us from the punishment we deserve. It’s something we, as sinners, could never earn on our own. Jesus alone saves us. (John 3:16; Ephesians 2:8-9)

JESUS GIVES. Jesus lived a perfect life, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again. Because Jesus gave up His life for us, we can be welcomed into God’s family for eternity. This is the best gift ever! (Romans 5:8; 2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 Peter 3:18)

WE RESPOND. We can respond to Jesus. The ABCs of Becoming a Christian is a simple tool that helps us remember how to respond when prompted by the Holy Spirit to receive the gift Jesus offers.

ADMIT to God that you are a sinner. The first people God created chose to sin and disobey God. Ever since then, all people have chosen to sin and disobey. (Romans 3:23).

Tell God you messed up and you are sorry for doing your own thing, and turning away from Him through your thoughts, words, and actions.

Repent, turn away from your sin. (Acts 3:19; 1 John 1:9) Repent doesn’t just mean turning from doing bad things to doing good things. It means turning from sin and even from your own good works, and turning to Jesus, trusting only in Him to save you.

BELIEVE that Jesus is God’s Son and receive God’s gift of forgiveness from sin. You must believe that only Jesus can save you, and you cannot save yourself from your sin problem—not even by praying to God, going to church, or reading your Bible. Your faith or your trust is only in Jesus and what He did for you through His life, death, and resurrection. (Acts 16:31; Acts 4:12; John 14:6; Ephesians 2:8-9)

CONFESS your faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. Tell God and tell others what you believe. If Jesus is your Savior, you are trusting only in Him to save you. Jesus is also Lord, which means He is in charge. You can start following Him and doing what He says in the Bible. You are born again into a new life and look forward to being with God forever. (Romans 10:9-10,13)

If you sense that children are under conviction from the Holy Spirit and would like to respond to the good news, spend some time

counseling and praying with them individually. If you sense that a child is not ready to pray and respond in faith and repentance, continue to prayerfully teach him about Christ during the week.

Before arriving, you need to plan out your day and get ready for the kids who will rotate through crafts. Use the following steps for successful preparation.

Be a Craftsman Builder

LOOK AT THE BLUEPRINT• Read the Scripture for each day from your Bible and

pray that God will speak to you through His Word.You can find this information on page 3.

• Read through the teaching materials thoroughly.Highlight key points from the Bible Summarieson pages 6, 10, 14, 18, and 22 to gain a deeperunderstanding of the biblical truths being taught inBible study.

• Pray for yourself, the other leaders, and helpers atVBS. Together you can share the gospel of Jesuswith your community.

IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS• Ask your VBS director for the ages and number of

kids you will need to prepare for.

• Find out how long you will have with each rotation

• Select the crafts you would like to make during VBS.Keep in mind how much time you have and the agesyou will lead. All crafts are written for and tested withchildren who have completed grades 1–6.

• Use the supply lists on pages 4–5 as you plan. Onlygather supplies for the crafts you choose.

• Make a list of the items your church has, itemsto collect from church members, and items topurchase.

• Copy the templates needed for each craft.

• Prepare a sample of each craft chosen. Familiarizeyourself with the procedures and what to expectwhen guiding children.

• Label a box or crate for each day. Place collectedsupplies in the appropriate box.

LAY THE FOUNDATION• Look for ways to reinforce biblical truths such

as using the Craft Connection for the craft youhave chosen.

• Relax and enjoy the chance to build relationshipswith the children who will rotate through crafts.

• Be flexible. Adjust your plans to make this the bestexperience possible for you and the kids you teach.

Concrete & Cranes®

Look up—way up. That’s where we’re headed. Where I-beams float effortlessly high overhead, carefully guided into place by powerful machinery. Where steel and glass converge in a colossal design that appears to almost touch the sky. These magnificent structures were elaborately designed and intricately built. Yet they all began the same way—with concrete and cranes, rivets and rebar, bulldozers and backhoes; and most importantly, a solid foundation. This summer, kids will don their hard hats and head out to the construction site to discover that skyscrapers aren’t the only things that need a rock solid foundation.

During VBS, kids will discover that Jesus’ love provides a foundation that will last. When the storms of life come, they’ll need the One who will be with them to the end of the age. When anxiety sets in, they’ll need the assurance that true worth comes from being a child of God, not from what other people think about them. When they feel unworthy, they can remember that Jesus loved them enough to die for them. They’ll learn to be wise builders who continue in what they’ve learned and firmly believe. And they will discover that He who began a good work will be faithful to carry it on to completion. We’re all a work in progress. Life is a hard hat zone. But just wait ‘til you see what God will do!

Day 1 Foundation of Love—Jesus Chose Matthew

Jesus called Matthew, a tax collector, to follow Him. Matthew left everything behind and followed Jesus. Matthew hosted a banquet. Jesus and His disciples came to the banquet. The Pharisees complained and questioned why Jesus ate with tax collectors and sinners. Jesus told the Pharisees that He came not for the righteous but for sinners. (Matthew 9:9-13)

Day 2 Foundation of Forgiveness—Paul’s Redemption

Paul was chosen by God to bring the good news about Jesus to the Gentiles. He was arrested and later taken to King Agrippa to tell his story. Paul told how he used to persecute believers. But one day, on the road to Damascus, he saw a bright light and heard a voice speaking to him. The voice was Jesus. Paul obeyed Jesus’ command and told people everywhere that Jesus is the Messiah. (Acts 26:1-29)

Day 3 Foundation of Worth—Jesus Prayed in the Garden

On the last night Jesus spent with His disciples, He went to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. He asked His disciples to remain awake and pray while He went further into the garden. Jesus was distressed because He knew He was going to die on the cross to save people from their sins. Jesus returned to the disciples three times and found them asleep each time. The last time He told the disciples to get up and follow Him. Jesus knew the time had come to follow through with God’s plan. (Matthew 26:36-46)

Day 4 Foundation of Promise—Jesus’ Resurrection and Promise

On the Sunday after Jesus’ death, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James went to the tomb. When they arrived, they saw that the stone had been rolled away and an angel was sitting on it. The angel told the women that Jesus had risen. He instructed them to go tell the disciples to meet Jesus in Galilee. Later the disciples traveled to Galilee, where they saw Jesus. The disciples received instructions from Jesus and the promise that He would be with them always! (Matthew 28:1-10,16-20)

Day 5 Foundation for Life—Wise and Foolish Builders

Jesus told a parable about two builders. He said that everyone who heard His words and acted on them would be like the wise man who built his house on the rock. The house had a strong foundation and would stand against the wind and the rain. However, those who did not listen would be like the foolish builder who built his house on the sand. Once the wind and rains came, the house collapsed. If people listen and obey Jesus, they will have a strong foundation for whatever happens in their lives. (Matthew 7:24-29)

Decorating and SuppliesDECORATINGUse these ideas to help kids feel as if they have stepped into Bulldozer Crafts.

❑ Print each day’s Point on cuts-of equipment that might be found on a worksite. Attach to the focal wall.

❑ Trace and cut out a large bulldozer from cardboard to place on the door or outside the room next to the door.

❑ Hang the VBS 2020 Supersized Backdrop (005818608) on the wall to give the feel of being on a worksite.

❑ Place supplies in upside down plastic hard hats to set on the tables.

❑ Use items such as orange cones, construction zone signs, caution tape, and so forth to add to the decor.

Barricade Door Hanger

CRAFT CONNECTIONWelcome the kids to Bulldozer Crafts. Remind the kids that in today’s Bible story Jesus called Matthew by name to follow Him. Say: “Jesus chose Matthew and loved him even though Matthew did nothing to earn His love. Jesus chooses to love us, too.” Show the kids the door hanger you made and tell them they will make their own door hanger as a reminder that Jesus knows their name and loves them.

ASSEMBLEStep 1: Glue eight of the orange foam pieces along the top edge of the white

craft foam. Leave about a half an inch to an inch between each piece.

Step 2: Repeat Step 1 across the bottom of the white foam.

Step 3: Use a permanent marker to print your name in the center of the white foam between the orange rows.

Step 4: Thread one end of the cord through one of the holes and tie to secure. Repeat with the other end of the cord through the second hole to make the hanger.

Step 5: Use stickers to decorate the door hanger as desired.

❑ 4-by-12-inch pieces of white foam board (1 per child)

ADVANCE PREPARATION

❑ Punch two holes in the top of each piece of the white foam with an awl.

❑ Cut the orange craft foam in the specified measurements with a slight slant on the long sides.

❑ Cut the strands of cord as per measurements given.

❑ Make a sample door hanger.

LEADER TIPS• Tie the string on the hangers in advance for younger children. • Use orange tape in place of the craft foam. Stick a length of tape to the

table. Guide kids to draw diagonal lines on the tape and cut. Adhere the tape to the foam board.

ADVANCE PREPARATION

❑ Cut out heart templates from the thin cardboard to fit the center of the bag. You will need one per child per session.

❑ Make a sample Jesus Loves Me Bag.

CRAFT CONNECTIONWelcome the kids to Bulldozer Crafts. Show them a sample of the bag. Remind the children of today’s point—Jesus chooses to love me! Tell kids that they will make their own bags to remind them of Jesus’ love for them.

LEADER TIPS• Use the bags for kids to place their crafts in for the week and

send home on the last day of VBS. You may want to purchase larger bags if you will be using the bags for this purpose.

• Decorate with theme-related stickers, and write on the bags with metallic markers.

ASSEMBLEStep 1: Write Jesus Loves across the top of the bag and your name in the center of the

bag.

Step 2: Place a piece of tape in the center of the heart template. Tape the heart in place over your name.

Step 3: Color from the edge of the template outward about one to two inches all the way around the template with the chalk.

Step 4: Gently, use your finger to feather out and blend the lines of the chalk. Gently pull the template off the bag.

❑ 16-ounce plastic cups (1 per child)

❑ Plastic spoons (1 per child)

❑ Clean plastic containers (1 per child)

❑ 8-ounce waxed cups (2 per child)


❑ Small rocks (3-4 per child)

❑ Paint or paint pens in various colors

❑ Paint brushes (several for kids to share)

❑ Potting soil

❑ Small succulent or grass seed (1 per child)

❑ Plastic tablecloths

ADVANCED PREPARATION ❑ Cover the tables with tablecloths.

❑ Wash and clean out the plastic containers you collected. Any type of plastic food tub, bottom portion of 2-liter bottles, or bottom portion of sports drink bottles will work well.

❑ Make a sample planter.

DAY 1ADVANCED PREPARATIONPlace the stepping stone or cement mix into a ziplock bag for each child.

ASSEMBLEStep 1: Empty the cement mix carefully

into a 16-ounce cup.

Step 2: Pour the water into the cup with the mix .

Step 3: Mix well with the plastic spoon. Be sure to scrape along the bottom of the cup so the mix is well incorporated with the water.

Step 4: Write your name on the bottom of the plastic container. Pour the mixture into the container.

Step 5: Press the smaller cup into the center of the cement mixture. Place a few rocks in the cup to weigh it down.

Step 6: Set aside and let dry for 24 hours.

DAY 2ADVANCED PREPARATIONSet the paint and brushes out on the tables.

ASSEMBLEStep 1: Take the rocks out of the cup.

Twist the cup to remove it from the cement.

Step 2: Remove the plastic container from the bottom of the cement. You may need to snip a small section with scissors to get started.

Step 3: Write your name on the bottom of the cement pot with a permanent marker.

Step 4: Use the paint to paint designs around the outside of the cement container.

Step 5: Set the container aside to dry.

DAY 3ADVANCED PREPARATIONPlace a small amount of potting soil for each child in an 8-ounce cup.

ASSEMBLEStep 1: Place some potting soil in the

center of the planter.

Step 2: Plant the succulent or grass seed in the soil. Add more soil around the plant if needed.

Step 3: Add a little water to the plant.

LEADER TIPS• Give students small stones or clear

marbles to press around the small cup in the top of the container.

• Coat your containers with cooking oil if you are worried about the cement sticking.

LEADER TIPProvide small stencils or design ideas for children to paint onto their planters.

LEADER TIPKids can make this into a candle holder with a small votive or tea light candle or they can make it a trinket holder to place on a dresser to hold jewelry or change.
