We are committed to producing a unique, high-quality publication that focuses on the people, places and products of our culturally-dynamic community. Our goal is to breed localism and keep readers shopping and playing in Uxbridge and its hamlets. Our magazine is a reader-driven publication with the glossy look and feel of a city magazine. It’s a winning combination that’s proven to be a hit with readers and advertisers alike. We print 5,000 copies each month, and direct mail 4,700 via Canada Post. This ensures that Uxbridge Town Talk is delivered directly to our readers. The balance are left in key locations around Uxbridge Township, including Zehrs, the library, municipal office and high-traffic stores downtown.

town talk tidbitsHelp Make a Splashthe bonner boys are *this* close to making a splash pad for Ux-bridge a reality – but they need our help. residents are urged to buy a ticket to the upcoming car draw: $100 allows two people into the dance, live band, food, cash bar and a chance to win a 2012 Chevy Cruze or sonic, plus an additional $7,000 in cash and prizes. tickets are available at the Uxbridge arena (291 brock st. W.), Williamson Uxbridge (259 toronto st. s.), or by contacting bob Fer-guson at 905 852 1374. Visit www.bonnerboys.org for more info.

Helmet Safetythe region of durham says the most common given reason for kids not wearing helmets is because they are “uncomfortable” and “not cool looking.” Yet a 2012 safe Kids Canada report shows that when helmets are worn properly, the risk of brain injury is reduced by 88%, and head injuries by 85%. parents, remind kids that brain trauma isn’t cool, either – and wear helmets yourself to set an example for your kids. You can request a copy of the got Wheels, get a helmet brochure via the durham health Connection Line at 1 800 841 2729 or www.durham.ca.

this summer season, i have a challenge for you.i want you to take your family, and go visit our stores. don't even

go planning to purchase anything – just go browse. i guarantee you'll want to buy once you see our fabulous shops, but i just want you to make a commitment to go.

sadly, i keep meeting people who live here but have not once shopped our downtown (or uptown, for that matter). You don't need another lecture on how the people that run those businesses have families, just like i do, that they support your kids' soccer teams, sell tickets for community theatre and charity concerts, and that their commercial taxes fund everything from road improvements to grass cutting at Elgin park.

You don't need another reason. spending just $50 across 3 stores each month keeps them in business www.the350project.net and money in our town.

Go. Visit. Shop. Support.

I t is amazing what l i t t le hands and big minds can create given the opportuni ty.

one of the big play-interested ideas initiated by our best start children (ages 4-6) recently was the titanic. after completing a sci-ence experiment about things that float and sink, the kids got on the topic of the titanic. With all the media attention around the 100 years celebration of the sinking, it became a hot topic. the teach-ers took advantage of the children’s high interest and brought in newspaper clippings and resources from our public library.

in group discussion time the children came up with an idea to build the titanic. the staff and kids spent a great deal of

time brainstorming and developing a plan; the kids were very detailed about what they wanted their titanic to look like. together with parents, we started to collect materials and bring them into our classroom.

the construction of the titanic supported children’s learning through the physical, social/emotional, creative, science, math, language and literacy domains, which the staff at prYdE have implemented the past year.

over the years, Larry Whitelock, owner of stage 1 rentals, has played a large role in many of Uxbridge’s communi-ty and charity events. he’s provided the sound for the annual huck Finn Fishing day since its incep-tion and says that the durham highland games became a real “family affair” with many of his friends and his sons helping him out. he’s helped with Uxbridge ribfest, the duck derby, and

Uxperience for many years, as well as performances at Uxbridge Music hall and events held by the Uxbridge dance academy and the roxy theatres.

stage 1 has provided audio-visual services such as sound, creative and stage lighting and computer projection since 1987.

Larry enjoys the slower pace of Uxbridge and not having to fight traffic to get around town. Most of his family, including

the sound of Larry storY and photo // KathY siMa

Kathy sima lives in Uxbridge with her husband and two children. she works from home as a financial analyst and freelancer and enjoys hik-ing the Uxbridge trails.

his three sons, live in and around Uxbridge; Larry and his wife moved to Uxbridge when they were starting their family. they wanted to get away from the “hustle and bustle of the big city” and because housing prices were much more affordable here.

a big community supporter, Larry gives discounts to local businesses, donates time for charity events and sharing his expertise and acting as a resource to local groups. he enjoys being able to support so many great causes in our community, and finds the local events provide a welcome change from the corporate world work. in particular, Larry enjoys the outdoor events - especially “when the weather cooperates!”

one day Larry may be setting up for a large medical confer-ence, complete with audience response systems, and the next he’ll be helping a corporate client such as timex with a big sales meeting. Larry admits that it is a challenging job, but he enjoys being his own boss, and says that his work is “almost like a hobby to him” because he really likes what he does.

Uxbridge is an ideal location for Larry, as it allows him to live in a small town, while still being close enough to commute to his clients.

Larry looks forward to riding his motorcycle on the Cabot trail in nova scotia this summer.
