FROM THE DIRECTORAt United Way, we believe the most important work often happens in the trenches. We believe this is how lives are changed and our community strengthened. Fromthe leaders we have helped to grow to the opportunities we created. Our work tookplace right here at home—and it often took place outside of the public eye. Yet,whether in front of the camera or behind the scenes, our efforts to build a strongercommunity have left their own mark on countless lives. This year’s annual report shines a light on many of the people and organizations wehelped, as well as those who made it possible. You’ll see stories about our fight forthe left-behind children and about our fight against addiction and poverty. As theseexamples make clear, we fight for the health, education and financial stability ofevery person in every community. At United Way, we believe these three areas offocus are the building blocks for a better life.

Our community-based approach would be impossible without the assistance of our corporate, community, labor, andgovernment partners. Deeply rooted problems—from struggling schools to unemployment—require the time and talentsof a range of individuals and organizations, and we are incredibly grateful for their support. That support is critical in a time when it seems like the only constant is change itself. Political winds shift frequently, and businesses rise and fall with increasing regularity. Technology is both bringing us together and driving us apart. Intimes of turbulence, however, we believe that our time-tested way of working—forging unlikely partnerships andmobilizing resources to develop sustainable solutions—is more valuable than ever. People will look to United Way tobring them together with opportunities to organize, build coalitions, and effect positive change. We’re proudly stepping forward, and we’re eager for the challenge. We know that tough issues require tough work, andthat change doesn’t happen alone. To all our partners, donors, advocates, and volunteers: thank you for being in thetrenches with us this year. With your help, we will continue fighting to create lasting change that impacts countlesslives, makes our community a better place, and leaves a legacy–right here at home. United we fight. United we WIN.

Thank you,

Amber L. Wertman
