Having major surgery is tough, but for me, it nearly put me out on the street. My name is Joe and I want to tell you how United Way and 2-1-1 Texas helped me get back on my feet. I’d been working at my company for about a year when suddenly I needed an emergency quadruple bypass. I had a little money in my savings, but after co-pays and all the other medical expenses, those savings were wiped out. The doctors couldn’t clear me for work until I had recovered 100%, so I had to let go of my apartment and rent a room at a friend’s house. My family helped me out as much as they could, but that wasn’t enough. I didn’t know where to turn. That’s when I heard about United Way’s 2-1-1 Texas. The 2-1-1 staff made arrangements with program providers to get me the medication I needed. They also gave me 7 other referrals to budgeting classes, housing assistance, and food pantries. It was amazing. I didn’t know we had that kind of help available. Finally, my doctors cleared me to go back to work. Getting back on track would have been impossible without 2-1-1 Texas. Thanks to your gift to United Way, services like 2-1-1 Texas are able to provide vital assistance to those in need in Amarillo and Canyon.

The polio vaccine was a $7 billion
dollar idea! Jonas Salk left a vaccine
to remember but never put a patent
on it. When asked why he simply
stated “can you patent the sun?” His
“loss” of a patent would have given
him a “gain” of approximately $7
billion dollars! His vaccine has
been a vital part of immunizations
since the early 1950’s and
continues to be today. Jonas Salk
passed away before completing his
findings on a vaccine for AIDS.

This year our Leadership Givers were thanked with an
elegant evening of dinner, drinks and music. The event
was catered by Macaroni Joes and the venue was the
lovely home of Deborah & Wrus Weston. Thank you
for opening your home to us!
We were also able to have a second Leadership Event
downtown where FirstBank Southwest cook out team
served up hamburgers in the ANB courtyard. Special
thanks to Melissa Moore of Pantex, Teresa Soria of
Amarillo National Bank and Smith Ellis of FirstBank
Southwest on making this event a success.
Huge thanks to all who participated in this years Shop
United in Wolflin Square. We loved seeing all the shop-
pers at Lilly Finch & Semblance.

The new website features an

work as a community hub for
non-profit agencies in listing their
events. This will also be a great
resource and campaign tool for
our fantastic loaned executive
volunteers and companies.
While this is a work in progress,
we encourage any feedback on
how we can make it a
community hub for events,
training, and more. You can find
