Parkside’s trio of first-year coaches clearly up to the task

You can call them rookie head coaches if you want to, but with the experience that Jason Zitzke, Christine Paciero and Gregg Lewis bring to their UW-Parkside jobs this school year, the term just doesn’t seem to apply. All three were either longtime assistants or possessed previous head coaching experience.

Zitzke’s men’s soccer team outscored its opponents by 11 goals for the season and came within a goal or two of a .500 cam-paign, Paciero’s women’s volleyball squad qualified for the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament for the first time in eight years, and Lewis’ wrestling team is producing several outstanding individuals.

All three mentors agree that holding the head coaching reins at Parkside is a different ballgame

than what they had previously experienced.

“Soccer has been a big part of my life for a long time, as a player and an assistant under coach Rick Kilps, and so becoming a head coach was a continuation of the process,” said Zitzke, a four-year starter for the Rangers beginning in 1999, a three-time all-region performer and a second-team All-American.

“But now that I’m sitting in the hot seat, it’s different. As an associ-ate coach, I would voice my opin-ions, but now the tough decisions are mine to make.”

Paciero joined Parkside after a highly successful stint as the head volleyball coach and athletic events manger at Division III Dominican University in River Forest, Ill.

“I played Division II volleyball and so I knew what to expect,” Pacieero said. “Volleyball is

volleyball, but the athletes are a little bigger and faster, there’s a higher level of intensity when you get to Division II, and of course, the competition is stronger.”

Lewis was an assistant under legendary coach Jim Koch for 16 years before being named head coach prior to the 2011-12 season.

“The head coaching job is different in that there is a lot more administrative duties than what I was used to,” said Lewis. “There’s also the great feeling you get when you’re the head guy and things are going well, as they have been so far this season.”

ZitzkeZitzke’s soccer team produced

a 7-8-2 overall record and a 5-8-2 GLVC mark this fall. Six of the Rangers’ losses came by one goal. The defensively-minded squad allowed two or more goals only twice all season.

“We gave up 27 goals the year before, so we really improved in that area,” Zitzke said. “But when you give up less than one goal a game, you should have a better record. You have to make things happen. Next season we have to do a better job of putting the ball in the back of the net. We need to develop a winning mentality.”

Among those who will return for the 2012 season are goaltender Nick Huftalin, a redshirt freshman who made 41 stops with a 0.87 goals-against average this season, and Jon Gourlay, a redshirt sopho-more who was the team’s leading scorer with seven goals and 16 points. Zitke’s assistant coaches are Alen Osmanovic and Dan Tredo.

A UW-Parkside Hall of Famer, Zitzke was an assistant coach for 12 years after a sensational playing career at UWP. He replaced his collegiate coach and Hall of Famer Kilps, who amassed 363 career victories at Parkside.

UW-Parkside reached the NCAA Tournament three times (2000, 2004, 2006) during Zitzke’s years as an assistant coach, claiming the GLVC championship in 2000. As coordinator of the offensive attack, the Rangers have been in the top three in scoring in the GLVC eight times during Zitzke’s 12 years. The 2006 squad had the eighth-best offense in the country, scoring 2.85 goals per game.

Parkside was also success-ful through Zitzke’s playing days,

going 57-22-3 during his time on the pitch. He scored 83 total points in his career with 28 goals and 27 assists. He is the only player in the program’s history to be drafted into two professional leagues (Milwau-kee Wave, indoor, and Milwaukee Rampage, outdoor). Zitzke played two seasons with the Wave, earn-ing a championship ring in 1999-2000.

PacieroIn addition to qualifying for the

conference tournament for the first time since 2003, Paciero’s volley-ball team won 11 GLVC matches, the most since 1997.

“Advancing to the conference tournament was a very clear goal of the seniors heading into the season and it was embraced by the other players,” Paciero said. “We could tell early on that it was going to be a good year because we beat

Northern Kentucky and Lewis and we hadn’t beaten them in years. We became a team that nobody wanted to play.”

An even bigger challenge for Paciero than her first year at the helm might be next season when she tries to field a competitive squad despite losing four key seniors – Addie Kramer, Stacie Bower, Cassy Marx and Courtney Stack – to graduation.

“Those are very significant losses and that’s going to mean some rebuilding,” Paciero said. “But we’ve got some good players coming back, including Bridget Nickel and Caroline Langer, our offensive leaders. We’re looking forward to the challenge.”

Paciero led a remarkable turnaround at Dominican that culminated with the program’s first conference tournament championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2010. She inherited a squad that finished 9-20 prior to her arrival in 2008 and led it to the school’s first volleyball regular-season conference champion-ship two years later. Her efforts earned her Northern Athletic Conference Coach of the Year awards in both 2009 and 2010.

Paciero served as a coach with the Wisconsin Juniors Volleyball Club as well as the varsity head coach at Cedar-burg High School. Prior to her time in the high school ranks, Paciero was an assistant coach at Wayne State University, helping the Warriors to two division championships and three 20-win seasons.

She also enjoyed great success as a player at Florida Southern College, where she won two regional championships including one Final Four appearance.

LewisLewis is only five meets

into his head coaching career, but already some of his top wrestlers are excelling. Dillon Bera at 157 pounds and Luke Rynish at 174 were individual cham-pions at the Pointer Open hosted by UW-Stevens Point Nov. 5; Rynish won individu-al titles at the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open hosted by Iowa State Nov. 13 and the Concordia Open in Mequon Nov. 19; and Collin Crume at 133, Nick Fishback at 157 and Rynish were champs at the Wisconsin Open hosted by UWP Dec. 3.Caroline Langer

for Luke, and I expect him to be a national champion,” Lewis said. “I’m really happy for him and the way he’s started his season. Collin is performing at a very high level, especially for a freshman, Nick is showing great technique and James Malechek is also doing very well.

“And we’re doing all this without some of our key guys, who should be com-ing back from injury soon, including Matt Gille, Dillon Bera and Mike Migawa.”

Lewis’ assistant coach-es are Eric Robinson, Ryan Woods and Curtis Hines.

Lewis has been with the Ranger wrestling program since the 1995-96 season, playing a vital role in the program’s success. Since his arrival at UW-Parkside, the program has had 48 All-Americans, 10 national finalists and four national

champions. The team has also finished in the nation’s top 10 nine times since 2000.

Prior to his coaching career, Lewis was a standout wrestler at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. He finished his collegiate career 15th on the Eagles’ all-time

wins list. He was 105-37 at UW-La Crosse including back-to-back conference championships as a 167-pounder in 1990 and 1991. He earned NAIA All-American honors in 1991 by finishing sixth in the country in the 167-pound weight class.

The 20th-ranked UW-Parkside women’s basketball team faced off against the 15th-ranked team in the NAIA, Car-dinal Stritch, in the DeSimone Gymnasium Dec. 6. The Rangers led 5-0 early, then 11-2, and never trailed in a 57-41 victory over the Wolves. UWP forced nine first-half turnovers and converted them into 15 points to help build a 35-23 lead at intermission. The Rangers turned the ball over only seven times the entire game. UWP will not re-sume play until Thursday, Dec. 29, when Indiana University Northwest pays a visit to the DeSimone Gymnasium. The non-conference clash tips off at 5:30 p.m. That game, and all remaining games, can be heard live on WRJN 1400AM, Racine. The squad returns to Great Lakes Valley Confer-ence play Thursday, Jan. 5, at Missouri-St. Louis.

After losing a pair of games on the final possession to two teams in the Top 10 in the country, the UW-Parkside men’s basketball team was looking to take some frus-tration out in its final game before a 23-day break from competition. Northland International was the victim in a 93-49 beating at the hands of the Rangers Dec. 6 in front of a spirited gathering in the DeSimone Gymnasium. The Rangers went on a 10-0 run early in the first half and an 18-0 run later in the stanza to take a commanding 51-15 lead at halftime. The team is 5-3 on the season, while the Pioneers leveled off at 6-6. UWP is back in action Thurs-day, Dec. 29, against Wayne State with a 7:30 p.m. tipoff in the DeSimone Gymnasium.
