Providing truly functional eyewear is becoming a much more specialized task, particularly as thespecifics of various jobs are analyzed across many industries and market segments. Impact protection,while certainly a vital requirement, is no longer the sole function of protective eyewear. Fit, comfort,style and visual performance all contribute to a total package that addresses workplace hazards as wellas compliance issues faced by the safety professional.

In the area of visual function, Uvex has developed a technology that incorporates unique dyes,designed to absorb select wavelengths of radiant energy (light), into the polycarbonate lens. Thisscience is called (SCT) Spectrum Control Technology,® a term that describes the ability of a lens tomanipulate light to reduce a spectral hazard or to provide distinctive filtration for specific viewing tasks.

SCT is a natural evolution of Uvex® plastic lens technology that has employed specifically formulatedresins to screen ultraviolet (UV) radiation in sunglasses and sport shields. In fact, Uvex stands for UltraViolet Excluded. All Uvex SCT protective lenses employ this technology, filtering 99.9% of the UVradiation from 200 to 400 nm.

SCT has found applications in a number of areas. Certain dyes and tints include basic compounds thatfilter solar radiation to reduce glare and to block radiation from operations such as welding. In the latercase, in addition to UV filtration, broadband infrared (IR) absorbers are blended into the polycarbonate toproduce the shades necessary for compliance with the requirements of Table 1 in ANSI Z87.1.

Carrying the technology a step further, it became apparent that eyewear could be designed to providefunctional assistance for specialized viewing tasks. In these cases, the emphasis is not solely onblocking harmful radiation but rather on providing distinctive lens tints to enhance visual perception.

For instance, in operations where high levels of yellow lighting are present, SCT-Blue lenses can beuseful in counteracting the color distortion present, helping to prevent eye fatigue. SCT-Vermilionlenses have been used in certain inspection operations where the color shift enhances contrast or highlights shadowing for better inspection results and increased productivity. SCT-Orange is effective at filtering blue and violet light that is present with UV curing lamps.

Incorporation of IR absorbing dyes are also employed to provide functional properties for sun wear.For example, SCT-Gray lenses reduce solar glare while allowing excellent color perception. Theaddition of special dyes also make the lens a good choice for utility workers who may be exposed to shortterm electric arcs, where UV, IR, and blue light are present.

Another member of the SCT family is SCT-Cobalt Blue, a deep blue lens used by furnace workers. It replaces cobalt glass, which is becoming scarce. The polycarbonate lens offers the same spectralperformance, including IR protection, as the glass, but half the weight.

The performance and utility of all SCT lenses is enhanced by the use of functional coatings, and Uvexapplies either of two proprietary formulations. Uvex ultradura® hardcoat imparts scratch resistance aswell as resistance to a wide variety of industrial chemicals. For environments where fogging may be anissue, Uvex offers its uvextreme® anti-fog coating that works by absorbing and releasing moisture in adynamic manner to help reduce fogging.

The tinted lenses described here are special purpose and are subject to specific markingrequirements in keeping with the ANSI Z87.1 standard. The safety professional and end-user should usethese tints only in areas where an on-site or workplace hazard assessment has determined that a hazardor viewing task exists. These tints should not be used as general-purpose eyewear as reduced levels oftransmittance or color bias may be present.

Uvex® Clear Lenses Uvex manufactures a clear lens

for indoor and outdoor work environ -ments where normal to low lightconditions exist. This clear lens has a Visible Light Transmittance of 92%. This means 92% of theavailable light will pass through the lens. The clear lens will absorb99.9% of UVA and UVB radiation up to 400nm. The clear lens alsoprovides true color recognition and meets the traffic signal colorrequirements of ANSI Z80.3-1996. It is suggested as a general purposesafety spectacle lens for mostindoor applications.

For general purpose use, Uvexsuggests clear lenses indoors andsunglass tints, preferably gray orbrown, for outdoors. As with allpersonal protective equipment, it is the employer’s responsibility toconduct an on-site or workplacehazard assessment.

Uvex® AmberLenses are available in a variety

of tints to reduce glare, screenhazardous radiation, or to provideother task specific filtration. In thecase of amber lenses, the yellowcolor filters out light at the blue endof the spectrum while allowinggreen and red light to pass. Greenlight is most efficiently processed bythe eye, while blue light is not aseasily focused, and can reducecontrast. This is particularly notice -able when light conditions are hazysuch as at dusk or on foggy days. Inthese cases, amber lenses will cutdown or eliminate the haze assoc -iated with the blue light, giving theperception of clearer and brightervision.

Uvex amber lenses transmitabout 90% of the available lightwhen “photopic“ or daytime trans -mittance is calculated according tothe requirements of ANSI Z87. Itweighs the eye’s ability to see in abell curve centered around thegreen portion of the spectrum. Inaddition, the lenses satisfy the colorlimit requirements of ANSI Z80.3,the sunglass standard, as they

relate to properties that influencetraffic signal recognition. In mostcases, amber lenses would beacceptable for daytime use.

At night, however, the eyeprocesses information differently.Night time or “scotopic“ transmit -tance is calculated using aweighting factor in which the bellcurve is shifted toward the blueportion of the spectrum. Sinceamber lenses filter out blue light,the direct effect is to reduce thelight available. The calculatedtransmittance of a Uvex amber lensdrops to 70%, which is a 20% lossof VLT. Amber lenses that aredeeper in color would result in aneven greater loss of transmittance.Under these circumstances, Uvexdiscourages night time use of amberlenses as general-purpose eyewear.

Outdoorworkers, such as gardeners andgroundskeepers, masons,construction workers, lifeguards,pilots, and roofers to name a few,are exposed daily to solar UVradiation and intense visiblesunlight. If these workers takephotosensitizing drugs, or hadcataract surgery, or experience anytype of retinal disorder, their eyesmay be even more susceptible tothis type of harmful light. Protectiveeyewear that incorporates a“general purpose“ lens tint willeffectively provide glare and UVprotection while enhancing visualcomfort for these workers.

Uvex manufactures an espressolens tint for outdoor workenvironments where sunlight andglare cause eyestrain and fatigue.This sunglass tint is brown/amber incolor and has a Visible Light

Transmittance of about 15%. Thismeans 15% of the available lightwill pass through the lens. Theespresso lens will absorb 99.9% ofUVA and UVB radiation up to400nm. The espresso lens tint alsoprovides true color recognition andmeets the traffic signal colorrequirements of ANSI Z80.3-1996. Itis suggested as a general purposesunglass lens for driving and mostoutdoor activities.

The Uvex espresso lens is also a“blue blocker“ lens. While blue lightis not harmful to the eyes, it cancause eye fatigue. Blue light makesthings appear hazy and out of focus.The Uvex espresso “blue blocker“lens will absorb 97% of blue light,thereby enhancing contrast. Thislens tint is a recommendedalternative to traditional graylenses. As with all personalprotective equipment, it is theemployer’s responsibility to conductan on-site or workplace hazardassessment.

Espresso Gold Mirror

Uvex® Espresso Gold Mirror Many work applications include

daily exposure to ultraviolet lightand visible glare. Outdoor workers,such as gardeners andgroundskeepers, masons, highwayconstruction workers, lifeguards,pilots, and roofers to name a few,are exposed daily to solar UVradiation and intense visiblesunlight. If these workers takephotosensitizing drugs, had cataractsurgery, or experience any type ofretinal disorder, their eyes may bemore susceptible to this type ofharmful light. Protective eyewearthat incorporates a “generalpurpose“ lens tint will effectivelyprovide glare and UV protectionwhile enhancing visual comfort forthese workers.

Uvex manufacturers an espressogold mirror lens tint for outdoorwork environments where sunlightand glare cause eyestrain andfatigue. This sunglass tint isbrown/gold in color and has aVisible Light Transmittance of about

15%. This means 15% of theavailable light will pass through thelens. The espresso mirror lens willabsorb 99.9% of UVA and UVBradiation up to 400nm. The espressomirror lens tint also provides truecolor recognition and meets thetraffic signal color requirements ofANSI Z80.3-1996. It is suggested asa general purpose sunglass lens fordriving and most outdoor activities.

The Uvex espresso gold mirrorlens is also a “blue blocker“ lens.While blue light is not harmful tothe eyes, it can cause eye fatigue.Blue light makes things appear hazyand out of focus. Uvex® SCT-Reflect 50When workers move from indoor

work environments to sunny outdoorapplications (fork lift drivers, truckdrivers, loaders, packers etc.).custom lens tints may be used toreduce glare. If these workers takephotosensitizing drugs, have hadcataract surgery, or experience anytype of retinal disorder, their eyesmay be more susceptible to thistype of harmful light. Protectiveeyewear that incorporates a taskspecific lens tint will effectivelyprovide glare and UV protectionwhile enhancing visual comfort forthese workers.

Uvex manufacturers a SCT-Reflect 50 lens tint for workers whowork in both indoor and outdoorwork applications to reduce glarewhich can cause eyestrain andfatigue. This tint is clear in colorwith a flash mirror coating and hasa Visible Light Transmittance ofabout 50%. This means 50% of theavailable light will pass through thelens. The SCT-Reflect 50 lens will

absorb 99.9% of UVA and UVBradiation up to 385nm. The SCT-Reflect 50 lens tint also providestrue color recognition and meets thetraffic signal color requirements ofANSI Z80.3-1996. It is suggested asa general purpose sunglass lens fordriving. It is designed specifically tosuppress glare in bright indoorapplications or to allow easytransition from inside to outside,cutting glare in less than full sunconditions. As with all personalprotective equipment, it is theemployer’s responsibility to conductan on-site or workplace hazardassessment.

Uvex® SCT-Orange

SCT-Orange

Uvex has developed acomprehensive family of taskoriented polycarbonate lens tints,employing (SCT) Spectrum ControlTechnology.® This technologyincorporates unique dyes, designedto absorb select wavelengths ofradiant energy into the lens. Thesedyes manipulate light to reduce aspectral hazard or to providedistinctive filtration for specificviewing tasks. SCT lenses providean added value for safety spectaclewearers that encounter visualhazards or viewing challenges intheir work environment. While theprimary need for eye protection isoften impact hazards, many workapplications also include radiationhazards including ultraviolet,infrared and visible glare.

In the case of SCT-Orange, thetint is designed for use in the dentalindustry or in other industries whereUV lamps are used for curingmaterials such as paints or inks. As

the chart below demonstrates, SCT-Orange offers a wide range of spectral protection. It absorbs>99.9% of potentially harmful UVA and UVB radiation. It furtherprovides protection by completelyabsorbing visible light up to 540nm,which includes violet, blue andcertain green wavelengths of lightwhich are emitted by curing lamps.

Another benefit of SCT-Orangerelates to eye fatigue. Visible lightin the violet and blue areas of thespectrum is not well focused by theeye. When these colors are filteredout, contrast is improved, and theeye finds it easier to see detail. Agood example of this is ambersunglasses that are used by pilotsand sportsmen to reduce haze and glare. As with all personalprotective equipment, it is theemployer’s responsibility to conductan on-site or workplace hazardassessment.

Uvex® SCT-VermilionWhile a primary need for eye

protection is often impact hazards,many work applications also includeradiation hazards including ultraviolet,infrared, and visible glare.

SCT-Vermilion (light pink) lensesare used for indoor applicationssuch as inspection where contrastmay need enhancement. Theselenses will reduce glare fromfluorescent and halogen lightingwithout compromising colorperception. These lenses can alsobe used to reduce glare in hospitaloperating rooms where nurses anddoctors are exposed to intense,bright lighting. These lenses are notrecommended for driving or for useas general purpose eyewear.

The SCT-Vermilion lenses willsharpen visual acuity and providecontrast similar to, but not asdramatic as amber lenses. Workersperforming product inspectionsunder fluorescent lighting find theselenses are ideal for detecting

defects. Examples include visualinspection of circuit boards,miniature components, andassembly work. These lenses absorb>99.9% of UVA and UVB radiationup to 400nm. As with all personalprotective equipment, it is theemployer’s responsibility to conduct an on-site or workplacehazard assessment.

Uvex® SCT-Low IRUvex has developed a companion

lens for its SCT Gray lens, calledSCT-Low IR (infrared). These lenseshave a much higher Visible LightTransmittance (VLT) for indoor workapplications. The lens is pale greenand the VLT is 80%. Uvex SCT-LowIR lenses filter 99.9% of theultraviolet radiation, and 40% of the infrared radiation that may bepresent. IR protection is equivalentto a Shade 1.2 welding lens.*

There are a number of suggesteduses for SCT-Low IR lenses. Thislens tint is ideal for indoor utilitywork where protection is requiredfrom short term electric arcs and theradiation generated when an arcaccidentally occurs. UV radiationpresent is completely absorbed bythe lens, as are low levels of IRradiation. Recognition of key colorsis not affected.

The low level IR protection alsomakes this lens a good choice forareas where transient IR or heat is

present. For example, spectacleswith SCT-Low IR lenses are a good choice for use in weldingenvironments, under weldinghelmets where primary eyeprotection is required, or forpersonnel walking through areasadjacent to welding operations. It is also a good choice inapplications where furnaces arepart of the operation becauseabsorption of IR heat energy willhelp keep the eye cooler. As with all personal protective equipment, it is the employer’s responsibility to conduct an on-site or workplacehazard assessment.

SCT-Gray

Uvex® SCT-GrayUtility workers can potentially be

exposed to the hazard of a short-term electric arc and the intenseburst of radiation that results. SCT-Gray lenses are a sunglass tint andare designed to provide broadprotection against accidental arcs.They filter 99.9% of the UVA andUVB radiation up to 400nm, 93% ofthe blue light hazard, and 85% ofthe infrared (IR) radiation present. IRprotection is equivalent a Shade 2.0welding filter.**

As a sunglass lens, SCT-Graylenses have a Visible LightTransmittance (VLT) of about 15%.This means 15% of the availablelight will pass through the lens.While providing the protectionabove, the lens tint also providestrue color recognition. This allowsthe worker to easily distinguish wire

colors and avoid accidentallyconfusing colors and crossing wires.Uvex SCT-Gray lenses meet thetransmittance and traffic signalcolor recognition requirements ofANSI Z80.3-1996, and therefore arealso suggested as general purposesunglasses for driving and otheroutdoor applications.
