Manual – Vianen UV-C System
1. Instructions:
This manual contains important security information and operating instructions. It is
important that the operators read the instruction manual carefully before operating
the Vianen UV-C System.
2. In general:
For security purposes ensure all operators are fully instructed and are familiar with the
operating manual before starting up the system as the manual contains important
information for operating and maintenance of the installation.
This manual is provided with the delivery of the equipment.
Ensure all criteria for secure operation is fully complied with before start up.
Only authorized and qualified personnel may perform installation, operation and
maintenance.
No changes are to be performed to the equipment, without prior consultation with
Vianen B.V., as this can affect the safety of the installation. Vianen B.V. will not be
held responsible for damages caused by unauthorized changes to the installation
and incorrect operation and application by the owners and operating personnel.
N.B. This manual should be accessible at all times to operating personnel.

3. The Vianen UV-C System
The Vianen UV-C System utilises a Photo Light Oxidation-technique, which produces
ozone through UV-C lamps. The ozone reduces organic substances in the air due to
the oxidation process. The lamps are mounted in a stainless steel frame, which is
installed in the hood behind the grease filters. The protein chains in the fat and
grease are broken down by the intense UV-C radiation allowing the ozone to reduce
the organic substances.
Any leftover of non-reacted ozone automatically turns into oxygen (02).
The ozone produced by the UV-C does not turn into nitrogen oxide (NOx)
Ozone is an environmental-friendly gas, existing in the nature and decomposes in the
atmosphere.
4. Installation of the Vianen UV-C System.
During installation the lamps must be protected from dirt and grease and must be
handled with clean gloves at all times.
4.1 Receiving the delivery.
The packaging of the Vianen UV-C System must be controlled for possible transport
damages. Damages are to be immediately reported to Vianen B.V. Check that the
delivery is complete and in accordance with the packaging list.
4.2 Mechanical installation
The UV-C system is to be installed such that the duct allows a reaction time of a
minimum of two seconds whilst passing through the duct. This is necessary for the
oxidation process. Control the calculation of the air velocity with the length of duct.
N.B. As the UV-C system cleans air using ozone-oxidation no other ducts are to be
connected to the UV-C duct.
4.3 Electrical installation
The electrical installations must conform to local directives.
The location of the control cabinet is designed and constructed for indoor
conditions, and must be installed in a ventilated area, with an ambient temperature
not exceeding 30° C. The control cabinet must be placed where it can be controlled
on a daily basis. A switch must be installed between the main electrical supply and
the control cabinet.

Arrow Up : - Changes values of the configuration menu
Arrow Down : - Changes values of the configuration menu
Messages : -During normal working conditions the text UV= 2,3Amps REF=0. Will
display indicating the electrical power consumption (in amps) which
is being used by the UV-C lights
Configuration menu : (authorised persons only).
a. To set the maximum and minimum levels of electrical power press the
arrow up and down
b. With the up and down arrows pressed simultaneously resets the hour
counter

Errors indicated on the display:
a. FAN-OFF : No current Amps on extraction fan
b. Check Door UVC : Service hatch for UV-C lights is open
c. Check-Filters : Grease filters not in place or complete
d. Check lamps : One or more lamps are broken
(fused - lamps have black ends)
After the system has been running for 7500 hours a warning on the display will
appear “Change Lamps” - this message will remain until 8000 hours are
reached. This is the lifetime of the lamps and the system will automatically
stop if not replaced.
Once the lamps have been replaced the hour counter needs to be reset.
Connection to external signals:
The electrical connection to the fan must be such that the lamps can only operate
when the fan is on and air is passing through the system. This is a very important to
prevent overheating.
Pressure guard for monitoring of the static pressure drop of the grease filters.
Connection of Vianen UV-C system-frames.
The cables from the UV-C system are to be connected in the control cabinet.
4.4 Protection of cables
Appropriate protection of the cables must be ensured at all times.
4.5 Protection during mechanical installation
During installation the Vianen UV-C system must be placed on a secure and flat
surface in a horizontal position. The frames are fragile and must not be subjected to
vibrations and must not be dropped.
4.6 Commissioning
a. Check all the fans are operating correctly
b. Check that there is sufficient ventilation at normal operation level.
c. Check all wiring to the distribution boxes and that they are correctly
connected to the control cabinet
d. Check that all the grease filters are in place

e. Check that the UV-C lamps are not damaged
5. Operational start-up
Preparation:
The authorised personnel must read and understand the operational instructions. The
personnel must have knowledge of security and safety regulations, and other
relevant (local) directives.
Operational and maintenance instructions:
Lamp frames
The lamps are assembled in a sturdy frame of stainless steel. The frame contains two
special transformers. Each frame has its own connecting cable, which is to be
disconnected prior to installation. Only authorized and skilled electricians may open
the electrical section of the UV-C frames.
UV-C lamps
The lamps must be clean for maximum effect and production of ozone. If not clean
fat will stick on and burn into the lamps with a reduction in the air cleaning capacity.
If necessary spray the lamps with a mild cleaning detergent with a high pH Value
(>13) then carefully wipe the lamps with a soft and damp cloth using gloves for
personal protection. Ensure personal protective clothing is used at all times during
installation and servicing of the system.
Cleaning frequency depends on the stress on the lamps. For example, when the
production in the kitchen is at a higher level than normal the cleaning frequency
must be increased.
At normal operating levels it is expected that the frequency be every second month
and subsequently higher at greater production levels. The type of cooking involved
will also influence the cleaning frequency. A maintenance schedule must be
implemented and maintained once the system has been commissioned and is in
operation.

6. Changing the UV-C lamps
WARNING
Close down the UV-C system completely before removing the grease filters or
opening the service hatches. The blue UV-C light is harmful to eyes and health.
Required tooling: Phillips screwdriver, mild detergent, water, brush or soft cloth.
The lamps are mounted in stainless steel frames and are connected by a multi
contact in the service box left or right side of the frame.
6.1 Shut down the power to the control cabinet
6.2 Remove the grease filters
6.3 Open both end panels of the stainless steel UV-C frames
6.4 Disconnect the speed clamps on the lamps
6.5 Disconnect the lamps from their contacts by removing the wiring from
the lamps and slide them out from their silicone protection rings
6.6 N.B.: The lamps are very delicate and break easily.
6.7 N.B.: New silicone protection rings must be inserted at every lamp change
6.8 Clean the lamps if necessary with a mild detergent and water and dry
the lamps
6.9 Carefully insert a new lamp and re-connect the speed clamps
6.10 Re-connect the electric wiring
6.11 Close the end panels of the stainless steel UV-C frames
6.12 Close the service hatch
6.13 Replace the grease filters.

7. Safety Warnings
UV-C lamps are harmful to human eyes. Do not look directly into the lamps If the
eyes are exposed contact a doctor immediately!
UV-C lamps must automatically switch off when the exhaust fan is switched off.
When removing grease filters the UV-C lamps switch off the lamps and exhaust fan
automatically.
Always use the protective safety clothing and glasses.
The lamps must be cleaned at regular intervals according to the maintenance
schedule.
Check the Operational counter (time) on the control cabinet on a regular basis.
The UV-C lamps have a life span of approximately 8000 hours and must be changed
before this point.
If the cooking equipment beneath the UV-C system is changed, Vianen B.V. must be
informed to reset airflow volume and velocity.
