When embarking on a project it can be tempting to choose a style you see in a glossy magazine, then discover it doesn’t suit your lifestyle. So look closely

Much as I admire minimalism and cite John Pawson as one of my favourite artists/architects, I know myself too well and know it could never (ever) work for me. A squirrel and a magpie,

I collect anything and everything. My ‘treasure’ includes scraps of paper with scribbles of interesting words, to delightful vintage tins overfl owing with seed packets, sketches and ideas for the house and garden. I love them, they ‘speak’ to me and make me tick.

I feel interiors are becoming too homogeneous, with an international blingy style that only says ‘look what I’ve got’, whereas your home can also

say ‘look who I am’. Find your style and develop your soul – turn the pages to see what makes you tick.

THE ownersProfessional couple Roger and Peter are both keen cooks who love to entertain, but the existing kitchen in their London apartment was far too small for their needs. During a complete refurbishment of the penthouse space they chose an eye-catching white kitchen with plenty of storage space.


The 40mm-deep Corian worksurfaces in Warm Grey have a bespoke ‘infinity edge’ that gives a crisp, modern finish, with the same material being carried on into the upstand/splashback

Every wall was moved and every window changed during a complete refurbishment of Roger and Peter’s London penthouse. Ashley Collins, designer at Halcyon Interiors, provided the sleek new kitchen.

What was the brief?Roger: “We wanted clean lines and a sleek look, and we particularly wanted white to keep the area looking bright. We both love to cook and we always have lots of friends coming around for dinner, so we needed space to be able to work properly and plenty of storage space. Our old kitchen didn’t have room to swing a cat and we wanted to make cooking easier for ourselves and for any visitors.”Ashley: “I was asked to design an eye-catching, functional, modern kitchen in the space, for entertaining.”

What influenced the design?Ashley: “I was initially thinking of a simple, clean look, but as soon as I saw the stair design I knew this had to be the focal point of the room. I chose an Alno Starline handle-less kitchen with simple lines so that the whole room flowed perfectly, and selected a flush-to-ceiling extractor from Westin as I did not want anything to really compete with the amazing staircase.”Roger: “We needed a low level kitchen as we have a 360° aspect over London and we wanted to maintain the view, and the staircase design did have an influence on the kitchen.”

What finishes were chosen?Ashley: “The lacquered finish on the cabinetry creates reflections in the space; while the Warm Grey Corian tops have a bespoke infinity edge detail for a sharp, crisp look. We put a channel in the worktop overhang to house LED lighting.”

What’s inside the cabinetry?Ashley: “The kitchen has lots and lots of storage, most of it in the form of drawers and pull-out larders for ease of use.”

my Wilson and Steve Bright were happy to trust Max Spenser-Morris, head of design at Design Republic, with a completely open brief to come up with something stunning for a guest bathroom in what was previously a bedroom.

“Max did a lovely bathroom at a previous house 10 years ago,” says Steve. “We loved that project and others that Design Republic have done since, as they seem to think out-of-the-box. We needed that help with our project as we wanted a really special bathroom for our new guest suite.”

The only direction the couple gave Max was that they didn’t want a bath, only a shower. “It was an open brief for me to come back to them with an idea for the space,” recalls Max. “We were looking at products from a gorgeous

Japanese import company called Biden Designs at the time, and they had some beautiful products including the handle we used for the main doors. This imparted a slight Zen feel to the design.”

The room was not without challenges, the ceiling was low, so the shower head had to be set into the ceiling, and an awkward chimney breast was absorbed into the design by using the recesses for the toilet cistern, inset wenge shelves and a hidden cabinet.Max created a bespoke wenge vanity unit to hold an elegant Gessi Goccia washbasin. “We set ourselves the brief of creating a fresh, spa feel that was also unique and individual,” he says. “As a guest bathroom, there wasn’t a need for lots of storage so we could afford to keep the design spacious. The vessel basin and Gessi Goccia tap were important as the focal point of the bathroom so we kept the space around these clean.”

Their new-build house gave Debbie and Lee Collins the chance to create a spacious, family kitchen that would suit their lifestyle, with Andy Martin, director of Wilson Fink, taking on the job of turning dreams into reality.

What was the brief?Debbie: “I’m a keen cook and I have two young children, so I wanted the room to have a family feel and the children to be able to play there instead of being shut away in a playroom. I didn’t want a kitchen that was too stark and cold, but a design that in a few years’ time would still look modern. It also needed to be easy to clean and practical.”

What was the inspiration behind the finishes?Andy: “The clients wanted to move away from the ever-fashionable beiges and taupe and make a slightly more dynamic statement.

They also wanted the colour scheme to last and to be softened with a textured wood effect.”

What was the biggest challenge?Andy: “There is a post in the middle of the room that could not be removed so the entire design had to revolve around building this in. We decided to build units around it to and make a feature of it as opposed to trying to hide it.”Debbie: “That beam was the bane of our lives, but the kitchen designer incorporated it brilliantly and now it looks like it’s meant to be there.”

Has it changed family life?Debbie: “We are always in the kitchen now. I was a bit worried at first that people would be watching me while I’m cooking, as I’m a bit of a perfectionist, but no one gets in my way and it’s so much more sociable.”

What is your favourite part of the design?Debbie: “One of my favourite touches is the antiqued mirror glass that we used to clad the beam.”

Refine your style… well chosen, well designed, well considered and well placed within the space, schemes with modest forms and lines may look straightforward and simple, but they’re deceptively sophisticated. Make the scheme your own -- clean and minimalist doesn’t mean without character, the best have interest and style.

These photographs are akin to an artform, but don’t forget someone was there ahead of the photographer, tidying

and ensuring everything was just so. To maximise minimal it does require a certain kind of person -- someone that’s

tidy with a capital T. Still keen? Well winnow down, declutter, then declutter some more, or better still, start your kitchen and everything that goes into it from scratch, so you only have the

absolute necessities -- and consider each and every thing.

Rather than adding any applied decoration use what you have to include but in a considered way, such as the repetition of cabinet doors which will make a pattern and rhythm

throughout the space. And it goes without saying handle-less cabinetry rules. As nothing will be on display invest in

excellent, well-made cabinetry, with strong hinges and drawer runners, with well thought-out internal storage solutions. Use drawers not shelves, as you can pull drawers right out to get to things at the back and they take up less space. Or

place your kitchen inside full-height cupboards, and simply slide the giant doors across to cover the workings when not in use. Aim for serene and uncluttered, not cold and sterile.

Make it a background for your life, but not one where when you’re in it you’ll feel like you’re making the place untidy.

Kitchens are for living in, so remember these words: storage, Tidy (and remember the capital T) and cleaners -- then relax and enjoy.

The hot new trend is for open-plan bathroom bedrooms, (the loo stays in a separate cubicle). So that the bathroom zone is not overly obvious it’s important to include sanitaryware that blends

Lack of clutter emphasises the line and form… everything in a minimalist space needs to be refined and edited. As there is so little in it, what is there has

to be perfect. No imperfections, no blemishes.

If you find this just too stark, instead of decoration use opposites such as matt and shiny to play off different surface textures, or add a rug or a chair to your bathroom for instant softness, but ensure it’s the same colour as the rest of your scheme -- yes even the colour needs to be pared right back to one hue. It can be tones of the same hue, such as different whites, but keep it simple to max the effect. Colour can distract, where as white is the minimalist’s dream colour, fresh yet pared

right down to emphasise line and form. It also imparts a great feeling of serenity, making a space calming and relaxing.

For inspiration see ultra minimalist architect and designer John Pawson’s work. Go as bare as you dare for maximum

effect and create an oasis of tranquillity for relaxation.

When Michael Harrison moved his family to Provence it was clear from the start that local stone would play a big role in the kitchens and bathrooms of their newly refurbished four-bedroom home – after all, Michael had a financial interest in a local limestone quarry. But it was also important to the family to have a kitchen which suited their casual, sociable lifestyle and which fitted into the warm, outdoor-living ethos of the region.

He found exactly what he was looking for when he approached senior designer Leila Conway at Mark Wilkinson Furniture. “The furniture was designed by Mark Wilkinson OBE and named Provence as it was inspired by the time he spent in the south of France,” Leila explains. “It oozes calm and relaxation – Mark says he was inspired by the scents of freshly baked bread at the boulangerie and the pace of life epitomised by older men playing boules.”ć

THE ownersEngineer Michael Harrison, his wife Patricia and their two children moved to Provence from their home in Cheshire, staying in Monaco while their property, in an upmarket gated community in the mountains near Nice, was totally renovated.


The bespoke batterie de cuisine gives a rustic, country feel to the design, as well as being thoroughly practical. The polished nickel handles in the New England style were chosen to complement the simple cabinetry, which has oak veneer interiors


THE designer“The owners of this house had an interest in a local stone quarry so the sink was carved from limestone. If you do choose worktops or sinks in softer stones such as limestone or marble, you must avoid using limescale remover on them and always use a chopping board. With care they can look beautiful for years with just an annual oiling to smarten them up; although granite is a far hardier alternative.” Leila Conway, senior designer, Mark Wilkinson Furniture

“Provence has a mild climate and this is reflected in the colourings of the kitchen,” says Leila. “In the Provençal landscape, where there are no frosts, it isn’t unusual for houses to remain unpainted year after year, giving a shabby chic beauty to the paintwork. We commissioned English trompe l’oeil artist Rosalind Robinson to apply a finish to mirror the warm, faded feel so typical in the paintwork of the region. The sunny feeling has been further warmed up by mixing in the clear lacquered oak elements.”

At the end of the kitchen island character oak has been used to great effect with the rustic dining table and stools, while the bespoke batterie de cuisine adds a touch of panache. Other bespoke pieces include the oak plate rack and the French-style extractor canopy, while the pale limestone worktops and sink give a true touch of local colour.

THE ownersGal and Tania Adir are the owners and Tania is this project’s designer. They are partners in boutique development company G&T London which focuses on the restoration and conversion of historic properties in London’s most exclusive locations.

uilt in 1836, number 58 Myddelton Square has seen Islington transformed from thriving fringe to rough inner city, then back to cosmopolitan and desirable. Now on a sought-after garden square, this generously proportioned home spent much of the last century as cramped flats and cheap offices, but has just been transformed by Tania Adir of development company G&T London, which dragged away the desks and kitchenettes and replaced them with beautifully restored period features, a strikingly modern Schüller kitchen and luxurious bathrooms.

“We wanted to create a kitchen to suit the original exposed external walls of a Georgian period terrace property, while blending elements of traditional and contemporary and ensuring functionality and exceptional quality,” says Tania. The kitchen features textural saw-cut black oak doors which contrast with the monumental 50mm slab of glossy Iranian marble which makes up the worktop.

Master ensuiteThe bathrooms were designed to reflect modern luxury hotels, but also sit happily among the restored Georgian period details such as the fully functional fireplace in the master ensuite bathroom. With the bathrooms we were inspired by boutique luxury hotels we have visited in the past and we wanted the bathrooms to be areas for pampering and relaxation,” says Tania. With this in mind, the rooms feature only the most luxurious surfaces and finishes, from stunning marble slabs to the delicate mother-of-pearl wall mosaics in the master bedroom ensuite.

While the bathrooms look perfectly at home with the Georgian architectural features, they also abound with technological innovation – the whole

house is linked by an iPad-controlled Savant system which can be used to control music, heating and lighting, while a Raychem system monitors the temperature of pipes to ensure instantaneous hot water. They are modern in outlook too: “There are twin showers and basins in the master ensuite in recognition of the requirements of today’s discerning buyer,” says Tania, “while in recognition of the requirements of busy modern couples, we designed the master suite to include two dressing rooms.”
