WHO IS TIRTHANKARA?

In Jainism, a Tirthankar :

“Fordmaker or Propagator“; also Tirthankara or Jina) is a

human being who achieves enlightenment (perfect

knowledge) through

asceticism and who then

becomes a role-model teacher

for those seeking spiritual guidance.

A Tirthankar is a special sort arihant, who establishes the fourfold religious order consisting

of monks, nuns, laymen and laywomen after achieving omniscience. After achieving

enlightenment, a Tirthankar shows others the path to enlightenment. At the end of his human life-

span, a Tirthankar achieves liberation (‘moksh’ or nirvan’), ending the cycle of infinite births and

deaths. Jains believe that exactly twenty four Tirthankars are born in each half cycle of time in

this part of the universe.

As Tirthankars direct us to enlightenment, their

statues are worshipped in Jain temples by Jains

aspiring to achieve enlightenment. Tirthankars are

not God or gods. Jainism does not believe in the

existence of God in the sense of a creator, but in godss as beings, superior to humans but,

nevertheless, not fully enlightened. Twenty-one of the Tirthakaras are said to have attained Moksha

in the Kayotsarga (standing mediation) posture; Rishabha, Nemi; and Mahavira on the padmasana

(lotus throne poisture).

The 24 Tirthankaras who achieved liberation

(‘moksha’ or nirvana’), ending the cycle of

infinite births and deaths, are considered to be the

creator of Jain religion. They are divine elements

of Jainism. They have attained all the achievement

of ultimate nature including the ultimate knowledge after making vigirous efforts.

The answer to this question can be perhaps available from the 87th stanza of

“Yashstilakchulikc” scripture written by Acharya Somdev Suri. He observes:

“There are indefinite number of Grahas (Planets)

– Nakshatras – Stars (Heavenly elements in the

sky). But their numbers are shown to be limited

by the rule of nature. In the present era of

Utsarpini time-span, there are 24 times only when

these heavenly elements are positioned in the best

location. This is a certainty. Therefore there are

only 24 Tirthankaras only not a one less not a one more.”

Why do the Jainas worship the Tirthankars?

Umaswami, a great Jaina Acharya has expressed

the object of Jain worship of Tirthankar in precise

terms in the opening verse of his renowned

exposition of the principles of reality according to

Jainism in Tattvartha sutra;

णमो अरहंताणं

णमो स ाणं

णमो आइरयाणम ्

णमो उवझायाणं

णमो लोए सवसाहूणम ्

“I bow to Lord, the promulgator of the path

liberation , the destroyer of mountains of Karmas

and the knower of the whole of reality, so that I

may realise these qualities.” The object of Jain

worship is therefore not to seek favours but to

cultivate a frame of mind to seek guidance, to

meditate on the path of Liberation as taught by the

Tirthamkars.

As noted by Dr. A.N. Upadhye,

a great Prakrit scholar of Jainism, “ By God Jainism

understands a liberated soul as well as a Tirthankar, who is the

highest spiritual ideal after which every soul can aspire;

the God is an example to

inspire and guide. Thus the basis of the Jain

conception is different from Hinduism . Though

the God is not a creator, the Jain religion neither

lacks devotional fervour nor ceremonial rituals.

Jains offer prayers to him, worship him both in

concept and in concrete , and meditate on him.

Respectful prayers are offered to the Tirthankaras,

liberated soul, preceptor, preacher and monk

because these represent various stages of the souls

spiritual progress. Such a routine keeps one

vigilant about one’s ideal warning every time that

one is to depend on oneself to destroy the Karmas. Jainism is thus a religion of self help and can be

practised by the self reliant, strong and brave.” (Jainism by Colette Caillat, Dr. A.N. Upadhye,

Bal Patil , Macmillan, 1974)

IGCSE BOARD

Today, parents have a plethora of educational boards from which to choose, to enroll their

child/ren. It is not just the SSC (Secondary School Certificate) or ICSE (Indian Certificate of

Secondary Education). Get Ahead presents a series of articles on the educational boards gaining

popularity today. This is a look at the International General Certificate of Secondary Education

(IGCSE) board.

The International General Certificate of

Secondary Education (IGCSE) is a globally

recognized qualification, taken at the Class 10

level, similar to the Class 10 examinations of the

CBSE and ICSE or the middle years Programme

of the IB.

IGCSE, formed in 1988, is a comprehensive two-

year programme, spread over Class 9 and 10, and

leads to the final examinations offered every year

in May and November.

IGCSE assessment is conducted by two UK

assessment bodies: Edexcel (also known as London Examinations) and Cambridge

International Examinations (CIE) (see below). A student who has passed IGCSE is eligible for

any +2 level qualifications, like Class 12 CBSE/

ICSE or any international pre-university

programme, like the IB Diploma, Advanced

Placement Diploma (US), and A/AS Level &

AICE (UK).

How does the IGCSE compare to other

programme like CBSE, ICSE or the

Middle Years Programme of the IB? Like other modern programme, IGCSE offers a

wider range of subjects and encourages high

academic standards through a practical approach

to teaching and learning. Assessment is not

limited to conventional written papers and they

consist of a variety of tests e.g. oral and listening

tests.

The assessment is aimed at a wide ability range of

students, with an eight-point grading scale, from

A+ to G, with A+ being the highest.

IGCSE is a balanced curriculum and a flexible

course of study.

Most subjects offer a choice between core

curriculum and extended curriculum. This gives students of all ability levels the

freedom to choose subjects that are right for them and, thereby, the opportunity to score good

grades. The core curriculum is an overview of the subject

and is suitable for students who are expected to achieve grades C to G.

The extended curriculum is, sort of, a

specialisation in that subject. It is more

challenging and designed for students who are

expected to achieve grades A+ to C.

While the syllabi and curricula of both IB MYP

and IGCSE have an international outlook, IGCSE

appears to be slightly better, in that it is tailored

for a more multi-cultural and more multi-lingual

audience.

Does the IGCSE start only in Class 9? What about

the primary years? Can a student do IGCSE after

completing his/ her earlier schooling through a

different board? Currently, IGCSE is a two-year programme

starting at the Class 9 level. A student who has done his/ her early schooling from any other board

can join the IGCSE programme at the Class 9 level.

CIE has declared the launch of its new Cambridge International Primary Programme in June this

year.

The introduction of this programme means

students will be able to study the IGCSE from

age five through age18.

What are the subjects in the IGCSE

curriculum?

There are five Subject Groups in IGCSE with several subjects to choose from, in each group:

Page 7: UTHNYNG 5th Issue

Group 1: Languages (First Language, Second

Language, Foreign Language, etc)

Group 2: Humanities and Social Sciences (Geography, English Literature, History, etc)

Group 3: Sciences (Bio, Chemistry, Physics, etc) Group 4: Maths (Maths, Additional Maths, etc)

Group 5: Creative, Technical & Vocational (Accounting, Business Studies, Computer Studies,

Music, etc) For each subject, the certificate merely indicates

the grades scored, and not pass or fail.

Five scores of 'C' or higher indicates a students

readiness to pursue +2 level qualifications, like

the Class 12 CBSE, IB Diploma, Advanced

Placement Diploma (US), etc.

What is the International Certificate of

Education (ICE) that is awarded to

some IGCSE students?

The ICE is more prestigious than the standard IGCSE.

Instead of the five papers needed to obtain the IGCSE, if a student attempts and passes seven or

more papers, s/he is awarded the ICE. The seven subjects must be as follows:

Two subjects from the language group

One from each of the other four groups

One more from any of the five groups

Why should I select IGCSE for my

child? 1. IGCSE is one of the most sought-after and

recognised qualifications in the world. It develops

and encourages vital educational skills, including

oral skills, investigative skills, problem solving,

team work, recall of knowledge, and initiative.

2. The IGCSE programme has worldwide status

and credibility. In India [ Images ], the course is

delivered in over 130 schools with the number

expected to touch 600 by 2008. It is recognised by

the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) as being at par with CBSE, ICSE, etc.

Worldwide, it is delivered in schools in over 140 countries and is recognised by colleges and

universities everywhere, more so in the UK and

other Commonwealth countries.

3. The IGCSE curriculum is balanced and lends an

international perspective to studies. It also takes

account of differing abilities of students.

4. IGCSE students can take advantage of the

Cambridge Checkpoint, a diagnostic service comprising of standardised tests, that pin-points a

student's strengths and weaknesses in key curriculum areas.

What are Edexcel and CIE? Edexcel is the UK's largest academic

qualifications awarding body.

It was formed in 1996 by the merger of two well-

respected bodies, BTEC (the Business &

Technology Education Council), and ULEAC (the

University of London Examinations and

Assessment Council).

In 2003, Edexcel merged with the education giant,

Pearson PLC, to set up a new company called

Edexcel Limited, which is 75% owned by Pearson

and 25% by the Edexcel Foundation.

CIE is the international division of University of

Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate

(UCLES).

UCLES is another UK-based academic

qualifications awarding body, known for its

professional, rigorous and high standard assessments.

UCLES is a department of the University of Cambridge, which was formed in the year 1207,

and is one of the oldest and most reputed universities in the world.

What is a Cambridge International

Centre? What is an Edexcel Centre or a

London Examinations Centre? Schools that are accredited to Edexcel or CIE for

the conduct of the IGCSE programme are known

as Edexcel Centres or Cambridge International

Centres.

From parents' or students' perspective, there is

little difference between the two. Some schools are accredited to Edexcel and some

to CIE. For example, DPS International in Delhi [ Images ] is an Edexcel IGCSE centre, while the

Pathways World School in Gurgaon is a CIE IGCSE centre.

Then there are some like Calcutta International School in Kolkata [ Images ] and British School in

Delhi, which are centres of both Edexcel and CIE. More than the assessment body, parents need to

think about which school is better for their child.

Diwali is around the corner and decorating the diyas for lighting

up the occasion is one fun activity to do. Many diyas are lit in and

around the house and a very time consuming diya decoration for

close to a hundred diyas, wouldn’t be the best option. So here are

a few diya decoration ideas which can be done real quick to add

an extra sparkle to your festive season.

Glimpse of the Result:

For this you will need:

1. Diyas

2. Acrylic colors (preferably metallic)

3. Kundan/Rhine stones 4. Glue

5. Sparkle glue

How to decorate Diyas:

Step 1:

Take a diya (preferably a new one, mine was an old one which underwent some

cleaning!) and remove any dust or impurities. The traditional diya made out of mud

and clay is always the best.

Step 2:

Paint two coats of an acrylic color of choice and allow the coats to dry.

Step 3:

Using sparkle glue, make a simple pattern either in the inside or/and on the edges as per your design.

Allow the sparkle glue to dry.

Page 9: UTHNYNG 5th Issue

Step 4: Paste rhine stones using white glue or any other firm adhesive.

Once the stones are glued on firmly, you can use a little sparkle glue to

enhance the design if needed.

A simple diya decoration is done. You can experiment with different

colors and designs as per your whims and fancies.

Once you start lighting the diyas, there could be slight discoloration of the decoration, but nothing more. The

time spent on the decoration is still worth it!

KARNALA is 61 kms South of Mumbai,

on the Mumbai-Goa highway. It is about 10 km from Panvel. At a height of 445 mts above sea

level, Karnala is known for the thumb shaped pinnacle on top and the bird sanctuary around.

The sanctuary is home to 147 species of resident

and 37 species of migratory birds who visit the sanctuary during winters. Among the birds seen

here are paradise fly catcher, magpie robin, malabar whistling trush, racket-tailed drongo,

golden backed woodpecker, crested serpent eagle

etc. Two rare birds i.e. Ashy Minimet and Spotted

heart woodpeckers have been sighted here.

Karnala

pinnacle is a

favourite

spot for

professional

mountain

climbers.

Best time to visit for bird watching is from October to April. However if one wants to enjoy

the greenery, it has to be during the monsoons.

History The Karnala fort was built during

the 12th century. Karnala was of

strategic

importance

because of its

command of the

highroad

between Bhor

Ghat and the rivers of Panvel and Apta, watching

the trade route. Between 1248 and 1318, it was

under DevgYada. From 1318 to 1347, it was

under Daulatabad Muslim rulers. Subsequently it

was with the Gujarat rulers, with the help of

Portuguese. It changed hands many times between

Shivaji, Mughals and Peshwas. It 1803, it came under Bhaji Rao and in 1819, Britishers took

control of the fort.

Popular with avid bird-watchers and trekkers,

Karnala Bird Sanctuary lies about 60 km from Mumbai

and 10 km from Panvel. The

sanctuary is also famous for the 11th century fort

of the same name.

Straddling the Mumbai-Goa highway, the

sanctuary is quite small as it is spread over 12.11

sq km in Raigad district of Maharashtra. Home to

over 150 species of resident and 37 species of migratory birds, three rare birds – Ashy Minivet,

Three-toed kingfisher and Malabar Trogon – have also been sighted at the park.

Nestled in the Sahyadri hills, Karnala is popular as

picnic spot and as a trekkers paradise. Categorized as an easy climb, some stretches of the trail can

get a tad difficult. However, Karnala is good place

to start trekking.

The sanctuary comprises of moist deciduous

forest. The forest department has made efforts to

educate the visitors by tagging several trees inside

the forest. Principally a bird sanctuary, other

forms wildlife too exists. Wild boar, common

langur and rhesus monkeys are common.

There are four nature trails

in the sanctuary. Though

safe, it is advisable to hire

local youths as guides for the long trails.

The trail leading to Karnala fort, also called Funnel

Hill, is most popular. The 125-feet high basalt pillar

at the centre of the fort, sticks out like a thumb which earned it the

sobriquet of Karnala Thumbs up point. It was a

favourite spot for rock climbing. However, the

presence of several bee hives have made it risky

and no one attempts it now.

Karnala has two

distinct seasons

for bird-

watching.

Monsoon is the

best season to

spot the

Malabar whistling thrush, the magpie robin and the

paradise flycatcher. Winter is the best time to spot migratory birds. The blue throat, the black headed

cuckoo-shrike, the blue-headed rock-thrush, blackbird and the red breasted flycatcher flock to

the sanctuary during winter.

Page 11: UTHNYNG 5th Issue

WHERE TO STAY

Karnala has a guest house run by the forest

department located close to the sanctuary gate. A

day is more than enough to discover Karnala.

Beides there are a lot of resorts surrounding

Karnala Bird Sanctuary in case you are planning

to spend a weekend there.

WHERE TO EAT There are no options to eat inside the park.

Visitors generally carry food and water. Kamat hotels and several other dhabas are located at a

close distance from the sanctuary gate.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Karnala can be visited all through the year. Avoid

the sanctuary during heavy rains as the trails tend

to get slippery. However, visiting the sanctuary

especially the trek to the fort during monsoon can

be an unforgettable experience. The entire area is

carpeted in green and one can see mists gently by

below the fort. October to April is the best time to

visit.

HOW TO REACH

By Road: Karnala is situated on the national

highway 17 also called the Mumbai-Goa highway. State-run buses going towards Pen, Alibag,

Murud, etc. stop at the sanctuary gate. However, don’t forget to check with the bus conductor as all

buses don’t stop at the sanctuary. Share auto-rickshaws which ply regularly from

Panvel to surrounding villages is also another means to reach Karnala.

Taxis, from Mumbai, Navi Mumbai or Thane, can

be hired to reach Karnala.

By Train: Panvel, the nearest railhead, is a major

station on the busy line between Mumbai and

Roha and also on the Mumbai suburban line.

Auto-rickshaws and taxis can be hired from the

station to reach the sanctuary, 12 km away.

SEVEN STEPS TO A HEALTHY

HEART IN YOUR 30s

When you enter your 30s, life gets more and more

stressful and complicated. Your career has gained

momentum, perhaps you're married and have

children, a mortgage, some other loans. Before

you know it, stress adds up and raises the risk of

heart problems. There are many ways to avoid the

risk of heart problems at this age and enjoy your

life. Practice these seven steps to live life without

heart problems just like you lived at your 20s.

Getting away from the

office or family tensions

is not easy, but try to

change how you handle

them. The more you relax,

the more easily your body

will be able to regulate stress levels. Research

suggests that exercise, in any form, is the best way

to de-stress and relax. Select something you enjoy

and stick to it.

Exercise regularly

whether to deal with stress

or to just get fitter. It's a

smart move to have a

healthy heart in your 30s.

Even a 15-30 minutes

exercise session, every

day, will be beneficial for your heart, and will also

prevent you from putting on extra weight and

thereby compounding any potential health

ailments.

Eat healthy. Try and avoid

those unhealthy food items

during the weekend with your

friends and family. These unhealthy foods can add

up to your calorie and cholesterol levels and

increase the risk of heart problems. Instead opt for

a diet full of protein, omega 3 or healthy food

restaurants like Gostana.

Sleep well. Sleeping less

than five hours a day, can

increase the risk of stroke

or cardiac arrest. Make

sure you sleep well,

maintain a daily bed time and wake up time and

avoid smoking or consuming alcohol in excess, or

heavy food before going to sleep.

Breakfast is

essential. Never

skip your breakfast.

It is indeed very

important to eat a

healthy and

nutritious breakfast. A good breakfast gives your

body that much needed fuel to get active and stay

fit.

Birth control needs some revamping. You

should reconsider using contraceptives like pills

and the patch, if you have high blood pressure or a

family history of heart disease. According to Dr.

Goldberg, using these may worsen the case if you

have any heart ailments. Hence, talk to your

gynecologist before trying any contraceptives

Limit sugar and salt intake. Intake of sugar can

raise your cholesterol and triglycerides level and

salt can cause high blood pressure. You don’t

have to completely avoid salt and sugar but limit

your daily intake to avoid heart problems. Cut off

from indulgences in cakes, pastries and creamy

food items.

YOU CAN PREVENT

DENGUE FEVER

A true romantic whose films shaped ideas about

love for generations of Indians, Yash Chopra died

of Dengue a couple of days back. 80-year-old

Yash Chopra was called 'the maker of dreams',

and he taught a generation to fall in love the

exaggerated way, with sunflower fields, Swiss

locations and larger than life scenes. He created

magic on screen, something his films' fans loved

as it took them away from their monotonous lives.

While directing his last romantic film Jab Tak hai

Jaan, Yash Chopra was bitten by a dengue

infected mosquito resulting in high fever,

headache, body pain and rash on the body.

Even though Yash Chopra was administered in

one of Mumbai's best hospital and was under the

supervision of the best doctors, he lost the battle

in a matter of days. According to Dr Prakash

Jiandani, who treated Chopra, " Dengue treatment

should ideally start as soon as possible. However

in Chopra's case, 48 hours had already passed at

the time he was admitted to the hospital." So

chances of his survival , at a critical stage, and

given his age, were slim.

Till date, there are no vaccines that can prevent

you from the dengue virus. But there are ways to

prevent mosquitoes from breeding and personal

care can also avert the dengue fever.

If an aedes mosquito is infected with any four of

the dengue virus types, you will experience

dengue symptoms anywhere between 3-14 days.

Life can be saved on timely diagnoses, but severe

dengue can lead to deadly complications.

Since treatment for dengue is scarce it is

important to do everything to prevent dengue

fever. Here are some important steps you can

follow:

Inform your local

municipal committee

to disinfect your area

with insecticide.

The basic step is to

empty out flower

pots to avoid breeding of mosquitoes.

Clear out leaves and stagnant water in your area, it

is a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Clearing stagnant water from coolers is also

important.

If you have any open manhole, gutters or drains it

is important to cover these openings.

Use mosquito repellents and mosquito nets.

Dengue fever is an epidemic associated with

tropical countries and India is currently fighting

its onslaught as it spreads across Karnatka,

Bengal, Delhi, and now Mumbai. With Yash

Chopra’s death, will the officials finally wake up

to this deadly virus?

WHAT DOES 2013 HAVE

IN STORE FOR US

On December 21, 2012, we are supposed to see the end of

the world. I'm thinking that won't happen, and I hope it won't,

since I enjoy being alive, writing on the internet, and driving

fast cars. Plus, there's a lot to look forward to in 2013 that I

don't want to miss.

A few days after the supposed end of days, as we're opening

up Christmas presents, happy to be alive on the brink of a

new year, we will be one step closer to the greatest

technological revolution mankind has ever experienced.

Although we never truly know for sure what technology the

future will bring us, we've got a pretty good idea for what's in

store for us next year. 2013 may not be the year man and

machine become one but there will certainly be plenty of new

gadgets for us to play with.

MIT's Folding Electric Car to be released in 2013

Source: Hiroko

Hiroko - MIT's Folding Car

The Massachusetts Institution of Technology (MIT) has their

sights set on being the catalyst for finally pushing the electric

automobile revolution over the edge. In 2013, the Hinoko

(meaning "urban car," pictured above) will be released to the

masses across Europe (With a small few areas in the U.S.),

making the Smart Car look even more ridiculous than it

already does with its sleek design and new age features.

One of the best characteristics of the Hiroko is that it is

incredibly easy to park in small spaces, with its ability to fit in

one third of a parking space after being "folded" up. Yes,

that's right, three of these things fit into one regular old

parking space. Since European cities are known to be rather

crowded, this will be a welcomed feature. The initial plan is

for city governments to run a program similar to ZipCar,

promoting the use of the Hiroko.

The downside? A 75 mile range, so don't go thinking you can

start a new Hiroko Taxi service. You will fail miserably.

Memristor Technology

The basic message of Moore’s law tells us that

advancements in technology will cause computer chip

performance to double every two years. So far this has held

true; and if it continues, we will run face first into a brick wall

somewhere around 2020 due to simple physical limitations.

Memristors are the answer. In their current form, a resistor is

a passive component with a set resistance value.

Memristors, on the other hand, have the ability to change

their resistance based on the direction of current running

through them. In addition to that, you can power down a

device using memristors, and they will remember their last

state when powered back on. This is expected to completely

eliminate boot times from computer devices, which will in

turn allow us to power them down on a regular basis,

drastically reducing power usage and increasing battery life.

This technology is said to be capable of neural net

processing, allowing it to mimic the human brain. Taken

further, scientists believe that human skin and blood can be

used as memristors. While this has some great

implications…it also may be cause for fear…

Smart Glasses

I’ve built a love/hate relationship with Google over the years.

I remember the day when “Google” was nothing but a single

page with a logo and a text box. Now we’ve got Google mail,

a Google social network, Google phones and tablets loaded

with the Google operating system. What is the logical next

step? Google Goggles of course. Tell me you didn’t

see that one coming. (Ok, I didn’t.)

Google’s new line of smart specs are going to put a little

screen right in front of your eyes as you walk around going

about your life. This screen will present to you an augmented

reality overlay as you view the world around you. The Google

Goggles are reported to have built in 4G with GPS

technology, a camera, and a Bluetooth connection to

Android based phones.

Smart Skin Phones

Samsung has filed a patent for smart device-skin which will

supposedly be able to take any digital image, and display

that image across the skin of the device. The patent

describes a layer of film that wraps the phone, covering the

entire phone except the sockets, the camera, and the

screen. Little else is known about this technology (other than

it’s awesome), but it is described as a possible feature for an

upcoming phone, as well as being available as an accessory

to fit onto most other devices. While little information has

been released to the public, including a release date, we do

know of another upcoming Samsung device that just might

be the aforementioned phone….

Us techno-geeks love giving new devices complicated, high-

tech names. This provides an aura of mystery and

excitement. Our next highly anticipated device is known as…

Bendy Screen Smartphone

Yes, the bendy screen smartphone. For those of you who

are technologically illiterate, a bendy screen smartphone is a

smartphone touting a screen that we can bend! Yep. Who

doesn’t want to bend and twist their phone into silly shapes

sometimes? It's the best way to let out your anger, other than

just throwing the thing against a wall.

Using Samsung’s already demoed OLED display technology,

we can be expecting a new phone model that will allow us to

bend it, roll it up, and hit it with a hammer. (YES!) We already

have the specs for this phone as well. The phone debuted as

the “Galaxy Skin” (wait..did that say…skin?) features a high-

res 800×480 AMOLED screen, 8mp camera and 1Gb of

RAM as well as a 1.2GHz processor.

Don’t be surprised to see bendy screen tablets released

shortly after.

Xbox 720

There are rumors everywhere about the new Xbox system: it

won’t have an optical drive, all games will be downloaded

digitally, it’s called the Xbox Loop, it’s called the

Durango...and the list goes on. There are a few reliable

rumors, however. The graphics are certainly being done by

AMD, who claim that the graphic detail will be on the same

level of Avatar. We can also certainly believe that the system

is going to be released at E3 in 2013, as several companies

working on the project have claimed.

Basis Band

We’ve all seen heart rate monitors, pedometers, and the like.

Soon, we'll have something even more advanced and useful

called the Basis Band. The Basis Band is a wrist watch style

monitor that can monitor virtually everything your body does.

It automatically detects your activities and keeps track of

things such as calories burned, heart rate, sleeping

patterns, and other physical activities. I’ve never been a

huge fan of health monitors in the past, but a device that can

monitor my sleep patterns on top of everything else may be

just what I need.

Fujitsu Lifebook 2013

Ok so you’re the guy who leaves home with a digital camera

strung around his neck, a backpack to carry his laptop, a

tablet in his briefcase, and a phone in his pocket? Well,

you’re just weird. That said, Fujitsu has the answer for

you…weird folk.

The Fujitsu Lifebook, coming in 2013, combines all of these

fancy pieces of technology into one. Ditch everything else,

keep the laptop backpack. Need a camera? Detach the

laptop’s camera to be used as a handheld digital camera.

Tablet? Open it up and pull that out as well. Put it back in

and the tablet immediately displays itself as a touch-screen

keyboard for the laptop. There is even a spot where you can

attach and remove a special cell phone, which I imagine acts

as the cellular modem for the laptop when attached. (Don’t

be surprised if this allows you to make video phone calls

from the laptop as well.)

The price is undetermined, but don’t expect it to be cheap.

When people use the term "day trading", they mean the act of buying and selling a stock within the

same day. Day traders seek to make profits by leveraging large amounts of capital to take advantage of small price movements in highly liquid stocks or indexes. Here we look at some common day trading strategies that can be used by retail traders.

Tutorial: An Introduction To Technical Analysis

Entry Strategies

Certain stocks are ideal candidates for day trading. A typical day trader looks for two things in a stock:

liquidity and volatility. Liquidity allows you to enter and exit a stock at a good price (i.e. tight spreads and low slippage). Volatility is simply a measure of the expected daily price range - the

range in which a day trader operates. More volatility means greater profit or loss.

Once you know what kinds of stocks you are looking for, you need to learn how to identify possible

entry points. There are three tools you can use to do this:

• Intraday Candlestick Charts - Candles provide a raw analysis of price action.

• Level II Quotes/ECN - Level II and ECN provide a look at orders as they happen. • Real-Time News Service - News moves stocks. This tells you when news comes out.

We will look at the intraday candlestick charts and focus on the following three factors:

• Candlestick Patterns - Engulfings and dojis

• Technical Analysis - Trendlines and triangles • Volume - Increasing or decreasing volume

There are many candlestick setups that we can look for to find an entry point. If properly used, the

doji reversal pattern (highlighted in yellow in Figure 1) is one of the most reliable ones.

Figure 1: Looking at candlesticks - the highlighted doji signals a

reversal.

Typically, we will look for a pattern like this with several confirmations:

• First, we look for a volume spike, which will show us whether traders are supporting the price at

this level. Note that this can be either on the doji candle, or on the candles immediately

following it. • Second, we look for prior support at this price level. For example, the prior low of day (LOD) or

high of day (HOD).

• Finally, we look at the Level II situation, which will show us all the open orders and order sizes.

If we follow these three steps, we can determine whether the doji is likely to produce an actual turnaround, and we can take a position if the conditions are favorable. Typically, entry points are found

using a combination of these three tools. (For more see the Charting Section of the Forex

Walkthrough.)

Page 17: UTHNYNG 5th Issue

Finding a Target

Identifying a price target will depend largely on your trading style. Here is a brief overview of some common day trading strategies:

Strategy Description

Scalping Scalping is one of the most popular strategies, which involves selling almost immediately

after a trade becomes profitable. Here the price target is obviously just after profitability is

attained.

Fading Fading involves shorting stocks after rapid moves upwards. This is based on the assumption

that (1) they are overbought, (2) early buyers are ready to begin taking profits and (3)

existing buyers may be scared out. Although risky, this strategy can be extremely

rewarding. Here the price target is when buyers begin stepping in again.

Daily Pivots This strategy involves profiting from a stock's daily volatility. This is done by attempting to buy at the low of the day (LOD) and sell at the high of the day (HOD). Here the price target is simply at the next sign of a

reversal, using the same patterns as above.

Momentum This strategy usually involves trading on news releases or finding strong trending moves supported by high volume. One type of momentum

trader will buy on news releases and ride a trend until it exhibits signs of reversal. The other type will fade the price surge. Here the price target is when volume begins to decrease and bearish candles start appearing.

You can see that, although the entries in day trading strategies typically rely on the same tools used in normal trading, the exits are where the differences occur. In most cases, however, you will be looking

to exit when there is decreased interest in the stock (indicated by the Level II/ECN and volume). (For

further reading, see Introduction To Types Of Trading: Momentum Traders and Introduction To Types Of Trading: Scalpers.)

Determining a Stop-Loss

When you trade on margin, you are far more vulnerable to sharp price movements than regular

traders. Therefore, using stop-losses is crucial when day trading. One strategy is to set two stop losses:

1. A physical stop-loss order placed at a certain price level that suits your risk tolerance. Essentially, this is the most you want to lose.

2. A mental stop-loss set at the point where your entry criteria are violated. This means that if the

trade makes an unexpected turn, you'll immediately exit your position.

Retail day traders usually also have another rule: set a maximum loss per day that you can afford

(both financially and mentally) to withstand. Whenever you hit this point, take the rest of the day off. Inexperienced traders often feel the need to make up losses before the day is over and end up taking

unnecessary risks as a result. (To learn more, see The Stop-Loss Order - Make Sure You Use It.)

Evaluating and Tweaking Performance Many people get into day trading expecting to make triple digit returns every year with minimal effort. In reality, many day traders lose money. However, by using a well-defined strategy that you are

comfortable trading, you can improve your chances of beating the odds.

How do you evaluate performance? Most day traders evaluate performance not so much by a

percentage of gain or loss, but rather by how closely they adhere to their individual strategies. In fact,

it is far more important to follow your strategy closely than to try to chase profits. By keeping this mindset, you make it easier to identify where problems exist and how to solve them.

The Bottom Line Day trading is a difficult skill to master. As a result, many of those who try it fail. But the techniques

described above can help you create a profitable strategy and, with enough practice and consistent

performance evaluation, you can greatly improve your chances of beating the odds.

YASH CHOPRA a man who redefined

romance in Hindi

cinema almost every

time he made a film,

Yash Chopra might be

synonymous with the

genre but to think of him as the mere Pasha of

Romance would be incorrect. The late king of

romance might have been a die-hard romantic but

there was a time when his characters weren’t

limited to prancing in the Swiss Alps or walking

Zurich’s cobbled streets. Years before he

instructed us to never give up the search for that unknown someone special made just for you,

Chopra was the very change that defined commercial Hindi cinema.

Unlike the designer love stories that would be

forever associated with his name, Chopra’s first

few films were anything but escapist. The legendary BR Chopra’s younger brother, Yash

Chopra’s first film Dhool Ka Phool (1959) might have had romance as a stepping stone, but the film

dealt with the social prejudice that compel a young woman to abandon her child born out of

wedlock.Today, the film might largely be recalled for academic reasons of being Yash Chopra’s

debut but things like the brilliant Sahir Ludhianvi song Tu Hindu Banega Na Musalmaan

Banega still stir up emotions.

His next

film Dharamputra

(1961) was about

communal disharmony in

turbulent times, but it wasn’t till

his 1965 smash hit Waqt that Chopra truly announced his arrival. There are many firsts

attached with Yash Chopra but one rarely

attributes the birth of the multi-starers to him. The

tale of a man who loses his three sons only to find

them later, the stylized Waqtwas a clean break

from Chopra’s previous films and also sowed the

seeds of the ‘lost and found’ formula that was to

be later used to the hilt by Manmohan Desai.

Replete with great songs (Aye Meri Zoharajabeen,

Aage Bhi Jaane Na Tu), uber cool one-liners (Yeh

chaaku hai, lag jaye to khoon nikal aata

hai or Jinke khud ke ghar sheeshe ke ho voh

dusron ke ghar pe patthar nahin fenka karte), and

suave villains like Chinoy Seth-Waqt presented Hindi cinema with a perfect template of action,

drama, romance and great tunes that still gets the

job done. The success of Waqt made Chopra the

great new hope of Hindi cinema and he kept up

the promise.

What made Yash

Chopra stand out

from the others was that from his

first film he never allowed the so-

called rules of Hindi cinema to confine him. Even if his films

had a typical formula, his execution would ensure that they escape the trappings. In Aadmi Aur

Insaan(1969) he gave us the anti-hero who wasn’t

apologetic for being rich or even bending the rules

and would provide the platform for the Angry

Young Man of the 1970s; in Itefaq (1969) he

experimented with one location and no songs, and

with Daag (1973) he boldly made bigamy

acceptable in mainstream cinema.

If Daag allowed him to free himself from any

possible shackles that Hindi cinema might impose

on a filmmaker, with Deewar (1975) he changed

the rules forever. Breaking a lot of trappings of

popular cinema, Deewar was an instant classic

and continues to stand the test of time. All through the 1970’s Chopra would return to this simmering

rage with films likeTrishul (1978) and Kaala

Patthar (1979). Even the brief romantic interlude

in between this trilogy, Kabhie-Kabhie (1976), a film that revealed the soft and romantic side of

Chopra, had at its center a variation of the angry young man.

It’s ironical that the

films that associated

the image of

cinematic romance

with Yash Chopra

were his biggest box-

office failures.

With Silsila (1981) Yash Chopra introduced us to

the women in white, the tulip beds of Holland, the

love songs and eternal search for the perfect

partner but the film that created the guise of the

king of romance was rejected by the audiences. If

the rumored real life reel portrayal of the Amitabh Bachchan-Jaya Bhaduri-Rekha triangle didn’t gel

with the audiences, the Mills & Boon inspired May-October romance of Lamhe (1991) was also

lost on them. But the image that Silsila created only became more eminent with Lamhe with a

little help from Chandni (1989), Dil To Pagal

Hai(1997) and Veer-Zaara (2004) to such an

extent that an entire generation conceivably

Page 19: UTHNYNG 5th Issue

believes that there isn’t anything more than sarees

and Switzerland to Yash Chopra!

On the eve of Darr’s (1993) release in 1993, Yash

Chopra said in an interview that he’d like to die

with his boots on. In a few weeks Chopra’s final

film, Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012) will release and the

title of his swansong says it all- much like the films he made, Yash Chopra left script that life

gave him better than when he found it. Better known as the king of romance in Bollywood,

Yash Chopra has passed away. The filmmaker was admitted to the Lilavati hospital in Mumbai

on October 13, 2012, he was suffering from dengue. He passed away on October 21. He was

80-year-old. The news came as a surprise for all

his fans and the film industry as well. He is

survived by his wife Pamela and two sons, Aditya

and Uday.

Yash Chopra turned 80 on September 27 and

during an interview with Shah Rukh Khan he

announced that ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ will be his last

film as a director. The filmmaker, who started his

journey with ‘Dhool Ka Phool’ in 1959, helped

many actors in making their place in Bollywood.

From Amitabh Bachchan to Shah Rukh Khan,

Yash Chopra gave a distinct identity to all his

actors. Here are the most iconic characters Yash Chopra created...

The angry young man Vijay of

‘Deewar’: The film established

Amitabh Bachchan as the

angry young man

of Bollywood.

Right from Amitabh’s stylish look to his ‘Aaj

khush to bahut hoge tum’ dialogue, the film

changed his image in the film industry. The movie

did exceptionally well at the box office too and

won seven Filmfare awards. Thanks to ‘Deewar’,

Vijay became Amitabh’s most popular screen

name.

‘Noorie’: Yash Chopra

had a special connection

with Kashmir. His love

for the picturesque valley was evident from

his films. Poonam Dhillon played a

Kashmiri girl in 1979 film ‘Noorie’. It is undoubtedly one of the most

successful films of her career. ‘Chandni’: Sridevi, is best known for Yash

Chopra’s romantic film ‘Chandni’. She was cast

opposite Rishi Kapoor and

Vinod Khanna in the film.

Be it the ‘Mere hathon me

nau nau choodiyan’ song

or the honeymoon dream

sequence, Sridevi got a

chance to prove her mettle as an actress with the film. Her character was so beautifully crafted that

the film looks interesting even now. Ki Ki Ki Kiran from ‘Darr’: More than Juhi

Chawla who was actually named Kiran in the film, Shah Rukh

Khan became famous for this

dialogue. Though

Shah Rukh played a

negative character

in this psychological

thriller, the film really changed his career graph.

Raj Malhotra of ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le

Jayenge’: Thanks to Yash Chopra, Shah Rukh

Khan and Kajol are

still called one of the

best on screen couples

in Bollywood. After

‘Dilwale Dulhania Le

Jayenge’, the name Raj Malhotra has

become synonymous with SRK. No wonder he was named Raj in many other films after DDLJ.

Narayan Shankar of ‘Mohabbatein’: “Parampara, pratishtha aur anushasan, yeh is Gurukul ke teen

stambh hain.” When Amitabh Bachchan

was facing a tough

time in Bollywood, it

was Yash Chopra

who brought him

back as Narayan

Shankar. It worked for the film as well as the

actor. Yash Chopra and Amitabh shared a very

close bond. He was last spotted at Big B’s 70th

birthday bash.

Veer Pratap Singh of ‘Veer-Zara’: Probably Shah

Rukh Khan will miss Yash Chopra the most. List

of their successful films

together is long. Shah Rukh Khan was unbeatable as an

Air Force officer in ‘Veer-Zara’. In Bollywood, nobody

can narrate a love story so simply as Yash Chopra used to. “Jab bhi apko kisi

dost ki zurart pade, toh yaad rakhiye, sarhad paar ek shaks hai jo aapke lie apni jaan bhi de dega.”

Page 20: UTHNYNG 5th Issue

Karan Johar is back to school, 14 years

after Kuch Kuch Hota Haimade him a Bollywood

top draw. Candyfloss rules again, designer hunks

and PYTs preen and pose, and if this film was

made in 4D you could probably smell the

bubblegum flavour all along.

Alia Bhatt, Siddharth Malhotra and Varun

Dhawan- Bollywood's latest babe and babas-

have also been amply touted as the next big things

during the film's run up to release. If Karan was

out to create a package that wholly pushes the

GenNow tempo, Student Of The Year (SOTY for

the cool effect) has little USP beyond its pretty

cast.

Rensil D'Silva's

screenplay appears

to be focussed on

creating individual

scenes that let the

young stars act

cutesy cool, never mind what high-school emotion

is being played out. A functional plot gets going

with typical adolescent emotions. Love,

heartbreak, peer pressure, classroom stress and

buddy bonding are given token space- as much as

is needed to keep the feel-good tempo up and

running.

Look at the casting of

two guys and a girl and

you know the script

will sooner or later

veer into familiar love

triangle terrain. But

K.Jo must have been

aware a simple triangle tangle won’t work in

Bollywood anymore. Considerable runtime sets

up a rivalry between the two heroes before they

become friends.

The heroes, Abhimanyu (Siddharth Malhotra) and

Rohan (Varun Dhawan), are chalk and cheese.

Abhi is your boy next door with big dreams- face

of what the campus calls the 'Bata gang', typifying

middle-class vibes. Varun, son of Indiaâ ™s

biggest tycoon (Ram Kapoor), leads the 'Tata

types' in campus.

Class divide,

however, hardly

attracts significance

in such a designer

set-up. So, Abhi

and Ro become

friends after an early tiff.

To stuff around two and half hours with fluff, you

need a spot of mush of course. Varun's girlfriend

Shanaya (Alia Bhatt) is drawn towards Abhi,

opening up a conflict that escalates as the school

gears up for the annual Student of the Year

contest. Itâ ™s a ridiculous contest that Dean

Yoginder Vashisht (Rishi Kapoor) touts as a

three-way test of academics (students unravelling

riddles Da Vinci Code-style), arts (dancing to

remixed Disco Deewane beats) and athletics(boys

and girls pitted together in swimming, biking and

running competitions).

Strange, but you don't

mind the film despite

its unapologetic

brainlessness. The key

lies in Karan's

storytelling. For all its

pulp packaging, SOTY doesn't have a single dull

moment. The greenhorn trio are a treat to watch

too, primary reasons why you'll love the film.

Karan also adds the right props to grab eyeballs-

Rishi Kapoor's Dean Vashisht gets a gay spin and

the veteran pulls it off with comical restraint.

Kajol and Boman Irani get delightful cameos.

They all fit fine into Planet Picture Perfect, as

only K.Jo creates it.
