UWS April Member Meeting
RECAP Lindey Carter
It was an evening of delight watching
Lindey Carter as she worked on a
very non-traditional painting surface
It was also gratifying to see how that
kind of watercolor painting can work
for the experienced hand Who ever
heard of painting with watercolor on
an acrylic primed surface Yet she
showed off the virtues of it very well
Lindey began her presentation with a
history of her beginnings as a young
girl in a large family trying to find her
place and discovering a way to deal
with the energy and chaos by
retreating as best she could into her
own world of drawing and
watercolor She shared a little about
the spiritual underpinnings that were
behind her skills and talent After
she married Lindey received her
post high school education at Weber
State and her degree from the
University of Utah She and her
husband have four children She
paints out of her home
Lindey uses threads of thought and
feeling that she gains from literature
Often what she is striving for is a
degree of balance and simplicity in
her watercolor paintings
Lindey calls herself a ldquobinge painterrdquo
In anticipation of an upcoming show
she will bring out the supplies and
basically take over the kitchen and
dining room She produces several
paintings at a time over a couple of
weeks to a month During that time
the family eats out or fixes their own
meals
While many who study Lindeyrsquos work
might say there is an Asian
influence itrsquos all really just her
finding ways to express what she
feels Any direct connection to Asian
or oriental influence is purely
coincidental

The Utah Watercolor
Society needs
volunteers like you
canrsquot help myselfrdquo Or ldquoI would be
incomplete if painting were not in my liferdquo
As you consider the how what and why of
your own painting what answers do you
come up with
This is my last Presidentrsquos Message and I
thank you for taking the time to read it Itrsquos
been a wonderful journey with you all See
you at our next meeting
When I first joined UWS-CVC I was mainly
interested in learning the techniques of
watercolor My previous efforts had been less
than successful My colors were washed out or
else I tried to use such thick paint that it must
have seemed I was thinking of oil paint (my
first love in painting) At any rate in UWS I was
delighted with all the opportunities to learn
technique demonstrations workshops and
instructional videos All good Essentially the
ldquohowrdquo of watercolor painting
But there are other and I think deeper considerations Nita Engle in her
introduction to How to Make a Watercolor Paint Itself talks about two of
these deeper questions The first is essentially ldquoWhat do you want your
watercolor to dordquo Or ldquoWhat response do you want from a person viewing
your paintingrdquo For me I would love it if the person viewing my painting
caught their breath and gasped at the beauty of Godrsquos world that I had
hopefully captured in paint The ldquowhatrdquo of painting could be answered with a
subject or topic such as portraits or landscapes or pets or flowers but I
think Englersquos ldquowhatrdquo is a better deeper one
The next probing question Engle asks is ldquoWhat motivates yourdquo Or in other
words ldquoWhy do you paintrdquo I think this is at the heart of an artistic
temperament When I face this question I come up with answers like ldquoI just

We were pleased to have Maura

March
The process of producing art varies
from person to person and is
situational The resources available
in the studio seem unlimited
compared to the austere conditions
of painting on location She
discussed what alterations to the
plein air process is required for
success in the upcoming Arts and

Maura has been an artist all her life
studying at Highland High School

joined the Army for 25 years but
found it easy to carry her paints in
her duffle bag
After completing her career as an
Army officer Maura jumped into a

and art teacher Maura is an award

UWS April Member Meeting
RECAP Lindey Carter
It was an evening of delight watching
Lindey Carter as she worked on a
very non-traditional painting surface
It was also gratifying to see how that
kind of watercolor painting can work
for the experienced hand Who ever
heard of painting with watercolor on
an acrylic primed surface Yet she
showed off the virtues of it very well
Lindey began her presentation with a
history of her beginnings as a young
girl in a large family trying to find her
place and discovering a way to deal
with the energy and chaos by
retreating as best she could into her
own world of drawing and
watercolor She shared a little about
the spiritual underpinnings that were
behind her skills and talent After
she married Lindey received her
post high school education at Weber
State and her degree from the
University of Utah She and her
husband have four children She
paints out of her home
Lindey uses threads of thought and
feeling that she gains from literature
Often what she is striving for is a
degree of balance and simplicity in
her watercolor paintings
Lindey calls herself a ldquobinge painterrdquo
In anticipation of an upcoming show
she will bring out the supplies and
basically take over the kitchen and
dining room She produces several
paintings at a time over a couple of
weeks to a month During that time
the family eats out or fixes their own
meals
While many who study Lindeyrsquos work
might say there is an Asian
influence itrsquos all really just her
finding ways to express what she
feels Any direct connection to Asian
or oriental influence is purely
coincidental

The Utah Watercolor
Society needs
volunteers like you
canrsquot help myselfrdquo Or ldquoI would be
incomplete if painting were not in my liferdquo
As you consider the how what and why of
your own painting what answers do you
come up with
This is my last Presidentrsquos Message and I
thank you for taking the time to read it Itrsquos
been a wonderful journey with you all See
you at our next meeting
When I first joined UWS-CVC I was mainly
interested in learning the techniques of
watercolor My previous efforts had been less
than successful My colors were washed out or
else I tried to use such thick paint that it must
have seemed I was thinking of oil paint (my
first love in painting) At any rate in UWS I was
delighted with all the opportunities to learn
technique demonstrations workshops and
instructional videos All good Essentially the
ldquohowrdquo of watercolor painting
But there are other and I think deeper considerations Nita Engle in her
introduction to How to Make a Watercolor Paint Itself talks about two of
these deeper questions The first is essentially ldquoWhat do you want your
watercolor to dordquo Or ldquoWhat response do you want from a person viewing
your paintingrdquo For me I would love it if the person viewing my painting
caught their breath and gasped at the beauty of Godrsquos world that I had
hopefully captured in paint The ldquowhatrdquo of painting could be answered with a
subject or topic such as portraits or landscapes or pets or flowers but I
think Englersquos ldquowhatrdquo is a better deeper one
The next probing question Engle asks is ldquoWhat motivates yourdquo Or in other
words ldquoWhy do you paintrdquo I think this is at the heart of an artistic
temperament When I face this question I come up with answers like ldquoI just

When I first joined UWS-CVC I was mainly
interested in learning the techniques of

else I tried to use such thick paint that it must
have seemed I was thinking of oil paint (my
first love in painting) At any rate in UWS I was
delighted with all the opportunities to learn
technique demonstrations workshops and
instructional videos All good Essentially the
ldquohowrdquo of watercolor painting
But there are other and I think deeper considerations Nita Engle in her
introduction to How to Make a Watercolor Paint Itself talks about two of

We were pleased to have Maura

March
The process of producing art varies
from person to person and is
situational The resources available
in the studio seem unlimited
compared to the austere conditions
of painting on location She
discussed what alterations to the

success in the upcoming Arts and

Maura has been an artist all her life

joined the Army for 25 years but
found it easy to carry her paints in
her duffle bag

UWS April Member Meeting
RECAP Lindey Carter
It was an evening of delight watching
Lindey Carter as she worked on a
very non-traditional painting surface
It was also gratifying to see how that
kind of watercolor painting can work
for the experienced hand Who ever
heard of painting with watercolor on
an acrylic primed surface Yet she
showed off the virtues of it very well
Lindey began her presentation with a
history of her beginnings as a young
girl in a large family trying to find her
place and discovering a way to deal
with the energy and chaos by
retreating as best she could into her
own world of drawing and
watercolor She shared a little about
the spiritual underpinnings that were
behind her skills and talent After
she married Lindey received her
post high school education at Weber
State and her degree from the
University of Utah She and her
husband have four children She
paints out of her home
Lindey uses threads of thought and
feeling that she gains from literature
Often what she is striving for is a
degree of balance and simplicity in
her watercolor paintings
Lindey calls herself a ldquobinge painterrdquo
In anticipation of an upcoming show
she will bring out the supplies and
basically take over the kitchen and
dining room She produces several
paintings at a time over a couple of
weeks to a month During that time
the family eats out or fixes their own
meals
While many who study Lindeyrsquos work
might say there is an Asian
influence itrsquos all really just her
finding ways to express what she
feels Any direct connection to Asian
or oriental influence is purely
coincidental
