Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ, Grace and Peace be with you now and always. A lot was made recently about the way a bunch of comet dust would light up our night sky. The ‘falling stars’ would give us a brilliant show in the wee hours of the morning. I stayed up to see it. It was cloudy. No light show. No reports about it the next morning. But there have been falling stars all around. The first for me was Vincent Harding. Vince was one of my professors at Iliff School of Theology. His first words to me were, “There is more to you than first look…I hope.” That was a helpful challenge. A truth teller extraordinaire in class and in life. Vince was also one of the Heroes of Hope, a friend, confidant and speechwriter for Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., a writer and producer of a wonderful series on PBS. Then just a week later, poet Maya Angelou. A person who spoke the truth in transforming ways, and walked the walk. Her writing can take me places others cannot. The web is alight with her poetry and sayings this week. Now, just a few days later Winnie Homer, one of our own stars here in Framing- ham. Winnie was not ‘famous’ like Tom Brady, Big Papi, Ellen or Oprah. No, Win- nie was a quiet soul who loved her Lord and lived that love as best she could. Now that is a Star. Oh, if you had been a fly on my shoulder as the family told of how Winnie caught a whale, how she got laughing and giggled and giggled, of her strong reading, figuring and common sense skills in spite of a 4 th grade education. Of her love for Bill, her family, her church. All this is the true star dust. I pray we pass through the trails of many such bright comets in our lives. Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ, Grace and Peace be with you now and always.

A lot was made recently about the way a bunch of comet dust would light up our

night sky. The ‘falling stars’ would give us a brilliant show in the wee hours of the

morning. I stayed up to see it. It was cloudy. No light show. No reports about it the

next morning. But there have been falling stars all around. The first for me was

Vincent Harding. Vince was one of my professors at Iliff School of Theology. His

first words to me were, “There is more to you than first look…I hope.” That was a

helpful challenge. A truth teller extraordinaire in class and in life. Vince was also

one of the Heroes of Hope, a friend, confidant and speechwriter for Rev. Martin

Luther King Jr., a writer and producer of a wonderful series on PBS. Then just a

week later, poet Maya Angelou. A person who spoke the truth in transforming

ways, and walked the walk. Her writing can take me places others cannot. The web

is alight with her poetry and sayings this week.

Now, just a few days later Winnie Homer, one of our own stars here in Framing-

ham. Winnie was not ‘famous’ like Tom Brady, Big Papi, Ellen or Oprah. No, Win-

nie was a quiet soul who loved her Lord and lived that love as best she could. Now

that is a Star. Oh, if you had been a fly on my shoulder as the family told of how

Winnie caught a whale, how she got laughing and giggled and giggled, of her

strong reading, figuring and common sense skills in spite of a 4th grade education.

Of her love for Bill, her family, her church. All this is the true star dust. I pray we

pass through the trails of many such bright comets in our lives.

JUNE HERALD 2014

Covenant Bible Study is coming to Wesley United Methodist Church: A

fresh look at a timeless promise. THE BIBLICAL CONCEPT OF COVENANT speaks to an enduring commit-

ment between God and God’s fruitful people. It’s a promise—to live in a loving

relationship with and for each other.

So the purpose of COVENANT BIBLE STUDY is to engage participants as we

study the Bible together.

The goal of COVENANT BIBLE STUDY is to deepen our understanding of

scripture while also helping us respond together in answering God’s call to a faith-

ful life in Jesus. It helps participants, through learning, sharing and conversation,

apply the Bible to their own personal story.

COVENANT IS A 24-WEEK, IN-DEPTH GROUP BIBLE STUDY in which people read and discuss the

Bible together; learning how to love God—and others—better. Shorter than Disciple Bible Study

This differs from other Bible studies by emphasizing covenant as a unifying pattern throughout the entire Bi-

ble. It underscores the unique relationship that God chooses with us as God's people.

The program covers both Testaments—discussing books from each in a way that shows the interconnected-

ness of scripture as a whole.

But deep, committed study needn’t be complex. It should be flexible. Relevant. Engaging. And Activating.

Covenant is.

Watch for upcoming sign-ups for Covenant Groups!!! 8 weeks in the fall, 8 weeks into Lent, 8 weeks after

Easter.

To Wesley UMC Members,

Thank you very much for The Paper Store gift card in recog-nition of Administrative Profes-sionals Day. It was very thoughtful of you.

Lisa LaVigne, Administrative Assistant

To My Church Family,

Thank you so much for the cards, calls, texts, thoughts and prayers I received when my father passed away. It was very comforting knowing so many people from my church family were support-ing me through this difficult time.

Lisa LaVigne

Thank you, Pastor Don, for the nomination for the Lifetime of Discipleship Award. Thank you to all who wrote letters of sup-port for the nomination.

We are truly humble and thankful to have been chosen for this award. The Lifetime of Disciple-ship Award is a divine blessing.

Charles and Marie Frasier

The Caring Corner "It's beautiful the Summer month of June

When all of God's own wildflowers are in bloom

And sun shines brightly most part of the day

And butterflies o'er lush green meadows play.” Francis Duggan There is so much going on with Wesley members and friends, we just don’t know where to begin……so here goes.

We have had some “visitors” since we last wrote. Dave Hatch brought his mother Norma to church on Mother’s Day and McKinley Hackett surprised his mother Mary with a

church visit and lunch. Pat Everett came from North Carolina to spend time with Elsie and visit with her sister Janis Snow and her family. We so enjoyed seeing Karen Hoyt who had just been released from Marlboro Hospital with pneumonia. Thanks to Bill Snow, Neil

McCormick came to see his many friends. He is doing well and enjoys having his meals served to him each day. Harold Barrows is finally walking without the brace, but needs to use a cane a while

longer. His physical therapy is helping him to regain strength and flexibility. As he men-tioned in church, he is now able to wear long pants once again.

June is a month of farewells and we Methodists are bidding a fond farewell to Rev. and Mrs. Bruce McPherson from Community UMC. Bruce and his wife, Karen will be missed as they move into a new home in Maine built for retiring ministers. First Methodist will

miss Sandra Bonnette-Kim as she will be the full time minister at the Grace Methodist Church in Lynn. Sandra’s daughters were a part of the Framingham church and youth group. We wish them all well in the future.

Cristian Colby, son of Lisa and Tom and grandson of Carolyn, graduates from Ashland High School. He will be going to Mass Bay and hopes to go into the Marines in the near fu-

ture. Graham Hegeman, son of Pastor Don and Gretchen, went through graduation cere-monies at Clark University, although he had received his degree last December. Graham has been accepted into Clark's Masters program.

Each month, the Women of Wesley get together for lunch. Edna, Marge, Fran, Margaret, Nan, Marie, Florence and Cora gathered at Outback Steak House. They will be going to

Framingham Beer Works in June. The choir and congregation want to thank Julie Rundlett and Carol Hughes for the won-derful music directed and played by them during the past nine months. The talent each of

you brings to Wesley each and every Sunday and your dedication cannot be measured. God has certainly blessed us with you both, and we look forward to your continued service to God and Wesley throughout the summer. Julie and her husband Dave welcomed their

second granddaughter Olivia to daughter Leslie and John Magri. Big sister Ava is a very good mother’s helper so we hear. Carol Hughes recently moved into a larger house and

has been reunited with her piano. Thanks to the great direction of Rich Olsen, the bell choir will also be taking a well-deserved rest. We are glad to hear that John Howard is making good progress on his recovery from sur-

gery. He is hoping to come back to services soon. Phyllis Giardini has moved to Newton Center, but has kept in touch with us here at

Wesley.

A Habitat for Humanity project has been happening in Wayland. Wesley was well repre-

sented on Saturday, May 10th, with Pastor Don, Glenn Opela and son Jacob, Oscar

Mobley, Chuck and Marie Frasier, Phil LaVigne, Bill Snow, and Dimitri and Julia Yakovlev

Logan helped with the project. We are sure that each person felt gratified, even with sore

muscles for a few days, in knowing that they have helped some neighbors in need. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Lisa, Phil, Michael, and Kyle LaVigne on the passing of

Lisa’s father Lauri (Larry) Waananen. Larry was very active parishioner at the Methodist Church of Lenox. Lisa did the gospel reading and sang “There’s a Spirit of Love in This Place” with her sister Laurel.

Marie and Chuck Frasier were surprised when Pastor Don announced that they were re-ceiving the Lifetime of Discipleship Award this year. This will be formally present at the New England Annual Conference. Marie and Chuck have devoted themselves to a life in

Christ, no matter where they have lived. Wesley has been blessed to have them here for twenty-eight years and have seen and been a part of all they do and say. Thank you both

for all you do for each of us at Wesley. As you are packing for a summer vacation, remember that God doesn’t take a vacation, but goes with you. God is not only in Framingham's Wesley Church, but in many

churches around the country and the world. Why not visit another church on a Sunday and bring back some ideas for Wesley if you see something you like.

"Kind hearts are the gardens; kind thoughts are the roots; kind words are the flowers; kind deeds are the fruits."

English Proverb God be with you until we “meet” again. Charlotte Peterson

The choir is taking their summer sab-batical beginning today thru, and includ-ing, the first Sunday in September. This is a wonderful opportunity to explore new music during our summer Worship Services. We invite anyone interested to speak to either of us, and we will help plan this with you. There is a sign-up sheet on the piano in the choir room and also one in the office. Please pro-vide two weeks' notice. Please prayer-fully consider providing music. We look forward to seeing new faces and hearing new voices and instruments during the next three months. Blessing, Julie Rundlett (Choir Director) 508-877-7283 Carol Hughes (Accompanist) 978-760-1713

“YOU’RE DAMN RIGHT I BELIEVE IN ANOTHER GOSPEL” Posted on April 4, 2014 by word of a woman. Since beginning this blog, I have had several Evangelical friends accuse me of believing “another gospel”. At first, I bristled at their accusations. But here today, I would like to say to them all, “You’re damn right. I believe in another gospel.”

If your gospel is that God is some sort of abusive parent who loves you “unconditionally” unless you die without accepting his love and then he sentences you to eternal conscious torment in hell, then YES, I BELIEVE IN ANOTHER GOSPEL.

If your gospel says some people aren’t good enough to help feed, clothe and educate children simply because they are married to someone of the same gender; if your gospel says you can cut off these kids like a subscription to Good Housekeeping because “Ewww, the gays.”; if your gospel closes the doors of heaven in people’s faces because of who they love, then YES, I BELIEVE IN ANOTHER GOSPEL.

If your gospel says women are eternally subjected to men because Jesus is eternally sub-jected to the Father; if your gospel says women are equal, but men are more equal; if your gospel excludes women from any area of ministry, leadership, service or vocation, then YES, I BELIEVE IN ANOTHER GOSPEL.

If your gospel allows you to feel oppressed when other people gain rights you have always enjoyed, then YES, I BELIEVE IN ANOTHER GOSPEL.

If your gospel encourages you to pass laws that discriminate against others, then YES, I BE-LIEVE IN ANOTHER GOSPEL

If your gospel encourages you to identify and exclude people who disagree with you, then YES, I BELIEVE IN ANOTHER GOSPEL.

If your gospel permits you expelling a little girl from school for not being girly enough then, YES, I BELIEVE IN ANOTHER GOSPEL.

If your gospel teaches that women are responsible for the sexual sins of men, then YES, I BELIEVE IN ANOTHER GOSPEL.

If your gospel teaches that everything in the Bible is to be taken literally, then YES, I BELIEVE IN ANOTHER GOSPEL.

If your gospel teaches that God is some sort of genocidal terrorist who condones the killing of entire races, including children, then YES, I BELIEVE IN ANOTHER GOSPEL.

If your gospel features a God wrapped in the American flag, who always votes Republican, then YES, I BELIEVE IN ANOTHER GOSPEL.

If your gospel features an AR-15 toting, cage fighting, ass-kicking Jesus, then YES, I BE-LIEVE IN ANOTHER GOSPEL.

If your gospel is one of “us versus them” or “in versus out”, then YES, I BELIEVE IN ANOTHER GOSPEL.

If your gospel puts anything above loving God and your neighbor as yourself, then YES, I BE-LIEVE IN ANOTHER GOSPEL.

The Gospel I embrace is one of love; one where we are all equal in the eyes of God. One where neither how much you’ve blown it or how perfect you’ve been is what matters; one where everyone gets to play. One where the Father loves without an unless; one where grace and generosity trump fairness; one where we do not get what we have earned or what we deserve but one where we all get to belong. The Gospel I embrace is truly good news, and if THAT is “another gospel” I am guilty as charged.

WORSHIP... now Go!

June 2014

Mission is all day, every day. Christianity is not about life on Sunday; it’s about life each and every

day. It’s about how we see the world and all we do in it. If we happen to feel lost in life, then we

can be sure of just one thing—it’s time to take a second look to be sure we are living out our part in

God’s mission. Change how we see ourselves and the role of the church in our life. We are not just a

church member sitting silently in a pew week after week; or a working mother perpetually feeling

she does not have enough to give either at the office or at home; or someone too old to be of any use

to anyone. We are missionaries, Christian missionaries. We have critical work to do for the Lord’s

reign on Earth and our contribution cannot be replaced. We cannot be replaced. Adapted from comments by A. Wayne Schwab, author of “When the Members are the Missionaries”.

Financial News to Be Proud Of

Grace and Peace to you all. As the year is fast approaching its midpoint, the weather

is getting warmer, and the days are longer, some of us will be visiting friends and

relatives for the summer. We have been very blessed with members and friends who

are very good stewards and for that, the Finance Committee is very grateful for your continued stew-

ardship. We are very pleased to report that your income has kept in line with your yearly pledge. And

for that we are thankful. It has helped us to keep up with the expenses of heating our building and ex-

penses for plowing the parking lot after such a long and hard winter. Blessings all around for the

Easter contribution, as of May 18th, the total received has been close to $1600.00. There is more good

news to report and also extra blessings. Our “Imagine No Malaria” fund has reached an incredible

$955.24 also on the last count of May 18th. And it keeps getting better; this month we receive a dona-

tion of $500.00 towards our Capital Fund. Is not God Good? Yes indeed. At this time of year, I would

be reminding you all to keep our church and you pledges in mind as you visit friends and family, but

with such dedicated group of stewards, it needs no reminder. Have a great summer and it is a blessing

for me to be a part of this congregation.

Art McNeil, Chair/Finance

MOVING FORWARD

June 2014

This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it (Psalms 118:24).

Today let us rejoice. Rejoice because we have been given the opportunity to be redeemed.

We have experienced the holiest time afforded us. However, I must ask (of myself as well),

did you really take into your heart and consume the blessings God bestowed upon us. He has

bestowed blessings of forgiveness, the blessings of grace, and the blessings of mercy.

Today let us give glory and praise to God for His love and His forgiveness. It is His forgive-

ness we seek because we have not followed His command to love the Lord your God, with all

your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind (Deut. 6:5). As easy as it may sound,

we need the help of the Holy Spirit. We cannot do anything alone (even though we think we

can). We cannot do anything alone because we are not holy as the Lord our Savior. We must

pray to the Lord our God to make us holy, yes, we must pray, we must pray.

Through prayer, we connect our heart, our soul, and our mind to God. We pray for strength

and guidance. We pray for forgiveness, grace, and mercy. We pray for the Holy Spirit to in-

dwell in our heart, so that we may rejoice in the Lord and we are glad, for He has redeemed us

that we may go out into the world to share the Good News – Jesus Christ is alive! May the

Holy Spirit be with us and we will move forward.

Blessings,

Marie Frasier,

Lay Leader

“Enjoy the day with the Lord.”

United Methodist Women Summer Retreat Marcia Hoyt’s House on Long Lake, Harrison ME

Weekend of June 20 - 22

Watch the hummingbirds zoom in to the feeder on the deck. Listen to the loons calling across the lake. Feel the cool water and gentle waves against your skin as you float or swim. And bask in the fellowship of a wonderful group of women enjoying time to-gether. These are just a few of the enticements that draw us to our annual UMW Re-treat at Marcia Hoyt's house on Long Lake in Harrison, Maine, the weekend of June 20-22. Our theme is "Girls + Education = Achievement", helping girls achieve an education in areas of the world where circumstances make it difficult. Would you like to join us, too? There is room for at least 16 women and more if you want a sofa in the cool basement or sleeping bag on the floor. There will be time for swimming, sunning on the boat dock, relaxing on the deck, shopping, reading, doing needlework, talking, and more. There will be fun and laughter, theme reflection time, campfire songs and s'mores, and Chapel on the Deck on Sunday morning. The retreat is open to all women. The cost is $30 per person payable to Dottie Lee from CUMC, preferably before the retreat, plus your own money for Friday lunch on the Flight Deck overlooking Long Lake when we arrive, money for shopping and pos-sibly lunch on Saturday and perhaps a local church supper on Saturday evening. Bring your own sheets and pillowcase for twin beds or a sleeping bag for on top of the mat-tress, and towels. Marcia has pillows and blankets. Everyone pitches in to help in some way. We try to make this as relaxing a weekend as possible!! Sign up on The Table in Fellowship Hall at Community UMC, or by contacting Dottie Lee at 508-653-5369 or [email protected].
