When you’re on a diet as well, you want something that not only tastes amazing but has the ability to fill you up adequately. This last week, we’ve been fortunate enough to have the freshest items with the most delicious recipes picked and packed especially for us – all calorie counted, nutritionally balanced and healthy and not by our local supermarket, or a personal chef (although this service is most definitely like having your own personal shopper) but by Gousto. Gousto is an amazing concept. Started in 2011 by two friends who share a passion for food and cooking, they understood the difficulties that many people face when trying to cook from online cookbooks and TV shows as they simply don’t have the time to shop for the food they need. This then means, that instead of preparing and cooking fresh, healthy meals, people would rely on ready meals with lots of additives, getting stuck in a mundane rut of the bland and boring. Surely, picking the recipes that whet your appetite, or what fit in with your daily calories, then having those ingredients delivered pre-weighed, already portioned for you, ready to prepare and cook along with a step by step guide, is the perfect idea for the busy mum, dad or couple that like to cook together. Sometimes finding something healthy and nutritious in the evening can become a littlerepetitive if you don’t have a big selection of recipes and ingredients that you canprepare and cook. When you’re on a diet as well, you want something that not onlytastes amazing but has the ability to fill you up adequately.

This last week, we’ve been fortunate enough to have the freshest items with the mostdelicious recipes picked and packed especially for us – all calorie counted, nutritionallybalanced and healthy and not by our local supermarket, or a personal chef (althoughthis service is most definitely like having your own personal shopper) but by Gousto.

Gousto is an amazing concept. Started in 2011 by two friendswho share a passion for food andcooking, they understood thedifficulties that many people facewhen trying to cook from onlinecookbooks and TV shows as theysimply don’t have the time to shopfor the food they need. This thenmeans, that instead of preparingand cooking fresh, healthy meals, people would rely on ready mealswith lots of additives, getting stuckin a mundane rut of the bland andboring.

Surely, picking the recipes thatwhet your appetite, or what fit inwith your daily calories, thenhaving those ingredients delivered pre-weighed, already portioned for you, ready toprepare and cook along with a step by step guide, is the perfect idea for the busy mum,dad or couple that like to cook together. I know it is for us.

In our box this week, we were treated to enough for 6 meals. Ours was a box for afamily of 4, so everything delivered was enough for 4 or more people. As there is only 2of us, everything that was pre-portioned was just halved and stored for the next meal. It’s all measured perfectly (give or take a few grams) with the calories, fat and proteinshown on the step by step cooking guide card. The cards are very easy to read, understand and follow, being set out in around 8 different steps from preparation of theraw ingredients to the final plating up and serving.

Our recipes were:

Page 2: UsTwoFriends.com product reviews september 2014

Cajun Chicken – 610 calories, 10g fat, 65g protein per person

Pork Steaks with Salsa Verde – 445 calories, 12g fat, 55g protein per person

Italian Sausages with Lentils – 714 calories, 27g fat, 51g protein per person

Everything in the box was as fresh as a daisy (even though it had sat out in our gardenfor a few hours in the sunshine) I did originally think that it might have gone funny butthe packaging inside is so good, it kept the frozen chilled and the fresh cool so I didn’thave to worry. That’s generally one of my concerns when I order food boxes of any kindsince the couriers think that it’s ok to leave it out in the driveway or by the front doorwithout a second thought to the weather, however if you know that they are safe wherethey are left and are packed sufficiently well that the fresh food inside of it won’t ruinthen you can order without concern.

When I opened our box I was overjoyed. Packed from base to top with glorious fresh, beautifully colourful fruit and vegetables, huge fillets of chicken, hand sized pork steaksand some of the most delectable thick cumberland sausages that I had ever clappedeyes on. Smaller packets of herbs and spices were packed in individual bags and allcalculated to at least a weeks worth of meals – deliciously hand picked and packed fortaste, with just enough of each ingredients for minimal waste.

After packing everything away, we sat down to choose which meal we would try first. Andy thought Cajun Chicken would be a lovely dish to begin with as we hadn’t hadchicken for a few days, so that’s what we decided on. He took out a couple of themassive chicken fillets (they were at least 8oz fillets which I’ve only seen and boughtfrom Muscle Food before) and put them in the fridge for the next day. I was prettyexcited about cooking with him the next day so wished away as many hours afterwaking as I could bear until it was time for tea.

Page 3: UsTwoFriends.com product reviews september 2014

All we had to supply to make thecajun chicken was salt, pepperand olive oil, as everything else –chicken, couscous, stock cubes, apricots, onions, natural yogurt, helda beans, cumin, coriander, paprika and oregano was alreadysupplied.

First thing he had to do was chopthe onions into quarters (we adorebaked onions) and sprinkle themwith a pinch of salt, place them inthe oven until they were soft andcaramelised. While he did this, Itook the cumin, coriander, paprika, oregano and blackpepper and put them into acasserole dish. Seasoned withsalt and put to one side while he sliced the chicken up.

Whilst he covered the chickenstrips in the cajun spice, I put thekettle on, chopped the apricotsand dissolved the stock cube, adding the couscous then theapricots to the bowl, covering withboiled water and setting asidewith a clean cloth over the top. This generally takes around 10minutes and is similar to what wedo when we make the Tabboulehwith bulgar wheat to soak andsettle.

Helda beans (which are verysimilar to runner beans but lessstringy) were then cut into pieces, put in a pan with some olive oiland the chicken. The onions thencame out of the oven and were put to one side. Andy continued cooking the chickenand beans while I took the natural yogurt, seasoning it with olive oil, salt and pepperand set aside.

Page 4: UsTwoFriends.com product reviews september 2014

Final few steps were easyenough. Just fluffing thecouscous with the soft and juicyapricots and mixing that with thechicken and onions bought thisgorgeous meals to it’s crescendo. Once it was piled on the plate witha huge dollop of dressing on theside, I couldn’t wait to tuck in.

It was simply delightful. Start tofinish about 30 minutes – easy asyou like. No fussing, noshopping, nothing. Just choosewhat you want to eat, wait fordelivery and then prepare themouthwatering dish for you andyour loved ones. Why didn’tanything think of it before! It’sgenius!

But it didn’t stop there. The nextday we were treated to PorkSteaks and Salsa Verde.

Again preparation was a doddle. From start to finish 40 minutesand this dish introduced me tosomething that I’ve fallen in lovewith – the sweet and sourpeppers stuffed with tomatoesthat formed our side dish. Thesherry vinegar turned the peppersfrom what are ordinarily overlystrong and too crunchy to a soft, sweet and luscious side dish thatleft me yearning for more. But thepiece de resistance was the salsaverde. Who knew just how easy it was to produce such a gorgeous dressing. Justparsley, garlic and olive oil, took what could easily have been a bland meal into one withmore vibrancy than seen at a Matisse exhibition.

The final meal Italian Sausages with Lentils although looked sensational, really wasn’t

Page 5: UsTwoFriends.com product reviews september 2014

to my taste since I’m not such a big fan of puy style lentils which was a big part of thedish. But as 2 out of the 3 mealswere amazing, it was worth tryingit just incase I enjoyed the waythat they recommended that theywere prepared with rosemary. Itwasn’t my favourite butnevertheless was still enjoyableand was something that I hadn’ttried before in that combination.

Buying the box for a family of 4,especially for us, was moreeconomical as we could alternatethe meals in the box to havesomething different each day, andthen be able to top up theshopping for the one day we hadleft to cater for. You just have topop onto their site and pick yournext 3 dishes, booking them in foreither a Wednesday or a Fridaydelivery, then just wait for it. I’veordered our next box for deliverynext week and I genuinely can’twait.

We’re having:

• Roasted Pork & CandiedOrange• Fresh Mozzarella Penne• Goats’ Cheese Bulgar Risotto

Sound like something you wouldlike? Want to prepare a specialmeal for a loved one? Want toimpress someone with yourculinary skills? Or do you just want to take out the worry of finding the ingredients, buying them and then carrying them home again getting them delivered, ready for youjust to prepare, then get yourself a Gousto Box. I cannot recommend it highly enoughand if they start producing boxes with complete meals for a whole week… I’m there likea shot.

JoggBox September Box Review

This week is Andy’s first gym session with a personal trainer so I’ve had to hunt aroundfor decent, supportive training shoes and to grab him a sports bag. He’s lucky thoughsince being referred by our doctors, he gets the first 10 weeks training totally free (hestill however has to pay a joining fee) but since he hasn’t been to a gym in about 20years, he’s really looking forward to it. Losing 4 stone over the last 6 months has lefthim a little saggy so he just wants to tone himself up and get himself back to how hewas when I met him.

So what fantastic timing since this week as I received my September JoggBox! Againthere’s a brilliant selection of goodies to tempt you, but not just perishable goodies thismonth, as the subscription now include items customised for you. Just pop in yourgender, age, shoe size, top size, short size and whether or not you have any foodconstraints and you will receive a box catered for you, personally. It just gets better andbetter.

Let me run through what we havein this months box:

A copy of Running FitnessRRP £2.99

Brilliant health orientatedmagazine which doesn’t just focuson Running. Brilliant article insidethis edition – October 2014 aboutportion distortion and howovereating by just 100 calories aday can lead to a 5kg weight gainwithin a year (that’s enough to putyou off right there). Plus featureson the SPIbelt which incidentallywould be brilliant for Andy to carryground his phone and keys whenhe’s training, a brilliant articleconcerning different diets andsome really useful cross trainingexercises. But this magazine isn’tjust obsessed with running. It’smore like a good health magazinewith tips and techniques on howto stay fit and lose fat. There’s somuch I never knew too. It’s an artto keeping and staying fit obviously!

Chia Charge RRP £1.60 per bar

This is a huge bar at 80g so perhaps not for one sitting (we shared it). The originalversion is a very buttery, creamy chia seed flapjack with sea salt flakes and is utterlydelicious. 378 calories for the whole bar (which for me it’s a little much, but half is ok)but for someone training, is a perfect way to replace sports gels as it replaces 3-4 ofthem. Chia seeds are amazing antioxidants providing you with omega 3 with the saltflakes acting as a natural form of electrolyte replacement. Manufactured specifically toenable a fast energy boost with slower burning carbs, so ideal to eat 30-90 minutesbefore training. Also available in banana chia if the original isn’t your thing. I havedefinitely got to buy some of these for when Andy starts at the gym (if only to steal half abar for myself).

Page 10: UsTwoFriends.com product reviews september 2014

Urban Fruit in Strawberry RRP £1 per sachet

Now these are definitely my thing. I love fruit and love snacking (a big downfall for me)but snacking on dried fruit is simply perfect as you can carry it around, store it easilywithout putting it in a fridge and don’t have to eat it all at once. This little sachet of fruityheaven (they have larger bags with different fruit) is just 102 calories per bag. Thestrawberries aren’t dried out to the point where they’re light and puffy, but they’re driedlike figs so they’re chewy, moist and really scrumptious. No added sugar, oils, sulphitesor concentrates are used, so you get the full on fruity goodness in a handy packet.Available in a whole range of gorgeous baked fruits: Mango, Pineapple, blueberry andblackcurrant, apple and pear, banana, cherry and finally apricot.

2 Hydrate Plus sachets byElivar RRP £12.99 per boxof 12

This is a brand new highperformance isotonic energy drinkwhich is pretty perfect for thosetraining in warner weather orindoors due to losing more fluidsthrough sweat so replacing thesethese is incredibly important tomaintain the energy levels thatyou are sustaining. They neverseem to taste particularly nice dueto the sodium in the drinks but ifyou have a high intense workoutand feel a little worn outafterwards, these drinks can perkyou up immediately.

3 x Body Volt Energy Gel RRP £1.25 per gel

These gels are amazing for diabetics who run or train. Sometimes when you exert quitea bit of energy as a diabetic your blood sugar plummets so you have to find somethingquick to boost the blood glucose back up again. These little pockets of gel deliver 16gof carbohydrates and also taste great too. Many times I’ve bought a gel to use shouldmy blood sugar drop too low (perhaps I’d taken a bit too much insulin due to my weightloss or had long periods in between eating) but the gel has literally turned my stomachas it was revolting. This gel however is quite nice so no worries there.

Page 11: UsTwoFriends.com product reviews september 2014

Miracle Tea Bags RRP£6.99 for 25 bags

These have made a welcomereturn in this months box. I havealready tried the original, but herewe have one of the original andone of the Mango flavour. Reallyhealthy for you as gram for gramMoringa leaves contain so manyamazing nutrients that they boostenergy levels, increasing focusand wakening up your vitality. Ihave a tendency to nix mine witha spoonful of matcha green teatoo just to get as much goodnessas I can at once.

Acti-Snack – fruit and nutRRP £12 per box of 12impulse packs.

These are pre portioned 40g bagsof nuts, fruit and seeds. Availablein 5 different varieties, for Fuel,Endurance or Recovery (orindeed as a mixture of all 3)formulated to maximise on the beneficial proteins, healthy fats and carbohydrates.Perfect for before training at the gym, during your sessions (as long as you are carefulyou don’t choke with them) or after your session. The pack in the JoggBox wasspecifically for endurance with oven roasted hazelnuts, pistachio nuts with goji berriesand raisins. Anything with goji berries gets my thumbs up malignly because they arejam packed with vitamin C, vitamin B2, vitamin A, iron and selenium. Selenium is anamazing mineral as it’s required for the production of tetraoidothyronine and forconversion to the more active form of hormone triiodothyronine. This is brilliant forwomen, but it’s the role in mental health that I love it for. Selenium along with siliconhas a calming effect on the nervous system, which is often an issue with people and lowmood, or indeed the more severe depression.

1 pair of what are just likeXtenex Laces but JoggBoxbranded RRP £6 per pair

These are the ultimate in shoelaces. Elasticated, knotted lacesin a bright orange (there are lotsmore colours around). They don’tneed tying and provide the mostcomfortable fitting for your trainingor running shoes. I wish I’dbought a pair of these myselfwhen I bought my SkechersShape Ups as they wouldn’t havebeen as uncomfortable as thelaces that were supplied. Andywill be using these when he goesto the gym this week and will nodoubt want a few more pairs indifferent colours to match hismood.

Want to know how to use them –take a look:

and finally an item which wascustomised for me being a size 8in shoe…

Kymira Socks RRP £15 per pair

It’s only once in a while that you find something so amazing that you just have to give inand experience it. Kymira is a science lead company that creates new and excitingproducts and so as Kymira sport, they have used clinically researched techniques toimprove performance of those training or running harnessing their surplus energy andconverting it to infared which is utilised by our muscles through what we wear providingmuch more oxygen at a cellular level. Similar to how wearing Skechers Shape Upshelps calf muscles purely by taking the energy that you are using by walking or runningwith them and dispersing them in the correct manner. Just goes to show that it’s notjust what you do or what you eat that helps maintain your fitness. But Kymira has atotal range of core 2.0 products which they are creating as we speak. They are crowdfunding their research so expect many more items as well as ideas from this neat littleproject. Right now JoggBox is the only place you can get the Kymira Socks as they are

Page 13: UsTwoFriends.com product reviews september 2014

out for delivery in November 2014, but if you pledge £10 or more on their kickstarterproject page they will send you a pair. Will be interesting to see how the socks performwhen I get the Shape Ups back on when the sunshine goes in and we’re faced withcolder weather so I’ll keep you posted.

All in all, yet another corker of a box from JoggBox worth approximately £35 for the £15plus p&p subscription. Amazing!

Generally for me, Sunday’s I spend either watching trashy TV or firing up the games consoles but with the last ofthe summer sun shining, I want to spend as much time as possible outside and as I don’t really sunbathe, welisten to music, eat or get bored with nothing else to do.

When I was a kid and I’d moan at my dad that I was bored, he’d dig into his pocket and pull out a pack of playingcards and either have a game of Pontoon with me, or watch me play Patience (Solitaire). OK, I’ve not played anyof those with physical cards now for a good 20 years up until last week when I found a pack of cards in my mailthanks to my friends at Ladbrokes. What’s even better is the fact that they are Us Two Friends playing cards, sothat made my day!

The cards are designed by Daniel White (initially they were designed by Joseph Larkowsky – see the imagebelow – and although they were absolutely gorgeous, they didn’t quite fit in with the theme of our blog being areview/food/parent one) so Daniel took the reigns and after a few attempts of proposed designs, he produced hisfinal illustration for us of which I think is simply gorgeous and a perfect way to sum us up.

The design was then printed onto playing cards by Snapajack who manufacture an amazing selection ofpersonalised goodies – fingerprint pictures, giant cards, wine boxes and much more. These particular cards wereprinted for just £9.97 as they had one image but that doesn’t include the illustration which was kindlycommissioned by Ladbrokes for Us Two Friends.

So when we had a few spare hours free the other day, (although I didn’t want to break the seal as they are a oneoff) I thought it would be a good idea to have a game of cards with Andy… little did I know he knows far more cardgames than I will ever know (although I’m a whizz at Poker) and could kick my butt with any game I put in front ofhim. So although it filled a few embarrassing hours (for me) I wouldn’t want to play him in Vegas!

What I will be doing with them though just to show him that I can do something he can’t (can you tell we’re a littlecompetitive) is learn some card tricks. I might as well just to see if I can emulate my former crush Paul Daniels.. (Iknow, I know, I was going through a phase, I shall never live it down). But there’s so many tutorials on YouTube, Imight as well give it a go.

Going to join me?

As much as I love trying new, exciting foods, I also love trying new exciting drinks. I’mtrying to limit myself to fizzy drinks at the moment as I tend to get obsessed with thembut I’ve got a real favourite at the moment being Tesco’s Mango Zero. It’s zingy, tangyand utterly gorgeous served over ice. However, if you’re not a big fan of soft drinks, perhaps some of the hard stuff if more to your taste? If it is, you’d have loved it at myhouse today where we got the opportunity to try a cocktail making kit from TasteCocktails.

TASTE is for the cocktail lover or the wannabe mixologist. Each boxcontain premium ingredients and recipes to make up to 6 cocktails (witha little extra to taste), and information about the source and history ofyour drinks.

If the food and beauty boxes are not your thing, or you want something different to buythe person that has everything, try a subscription or even a one off box.

You receive a selection of bottles, beautifully packed in a cardboardbox with black shredded packing. It’s not particular big, so if youhave a parcel box, there’ll be noneed to pop down to your localsorting office to pick it up as theycan put it in there. If not, I doubt itwould fit through a regular postbox as it’s a little bit too wide butit’s securely enough packed thatthe bottles won’t break as thepacking hugs the bottlessufficiently.

You’ll receive enough to make 6cocktails – 2 classics and theextra TASTE variations (whichyou just have to try since they arethe piece de resistance of the box). You get all the main liquid ingredients per box plusa little bit extra if you do want to modify it slightly. You’re not thrown in at the deep endeither since you get a lovely recipe booklet in the box which contains information aboutthere source and history of what you’ll be drinking plus hint and tips to improve the

tasting.

Toby (the founder) was kindenough to send us the AugustBox which was the Daiquiri Box.The recipe card included theoriginal Daiquiri with 2 variationsbeing The Hemingway Daiquiri(The Papa Doble) and TheCanchanchara. All we needed topurchase extra was a bag ofcrushed ice, a couple of limesand a grapefruit. It’s unfortunatethat we had to use grapefruitsince that meant I couldn’t try TheHemingway as some of themedication I’m on doesn’t allowme to drink it. However, therewas nothing to stop me trying anyof the others which I did withfervor!

First up was the Classic Daiquiri(for 2 drinks)

2 shots (in this case the shotswere 20ml rather than 25mlas recommended by Toby)40ml Ron Cortez/Ron Abeulo(we tried both)

12 ml freshly squeezed lime juice

8ml TASTE syrup

Add all to a shaker (which we bought at Tesco for £10), fill with ice and shake for 10-15seconds (easier said than done as it nearly froze Andy’s fingers off) then fine strain (wejust used the one in the shaker) into a chilled martini glass or coupe. Garnish with atwist of lime peel.

We had already bought a couple of martini glasses anyway (you might find them inTesco labelled Cocktail Glasses) so we popped them in the fridge for 10 minutes whilewe made the cocktail.

Page 18: UsTwoFriends.com product reviews september 2014

After shaking, there didn’t seeman awful lot in the glass (unlessthe glasses were a little large) butit filled it halfway. We tried theRon Cortez one first (which is thewhite rum) and although it wasnice, the Ron Abuelo (5 year rum)was heaps stronger and workedwonderfully with the lime. Thewhite rum to me, seemed a littleraw compared to the full roundedflavour of the darker rum. Usingthe crushed ice allowed a little toescape into the glass which oncepoured into the chilled glass madethe condensation show making itso much more enticing.

We then moved onto theHemingway with the addedgrapefruit juice and the littleaddition of the delightfulMaraschino liqueur (incidentally Icould drink that on it’s own since itwas so lush or as an addition in aCasa Blanca). Named afterErnest Hemingway who wroteabout his travels and the drinks he enjoyed around the world, having several createdjust for him. This one created at Floridita bar in Havana. Andy reliably informed me thatthis was a little more sour than the Classic Daiquiri but he still wouldn’t say no to it if itwere on offer.

Page 19: UsTwoFriends.com product reviews september 2014

Finally we moved on to theCanchanchara (served in thetumbler above) – the precursor tothe Daiquiri (so in all intents, it’sthe daddy of them all). This wasa mix of Ron Cortez, lime juiceand honey. Initially we did it thewrong way round since you aresupposed to put all theingredients together first, mix, then add the ice so the first onehad to be shaken rather thanstirred. However I made it on thesecond attempt and mixed up theingredients first in a tumbler whichstirred up the honey perfectly(rather than lumpy in Andy’s trialrun). What we did then was to tryboth together. One shaken andone stirred and boy, the differenceis amazing and one to which Ihave never really taken muchnotice but shaking the drinkdilutes it a whole lot more thanstirring it. One to remember andstick in the old grey matter if I trythem again.

Ordinarily I’m a Cosmopolitan girl but having the opportunity to try a home madeDaiquiri has added to the list of cocktails I don’t mind drinking when I’m on holiday. Definitely if the sun was out this weekend and the BBQ was fired up, I would havethought I was in warmer climes as it brings the holiday back home.

£29 per month which includes postage and if you don’t have the kit to make cocktails, you can purchase the Mixologist Kit straight from the site which you can order whenyou’re ordering your first subscription. If you fancy trying the kit for yourself, we have anexclusive Us Two Friends offer for you to give you £10 off your first box! Just click hereand treat yourself with your £10 discount.

The September Box is now online too so if you want one, be quick and grab it beforethey sell out because if you don’t, you’ll be missing out on a fantastic chance to impressyour nearest and dearest with your Mixologist skills (ok, you might not be a Tom Cruisebut you’ll enjoy the experience and bring some sunshine to your weekend).
