The personal opinion of your Naonal Secretary is that we should be open to new thinking when planning our bellwether event. Our Class was not afraid to change back in 1952 when condions changed, and we should not be any different. “Because we’ve always done it that way” just isn’t a valid reason for inacon, especially as condions have changed so greatly over the years. Plus, it’s currently confusing for organizing authories, race commiees, and your Naonal Secretary! The Wells series honors Ted Wells, “the Great White Father” of our Class for its first 50 or so years. It certainly is not without much thought t that we consider removing this remembrance of this early stalwart, but on the other hand, there is not much honor in a compeon that is not sailed. This year we’ll sail a Wells Series if there are more than 52 boats that register for the Crosby plus any Wells- only pre-registraons. Judging from the last several years’ aendance, there hasn’t been much support for a connuaon of the Wells Series, but if there is, your Board needs to hear from you. Remember, this is YOUR organizaon; we need to know what you want from us. Any member of the Board can be contacted through the internet, telephone, or through Danielle in the SCIRA USA Office. It is grafying to learn from our office that memberships this year are already within 6 or 7 of the total memberships from 2013. Brainard Cooper, US National Secretary

Here it is June already. Half the year is behind us, and here in the US we are preparing for our national championship for the 80th time, although it wasn’t until 1947 that the Heinzerling Trophy was established as emblematic of the US National Championship.

This year’s event promises to be a great regatta held at Okoboji YC in Iowa. Pat Flood and his organization committee have promised us a fine time sailing in an area that is new to many of us. The last time we were in District 2 (Dillon Lake, CO) we had 66 boats in attendance, and we are expecting another good turn-out this year. Come join the fun, if you haven’t already registered.

For the last several years there has been annual discussion about the format of the Nationals. Some think the event lasts too long, others not long enough. Some want more races; some do not. Some think the Wells Series and the Crosby Series have outlived their usefulness; some do not.

The actual fact of the matter is that the Wells Series was instituted in 1952 because the 56 boat fleet that year was thought to be too large to manage for fair racing.

And another actual fact is that with the proliferation of VHF radio and GPS in race management, fleets of 70 to 80 boats pose no problem for today’s race management.

The personal opinion of your National Secretary is that we should be open to new thinking when planning our bellwether event. Our Class was not afraid to change back in 1952 when conditions changed, and we should not be any different. “Because we’ve always done it that way” just isn’t a valid reason for inaction, especially as conditions have changed so greatly over the years.

Plus, it’s currently confusing for organizing authorities, race committees, and your National Secretary!

The Wells series honors Ted Wells, “the Great White Father” of our Class for its first 50 or so years. It certainly is not without much thought t that we consider removing this remembrance of this early stalwart, but on the other hand, there is not much honor in a competition that is not sailed. This year we’ll sail a Wells Series if there are more than 52 boats that register for the Crosby plus any Wells-

only pre-registrations. Judging from the last several years’ attendance, there hasn’t been much support for a continuation of the Wells Series, but if there is, your Board needs to hear from you.

Remember, this is YOUR organization; we need to know what you want from us. Any member of the Board can be contacted through the internet, telephone, or through Danielle in the SCIRA USA Office.

It is gratifying to learn from our office that memberships this year are already within 6 or 7 of the total memberships from 2013.Brainard Cooper,

US National Secretary

Fleet Expansion via Selfish LendingArt Rousmaniere

Please, let’s all of us openly admit that numbers of snipes on the starting line and at fleet parties is like my mother’s chicken soup: some is good, but more is better.

Given that, let’s all be selfish about making this so – let’s get more boats on our fleet racing and regatta starting lines. And give us strength not to fall into the comfortable trap of dismissing this as a task for someone else, such as the class officers, fleet captain or the hot shots.

It’s quite easy, really. At the root of it, there are two simple steps:

1. PROACTIVELY SEEK OUT. Pledge that at least once this summer, each of us will reach out to a non-regular crew, friend, offspring of a fellow sailor, local college sailor, or club-member who tends to peer longingly at what we are doing and ask that he/she sail with us. Maybe even hand them the tiller for bit. For some, this may be an anxiety generator over concern with one’s season scores that could be put in jeopardy. I assure you that you will survive - try it.

2. LET THEM EXPERIENCE THE THRILL. Pledge that at least once this summer, each of us will have someone else sail our boat - be it a single 3-boat fleet race, a local low-key regatta or national regatta, it does not matter. You can even be the crew. You get to choose.

In either or both cases, take that deep breath and make the call remembering that this, in fact, is a selfish move on your part to add snipes to your starting lines or more party-goers to your snipe parties.

Think about it - all of us are benefactors of someone who took this step at one time on our behalf. I am forever in debt to Meredith Adams for asking my wife-of-one-year Jennifer to crew for her in a fleet race in Newport RI 30 years ago. I vividly recall Jennifer coming home that evening excitedly declaring that she had found our first boat. 25412, The Swedish Chef, remains in our family fleet of three snipes. And Carol Cronin started in snipes crewing for Ed Adams 15-ish years ago and then many other skippers before wrestling the tiller into her hands and evolving into a national-level skipper.

Give it a go. Be selfish. And have some serious fun along the way.

2014 Snipe Southwestern Championship

The 78th edition of the Snipe Southwestern Championship was held May 24th and 25th at Corinthian Sailing Club on White Rock Lake Dallas, Texas. “Best little sailing club in Texas”

For the first time in many years we experienced the perfect conditions for Snipe sailing with winds 10-15 MPH from the south and mild temperatures. All teams were able to be competitive the entire regatta with four different teams winning a race. The victors at the end of five races were Gene Soltero and his crew of Laura O’Leary on Saturday and Karen Soltero on Sunday. They were closely followed by Peggy Tautz and Steve Tautz in second place.

Everyone enjoyed a Tex Mex feast after racing on Saturday at the CSC clubhouse. Please join us next Memorial Day weekend for another great weekend of Snipe sailing and great fun.Mark Williams

Herb Shear Memorial Regatta and Classic Snipe RallyThe 2014 Herb Shear Classic was held on May 17-18 at Mission Bay Yacht Club. 23 Teams took to the course to compete for top honors while 3 Classic Snipes were on display all weekend as a bit of eye candy. Everyone was glad that the hot and dry Santa Ana conditions abated for the event and gave Fire Crews all over Southern California a welcome change in fortunes as well. Wind direction was a very shifty Southwest all weekend. About 10-12 knots on Saturday and 7-10 on Sunday made sure that everyone had their chance at the front of the fleet at some point (even if it was short lived while Randy Lake and Kate Shehan flew by). The eventual winners scored 5 wins out of 7 races, discarding a third to finish with a total of 7 pts! Fleet 495 stayed true to the Snipe Class motto with Serious Sailing and Serious Fun. After racing on Saturday, everyone made the trek to the Krebs home in Point Loma for a celebration in remembrance of Sailing Legend and past World Champion Earl Elms. The atmosphere was fantastic with Sailors joining Fisherman and many other groups all in attendance who told their favorite Earl stories and enjoyed tons of fresh seafood as well as hoisting plenty of beers in memory of our hero.

Big thanks to John Fretwell (District Governer) who organized the regatta, Pete Hunter who served as PRO, Jim Graham for helping to incorperate the Classics into the format, and Eric and Carolyn Krebs for hosting the party. Congrats to team Lake/Shehan on a solid win. Maybe you guys can put on a clinic before the PCC’s in July at ABYC to keep the scores a little closer!
