President’s Editorial - Chuck Parsons
Hi everyone! Hard to believe we just had our 26th National Reunion. The Radford shipmates are the finest in the world and I am proud to be a part of it!
I hope everyone enjoyed the reunion in Charleston, WV. Kimmy and I enjoyed it very much and just want to thank everyone for coming. I know some of you had to come a long way but I hope you enjoyed yourself.
For me, the highlight of the Saturday evening was the Honor Guard put on by the JROTC cadet from the Riverside High school. The women that presented the colors were very professional and presented themselves in a military manner. I want to thank our Chaplain Jim Moffatt and 60’s Director Mike Nave for the great job they did with TAPS. Those that have passed on would have been proud.
Don’t forget to be on the lookout for a place to relocate our museum, if the need arises. A military base, another ship museum or maybe combining with another museum are all possible options. Let me know if you find something and if I hear from the Orleck I will update you in the newsletter.
I hope everyone is excited about seeing Mount Rushmore in Rapid City, SD next September. It looks like it will be a good tour. Sharon Hammon and Jim Clark are taking care of the details. I hope to see a large turnout for this one.
Kimmy and I wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas surrounded by those you love.
30 knots and no smoke…
Your shipmate, Chuck

On 01/15/2017: Hi Chuck. My father James (Jim) Juskiv served in the Navy during Vietnam. He was aboard the Radford probably 63 to 67 ish. I am interested in learning more about her. It looks like the museum is in Lake Charles, LA now. Do you know of any other locations where her legacy lives on? Any info you can provide me would be appreciated. On 03/26/17 Kimberly: thanks for your email regarding the March newsletter. I realized that I had not changed my email address from my work address as the reunion happened so close to it. I retired from Illinois Institute of Technology on September 30, and set up my consulting firm and started two part time jobs in October. My new personal email address is [email protected]. I tried to change the roster and hope I succeeded. I will see if I can make the Charleston reunion. With my work, I am not sure. (but at least Friday and Saturday night) David Baker 64-66 Ltjg On 04/09/17 EASTER BLESSINGS - We're finally getting settled here in Illinois. Don't like the weather, but ----------We've finally found a townhouse, and moved in this week. It was good to get our belongings out of storage and get somewhat settled. Still lot of tubs to unpack, but that should keep us busy for a while. Ellie is adjusting and Rick's health has improved with all the new specialists he's seeing. To date, he's had about nearly 20 appointments and several more to go. But his new medication has made a really big change. Wishing you all the Blessings of the Easter Season. Love, Pam – Rick Dahl 63-66 ETM3 On 04/10/17: I talked to my dad, he was on the boat from April 64 to Aug 66. Rate was MMFN, machinist mate fireman. Last name is Juskiv. First name Jim or James. Hopefully that helps. Thank You, Randy Juskiv ASQ: CQE, CQT, CQA, & CQIA
On 04/24/17 I got a phone call from the wife of DONALD BELL last night telling me the sad news that Donald had passed away April 10. Donald and I were at boot camp together at the Great Lakes and from there went to the Radford and served from 55 to 58. He was in the after engine room and I was in the forward engine room. He was a good engineer and well-liked. My prayers and thoughts are with his family. Sincerely, Donald Burkart 56-58 MM2
On 06/09/17 Hope you're having a nice summer now that it's finally here. So much has happened these past 6 months with us. Because of Ricks health, we had to move to Illinois to be near our children. Aside from his advanced COPD, dementia from his heart surgery, blindness and now lung cancer we're holding our own without any military compensation at all. If you know of any of three Radford shipmates having medical problems and getting any type of compensation, can you let me know. Thanks and GOD Bless. Pam - Rick Dahl 63-66 ETM3

On 08/11/17 Hello Chuck, This is Brian O'Shea, writing on behalf of my mother, Mary O'Shea, Jim O'Shea's widow. Mary has recently moved back into the family home, and we would like to make sure that her address on file is current so that we can receive the newsletters. This is her address: Mary O'Shea - 109 Estates Drive - Orinda, CA 94563 Thank you and regards, Brian O'Shea – (Jim O’Shea 52-54 Ltjg)
On 09/04/17 Good afternoon: MARTY J. DIXON passed on 7/14/17 of lung cancer. He lived in Orlando, Fl. He served on the Radford 1964 to 1966. He was on the Dash Program. Please continue to send the newsletters to this address: [email protected] Thank you, Verna Dixon. I am sorry, I meant to put his rate ADJ1. On 09/04/17 Hi Kim - I spoke with Bill Edwards yesterday and he indicated he would like to suggest Long Beach as a possible reunion location for 2019. Since he can’t make this year’s reunion, he asked me to enter the suggestion under his name. I thought I’d send it to you now so you can add it to any other suggestions you may have received this year prior to asking the members for their suggestion during the meeting in West Virginia. Bill tells me he still has the contact information which he can update if the site is one selected for consideration. Since you are still chair for the committee, I think this lends credence to the process approved at the last meeting, plus Bill was delighted to hear that you and Sharon take on the final step of making all contractual arrangements for the reunion. Hope you are doing well and getting around better every day. Helen and I look forward to seeing you and everyone else in a couple of weeks. Mike Nave 64-66 Lt On 10/25/17 Kimberly and Chuck, Our Radford XO, PAUL SUTHERLAND, passed away last evening. I’m not sure if you knew that so I thought I’d pass it along. When I get an obituary I will pass it along to you. He did call me about 10 days ago to say farewell but I did not realize how close he was to moving to his next duty station. Sadly, RADM George Wagner 62-65 Ltjg
Till next time……..
