Pesident's Messag 2

Bill WeberBill Weber,NorCal Division President

My question to all of you is simple. When was the last time you got out of your comfort zone?

I ask all of my students this question. We all tend to repeat what seems to be working. It seems like the right thing to do. If it worked in the past then it should work now, right?

I've been in this sport for close to 50 years. When I started teaching I taught the way I was taught. Makes sense. RIGHT? As a young competitor, then later as a middle aged dad raising two young teenage players, eventually becoming a teaching professional, and now in the latter stages of my life working with the youngest players in our game, I have been truly blessed to work with our future.

I now realize what we did before is not always what we should be doing now. The only way I understand this is by opening my mind up to education and failure. YES... FAILURE! My challenge to all NorCal pros is to fail more with your students. Get as much education as you can. Embrace the challenge of bringing new ideas to your students. Let them know you are like a chemistry teacher and trying to get all the right ingredients for a great result in the experiment of teaching. We must understand not all players learn the same way so we may fail along the way to finding the right mix for each student, but with work we'll get there and our students will be better for it.

The best way I have learned to do this is by soaking up as much new tennis education as I can. We have two opportunities coming for this…the USPTA World Conference (TTC) in New York in August and our NorCal Fall Conference this October. My challenge to our NorCal pros is to knock our education credits out of the park and to hit a home run and do four times the required amount of education in the next three year cycle. Let's make NorCal the leaders in education for the USPTA!

USPTA Reaffirms Commitment to Safe Play

Starting January 1, 2019, the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) will require all applicants to complete the Safe Play education modules as a part of the certification process before they can become a certified professional of the association.

Along with the addition of the 90-minute Safe Play module, USPTA Professionals must complete Coach Youth Tennis as a part of their education pre-certification requirement. The decision was approved at the USPTA Executive Committee meeting in April.

“It is important that our tennis-teaching professionals and coaches create a safe environment for all of their students,” said John Embree, USPTA CEO. “Through Safe Play training, our members will be more conscious of explicit behaviors that could be detrimental to the next generation of tennis players. We want to do everything that we can to make tennis safe for all, especially kids.”

Safe Play is the USTA’s commitment to respect and safety for every individual participating in an event or program through the use of screening, education and reporting tools. Safe Play expects individuals to adhere to Safe Play policies and standards, as well as all other policies, procedures, and practices and applicable external laws and regulations.

USPTA Partners with RacquetFit to Introduce Body -Tennis Certification to the Tennis Industry

The United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) has partnered with RacquetFit to introduce a new certification for tennis-teaching professionals, fitness coaches and medical providers. RacquetFit, an educational organization dedicated to the study of how the human body functions in relation to tennis, will be offering seminars throughout the United States for these providers who wish to earn the RacquetFit Certification.

“What RacquetFit has developed is game changing for the tennis industry,” said John Embree, USPTA CEO. “RacquetFit was developed by an Advisory Board of tennis-industry leading experts and led by the founder of TPI (Titleist Performance Institute), Dr. Greg Rose. With TPI’s cutting edge research and development and over 21,000 professionals certified through their network, we wanted to partner with RacquetFit to produce the same cutting-edge education for the tennis industry.”

Attendees will have the opportunity to learn from leading experts in the tennis, fitness, and medical profession from instructors such as Dr. Sean Drake, Dr. Mark Kovacs, Dr. Greg Rose and Jeff Salzenstein. Upon completion of the certification, professionals will have the tools to screen the physical limitations of a player along with the knowledge of how to get them back to performing at a high level.

“By being able to assess a player’s physical abilities, and then understanding how those attributes relate to their tennis-specific skills, is what separates an average coach from a great coach,” said Dr. Sean Drake, Vice President of RacquetFit. “Up until today, tennis specific fitness and medical professionals could not obtain recognition from the global leader in tennis-teacher certification, the USPTA. Now, fitness and medical providers can proudly display and announce to the world, that they are educated and recognized as a tennis-specific expert through the RacquetFit Certification and the USPTA.”

NorCal Profiles - Division News 7

The month of May brought the 5th Annual USPTA NorCal Hit & Grill hosted at The Claremont Club & Spa, a Fairmont Hotel. Charged with building the next generation of USPTA NorCal tennis professionals, the U30 Team has seen a rise in activity through its events in the last couple years. This year's event was no different as 24 pros made their way to The Claremont on May 18th. Beginning midday, the event kicked off with a dynamic warm-up presentation led by 2017 USPTA U30 Pro of the Year, Adam Lucero. Immediately following was the competitively geared doubles round robin. High level players, Bryant Wei, Dmitry Dzuba, Aaron Elbert, and Michael Carreno were on the show court to set the tone of play. Women's doubles was up on the adjacent show court and was anchored by Liz Jones, Amy Brown, and Sarah Banning. In addition to the returning USPTA NorCal U30/ Young Pros, it was good to see the following newcomers to the event: Sarah Banning, Amy Brown (Bay Club SF), Bryant Wei (PBI/ Silverado Resort) , Isaiah Pekary (Burlingame Tennis Club), Doug Hochmuth (Davie Stadium), and Sayed Amir (Chabot College Tennis Academy).

After two rounds of play, the new twist on the event was introduced: The Team Feeding Challenge. The Team Feeding Challenge consisted of four skills based challenges under the pressure of timed rounds. Man, did the pros have a blast with this one!! After all times were noted, three teams remained standing for the finals and an additional challenge. Once the dust settled, the winners were in. Dmitry Dzuba (Chabot College Tennis Academy) and Bryant Wei (PBI Tennis/ Silverado Country Club) finished with a time of 1:37. The next event will be held in the fall, so USPTA NorCal U30 pros be on the lookout.

Special thanks from the USPTA NorCal U30/ Young Pros Team (Ross Wisser, Phil Graham, Thomas Le, Dale Evans)for organizing the event and to the following for contributions: The Claremont Club & Spa, a Fairmont Hotel, USTA Northern California, Wilson Sporting Goods, and Vibe Tennis Apparel

Tournament Directors Matthew Morillo and Jeff Gonce report that the May 2018 Ladies Invitational was a great weekend of competitive tennis, good friends, excellent food, shopping and team camaraderie. The only thing missing was a little warmer weather! There was a lot of tennis played with the format of (2) eight game pro sets with a super tiebreaker for the third set.On Saturday, the 3.5 division played. It was the Spanish Bay Babes vs the Blue Angels who made it to the finals. It came down to a tiebreaker in the third set to determine the winner. There was so much pressure with both teams watching, cheering and even dancing! It was the Blue Angels who came through to clinch the victory. Congratulations to captain Cecilia Cardenas on a well deserved victory! On Sunday, the 4.0 division played. It was the Fantastic 6 vs Song and Dance. Song and Dance pulled out the win in a exciting finish! Many of the scores were 8 to 7 with lots of tiebreakers. This is what this tournament is all about. Getting through all 3 rounds of tennis and feeling absolutely exhausted. Many thanks to Jeff and Matthew for running these great USPTA events each May and October!

As we all gear up for a busy summer here are a few of the recents events in the Napa-Solano region.Phil Cello had the sponsor party for the North Bay Challenger. It had been postponed by the Atlas Fire during the tournament last year. Two local players played an exhibition before the dinner. Marcus McDaniel from Vacaville and Zach Lim from Fairfield are both in the top five in the nation in the 16 and unders. It was exciting to see such high-level tennis from our local area! The tournament will return in October at Solano Community College.I ran into Roger Gough who has moved back to Davis. Roger is the original owner of Volleys Tennis Shop in Davis. Roger has been stringing at ATP, WTA and Challenger tournaments, including Indian Wells, Newport Beach, and the above mentioned North Bay Challenger. Roger is certified as a Certified Racquet Stringer (CRS), Master Racquet Technician (MRT) and Tournament Stringer Specialist (TSS). Nice to have you back in Nor Cal Roger.Lukas Burger attended the USTA Nor Cal Early Development training campOn a personal note, I coached the Vacaville High boys team and we won the MEL League Title for the first time in school history. My brother Bob’s Middlebury Men’s Team won the NCAA Division 3 National Championship. Bob was the UC Santa Cruz coach for 35 years before moving to Middlebury.

The Challenge Court at Bay Club Gateway in San Francisco is totally thriving. A few weeks ago, Jason Blum had 32 players show-up to play Challenge Court. The players really like it!On Saturday, June 16th, Bay Club Gateway is hosting a Tennis Boot Camp.

SANTA CRUZ - MONTEREYGay [email protected]

There is a new Peter Burwash International Tennis Director at Carmel Valley Ranch. His name is Chris Myroid and he has been with PBI for the past 11 years and has developed tennis programs at exclusive resorts in Mexico, Hawaii and the Carribbean. His most recent job was at one of Lousiana’s premier golf and country clubs. Following these resort assignments, Chris has enjoyed the opportunity to be immersed in club programs for adults and juniors, with an active calendar of instruction, clinics, mixers, tournaments, teams and leagues. Chris is from Minnesota and met his wife, Gelavij there. They have two children, Ruby and Van, born in Hawaii. Welcome to California Chris!

The Jolla Beach and Tennis Club held the National Hardcourt Championships 50’s - 90’s May 7-13. The NorCal USPTA pros that participated were Judy Newman in the 50’s, Andrea Barnes in the 60’s and Gay Finch in the 70’s. Judy was a quarterfinalist in both singles and doubles. Andrea lost in the quarterfinals of the singles to her doubles partner and then also lost in the quarterfinals in the doubles main draw. Gay only played doubles and lost in the first round of the front draw to the number five seeded team in a tight match. Then she and her doubles partner lost in the 2nd round of the back draw. It is a wonderful tournament and especially a treat to watch the 80’s and 90’s play.

The Grandmothers Tournament held on May 5th at the Tennis Club of Rio Del Mar was a huge success with 50 grannies participating and all the proceeds going to the Santa Cruz Cancer Benefit Group. Shannon Randolph, a NorCal pro, and her partner won the A doubles.

Gay Finch just finished coordinating a Middle School tennis program at Aptos High this past spring with 25 players participating. They played 2-3 times a week in a Middle School League from Santa Cruz to Monterey Bay.

With summer approaching, Judy Newman is offering 4 weeks of a Tennis Adventure Camp for junior players ages 7-13 at a private court in Santa Cruz. The camp runs from 9 am -1pm. For the 30th season Gay will have a junior tennis camp at Aptos High for players 8 -18. It is a six week program with clinics in the morning and team tennis in the afternoon. The Aptos Junior Tennis Team will play other clubs in the area.

PENINSULAChris [email protected]

I think everyone must be busy with the nice spring weather as I haven't heard from many of you.

Boy's High School and Coed Middle School leagues have all come to a close. I know many of you are school coaches and it is greatly appreciated by the kids and their parents. To have qualified USPTA pros running these programs is helping grow the game. Thanks to all of you. I help with the Midpeninsula Tennis Patrons Middle School League that had 16 teams this year. I am also the coach for the Woodside Middle School team which is part of the West Bay Athletic League that has about the same number of teams. Lots of fun for juniors from beginners all the way to advanced. Many of these players will go on to play in high school, and a few in college, but hopefully we have helped all of them love this "game for a lifetime".

We were treated to some great college tennis at Stanford this year. Both teams hosted the round of 64 and 32 . The men had their best regular season since 2001 being ranked as high as #3. Unfortunately they were upset by a very strong Ole Miss team in the round of 32. The women surprised the field by winning the championship despite being seeded way down at number 15! Thanks to the coaches : Women's coaches Lele Forood, Frankie Brennan, Erin Burdette and Men's Coaches Paul Goldstein, Brandon Coupe, and Francis Sargeant for providing unbelievable free tennis for many local pros, their students, and interested tennis fans. It is a joy to watch such great tennis in our community.

Going forward, please keep in mind that we do these newsletters four time a year and other pros would love to hear from you.

Have a great summer everyone... Enjoy the three majors, your summer camps, hot weather, and all those kids that you are inspiring to play the sport we love!

MARIN - SONOMA Corky Cramer [email protected]

With school doors closing for the summer many of us in the North Bay are preparing for our Summer camps and tournament season. Looking back I can’t help but be proud of the accomplishments achieved as we continued to deal with the effects of the fires and challenges in the new weather patterns.

Our little region has so much to be proud of. I have chosen to spotlight the high school teams in Sonoma and Marin counties that won their leagues as well as individual athletes who qualified for the North Coast Sectional Championships. There is one common denominator. EVERY TEAM reaching these milestones was coached by a USPTA certified professional ! Coincidence? I think not.

So with that a pat on the back to my fellow pros who continue to inspire play at all levels of the game lets take a look.

A number of teams that reached the North Coast Section Boy's Championship Tournament were coached by USPTA members: Coach Jim Martinez - Marin Academy - NCS D2 Team and Individual 3rd Place Charlie Sternberg

Coach Tony Greco - Cardinal Newman- NCS D2 Team and Individual Doubles 4th place Pablo Martinez and Joey Greco

Coach Jim Klyce - Maria Carillo NCS D1 Team Coach Corky Cramer - Sonoma Academy coached Division 2 Team and

Individual Singles Runner Up Anish Bedi and Individual Doubles Steven Gu & Kelly Needleman, as well as NCS Girls individual competitors Catherine Li & Nell Sheridan

Unfortunately, Petaluma Valley Athletic Club Tennis Director Tony Delario lost his home base last year when the owners decided to close their doors. We are happy to say that he can now be found servicing his clientele at Magnolia Park in Rohnert Park.

Regional Vice President Dale Evans and President Bill Weber were in Lake Nona, Florida attending the USPTA Executive Committee meetings April 5th - 7th. They were dining at a restaurant called Chroma’s, when they were pleasantly surprised to see Frances Tiafoe (Big Foe as he calls himself) and Reilly Opelka (a bigger foe) walk in to dine. Perhaps Chroma’s dishes have genetic benefits that will enhance their serving!

Rosie Bareis was also in Lake Nona, Florida in April for a Team USA Coaches Workshop…She also got an invitation to participate in Team USA Player Development with Payton Young, one of her prominent tournament players.

Friday May18, USPTA held their 5th Annual Young Pros Hit and Grill . There were 24 pros participating in the event which took place at The Claremont Club and Spa in Berkeley. It was hosted by the USPTA NorCal U-30 Team. The team feeding challenge winners were Dimitri Dzumbra from the Chabot College Tennis Academy and Briant Wei from The Silverado Country Club.

CENTRAL VALLEYJack [email protected]

Central Valley USPTA teaching pros are busy organizing their 11 week summer programs, clinics and summer junior league teams. Schools seem to be starting and ending earlier each year, with most finishing in May.

Happy Birthday to Mark Weir, Director of Tennis at the Del Rio Country Club who is planning on his annual Oregon trip in July taking nine juniors to the Pacific Northwest for some fun competition. Again, for the 25th year, on Wednesday evenings starting June 13th, Mark will be hosting his annual grass court tennis matches. Local tennis pros, college and junior players, and top visiting players will be featured in exciting doubles or singles exhibitions. Del Rio is starting their first USTA Mixed Team at the 8.0 level and registrations are going well. At the time construction continues at the club and is ahead of schedule. Mark is just finishing his junior tennis league where juniors competed in the team tennis format.

USPTA pro Brian Heiser, Director of Tennis at Brenda Athletic Club Modesto Sport, reports they just finished hosting the Cinco de Mayo tournament in memory of former member Dan Teves. On June 23rd, Christy Perez will help host a new 3 player team play-day tournament. On July 10th & 11th, Brian will be hosting the July Junior USPTA tournament. Good news, their courts will be repaired and finished this month.

USPTA Pro Bill Weber reports that Brenda Athletic Club Turlock Sport courts are also being resurfaced and new court lighting is being installed. Summer programs are set to start in June, including clinics and junior team tennis leagues. Congratulations to USPTA Pro Shawn Black, whose Modesto Junior College Men's Tennis team won their conference. USPTA Pro George Collier is back and healthy after having ear-surgery. He is ready to do summer clinics in Modesto and Oakdale for their recreation departments. His Central Catholic Boy's tennis team won their conference and finished number two in the sectional championships. George is retiring from school coaching after three decades of coaching boys and girls varsity tennis at various high schools in the Central Valley. George is returning to the City of Oakdale after a 20 year absence to start a summer tennis program. In August, he will be attending the US Open and the USTA Tennis Teacher's conference.

Have a wonderful summer!

In the meantime we didn't want you to miss the great news we saw on the American River College website....

Sacramento Pro Steve Dunmore Wins National Award!!

American River College (ARC) women’s tennis head coach Steve Dunmore has been honored as the National Junior College Coach of the Year by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). This award recognizes Dunmore as the top women’s tennis coach for all community and junior colleges in the US. It follows Dunmore’s selection as the ITA’s California Coach of the Year.

“This is a richly deserved honor for Steve,” said Athletics Dean Derrick Booth. “Steve is hard-working, dedicated to the art of coaching, cares for his athletes off and on the court, and is tireless in his efforts to strengthen our program.”

The ITA praised Dunmore for being highly respected in the northern California community college tennis community for his team’s quality of play and sportsmanship. The coaching award recognizes more than just success on the court, as it also credits those coaches whose teams have a track record of sportsmanship and service off the court.

“I’m very humbled and honored by this award,” said Dunmore. “This award recognizes the great things happening here at ARC and I’m very excited about our program’s future.”

In 2018, ARC women’s tennis finished second in northern California and enjoyed a 13-2 record. Several student athletes made deep runs in the state championships tournament in both singles and doubles competition.Dunmore has helped turn around a tennis program that in 2016 did not win a single match. The Beavers were 9-4 in 2017 and then were NorCal runners-up this year.

In addition, the ARC men’s tennis program has finished second in the state for the past three years, winning the NorCal title all of those years.“We’ve got something special going here at ARC,” Booth noted. “I encourage local tennis athletes to check us out and think about the opportunities we have to offer.”
