UW USP 2015 OverviewFoundation

 First Year Seminar + Quantitative Reasoning + Freshman Composition (Communication 1) [9 hrs]  *Courses to be completed freshman year.

*Departments may count seminar credits toward a major if they wish, but a seminar may not be exclusively embedded within a major.

  Communication Skills

 Communication 2 (intermediate skills) + Communication 3 (advanced skills) [6 hrs]*Writing/speaking/digital communications combined as appropriate.

*These courses may be embedded in majors. 

Human Culture Coursework in the arts, humanities, languages, social sciences, and histories [6 hr minimum]

*Departments will be given the opportunity to designate courses as HC. *A course cannot fulfill the requirement for multiple USP categories.

* Courses may not be from major department.  

Physical and Natural WorldCoursework in science, technology, engineering and mathematics [6 hr minimum]

  *Departments will be given the opportunity to designate courses as PN.*A course cannot fulfill the requirement for multiple USP categories.

Policies Effecting Students

• Per existing articulation agreements, students entering UW with earned Associate Degrees (AA, AS & AB) from WY CCs, will be exempt from USP 2015 (w/ the exception of C3 which is embedded in major-specific upper division courses and possibly FY).

• New this spring, students entering UW with earned AA, AS or AB from any US, accredited community college will be exempt from USP 2015 (w/ exception of C3, and possibly FY and V)

• Current UW freshmen and sophomores (with fewer than 60 earned hours), may opt into USP 2015 to replace USP 2003 or 1991 requirements.

• Students must earn a grade of “C“ or above in the First-Year Seminar and Communication 1, 2, and 3 courses. A “D” will suffice for courses in the other categories.

USP Course PoliciesFirst-Year Seminar/FY (3 hours)• Designed for true first-year students. Students who have earned

30 or more post-high school college credit hours are exempt from this requirement. Students with 2 semesters of college work but fewer than 30 earned hours should be encouraged to petition requirement.

• Student must complete FY with a C or better.

Quantitative Reasoning/Q (3 hours)• Any credit-bearing Math, Statistics, or Computational Science

course that has been identified as a UW equivalent will fulfill this requirement. Students may satisfy the Q requirement with an ACT score of 26, an AP score of 3 on Calculus A/B or B/C, an IB score of 4, or a Math Placement score of 4.

USP Course PoliciesPhysical and Natural World/PN (6 hours)• Designed to help students understand the fundamental concepts of

scientific and quantitative inquiry and develop the ability to understand the relevance of scientific, technological, and quantitative skills to contemporary society. Any transfer course that meets the definition will be accepted for USP credit.

PN credits must be earned outside the major.

Human Culture/H (6 hours)• Human Culture courses are designed to help students understand

human behaviors, activities, ideas, and values in different situation and contexts. Any transfer course that meets the definition will be accepted for USP credit.

H credits must be earned outside the major.

USP Course PoliciesUS/Wyoming Constitution/V (3 hours)• The requirement is mandated by state statute and cannot

be waived. Three ways to complete it:• Completion of a UW V course;• Completion of a course that has been articulated with UW; or• Completion US Constitution course AND a passing grade on the WY

Challenge exam.

Communication 1/ C1 (3 hours)• English 1010, ESL 1210 or HP 1020. For transfer students,

an introductory composition course will fulfill the requirement.

• Student must complete C1 with a C or better.

USP Course PoliciesCommunication 2/ C2 (3 hours)Students may meet the requirement in several ways:

• Completion of a UW C2 course with a C or better;• Completion of a C2 course with a C or better that has been

articulated with UW;• Completion of an intermediate composition course and a public

speaking course (with grades of C or better); or• Completion of either an intermediate composition course and a

passing score on the public speaking exam (with a grade of C or better), or completion of a public speaking course and a successful petition for advanced writing status from the English Department.

This category can be fulfilled by courses taken student’s major department.

Four-Year Academic Plans

• By March 1st all 90 academic undergraduate programs must submit a four-year degree plan to Academic Affairs.

• Academic plans will be displayed on a centralized UW web site as soon as they have been reviewed.

Possible Advisor Steps

1) Show student how to use Degree Works “What If” function to determine which USP series would be most efficient and appropriate for him or her.

2) Assist student in comparing college and degree requirements that he or she has completed and has yet to complete.

3) Complete appropriate paperwork with student if he/she chooses to move to USP2015.

The following steps are required to ensure requirements listed are accurate. The What-If is a resource only and does not replace the audit that is automatically generated through the Worksheets tab. Under the What-If Heading:

1. Choose an option for Level, Degree, and Student Catalog from the drop-down menu.

Under the Choose Your Different Areas of Study Heading: *Your choices will appear in the box to the right. You can remove selections from the box by highlighting them and clicking on Remove. Select a Program from the drop-down menu.

2. Choose the Major associated with the Program from the drop-down menu. Example: Program is BS in Mathematics then major needs to be Mathematics.

3. Select the College that offers the Program you have chosen.
