Database
Use Search Engine News feeds to expose more specific and valuable sources.
Unions, associations, industry groups, and hobby groups have very specific news not covered by search engines or syndicators like Factiva, et. al.
General to Specific Type SourcesMonitor
NewsSourcesNews4U automatically harvests and categorizes news from sources that
require monitoringNews4U uses RSS feeds, or makes a
feed for you if there are none
These sources are RSS feeds, RSS feeds of searches on
major search engines, or RSS feeds of searches of other
websites
Your competitor’s press page doesn’t have a RSS link?Use ‘MagicFeed’ to make an RSS feed out of any web
page with hyperlinks on it.
News4U allows you to automatically monitor and harvest news from any RSS feed (RDF, XML, RSS 0.9, etc.)
Right click on the RSS symbol and use ‘copy shortcut’ to copy the URL
Here’, we’ve done a search on FoxBusiness on “Cap and Trade” and the site allows us to make an
RSS feed from the result.
Adding a Legitimate RSS Source
News4U executes the search on FoxBusiness for you, and imports the
results as an RSS feed.
This will be monitored and harvested multiple times per day.
News4U imported the links from Fox Business.
When it did, it also matched some of the headlines to the ‘Cap and Trade’ Auto-categorization Rule, and
placed those headlines in that category.
It all happened automatically, and it will continue to conduct that search on FoxBusiness, import the results, match the categorization rule, and place
matching headlines into the category.
News4U allows you to create an RSS feed to execute this search on CNBC for ‘Cap and Trade’ and import the results
- EVEN THOUGH THERE IS NO RSS FEED AVAILABLE!!
We’ve done a search on CNBC on “Cap and Trade”
this time. This time – No RSS feed
available.What to do?
Here’s another example, but THIS TIME, no RSS feed is
available.
MAKING A REGULAR WEB PAGE INTO A SOURCE
This time, RIGHT CLICK on the hyperlink in the
browser’s address bar and choose ‘copy’
Here’s the harvest of the hyperlinks from the CNBC
site with the ‘Cap and Trade’ search on.
After clicking the ‘Start Wizard’ button, MagicFeed
will pop up.Paste the hyperlink from the
CNBC search here.
This function converts a regular web pages into an
RSS feed.
Complete the wizard, add the source, and it is now harvesting news from a
regular web page without an RSS feed!
THIS IS FOUND IN THE ‘SOURCE’ AREA FROM THE MAIN NAV BAR IN NEWS4U
Google, Bing, Yahoo and other engines all have news and blog search capabilities, complete
with RSS feeds.
Bing provides a Twitter search which you can use a Virtual
Source on.

TASK TWO: CATEGORIZING NEWS
News4U – Practical Use of Automation
Return to Main Menu
News4U News Monitoring, Categorization, Newsletter Generation
& Readership Tracking, all rolled into one!
News4U files news into categories.Automation will reliably file news about a single competitor, for example.
The Competitors here are grouped in ‘tiers’. ‘300’ series are ‘Tier 1’
competitors, ‘400’ are ‘Tier 2’, etc. Industry topics are ‘10’ series. This makes finding and using categories
MUCH easier.
If you were a NewsRoom customer, you no longer have to worry about how category setup relates to producing newsletters. Newsletter
improvements and automation will be covered later.
Each harvested headline is tested against each rule. If the headline doesn’t match any rule, it goes into a pool of harvested headlines. News4U will keep 180 days of harvested headlines (which can be adjusted).
You can ALWAYS then go to the REVIEW HARVESTED HEADLINES area of News4U and search for any headlines you want. Even the headlines that got posted will be in that pool, but they’ll have a green check indicating they’ve been posted to a category already.
They’re still there and searchable anyway.
Here’s ONE EXAMPLE you could use to set that system of rules up. It’s COMPLETELY up to you.HeadlineHarvested

How Auto Categorization Works
Auto Categorization rules are used to move headlines into specific categories.
You can categorize using search terms (good for product names, issues, proper nouns (names, etc)
Or you can just move all news from a certain source into a category (competitor press release
pages, for an excellent example)
This is where BOTH Auto-Categorization Rules AND Alerts are done. Rules do the categorization.
Each rule CAN be an alert, but doesn’t have to be.
Select the category that the news is
going to go into.
Clicking this link exposes the interface for creating an automatic alert if the
rule finds matching headlines
Alerts can either be made available to everyone to
subscribe to, or be used privately by News Managers
(At least) Two ways to use automatic categorization:
Example A:Search Term-based categorization:
Monitors all sources for a ‘hot-button’ issue using search terms.
Example B:“Brute Force”-based categorization:
Your competitor publishes a press release on their press release page. ANY NEWS from them is news to me.
No search term used – all news from these two sources is moved
to the Aclara Category
News comes in from the field all the time. ‘Add Headline’ allows you to take NEWS FROM HUMANS and
make your own headline and publish it to a category.
‘Human-source’ news can be added to any category you wish.
Got news from the inbox or phone call?
Add it to News4U . . .
You can now push this out as a bulletin immediately, or wait until this is published as an automatic or custom newsletter.
From News4U . . .
To a bulletin to your internal clients. . .
TASK 3: CREATING NEWS DELIVERABLES
News4U – Practical Use of Automation
Return to Main Menu
News4U News Monitoring, Categorization, Newsletter Generation
& Readership Tracking, all rolled into one!
Delivery Modes
• Manual Newsletters (Non-Automated)• Automatic Newsletters• Alerts• RSS Outputs
SETTING UP AUTOMATIC ‘ALERTS’(EMAILS WITH NEWS RESULTING FROM HEADLINES BEING AUTOMATICALLY CATEGORIZED)
News4U – Practical Use of Automation
Return to Main Menu
News4U News Monitoring, Categorization, Newsletter Generation
& Readership Tracking, all rolled into one!
Alerts vs. Newsletters
• Alerts are different than Newsletters– Alerts are raw, unedited, and automatically sent to a list
of interested people.– Require ZERO editorial input– Subscribers can manage whether or not they want to
continue to receive them or to discontinue receiving them on their own.
– They require zero effort by the publisher:• Set up the rule• Assign email recipients• Monitor readership (Walk away)
At the bottom of each Auto-Categorization Rule, you’ll find a link that exposes the interface for creating an automatic alert
This interface allows you to choose an alert template, add comments, and send your alert
for this rule.
Every automatic categorization rule
can be made to generate an alert.
News4U automatically publishing a demo Alert on ‘Cap and Trade’
It formats and sends out to a self-managing subscriber list an email with the headlines that matched the rule for that harvest interval.
Harvesting, categorizing, alert creation – all automatic – happening multiple times per day.
Each alert and newsletter has subscription controls that allow each
person to decide what news products they want.
The alert itself is a template. Each template is customizable as an *.XSL file.
Clicking on ‘Subscribe to this Alert’, or ‘Subscribe to Other Alerts’ brings up
this interface for the end user.
Each of your internal customers can manager their own alert and newsletter
subscriptions themselves!
NEWSLETTER PRODUCTION(AUTOMATIC AND NON-AUTOMATIC)
News4U – Practical Use of Automation
Return to Main Menu
News4U News Monitoring, Categorization, Newsletter Generation
& Readership Tracking, all rolled into one!
Newsletters• Two Newsletter Modes:
– Automatically Published – Non Automated Newsletters (Publisher selected headlines going to a
specific audience for a special purpose on a single occasion)• Automated: Summaries are PERFECT newsletters for publishing
automatically. – Require only a little editorial input (less than 20 minutes)– What press releases have our top competitors published this week?– What SEC filings were filed on our competitors/suppliers/customers this
week?– Give me a summary of what was published this week on a topic, like ‘cap
and trade’?– What’s the latest on our competitor’s recall issue?
• Non-Automated: When a human being editor needs to step in
You now have the ability to create a newsletter and schedule it to be
published automatically.
Whatever news is in the category that falls between the date you publish the newsletter, and the date the last one
was published, will appear in the newsletter
Just select the categories you want
to appear in the newsletter. A
summary of all press releases for all Tier 1
Competitors, for example
Automatic Newsletter Creation
You can select who gets the newsletter, add an opening paragraph, and a closing paragraph.
You can schedule the Newsletter to
publish anytime you
wishEach Newsletter can have its own unique
template. These formats are then
available from a pull down menu
Each Newsletter can be made available for subscription by your internal
customers, or made by invitation only
It doesn’t matter how many Newsletters or Alerts (Auto Category Notifications) you
want to maintain. Each person in your company can self-manage what they want
to sign up for.
You also don’t have to maintain email lists for each deliverable. Since people can subscribe or unsubscribe to any rule or
Newsletter you make public, there’s no lists for you to manage.
You can always create a newsletter yourself at any time. Go to the Headlines Posted area, and at the top and bottom of the page you’ll find the
‘Newsletter’ button.Check the headlines you want to see in your Newsletter.
Clicking on the ‘Hand with a Pen’ allows you to edit the
headline.
Manual Newsletter Creation
The ‘Edit Posted Headline’ interface
allows you to edit title, date published, the
summary (especially if there is no summary), and add comments.
You can also disable the hyperlink, change its color
(handy for links where you pay each time you click them.
You can also post a headline to more than one category
The interface for creating On-Demand
newsletters is the same as the one for
automatic newsletters.
Obviously, there are no controls for
‘scheduling’ an ‘On-Demand’ newsletter.
With On-Demand newsletters, you have your choice of
templates.
Notice that there is no ‘Unsubscribe’, ‘Subscribe’, or ‘Subscribe to Other’ links at
the bottom of the Manual or Custom Newsletter
TASK FOUR: TRACKING READERSHIP(AND OTHER REPORTS)
News4U – Practical Use of Automation
Return to Main Menu
News4U News Monitoring, Categorization, Newsletter Generation
& Readership Tracking, all rolled into one!
By Clicking on the ‘Readership’ menu selection
You can select a report type, and indicate a date range
Which will tell you how many email subscribers were sent a
given deliverable, and how many opened that deliverable.
News4U allows you to SHOW readership for each deliverable.
In the administration area, there are two important functions that report on
tracking readership
Reports statistics on the automatic categorization rules, and the alerts that
were sent by them. This function reports on automatic newsletters, when
they’ve fired, how many total issues sent, etc.
Other reports are included which allow you to better understand the categories and sources you are maintaining.
These reports are available under the ADMINISTRATION menu selection.
For each categorization rule, News4U keeps track of whether the rule has been working , whether the alerts got sent, AND
whether readers opened and clicked on the alerts.
Choose the month you want to examine.
Note also that SUBSCRIBERS, UNSUBSCRIBERS are tracked. It also tracks whether a link inside an alert was clicked on.
Newsletter Statistics Reporting has the IDENTICAL interface as the reporting for ALERTS. They are separate because ALERTS
and NEWSLETTERS are very different types of deliverables.
Choose the month you want to examine.
Note also that SUBSCRIBERS, UNSUBSCRIBERS are tracked. It also tracks whether a link inside an alert was clicked on.
