USING GIS TECHNOLOGY TO ESTIMATE WILD MUSHROOM PRODUCTION IN
CASTILA Y LEÓN (SPAIN): THE MICODATA PROJECT
Martinez-Peña, F. & Gomez Conejo, R.
INTRODUCTION
www.micodata.es
• This project pretends to classify and valorize Wild Edible Mushrooms in Castilla y León as a forestry product
• The knowledge of this resource in Castilla y León is intense in terms of its typology but not in terms of spatial distribution.
• “Valonsadero Forestry Investigation Department” (Junta de Castilla y León) and Cesefor supports this project with a respectively deep background in Mycology and Gis

OBJECTIVES
www.micodata.es
• To classify and zone the forestry terrritory in Castilla y León, in terms of its Wild Edible Mushrroom weight according to the socioeconmic interest and the haversting accesibility
• To develope a Spatial Database with the 27 main fungical species in the region
• To design and standarize the mushroom production data collection in this region.
• To publish a Website (WebGIS) where this information is avalaible for the harvesters, and refreshed every 10 days with meteorological information supplied by the National Weather Institute
MYCOLOGICAL PRODUCTION INDEX (MPI):
Canopy cover - Abundance - Densities - Development grade - Soil – Climate – socioeconomic value
METHODOLOGY

MYCOLOGICAL AVERAGE PRODUCTION (kg/ha):
Canopy cover - Abundance - Densities - Development grade - Soil – Climate

RESULTS
RESULTS (II)
RESULTS (II)
WORKING WITH MANIFOLD GIS
WHAT HAVE WE DONE WITH MANIFOLD- Forestry Database integration (more than 100.000 polygons)
- Soils and climate information analysis and integration
- Mushroom production estimations calculated with Manifold scripts
- Administrative splits (municipalities, provinces) calculated with Manifold
- Maps and tables creation to PDF for reports
WHAT HAVE WE NOT DONE WITH MANIFOLD- Accessibility calculations (DEM processing) – Performance problems. Solved with ArcMap
- Web publishing. Made with ArcIms-Google Maps
WORKING PROCESS (I)
• Data integration from different drawings and tables to classify the original forestry drawing without changing its geometry
• The forestry drawing has more than 100.000 polygons
• We calculate its new fields for 27 mycological species.
WORKING PROCESS (II)
• Forest property information
• Harvesting accessibility information
• MUSHROOM PRODUCTION ESTIMATION (kg/ha) FOR DIFERENT SPECIES
• MAP GENERATION WITH MUSHROOM AND SOCIAL INFORMATION
WORKING PROCESS (III)
• We receive meteorological information every 10 days (Surfer Grid format)
• We do identities with its contours so we can modify the estimated production with a correction index based on:
• Average temperature
• Soil humidity stock
• Soil humidity variation from last measure
