Using Children’s Literature to Make Real-World Mathematics Connections

    mailto:[email protected]:[email protected]

  • In today’s session we will:

    ● Use children’s literature to explore strategies and activities to help students connect mathematical concepts to the real world and engage in problem posing tasks that relate to real-life situations.

    • Explore three Mathical books that will be featured at the National Math Festival.

  • Benefits of Using Literature in Mathematics Instruction● Math ideas are taught in the context of a story and promote

integration of multiple content areas● Use literature to introduce, teach, or reinforce math concepts

which results in advancing mathematical thinking● Prevents math anxiety and creates a less math anxious

classroom environment● Allows for historical, cultural, and practical applications and

    BEFORE DURING AFTER

    ● Pre-assess skills and understanding

    ● Introduce new topics and vocabulary

    ● Introduce manipulatives● Connect with children’s

    previous experience

    ● Reinforce vocabulary ● Address misconceptions● Encourage higher-level

    thinking● Provide multiple

representations● Generate new knowledge● Make connections among

    concepts

    ● Review● Prompt further questions● Make applications to the

world outside of class● Encourage connections

with other mathematics topics and other disciplines

    ● Lend enrichment● Serve as an extension
