Research Geologist Jonathan Warrick (Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center) and Research Ecologist Jeff Duda (Western Fisheries Research Center) represented the DOI for its work with the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe,to restore the Elwha River of Washington State as a finalist for the world-renowned Thiess International Riverprize. Even though the Riverprize was won by a team representing the Niagara River, in New York, just to be recognized for this award at this year’s International River Symposium in New Delhi, India, was a great honor.

Group Recognition (continued) Caroline Van Hemert and Colleen Handel (both from the Alaska Science Center) published a study in the journal mBio that was ranked among the top 10 articles of 2016 by the Wildlife Disease Association and Wildlife News. Frank van Manen, Will Thompson (both from the Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center) and the Hawaii Volcano Observatory (HVO) had photographs selected for the “Best federal photos of 2016” published by Federal News Radio as well as an uncredited image from the HVO. Emeritus L. J. Patrick Muffler and Research Geologist Michael Clynne Both scientists from the Volcano Science Center were presented the Geoscience Information Society’s Best Guidebook Award for their guidebook “Geologic Field-Trip Guide to Lassen Volcanic National Park and Vicinity, California”. Emeritus Geologists Forrest (Barney) Poole and Charles Sandberg Received the 2016 John D. Haun Landmark Publication Award from the Rocky Mountain Section of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists for their landmark paper, “Hydrocarbon Source Rocks of the Greater Rocky Mountain Region”. Received the 2016 Governor’s Medal for Science and Technology. The award was presented for Robert’s innovative research on Great Salt Lake, collaborating with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the University of Utah to provide information vital for effective lake management.

John Besser

John’s publication, “Toxicity of sediments from lead-zinc mining areas to juvenile freshwater mussels, compared to standard test organisms,” was selected as an Exceptional Paper for 2015 by the journal Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry.

Received the Herbert C. Hoover Award from the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration-Washington DC Section, for his professional contributions and service to the Society.

Uri Ten Brink Selected as a American Geophysical Union Fellow for 2016.

Was invited to present the 2016 James Dineen Memorial Lecture series at the University of New Brunswick, Canada. Mr. Duda presented three academic and public lectures that discussed results from recent dam removal work in the Elwha River and from dam removal synthesis efforts from a recent USGS Powell Center working group.
