Global Evaluation of the Impacts of Storms on Freshwater Habitat and Structure of Phytoplankton Assemblages (GEISHA) (Jason Stockwell, Orlane Anneville, Vijay Patil—Ecosystems, Water). Co-sponsored by the French Center for the Synthesis and Analysis of Biodiversity (CESAB). Research Geologist Daniel Buscombe and Research Hydrologist Paul Grams and co-author Sean Smith were awarded the 2017 Best Technical Note Award from the Environmental & Water Resources Institute for their paper, “Automated Riverbed Sediment Classification Using Low-Cost Sidescan Sonar”. Research Geologist Jonathan Warrick (Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center) and Research Ecologist Jeff Duda (Western Fisheries Research Center) represented the DOI for its work with the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe,to restore the Elwha River of Washington State as a finalist for the world-renowned Thiess International Riverprize. Even though the Riverprize was won by a team representing the Niagara River, in New York, just to be recognized for this award at this year’s International River Symposium in New Delhi, India, was a great honor.
