Doyle, Francescon discuss platforms

Why are you running for student body president and vice president?

Dillon Doyle: “We’re running to empower students and to create a student government that solves student issues with student solutions. So that may sound very, ‘What does that mean?’ What that means is we’re going out there and we’re talking to students and listening to them and we’re making an eff ort trying to continue what they [USG] have done throughout the year and focus on issues that students want solved and actually solve them with stu-dent solutions.”What do you think are some of the biggest issues at DU?

Megan Marshall: “One of biggest issues that Dillon and I have been hitting on with a lot of students is that there are executive scholarships right now, that the president and vice president will be paid for what, I think, should be a volunteer opportunity. I think there was a big confl ict of interest when it was voted in. Another

big issue is the fact that student govern-ment does get free season tickets to hockey games and a lot of them don’t even go.”

DD: “Senate has a negative percep-tion. People think that the Senate is there

to take their money and is there to screw over the students. I think sometimes, like through execu-tive scholarship and buying ourselves season hockey tick-ets, we defi nitely per-petuate that. So then when we listened to the students and say, “OK, you don’t want us to buy them [hockey tickets] for

ourselves, and you want $5 tickets back and you want the Safe Ride to work. If you add up executive grant and senator hockey tickets that equals around $6,500. When elected, we’re going to get rid of all that and invest in buying hockey tickets to two of most important games [for all students]. It’s symbolic and increases spirit and it’s a gesture of faith and will build bridges that I think we lost over some of the years. Instead of student money for 25 people, it’s student money for all the students.”

JIM FRANCESCON

Why are you running for student body president and vice president?

Jim Francescon: “Because I’ve had such a great experience this year being able to help the campus out. Th ere’s so many things were started this year that next year, with the con-nections we’ve been able to build this year, and a lot of the things we weren’t able to get going, we can push through next year and make happen. Being vice president and having been able to meet vari-ous administrators and gain really good relationships. Where in a lot of cases, when you have someone new coming in, even from just a senator position, those relations necessarily aren’t made and sometimes they haven’t been as positive as those ones I’ve been able to cultivate this year.

So being able to utilize them we can really hit the ground running and get a lot done next year. We have such a great vision for next year. We sat down and kind of started building our ideas and fi gure out what we’re going to do and we just really,

really feel like this is the year we can do a lot of good for this campus.”

Felipe Diaz: “I’ve gotten really excited about the vision we have for next year. Jim and I, personally, are two very diff erent

people, but like he said, this is a great chance to connect and it’s something I’m really excited to be a part of.”What do you think are some of the big-gest issues at DU?

JF: “For the undergraduate stu-dent population, I feel like we have so many great little areas of our campus that really

thrive on their own, but if we could connect them, imagine what we could accomplish.

Another problem I think we have is in regards to our international students...We’ve worked really hard way to develop a plan on ways to bring international students and inte-grate them with the domestic culture here.”

FD: “I think student awareness of the Undergraduate Student Government and the transparency of it…We’ve got ton of plans for video addresses, radio addresses and we will have a website.”
