USF in DC
USF in DC is a semester-long program in Washington
D.C. that integrates a full-time internship with relevant
coursework taught by USF faculty and University of
California Washington Program (UC DC) faculty.
Participants can choose from a range of elective
courses and internship opportunities that meet their
interests and skill sets. Students will spend their
semester engaging with peers from across the country
in the heart of the capital, where they will live, learn,
and explore all that DC has to offer.
Program HighlightsWhile in DC
Students will experience first-hand the culture and politics of Washington DC while exploring the theory and practice of ethical public service by taking academically rigorous courses, connecting with influential policy makers and members of the media, engaging in transformational internships, and taking advantage of civic engagement opportunities.
Coursework
Students will complete academic coursework as offered through University of California Washington Program (UC DC) faculty, and enroll in the core seminar led by Professor Ken Goldstein. Participating students take up to 16 units: 4 unit internship, 4 unit research seminar, 4 unit special topics seminar, and 4 unit elective. Students also satisfy the Core Curriculum service-learning requirement through USF in DC.

Students may take courses on the following topics:
American National Politics, Political Journalism and Media, Campaign Politics, US Foreign Policy, Middle East Studies, International Law and Policy, Consumers and Public Health, Sustainability & Environment, International Relations, Washington Ethics, and more.

Students benefit from participating in full-time internships meant to hone their professional skills, extend their academic knowledge into real-world applications, and immerse them in the unique political and social culture of Washington DC.

CostStudents enrolled in USF in DC pay USF tuition and applicable student fees, as they would while attending classes at the main campus in San Francisco. Financial aid packages may cover some costs. See McCarthy Center staff for more details. Note: Students are responsible for securing their own travel arrangements.
A USF politics faculty member based fulltime in Washington, D.C., Professor Ken Goldstein came to USF after serving as a full
professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is the author of two books and over 30 refereed journal articles and book chapters. He has worked for the CBS News Election and Survey Unit, consulted for CBS News, and CNN. Professor Goldstein is currently a consultant for the ABC News elections unit and a member of their election night decision team.
