ABOUT THE MSX MUSIC SUPPORT “Wow! Great music!! Is this really coming from the MSX?” “It is. Aleste supports the FM sound extension called MSX MUSIC. If you insert the Aleste cartridge in slot 1 and the MSX MUSIC cartridge in slot 2 and switch on the computer, you can play the game with music the likes of which you’ve never heard!” “Liar! You’ve set up a hi-fi installation and that’s what I’m hearing, right?” “The standard MSX sound chip (PSG) has only three channels and a noise channel. This great FM device, however, has nine channels; add to that the PSG, and you have a total of twelve channels!” “I don’t believe you! This is a conspiracy!! You’re with the CIA, aren’t you?! I don’t believe it, I simply do not believe it!!” “What’s more – there’s also an Aleste synthesizer music tape, which was recorded at a studio.” “Hey, are you ignoring me?” “Unfortunately it was released in 1988; stocks have ran out long ago.” “Hey!!”

(Note: the EGG re-release comes with a built-in FM extension. You won’t have to worry about find or installing the cartridge. The section above was kept in for completeness’ sake).

THE STORY

One month after the big earthquake…

At that time, Ray Wizn, an Earth Defense Organization pilot, was enjoying a short break with Yuri Lennox, who was from the same base.

“Ray!! Come quickly!!” “Just a second!” At that moment, all sound faded and

everything went white. A deafening roar filled the room,

followed by screaming. The explosion flung people around like rag dolls. Monstrous plants appeared after they had destroyed the building.

“Yuri!!”

People were wounded by falling debris. Children were crying, and the concrete was covered in blood.

Ray ran to Yuri and lifted her up. “Ray, where are you... Ray…” Yuri’s voice sounded as though she

was about to lose consciousness. “Can’t you see me?” Ray gripped Yuri’s hands tightly. Ambulance sirens were to be heard

in the distance.

The earth trembled and burst. Monstrous plants emerged from the cracks and started to grow with terrible speed. They wound themselves tightly around anything in their path, as though they were planning to eat it all.

In a few moments, the town had turned into a pandemonium.

Green sap was flying everywhere. Tentacle-like branches started to pierce the humans, causing them to shake and screambefore new branches appear from their mouths and ears.

Police officers fired their weapons wildly as they were being grasped by the plants. People ran frantically, trying to escape…

The earthquake, one month before the attack, had corrupted the data stored in DIA 51, the environmental control computer.

As a result, DIA 51, which had been used in a genetic manipulation program with the aim of producing new plants for oxygen synthesis, started to spawn the monstrous plants.

These horrifying plants absorbed the immense amount of energy stored inside DIA 51, allowing them to grow to enormoussizes.

The plants took control of their victim’s brains, and lead the infected people to the base that was built to protect DIA 51.

Ray Wizn boards the Aleste, the small state-of-the-art fighter of the Joint Earth Defense Organization.

The attack of the monstrous plants, an

entire defense army base going mad –what’s wriggling inside DIA 51’s core and causing all this mayhem?

The final battle starts now!

Standard projectiles Aleste starts out with this weapon. You can increase its power by picking up power chips – and that’s pretty much all that is to be said about this weapon.

• All-Directional Bullet Aleste’s default special weapon fires in the direction in which Aleste is moving. It’s a very playful weapon.

• Wave Gun Press and hold the fire button to build upenergy, and release it to launch a powerful projectile. You might think that’s similar to “R-T**e”, but that’s just your imagination.

• Laser The laser destroys everything that happens to be in front of Aleste. It appears as though something is twined around the laser – it certainly is not a ribbon for rhythmic gymnastics.

• Rolling Fire This weapon revolves around Aleste and destroys everything that gets near it. Yet,Aleste won’t get dizzy. H’m.

It’s great!! It’s strong!! It’s Aleste!!

• Mug Destroyer Aleste fires three ring-shaped laser beams to destroy the enemies. They’re not donuts, andyou can’t eat them.

• Swing Wave The Swing Wave weapon fires high speed, boomerang-shaped projectiles. The shape looks like the ‘he’ character in the Japanese hiragana alphabet –this doesn’t mean Aleste’s laughing at enemies, like “hehehe”.

• Plasma Ball A huge vortex sucks up and kills all enemies. It looks like a disembodied soul, but don’t be afraid, you won’t be cursed.

• Wave Laser Aleste fires a long laser beam whichgoes left and right. It’s a bit like a windshield wiper.

?

• Secret of the standard bullets This weapon will grow stronger if you catch many power chips.

• Secret of the special weapons The special weapons are installed on the

surface, but if you catch many power chips, they will also be delivered in the sky.

• Another secret of the special weapons If you catch the same weapon more than once,

the weapon will become much stronger. Aim for strength! Be strong!

• Auto fire secret You will fire automatically if you keep the fire

button down. This might keep your fingers from convulsing after hours of pressing buttons.

LEVEL INTRODUCTION

ROUND 1 CITY AT NIGHT

The skyline looks impressive - but the plants are approaching here as well. Aleste - scramble!

ROUND 3 DEEP FOREST

A forest! The environmental preservation computer DIA 51 can be seen lurking in the deep through wide cracks in the earth’s surface.

ROUND 2 COUNTRYSIDE The scenery appears relaxing, but don’t be deceived - the enemy attacks will become even fiercer in this round! Fight valiantly while dodging the enemy, Aleste!

ROUND 4 GREAT RIVER The enemy defense line is develo-ping from the center of a crescent lake. You can’t afford to lose attention here!

Go! Go!

ROUND 5 μ PLANTS

The monstrous plants multiply. Could these strange creatures be a warning to mankind, for using ge-netic manipulation too carelessly?

ROUND 7 - INVADED Is human civilization being destroyed by the plants that came from the darkness? DIA 51’s armor has been destroyed and screams of hatred from the plants inside can be heard.

ROUND 6 HYPER BATTLE After escaping the fierce battle on the surface, Aleste flies into the stratosphere, with enemy ships in pursuit.

ROUND 8 LAST SHOOTINGAleste finally reaches DIA 51. What will Ray Wizn encounter here?!

Aleste!

CHARACTER INTRODUCTION

Ray Wizn 19 Years old. Aleste pilot. He is the son of Professor Seft Wizn, who was in charge of the DIA 51 project. He has great skills as a pilot; his impatience is a weak point. His comrades at the base call him ‘the feverous fireball’.

Yuri Lennox 17 Years old. She is a bright, courageous young lady. She sympathizes with Professor Seft Wizn’s ideals. Shortly after she visited him, she joined the Earth Defense Organization. She was stationed at the same base as Ray Wizn. “He is just a friend, nothing more,’ she stresses.

DIA 51 DIA 51 is the computer that regulates the environment on earth. It controls earth’s temperature and genetically synthesizes plants to supply oxygen. The environment preservation project centered around this computer is called ‘DIA 51 Project’. It is criticized by some because of cost problems while others say it pollutes genetics.

THAT’S THE COMPILE CLUB!

!! THE COMPILE CLUB When Aleste was originally released, you could become a member of the Compile club. Members of the Compile club received a colorful game magazine called ‘Compile Club’ once every two months. This magazine did not just contain information on Compile games, but also on good games by other companies. According to Compile it was a magazine full of fun. Apart from information on games, manga (Japanese cartoons), pictures and small presents could be found inside a Compile Club magazine. They said that these magazines would pull you into a relaxing world where your brains would be stimulated.

!! UNDERGROUND VERSION

Compile Club members would also receive the ‘underground version’ of the Compile Club magazine, containing secret information, which was only to be disclosed to club members. !! EVENTS As a Compile Club member, you could also expect something special to happen at game competitions. When Aleste was released, Compile was also planning some events especially for club members. Club members also had the exclusive right to send over-familiar letters to Compile, to cry out foolish things to them, to use childish words to them and to grin to them. !! BECOMING A MEMBER Now, for the sad part: the Compile Club doesn’t exist anymore, so there’s no way to join it. This is a pity, as everybody who bought Aleste and then joined up would receive an “Aleste fun pack” as a present. Should the WOOMB crew come across some nice Aleste stuff, you will certainly be able to get hold of it, as a WOOMB member!

BUILDING THE ALESTE PAPER PLANE Originally, Aleste was supplied with a paper model of the Aleste craft. Of course, we didn’t want WOOMB members to miss this, so we made a virtual version which you can print and build yourself. You can do the following nice things with the paper plane: 1 Show it off to your friends 2 Burn it when it’s cold and warm everybody with it 3 Use it when you’re out of toilet paper 4 Wipe off your nose with it when you have caught a cold 5 Use it as tissue 6 Keep it with you for a long time and wait until it has become a collector’s item 7 Cut it out, paste it together and let it fly 8 Roll it up, make a megaphone of it, go to a baseball game to encourage the players9 Scrawl something on the back and send it to Compile 10 Make a kite of it and let it fly. Make it fly so high that it can be seen by Compile For the stubborn kids who really want to play idea 7, we’ll give an easy to understand construction plan. Look.

the EGG re-release. ● Please don’t upset your mother by playing the game too long. If your eyes become

tired, look out of the window for a while. ● There are no monstrous plants inside the cartridge, nor is Ray Wizn. You will not

find Yuri inside either, so it’s useless to open it. The same goes for the files of the EGG re-release.
