II. IMPLEMENTATION During its first start-up, and also after remaining inactive for more than a month, the detector must be charged, discharged and totally recharged before use. In addition, you are reminded that a gas test must be carried out on any portable gas detector before going to the site.

The “power supply units” cannot be exchanged in a dangerous area. Warning : substitution of components may impair intrinsic safety. Under the normal conditions of use the instrument will run for

­ 30 hours with dry cells. ­ 24 hours with NimH batteries

IMPORTANT: The instrument is certified for use in group5 I and II explosive atmospheres and only when it is equipped with cells or batteries of a type recommended by the maker. CSA certication covers the following batteries : Duracell MN1500, Panasonic P80 AAS, Saft VSE AA 850, Panasonic HHR 1500, Varta VH 1200 AA) .Recharging the batteries: When it is equipped with accumulators, the device can be recharged by inserting it into a type CR 2002 two-position intelligent charger, or by connecting a “simple” charger to the side socket of the instrument (Industrial EX2000) Depending on circumstances, this charge may last from 4 to 24 hours maximum. IMPORTANT: In order to maximize the life of the batteries, the OLDHAM company recommends that the batteries be fully discharged6 and recharged to the maximum at least once a month on average. * Note : the choice to use dry cells or rechargeable batteries is made by a switch (fig 2, rep 5, page 13)

2. MEASUREMENT MODULE (FIG. 2. Rep 1)

2.1. Presentation Being a vital element of the gas detector, the measurement module must be treated with care. Mechanical impacts, splashing with water etc. may impair the quality of the measurement or even, in extreme cases, destroy the modules. A water-repellent and anti-dust filter (fig. 2. rep 3) fixed to the “sintered” metal protects the “head” of the module. Different types of modules will be used depending on the version of the instrument.

2.2. Fitting or replacement The module can be plugged in and is accessible once the anti-rotation device has been removed and its protective cap unscrewed (fig. 2. rep 2). It is located on the top of the instrument.

2.3. Precautions The modules are sensitive to certain poisons which can cause desensitivation of them : emanations of silicones at concentrations > 10 ppm, chlorinated or sulphurated products at concentrations > 100 ppm. A lack of oxygen (< 15% O2) may cause a too low signal compared to normal conditions and then would indicate an under-estimated measurement which would be dangerous for the user. The use in an O2 enriched atmosphere may impair the electrical safety.

3. REMOTE SAMPLING

3.1. Presentation:

The gas concentrations can be measured or checked, before entering a vault or highly inaccessible locations using a remote sampling probe.

3.2. The various systems:

The remote sampling systems can consist of a telescopic, rigid or semi-rigid stem and a manual suction bulb.

3.3. Use:

The sampling system

Assemble the sampling system used (probe/bulb/tube/water-repellent filter) and then connect the hose to the gas inlet pipe.

Fitting the sampling system to the EX 2000 « Industrial » and « Catharometer » :

The gas inlet pipe (rep. 1) can be inserted into the module very easily, quickly and without tooling.

Fitting the sampling to the EX2000 « Mining » :

The EX2000 « Mining » is equipped with a threaded nozzle.

The gas introduction pipe screws itself directly into the module, without tooling, without any dismantling or adaptation of anything.

Use: pumping and measurement

Using the manual pumping bulb, pump at least 8 times in under 20 seconds in order to obtain a reliable reading. Wait for the measurements to stabilize before confirming them.

Dismantling the pumping system

Never forget to withdraw the gas inlet pipe after using a sampling system or after calibration. This would give rise to underestimation of the measurements which could be fatal to the user!

4. CARRIAGE OF THE INSTRUMENTS, THE OPTIONS:

-The metal clip (fig. 2. Rep4) The user can get on with his work while leaving the instrument to monitor the surrounding atmosphere, attached to his clothing using the clip provided for the purpose. Attention: in order to be able to take readings correctly, the module should never be obstructed. - The leather bag with shoulder strap: provides protection for the EX 2000 while leaving the user’s hands free. Although alerted of correct operation by a loud audible signal, it is essential for the user to be able to monitor the alarm indicator easily.

III. USE

1. OPERATING THE INSTRUMENT This is done using the touch areas located on the front panel (fig. 1. rep1). • Switching the instrument on or off • Enter • Maintenance • Illuminating the liquid crystal display • Scrolling the parameters and menus • “down” key • “yes” or “no” for confirmation. • Clearance of gas alarms • “up” key. “Maintenance” mode: use of the programming and calibration menus, or reactualisation of "MIN" and "MAX", following the versions. Remark: an interval of 3 minutes maximum is allowed between two depressions of the keys, otherwise the instrument will “restart” in “normal” mode (display of current measurements).

2. DATA GIVEN BY THE DISPLAY (REP 5. FIG 1)

The liquid crystal display allows messages to be read clearly:

• 4 main digits (7 segments), for displaying the measurement (see paragraph II2 : measurement module) (rep1.)

• 3 additional small digits (14 segments), for displaying symbols

such as LEL, MIN, MAX, TST, OFF, DEG, CH4 etc..(rep2)

• 4 pictograms supplementing the audible and visual alarms relating to the exceeding of thresholds, battery faults, maintenance mode etc..(rep3)

• 3 “arrow” pictograms: for indicating that the “scroll parameters”

menu is being used. (Rep4)

3. SWITCHING ON The device is switched on by pressing momentarily on the following key A regular audible “beep” signals that the instrument is operating correctly. The interval between the “beeps” is factory-programmable and the “beeps” can be disabled. The following appear in succession on the display, accompanied by a continuous visual and audible signal: Test display

Remarks: As soon as the instrument is switched on, the needed stabilisation time of the signal is of 10 seconds maximum. The “detected” gas is programmed in the factory and engraved on a label.

4. SWITCHING OFF

Keep the “OFF” key pressed The display then indicates the following countdown:

5. ILLUMINATION In order to read the measurement in dark locations it is possible to illuminate the display by momentarily pressing the following key: 2 red light-emitting diodes placed on either side of the display provide this illumination for 20 seconds (as standard).

6. SCROLLING THE PARAMETERS (for all versions) By pressing momentarily and successively on the following key The “arrow” pictograms are brought up, indicating that the normal mode for displaying measurements has been exited.

8. THE ALARMS

Visual: red indicator clearly visible on 3 sides and located at the top of the instrument (see figure 1 rep. 3). Audible: Loud buzzer located above the front panel of the instrument (see figure 1 rep. 4). *GAS: The “gas” audible and visual alarm is triggered when at least one of the two preprogrammed instantaneous thresholds is exceeded.

9. CLEARING THE ALARMS * Clearing the GAS alarms : by pressing momentarily on the following button Clearing the alarm involves cancelling the “pulsed” audible signal and turning off the alarm indicator on condition that the user has left the danger area. NB: if the audible alarm is cleared while a threshold is still exceeded: the indicator will continue to flash and the corresponding pictogram will remain “steady”. * Clearing the FAULT alarms: In the event of a fault it is not possible to clear the “continuous” audible and visual alarms.

IV. MAINTENANCE and SERVICING

Important: For any help, please refer to the standard CENELEC EN 50 073 « Guide for selection, installation, use and maintenance of apparatus for the detection and measurement of combustible gases or oxygen ».

Being a safety instrument, it is necessary to calibrate it at least twice a year.

This work is reserved for authorized and qualified personnel since it could possibly jeopardize the safety of detection

All these instructions are also submitted to the domestic regulations of each country.

1. MAINTENANCE OF THE EX2000 AND CK2000

The alarm threshold 1 (programming), can be easily altered and preventive calibration or calibration following the replacement of the module can be carried out using a maintenance programme built into the instrument. In order to use this programme, the maintenance plug supplied with the accessories must be fitted into the socket located on the left side of the instrument (fig. 1. rep 6).

Then press simultaneously on the following keys

A pictogram appears at the bottom right of the display: a key, at the same time than the "programming" menu.

You can now reach the "programming" and "calibration" menus pressing the key

The “programming” menu allows manual programming of the adjustable alarm threshold: threshold 1 (from 0 to 60% LEL), only for the version EX2000 "industrial", alarms being deactivated on the version CK2000.

1.2. Calibration

The only means of checking that the instrument’s detection function is working properly is the calibration performed with the help of a standard gas. This “recommended” standard gas is specified on the label of the detector. Nevertheless, some other standard gas may be used on referring to the table of coefficients: Chapter VIII of this manual. Hence, calibration must be carried out :

- Every 6 months minimum - After an exposure at high gas concentrations - After more than one month storage with no use - After a module change - Following an instrument fault Within the calibration menu the “visible and audible” alarms are not triggered. The “calibration” menu makes it possible to check and adjust the zero in pure air and the sensitivity to gas. CAUTION :

CSA recommends as follows :

Before each day’s usage sensitivity must be tested on a known concentration of CH4 equivalent to 25-50% of full scale concentration. Accuracy may be corrected (see adjustment procedure). High off-scale readings may indicate an explosive concentration.

Adjusting sensitivity:

• Position the gas inlet pipe level with the module • Connect up the hose from the calibration kit and inject the standard

gas8 Caution : Be sure not to block the gas evacuation hole, placed on the gas introduction cap and this to avoid untimely fluctuations of the measurement.

Display the measurement corresponding or tending to correspond to the value of the injected standard gas: wait for the signal to stabilize. (approx. 30

seconds)

8 Precaution during the calibration : Check that the flow rate is of 60 l/h. For all versions, use a content with a concentration >10% LEL of the range, otherwise only the zero will be confirmed, maintaining a flow rate of 60 l/h. For CK2000 : contents highly above the UEL (Upper Explosivity Limit) of the gas are recommended (50% for example). Alternatively, a calibration with a mixture in nitrogen can be used, but a mixture in air is nonetheless preferred, as nitrogen and air have slightly different conductivity.

2. MAINTENANCE OF THE EX2000 "MINING"

A maintenance program, integrated in the instrument, allows to easily modify alarm threshold(s) (programming), to proceed with calibrations for prevention or further to a changing of module. 2. 2 Calibration

The only mean to check the capability of the detection function of the instrument, is the calibration made with standard gas. The calibration has to be done :

- Every 6 months minimum - After an exposure at high gas concentrations - After more than one month storage with no use - After a module change - Following an instrument fault During the calibration, the "visual and audible" alarms are not triggered.

Within the calibration menu the “visible and audible” alarms are not triggered. The “calibration” menu allows to check and adjust the zero in pure air and the sensitivity to gas.

V. THE CHARGERS

1. THE SIMPLE TYPE 220 V AC CHARGER FOR EX2000 "INDUSTRIAL"

This type is a simple charger powered from the 220 V AC mains (standard power supply unit with 12 V DC/500 mA output). It delivers a nominal charging current of 50 mA. The maximum charging time is 16 hours. The male plug is fitted into the connector located on the left side of the EX2000 "Industrial".

2. THE SIMPLE TYPE 12 V DC CHARGER FOR EX2000 "INDUSTRIAL"

The 12 V DC power supply is provided directly from a vehicle “cigarette lighter” socket (cable fitted by OLDHAM). The nominal charging current is 30 mA. The male plug of the cable fits into the left side of the EX2000 "Industrial". The instrument can be connected up permanently. The maximum charging time is 24 hours.

3. THE CR200211 CHARGER FOR ALL VERSIONS

This type is an “intelligent” charger supplied from the 220 V AC / 12 V DC mains. It allows simultaneous charging of two EX2000 instruments (two units in the same box), equipped with NimH batteries. The maximum charging time is 7 hours for NimH batteries.
